Edit:
Finally completed this fic! Here is a very short glossary of some of the terms used, which I will provide a link to in the fic. The rest of the terms are explained in the story:
1. Adavu: a series of basic steps that form the foundation of bharatnatyam performances. These are drilled in dance class.
2. Katakamukha: one of the single hand gestures (part of the standard posture I was taught in early classes, with knees bent at an angle. We kept both our hands in this mudra as a basic starting posture). A reference picture is here.
3. Atman: a reference, in Hinduism, to the true and eternal self, the soul. Consciousness and awareness of yourself is seen as a symptom of possessing a soul.聽
It's the day before my birthday, and I've just completed writing a fic that is very dear to me, on many levels. This past year has been a difficult one, and my writing has helped me cope with that on many levels.
As a former dancer and student of bharatanatyam, and someone who has experienced the lengthy process of trauma, healing and grief, my latest piece offers some insight into those things and the weight they carry in my life, along with my thoughts on the meaning of love.
It is called 'Arangetram' (a post-Shibuya Nanami x Reader) and I hope that you enjoy it.

Have I mentioned recently how good it feels to be dancing again
Have I mentioned recently it only gets some 100 times better if the workshops are run by an anthropologist native to the culture
This is to say I spent 3 hours today recovering my muscle memory of adavus and I'll die tomorrow. I miss bharatanatyam so much. (My knees DO NOT.)
Happy squee.

the mind - body harmony in bharatnatyam | Spardha School Of Music
At Spardha School of Music, Bharatanatyam is not just a dance form but a spiritual experience. Our lessons focus on achieving mind-body harmony, helping dancers express emotions through graceful movements while cultivating mental discipline and physical strength https://www.spardhaschoolofmusic.com/blog/the-mind-body-harmony-in-bharatnatyam
Tumblr media
The mind-body connection has always been revered by many ancient Eastern practices such as yoga, meditation, tai chi, and Ayurveda which talk about a holistic approach towards well-being. A few years ago, I came across a book by Louis Hay, "You Can Heal Your Life," which sheds light on this relationship. It talks about the idea that a person's thoughts and emotions can manifest as physical ailments within their bodies.
1. Why is understanding the body important in the modern world?
In today's busy world, it's crucial to slow down and connect with our bodies. Understanding the body helps us stay calm because the mind and body are connected. Breathing, for example, affects our emotions, which is why practices like pranayama help with stress and anger.
Since the mind and body are linked, improving one can help the other.
Since the mind and body are linked, improving one can help the other. One easy way to do this is by being more physically active. Many studies show that activities like yoga, running, dancing, going to the gym, or playing sports have therapeutic benefits. These activities help loosen up muscles and joints where we often hold stress and tension.聽
Physical activity improves blood flow, balance, coordination, posture, breathing, and flexibility. Having a consistent physical routine also enhances sleep quality, food habits and time management. Some activities, like dance and drama, even allow us to express emotions which helps in regulating them, promoting a more balanced life.
2. How does Bharatnatyam promote well-being?
Bharatnatyam is one such art form. While dancing, different body parts like the eyes, shoulders, neck, hands, fingers, torso, legs, feet, and toes move in synchrony. This not only enhances physical movement but also activates the cognitive.聽
A survey shows that an alarippu (the first piece in a Bharatanatyam repertoire), which is generally 3 minutes long, has approximately 200 movements. These include movements of both major and minor limbs. Apart from the simultaneity in the bodily movements, dancers are also taught to synchronize with the rhythm of the song that is being danced to. These rhythms consist of larger beats and smaller beats which keeps the mind constantly active.聽
3. Benefits of Bharatnatyam as per Ancient Medical Beliefs
The foot and palms consist of various meridian points that correlate to various organs in a human鈥檚 body. Holding mudras and stamping the feet on the floor also enhances the activation of these points.
This mainly helps in stress relaxation, sleep management, and digestion.
For example- the point under the big toe is connected to the brain. Hence, when an adavu-s like kuditta mettu (where the dancer jumps on their toes) is done, the brain gets activated and calms down.
Similarly, the tips of the fingers are connected to the head and the mind while the center of the palm is for the solar plexus (the diaphragm region). So, when a dancer holds a shikara mudra the solar plexus, the mind and the brain gets activated.聽
4. Conclusion
Bharatnatyam is a multidisciplinary art form. Besides telling stories and entertaining, it also provides the dancer with many physical and mental benefits. Understanding and actively engaging with our bodies externally and internally facilitates a holistic and comprehensive approach towards life. And the best part, is you can learn Bharatnatyam online with Spardha.

