This tree had been planted in the shadow of dead gasometers to commemorate a family’s grief in a once popular spot, but now stands in a barely tended memorial garden in the corner of a business park, dwarfed by corporate warehouses with high fences and CCTV cameras, the access roads rumbling with delivery lorries. I wondered if the family still came to this spot to mourn, over thirty years on, congregating at the plaque to a chorus of air-brake hisses and grinding gears. When a spot is chosen to commemorate a loved one, we imagine it will remain that way forever and cannot envisage those future upheavals which might alter the terrain around it. If the spot becomes forgotten, does that mean the person is forgotten with it? I believe that the contrary is true. Perhaps, every now and then, a random visitor to one of the distribution centres will stumble on this tiny plaque during a break from deliveries, full of amazement at the discovery of a secret garden. They might pause for a second to think about the person Andrea might have been, and why she departed this earthly realm at such a young age. In that moment her spirit will flicker alive again, like the gas light on the nearby pillar, in the mind of a total stranger from another century. There is a wonderful magic to that, I think.

04.09.2021 Zwickau - Alter Gasometer / Lesung & Akustikshows

Changes to the Monaco Circuit over the years
1929 - 1972
A few chicanes were added and changed slightly over this time as well as some resurfacing for safety measures but other than that it stayed the same.
1973 - 1975
The train station at the hairpin along with the old tunnel were removed in 1973 and were replaced with a modern hotel complex, and land reclaimed from the sea created a circuit extension around a new outdoor swimming pool. A new narrow curve around the Rascasse restaurant replaced the gasometer curve, while the additional space regained from the sea allowed for a permanent pit lane for the first time alongside the start/finish straight.
1976 - 1985
In 1976, alterations were made at Rascasse and Ste Dévote to slow the cars,
1986 - 1996
In 1986 the left-right chicane (Chicane du Port) which had increasingly been taken at alarming speed was replaced with a new chicane (Nouvelle Chicane), closer to the tunnel exit. This again included land reclaimed from the harbour, giving the benefit of space for a small area of run-off. It slowed the cars considerably, though a bump on entry ensured this was still a tricky section of track.
1996 - 2021
In 1997, the original S-bend around the swimming pool was redesigned, with the barriers moved further back. The new section was named 'Virage Louis Chiron' in honour of the 1931 GP victor and long-time clerk of the course.
The next phase of new work only affected the southern side of the port. Some 5,000 square metres of land were reclaimed from the sea. The circuit between the second part of the swimming pool section and La Rascasse was moved 10 metres and completely redesigned.
The S-bends at the exit of the swimming pool section were tightened into a slower right-left chicane. The following year saw the opening of a new, much wider pit lane with by building over the old track between the swimming pool and La Rascasse. This provided 250 square metres of extra pits space for the teams – though they still remain amongst the most cramped on the F1 calendar
Looking at this circuit it is absolutely insane how little it has changed in nearly 100 years of racing around the streets of the principality.

Leeds Beckett University presents nine architecture and design projects
A "Recycled Fun Palace" and pottery studios for autistic and non-verbal people are included in Dezeen's latest school show by Leeds Beckett University.
Also included is a project that imagines a post-viral Blackpool and another that explores the idea that colonising another planet is the solution to climate change.
Leeds Beckett University
School: Leeds Beckett University, Leeds School of Architecture Courses: BA(Hons) Architecture, BA(Hons) Landscape Architecture and Design, BA(Hons) Interior Architecture and Design, MA Landscape Architecture, Master of Architecture (MArch) Tutors: Claire Hannibal, Tom Vigar, Simon Warren, Keith Andrews, Doreen Bernath, Nick Tyson, John Maccleary, Chris Royffe, Sarah Mills, George Epolito, Mohammad Taleghani, Alia Fadel, Amanda Wanner and Maryam Osman
School statement:
"Leeds School of Architecture questions what architecture and the built environment can contribute to the world we live in from a cultural, social and political point of view. As a result, we have expanded modes of practice, research, and inter-disciplinary work to inform new critical voices and collectively empower creative minds to tackle our current environmental and ethical challenges.
