A little bit of context and history:

The disappeared Ortiz Basualdo Anchorena Palace (better known as the Ortiz Basualdo Palace) was a luxurious residence that existed facing the San Martin Plaza in the neighborhood of Retiro, Buenos Aires.

This grand mansion, which occupied half a block bounded by Basavilbaso, Maipú, and Arenales streets, was designed by Belgian architect Jules Dormal at the request of Mrs. Magdalena Dorrego de Ortiz Basualdo (1826-1905) for her eldest daughter, Inés Ortiz Basualdo (1853-1922), widow of Estanislao Peña y Lezica, and her youngest son, Carlos Ortiz Basualdo (1863-1910) married to Matilde de Anchorena Castellanos, all members of important aristocratic families of late 19th century Argentina.

The mansion was completed in 1904, and that year, the Municipality of Buenos Aires awarded it the First Prize for Best Façade in its annual competition. This palace should not be confused with the one built in 1912 for Daniel Ortiz Basualdo (1860-1935), the second son of Mrs. Dorrego de Ortiz Basualdo, married to Mercedes Zapiola, at the corner of Cerrito and Avenida Alvear, now the Embassy of France.

The Ortiz Basualdo Palace, which appeared as a single unit, actually contained two important adjacent but independent residences. One with an entrance at Arenales 733, with a grand porte cochère, was that of Inés Ortiz Basualdo de Peña, who, already a widow, moved into it with her daughter Elisa Peña de Uribelarrea (1878-1943), newly married to Manuel Adrián de Uribelarrea Anchorena, a marriage that had ten children. In 1943, Elisa Peña de Uribelarrea died, already a widow, and the executor of the estate entered into negotiations to sell her part of the palace to the Russian embassy, which finally bought the house of Celedonio Pereda on Rodriguez Peña street.

The other great residence with an entrance at Maipú 1210 was that of Carlos Ortiz Basualdo, married to Matilde de Anchorena Castellanos in 1896. Carlos Ortiz Basualdo died in 1910, after having five children, four boys and one girl. Matilde de Anchorena Castellanos married François Verstraeten Dunois in 1914, with whom she had a son and a daughter. Her son, Francisco Verstraeten de Anchorena, married Raquel Terán Etchecopar in 1942, and her daughter, Elena Verstraeten de Anchorena, married Enrique Ibarguren in 1941. The Verstraeten Anchorena family lived in the palace until their last days. After the death of Doña Matilde de Anchorena Castellanos de Verstraeten in 1969, the remaining part of the palace was auctioned and demolished.

The Ortiz Basualdo Palace was one of the most important examples of the palaces and mansions that emerged in the early 20th century in the neighborhoods of Retiro, Recoleta, and Palermo. These mansions were clustered around the San Martin Plaza, along Avenida Alvear and adjacent streets. Until the crisis of 1930, family successions and the emergence of rationalism in architecture definitively put an end to them, both in aesthetic exhaustion and economic reality.

4/3/13: Late Runs Spur Rangers Sweep

Final score: Rangers 8, Astros 5 MVP: 1 Mitch Moreland, Rangers: 3-4, 3 RBI, 2 run scored, 1 HR, 1 double, 1 BB

In a game where both starting pitchers were hit early and hit hard, it took a couple of late inning runs for the Rangers to complete the season-opening road sweep of Houston. The Astros, looking to bounce back from yesterday's 17-2 shellacking, got started early, with a 2-run home run in the top of the first inning, and another 2-run shot in the 3rd inning on their way to 5 early runs. However, the Rangers slowly chipped away, and the game was tied at 5 by the time the starters exited the game. The bullpens did their job, but the Rangers got to Paul Clemens, Josh Fields, and José Veras late, pushing 3 runs across in the last 2 innings, and the Rangers bullpen slammed the door on the Astros to send the home team to a 3rd straight loss to open the season.

(Strat note: Another game with back-to-back dice triples sandwiching a walk, though this time the walk was also a dice roll and the rolls for the triples came off of different pitchers/cards, so not as improbable as the previous time this happened. Early fireworks, but somehow things seemed to calm down - for a moment - with the bullpen in. Every single Astro started, and 1 of the 2 pinch hitters, struck out at least once, which is impressive in a bad way.)

El 30 de Mayo nunca se podrá olvidar

Como explicar 30 años siendo azul...

Los que aún tenemos a papá, saben que ellos son capaces de hacer locuras por y con sus hijos. el mío decidió vestirme de azul a escasos días de mi existencia en este planeta

El uniforme solo era un pretexto para saber que no solo le importaba que fuera azul, si no que tuviera los valores que el vetusto Guillermo Álvarez tenia como máxima "Honor y lealtad, valor y nobleza en el deporte, pero sobre todo en la vida.

Mi padre, muy a su estilo y posibilidades vio en el futbol ese momento de recreacón y convivencia para unirnos con mi hermano y posteriormente mi hermana.

