The problem with learning words by just reading them and figuring it out based on context is that that doesn't always work and sometimes you look up a word that you've been aware of (but have thankfully never used) since you were five and discover that it means. something completely unrelated to what you thought it meant
#ANYWAY DID YALL KNOW THAT 'PROSEY' MEANS BORING#ive only ever encountered it at the beginning of the hobbit when the narrator butts in on bilbo talking about gandalfs fireworks#to say 'you will notice already that mr baggins was not quite so prosey as he liked to believe'#I THOUGHT IT WAS LIKE PROSEY -> PROSE -> SOMETHING TO DO WITH WRITING AND COMPOSING#i thought the narrator was making a smart remark about bilbos use of metaphors#which i thought was like. a sort of backhanded joke because the whole book is written like that#no it just means he had hobbies and interests shdbjsjdndlshsbkshsbsks#anyway im definitely gonna start abusing this knowledge posthaste