"Our continued school ethos of collaboration enables new design problems and solutions to emerge, and the projects exhibited within this showcase crucially engage with this theme.
"There have been many student successes as a result of the school's continued collective action, studio agendas, and the commitment of its students and course staff teams.
"During 20/21, opportunities for our students to locate their practice in wider contexts included collaborations on projects with Crescent Arts - Scarborough, the Forestry Commission, Henshaws Specialist College, Leeds Art Gallery, Portsmouth University, Temple University - Philadelphia, New Wortley Community Association, CATCH (Community Action to Create Hope) - Harehills, Halifax Opportunities Trust, and MAP Charity, Leeds.
"The work presented brings together student work from across the following programmes: BA(Hons) Architecture, BA(Hons) Interior Architecture, and Design, BA(Hons) Landscape Architecture and Design, MA Landscape Architecture and Master in Architecture (MArch)."
The Survivor's Sanctuary (The Black Plague of Blackpool, The Walking Dead) by Dominic Stewart
"Once a hamlet by the sea, Blackpool emerged as a significant seaside destination for the well-to-do in the nineteenth century. Since this period of boom, however, it has suffered a decline, and although it remains a destination, it currently exists in two states lodged between the permanent – its residents – and the transitory – its fleeting visitors.
"The project imagines a post-viral townscape that questions ideas of community and the fragile state of our urban fabric. Set within a global pandemic, the rebirth of civilisation forces inhabitants to examine historic ways of building whilst developing technologies of energy production.
"The Survivor's Sanctuary proposes a future that challenges ideas of self-sufficiency, sustainable building, and the structural adaptability of reclaimed materials. A testbed for ideas, the success of the future lies in the hands of those who have survived."
Student: Dominic Stewart Course: BA(Hons) Architecture Tutor: Claire Hannibal
The Recycled Fun Palace: Repurposing Philadelphia's Refinery Infrastructure through Community Institutes by Luke Singleton
"Citizen Agency studio projects were located in Philadelphia, USA, commencing with The Edmund N. Bacon Urban Design Awards Student Competition. The site is a 1,300-acre redundant refinery close to Philadelphia's centre. 13 students prepared one group entry titled 'Community Institutes'.
"Our design studio was awarded third prize. From each student's contribution to the competition, a community institute proposition was developed.
"The Recycled Fun Palace reuses a disused gasometer. The immense structure takes on a new role, acting as the framework for a Cedric Price-inspired superstructure. In response to the ever-increasing climate emergency, the new architecture has been constructed by reusing refinery infrastructure."
Student: Luke Singleton Course: BA(Hons) Architecture Tutor: Simon Warren
The Seven Vails of The Lord by Cassie Norrish
"The Abstract Machines studio projects were based in York and explored the following propositional themes. Research into the cultural manifestations of political parties with students defining their position; exploration of the spatial systems through which party organisations could manifest themselves; and how an architectural language can represent the ideals and values of the defined organisation within a particular culture.
"Norrish's project called 'The Seven Vails of The Lord' examines institutional religion's subordination of women through hierarchy, ritual, and spatial exclusion.
"The project deconstructs the faith's given axioms through a series of narrative spatial sequences overlaid with subverted historical and contemporary church rituals."
Student: Cassie Norrish Course: BA(Hons) Architecture Tutor: Keith Andrews
The Colony by Sam Pick
"This studio explored plans. It considered how they are created and what implications this method has on their realisation as spaces.
"Students developed unique approaches to plans as counter positions to rational 2D methods. Projects were set in Greenwich, with students given free control over briefs and programmes to explore their approaches.
"This project proposes that colonising another planet is the only response to the increasing danger of climate change. The 'colony' uses 3D-printing methods to explore spatial limitations and consider how the inhabitants might cope with being in control of their own environment.