Tu como  yo, sabemos que la historia "con el azul" es de mas amarguras que alegrias. Mi primer recuerdo remoto es en una final perdida vs Necaxa, estadio lleno e Ivo Basay haciendonos el título para los Rayos.

Pero en 1997 la cosa cambio, cual script digno de Azteca Novelas, Hermosillo con chaleco antibalas puesto, y arrollado por el mejor ortero de la Liga en ese momento (Comizzo) y previo a una falla garrafal de Palencia, nos daba la estrella número 8 para el club, con mis escasos 7 años vivi ese campeonato de manera feliz pero siempre falto algo más.

Seria masoquista recordar, la final vs Pachuca, Toluca, Santos, Rayados, América además de la Libertadores y Concacaf vs Atlante y los tuzos. pero para llegar a un final feliz debimos pasar algo más que un camino tortuoso.

En ese recorrido tu y yo perdimos mucha gente, muchos azules que no volvieron a verlo campeón, y por si fuera poco en uno de los mejores torneos de la máquina en los ultimos 10 años, la liga se suspende. El problema, una pandemia mundial.

Cruz Azul fiel a su costumbre y al ADN de su afición nos volvió a ilusionar y por enésima vez creiamos con total excepticismo que se fue erradicando con el correr de los partidos.

En la porteria teniamos a un medallista olimpico, a un jugador que vapuleamos hasta el cansancio y que tambien merecio el titulo como el Cata, a un campeón del mundo como Aldrete. a un lider como Escobar y un Aguerrido Charrua como Rivero, a una contención de campeonato con Pol y Romo,  a un Rafael Baca que tambien vapuleamos y que ese torneo dio uno de los mejores momentos con la máquina, parecia que lo teniamos todo después de una de las humillaciones más grandes en semifinales.

Se acercaba la liguilla y los tipos que llegaron a ser solución a Cruzazul lo fueron, un Elias Hernández que fue de más a meno fue sustituido por el mejor Piojo Alvarado que hemos visto, sin contar a Orbelin que lleno de alento la media completado por los recambios de Ángulo, Montoya y la joven promsea Santiago, odos dispuestos para arropar al delantero que siempre quisimos para un equipo con hambre de gol, Jonathan Rodriguez.

Lo que paso en el juego de la gran final erá un recuerdo diferente para cada persona, los que estaban fuera del pais, los que estaban en casa, solos o acompañados, los que recordaron a sus familiares que perdieron la batalla, los que tuvimos la fortuna de estar en el estadio, y la vieja guardia que volvio a ver a otro CruAzul campeón una vez más tenemos un recuerdo imborrable de ese dia.

Yo vivi ese sueño cumplido, estar en un campeonato con los mios, desde el estadio, con los que sufirmos las derrotas pero gozamos las victorias, y ese 30 de mayo nunca se podrá olvidar.

Ese día resurgio el ADN azul que siempre permanecerá

Solo el destino y las buenas decisiones podrán ponernos enfrente a otro CruzAzul campeón

Two nights after barely eking out the 1-0 victory on opening night, the Rangers offense exploded for 17 runs in an absolute shellacking of their in-state, and new division, rivals. The Rangers went off for 17 runs on 18 hits, aided by 7 walks, 1 hit batter, and 2 errors that allowed runs to score the plate, including an 8-run 4th inning, where 13 players came to bat. On the opposite side, the Astros were limited to 3 hits and 2 runs by Yu Darvish, who struck out 10 in the complete game.

(Strat note: Offensive lineups intact. That said, holy shit!, what an insane offensive explosion. One of those games where it seemed like every roll of the dice for the Rangers was a hit and every roll for the Astros was a simple out - including the 10 strikeouts. I'm not sure if there's anything to be done, but through 17 games now - 18 if you count the one played but not yet written up - it feels like the offenses are powered up, especially against the bullpens; also, there may be too many injuries. We'll have to see. Also, Rick Ankiel's batting card is a mess, given how bad his season was - it's almost worse than the generic pitcher batting cards. At some point, managerial overstepping may have to occur, if the Astros inexplicably decide to keep starting him [which, of course they will; that's how he got enough at-bats to generate, or not generate, those stats anyways]. And speaking of managerial overstepping, the Astros infield defense is also not good; Marwin González, especially, with a 3e32 at shortstop, is just asking for trouble. Actually, the whole defense is a mess: Carter is 5e12 in left, Wallace is 4e11 at 3rd, Peña is 3e7 at 1st, and even Altuve is 3e10 at second. They finished 51-111 in real life and ... yeah, it checks out. Not sure how long my inner general manager is gonna be able to sit by and watch this mess - and I'm only on game 2!

Funnily enough, the real-life counterpart game was also a blowout, though obviously not to this level: Texas won 7-0, and Darvish was actually even more marvelous, with 14 Ks and having a no-hitter until 1 out in the 9th.)