Kuchipudi: An Exploration of India鈥檚 Classical Dance Form
Kuchipudi, one of the Indian classical dance forms, originates from Andhra Pradesh. Renowned for its dramatic storytelling, graceful movements, and expressive gestures, Kuchipudi blends dance, music, and acting, making it one of the most captivating dance styles in India.
Kuchipudi Individual Training
Kuchipudi Individual Training is an essential aspect of learning this classical dance form. Students undergo personalized instruction to master the intricate footwork, precise rhythm, and dramatic expressions that define Kuchipudi classical dance. The training focuses on building strength, flexibility, and the ability to convey emotions through dance and facial expressions.
Kuchipudi Classroom Training
In Kuchipudi Classroom Training, students learn both theoretical and practical aspects of the dance form. They practice adavu (basic steps), nritta (pure dance), nritya (expressive dance), and natya (acting). The training involves learning specific compositions and mastering mudras (hand gestures) that help express intricate stories and emotions.
Principles of Kuchipudi
The principles of Kuchipudi are built on foundational elements from ancient Indian dance texts. These include:
Graceful movements: Emphasis on fluid and dynamic movements.
Expressive storytelling: Integration of acting and facial expressions to narrate myths and legends.
Rhythm and footwork: The synchronization of movements with intricate rhythms is a hallmark of Kuchipudi.
Kuchipudi Compositions
Kuchipudi performances feature various compositions, such as:
Varnams: Complex pieces that highlight both dance and acting.
Padams: Slow, lyrical pieces with emotional depth.
Tillanas: Rhythmic and lively pieces that conclude a performance. Each composition is accompanied by Carnatic music and often tells a story from Hindu mythology or explores themes of devotion and love.
Famous Kuchipudi Dancers
Several iconic Kuchipudi dancers have contributed to the popularization of the dance form:
Yamini Krishnamurthy: A leading figure in the world of Kuchipudi.
Vijayalakshmi: Known for her innovation in Kuchipudi dance.
Shantala: Recognized for her global outreach in promoting Kuchipudi.
Kuchipudi Classical Dance
As a classical dance, Kuchipudi is a highly theatrical form that combines dance, music, and acting. The emphasis on dramatic expressions and storytelling makes it unique compared to other dance forms. Dancers not only showcase nritta but also integrate nritya and natya to tell a compelling narrative.
Kuchipudi Performance
A typical Kuchipudi performance includes:
Alarippu: A rhythmic warm-up.
Jatiswaram: Pure dance without a story.
Varnam: The core of the performance, involving storytelling.
Padams and Tillanas: Concluding with lighter, more rhythmic pieces.
Kuchipudi Dance Information
Kuchipudi dance is often performed in temples or during cultural festivals. The dance is accompanied by traditional Carnatic music played with instruments like the mridangam, violin, and flute. The dancer wears traditional attire, which includes a sari designed to enhance the fluidity of movements and highlight the footwork.
Indian Classical Dance
Kuchipudi is one of the eight recognized Indian classical dance forms, each representing a different cultural and artistic tradition in India. These dance forms are deeply rooted in mythology, religious rituals, and cultural history, and they are governed by texts like the Natya Shastra. Kuchipudi holds a unique place among them due to its theatrical and expressive nature.
By embracing Kuchipudi, dancers not only learn a traditional art form but also connect deeply with India's rich cultural ethos. Whether through individual training or classroom training, mastering this dance helps preserve and pass down this cultural treasure.

Date: 12.9.23
I survived a 3 hour practice today in the morning for bharatanatyam class today.
Combined it with making some of my own choreographies to some instrumental piece for my classical page.
Had dance class in the evening and my teacher told me that my dance exam went well.
Overall I think my stamina is getting better for certain adavus especially kuditta and tat tai ta ha because they literally burn the thighs.
Also I now have a glow on my skin as my mother commented. So hopefully I utilize all my time for dance before college starts because after that it's really going to be challenging to handle both

so i have started to learn bharatanatyam after a gap of four years, and i really want to build my stamina so i can get through most of the adavus without feeling ded
what are your tips for building stamina for classical dancers?
Oh you started off again that's amazing!
1. Your teacher would give better tips than me, so do take their suggestions too.
Now from my experience what I did after my gap year-
Steady Progress: Start with small durations of practice like around 15-20 minutes a day and slowly increasing it, that way your body too will mould itself to the time length without giving up. Also, this will take some time though at certain points you might feel frustrated at not being able to do it for do long. Little steps will take you a long way, and with regular practice, you can and will see the difference.
Warmup: Do not directly jump to adavus. A 5 min warmup could work for a 30 min practice and a 10 min for an hour long. The body does not directly need to start hitting the ground, let it prepare gradually. Breathing exercise, shoulder rotations, bending down, full sitting jumps, leg stretches these work well. Also now thanks to the internet, there are many warm up exercise videos suited just for bharatanatyam, so if you need a guided video (which is better) use them.
Dance but a fun game method: As much as you and I may love dance, some times the practice feels exhausting and maybe even boring because you do the same thing everytime and then when you take a break, laziness might step in which might just bring you to square one. Now taking a break is good, but you know how the mind works when doing something a little hard physically or mentally especially when starting an activity? 'Ugh will do this later. Let me not sit in araimandi and just mark the steps etc' If you are at home studying, take a 1 min break and sit in araimandi for that one min. It would be difficult though initially but it is great for building stamina to sit in that position for longer times when you do margams. And yeah you can also play around with the three speeds during the adavu just for fun.
Take breaks, don't be too hard on yourself: you used to learn dance before so you would know that this artform will take time, so when you feel tired or if you feel your legs giving out, take rest. This is a general advice lol.
The +1 method: This method was suggested by my mother. It would do no good to practice in your comfort level nor will it be good to overexert yourself. Acc to my mother she advised me that each time you feel comfortable while doing a step, take a step forward i.e maybe quickly switch speed or do the step for some more time. Eg: If you are doing Tattadavu number 2, after doing all the three, do the first speed for two times and then end it. Soon you will observe that day by day you can easily go from 1-2-3 and 3-2-1. The +1 method makes you go a lil step forward and you can see how you progress.
Yeah soo these are what I do from my experience. Hope these help you out and keep dancing 馃尭