"The spatial consequences of 3D printing are explored alongside a politically charged narrative over time, with the colony inhabitants coming together and pulling apart as they modify their surroundings."
Student: Sam Pick Course: BA(Hons) Architecture Tutor: Tom Vigar
Breaking the Mould: Pottery Workshops for Autistic and Non-verbal Individuals by Hannah Elebert
"Through art-based studio practice and self-generated projects, our interior architecture and design graduating students create sustainable interior spaces, engaging with the adaptive reuse of buildings and structures in response to contemporary social, ethical and political issues.
"Elebert's project advocates for environmental inclusion through creating an interactive space designed to accommodate the needs of autistic and non-verbal individuals.
"Located in the Former Calcining Works, a Grade II Listed Building in Stoke-on-Trent, the project extends the legacy of the site including learning spaces and pottery workshops for the manipulation of clay.
"Focus is given to the detailing of transition spaces that address the specific accessibility needs of autistic and non-verbal children."
Student: Hannah Elebert Course: BA(Hons) Interior Architecture and Design Tutors: Maryam Osman and Amanda Wanner
Leeds Innovation District by Magdalena Maciejewska
"This studio was designed to create opportunities for students to demonstrate creativity, personal focus and design competence through undertaking a comprehensive landscape architecture challenge in Leeds Innovation District.
"Together with Leeds universities and the teaching hospitals NHS Trust, the city have embarked on creating a focal point for innovation in the city.
"Alongside development opportunities, they are encouraging collaboration between universities, health professionals and civic leaders to enable business and job creation and growth.
"This project is a landscape proposition at the heart of the proposed district, including sculptures built with solar panels and corten steel that will power street lighting and water features."
Student: Magdalena Maciejewska Course: BA(Hons) Landscape Architecture and Design Tutors: Alia Fadel and Mohammad Taleghani
Kirkstall Forge Sponge Park by Nisha Hawkridge
"The design of Kirkstall Forge Sponge Park on the River Aire in Leeds is driven by natural interventions. It creates a resilient landscape that responds to the impacts of flooding and climate change now and in the future.
"The park will support the river by protecting the surrounding settlements and filtering water runoff before it reaches the river; provide wildlife with biodiverse habitats along with clean river water which will promote aquatic life; and bring people together with both flooding and wildlife through natural strategies
"Kirkstall Forge Sponge Park will embrace flooding and proposes natural features that work with increased rainfall and not against it."
Student: Nisha Hawkridge Course: Master of Landscape Architecture Tutors: John Maccleary and Chris Royffe
Skeletons, Skins and Parallaxes: Laboratories of Politics and Kinetic Inhabitation by Amy Ferguson
"The Cinematic Commons studio seeks to depart from the current challenging situation – isolation protocols, domestic implosion and disabled public realms – to probe alternative possibilities of spatial conditions to resist the control, disconnection and dissolution of urban public spaces.
"While the connection of homes and streets in terms of political demonstrations has in recent decade been altered due to the capabilities of instant and mobile documentation, this recent period of COVID-19 lockdown further magnified the desire towards the combination of remote and in-situ political movements – the era of 'armchair activism.'
"This project aims to recognise the potential of linking a locally immersive and adaptive environment of work and occupancy with globalised political campaigns on worldwide environmental and ecological issues.
"Thus, the project creates 'laboratories of politics' equipped with architecturally kinetic mechanisms of 'skeletons, skins and parallaxes', drawing inspiration from the adaptability of film and theatre production sets and multi-locational virtual reality relaying technologies for future inhabitants.
"The project probes a series of protest architecture for activists and a hub of 'politics-as-lived' for the like-minded to research, campaign and form communities of affinities.
"The adaptability of the architectural, kinetic mechanism activates the protest territories, occupying and transforming spaces within the street, on structures and within buildings.
"Many parts of the architectural, kinetic system can be re-distributed in the protest territory and also move to remote locations yet keeping a synchronic relation with the base labs. The parallax of space across time extends to a parallax of multiple situations and modes of activisms."
Student: Amy Ferguson Course: Master in Architecture (MArch) Tutor: Doreen Bernath
A Post Pandemic Pocket Book to Re-connect a Faceless Society by Grace Butcher
"The ‘Post Pandemic Story Book’ takes the opportunity to reconnect society through participatory design. The project focuses on 'care' to explore modes of inhabitation for a multi-generational population, providing user-modified spatial layouts connected by generous garden spaces that allow for escape or chance meeting.
"The Liverpool North Docks site is restructured through a series of engineered timber frameworks which are then populated by a set of conditions and increasingly finer material systems that negotiate from the strategic to human scale. The architectural outcome is driven by user appropriation and demand for open-ended programmes of occupation, offering creative capabilities for an uncertain future."
Student: Grace Butcher Course: Master in Architecture (MArch) Tutor: Nick Tyson

People | Top Film Photos 2017
See: Places | Things
Film photography kept me going this year. It kept me curious and humble, and my hunger for a gorgeous shot led me to a lot of places I would never have seen otherwise.
I’m a writer first, but my words are something I have complete control over. As a perfectionist, this can drive me pretty mental at times; I could spend an eternity combing through a story or blog post changing this or that word and never feel done. While my perfectionist tendencies come out at the editing stage of film making (I don’t really edit my photos unless I have to alter exposure), there is an urgency about capturing a moment that will never come again, having limited film or space on your memory card. When you’re behind the lens, you are capturing something rather than manufacturing it. Even in a controlled shoot, you are still limited by time and tools. Writing can only be limited by your imagination, and while that’s freeing in some ways, it can be terrifying in others.
These visual mediums are creative outlets that allow me to follow my instincts without so much pressure to be perfect. I know I can’t control the weather or the set of someone’s teeth or whether they blink just as I’m pressing the shutter. It doesn’t mean I don’t strive to be better, and I would love to do some planned shoots next year, but I guess because I don’t define myself as a photographer or cinematographer it takes a lot of the pressure off to be revolutionary. I just do what feels right.
But enough about that.
I was going to choose ten photos overall, but that proved to be literally impossible. Instead I’ve chosen thirty overall, divided into three categories. The first is People.
One of my favourite things about taking up this hobby is the beautiful pictures I’ve snapped of my loved ones. I’ve always dreamed of taking photographs that captured the specific energy of a person or a moment, and when I look at these ones I feel like I’ve done that. These are photos I love of people I love.
1. Avalon. Gasometer Hotel, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak ULTRAMAX 400.
This girl is a whirlwind in the best kind of way. Interested and interesting. Kind. Spontaneous. Ridiculously beautiful. She’s unlike anyone you’ve ever met; a girl who turns heads wherever she goes and knows it, who isn’t afraid to tell strange men that she’s the CEO of a radical feminist magazine and laughs at their feigned support (she doesn’t care what they think). That very magazine is how we met online; I became a regular contributor and she flattered me when we met in person by telling me that she’d told her workmates “If I fall off this ladder, the magazine goes to Holly Way!”
That night we went to a feminist zine launch that was definitely more of a gay 90s rave and I danced in a club for the first time in years. The photos I took were risky - the girls were dancing and the smoke was thick - but even the blurry ones have an energy to them that I love. Moving subjects will give you some duds, but so much more life in the good ones.
2. Connor. Inverloch, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak ULTRAMAX 400.
Connor was so bloody stoked with this view, and I feel so warm when I look at this photo and his huge, genuine smile.
3. Stuart. Squeaky Beach, Wilsons Prom, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 120.
If you want a glimpse of how much I - and the rest of my family - love Stuart you can watch this video I made for him for Christmas. Basically we had only met his British ass once before he moved into our house for twelve weeks. Luckily he turned out not to be a murderer but rather the most lovely, genuine, polite and cheerful dude you’ve ever met. It was devastating when he left - almost a month ago now - but the group chat is still going strong. More importantly, we’ll always have the memories of him reading us A Street Cat Named Bob on Squeaky Beach as the sun went down.
4. Rhiannon. Inverloch, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak ULTRAMAX 400.
With the year we’ve had, it’s an indescribable pleasure to see my sister smiling and happy. On this particular day five of us drove to the coast, ate watermelon and baguettes on the beach and just escaped the rising tide at the end of a dusty pink dusk. On the way home we put on my ultimate sing alongs playlist and screeched Tribute and Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of our lungs. What could possibly be better?
5. Rhiannon and Brendan. Blue Rock Dam, Victoria, Australia. Pentax Espio 955, Fuji Superia X-TRA 400.
Another example of moving subjects. An imperfect shot with tangible mood.
6. Stuart. Blue Rock Dam, Victoria, Australia. Pentax Espio 955, Fuji Superia X-TRA 400.
The hour or two we had to ourselves at this outlandishly gorgeous dam are some of my favourite hours of all time. Stuart had a swim and gave us all heart attacks when he brushed up against a branch (thanks bitch) but other than that we were just so... relaxed. Climbing trees, eating, baking in the Aussie heat, telling dumb jokes and having Stuart read to us again. Then a bunch of bogans showed up with their dogs off the lead and disrupted the serenity, but whatever.
7. Beren. Cataract Gorge, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 400.
This photo is from the first colour roll of film I ever shot. We surprised our family by showing up unexpectedly to celebrate Dad’s 50th and stayed for a few days. It was bittersweet as we had just lost our cat, Evie. It was a hard time, but spending those few days with our dad and siblings we rarely get to see made a difference, as did spending time in Tasmania, which has become a beautiful second home to me. I like the composition and natural feel of this photo, and just the fact that it’s one of my favourite people in one of my favourite places.
8. James. Red Wood Forest, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 120.
I have a feeling this was either on or just after Easter, but I really can’t remember. Either way this place was absolutely magical. Even though this photo is blurry (the ISO of this film was not a good fit for a forest on a cloudy day) I just think it’s cool. I love getting action shots of people focusing on something, just natural and in their element. Watching James experiment with the camera has always been one of my favourite things to do. Also, he looks so fucking grown up in this picture.
9. Nienna. Tamar Wetlands, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 120.
Definitely one of my favourite memories from this year; getting up before dawn to catch the sunrise at the wetlands with Dad and Nienna. It’s the kind of thing I’d do way more often if I had a car, as there’s something so beautiful about being at mercy to the cycles of the sun to get your photo. And we weren’t that lucky. It was overcast as hell and we got maybe a few minutes of a few slices of pink sunlight through the clouds. But that didn’t matter. We got photos that felt different than we expected and had a wonderful adventure in the meantime. To be separated from my sister so greatly in both years and distance but still manage to have such a strong bond and so much in common is something I am so, so grateful for.
10. Georgia. Home, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 120.
This photograph makes me feel so many things. I grabbed it while Georgia was reading out a bit of her novel to Rhiannon and I, and it was just a moment that was so close and pure and poignant that I couldn’t help but try and capture it. That connection is what I treasure most about my relationship with Georgia. Ever since we were kids I feel like our bond has been free of judgement and pretense. She’s one of the few people I feel I can be all of my selves with instead of just choosing one suitable side to present. We don’t see each other nearly as much as we should, which makes moments like these all the more special.

In Eigenregie.
Tour 2010: 15.01.2020 -Düsseldorf, Cali Eats 16.01.2020 -Jena, Paradiescafé 17.01.2020 -Greiz, Alte Papierfabrik 18.01.2020 -Halle/Saale, Club No. 12 19.01.2020 -Ilmenau, Kulturfabrik 22.01.2020 -München, 089 23.01.2020 -Zwickau, Alter Gasometer 24.01.2020 -Wiesenburg, Mal’s Scheune 26.01.2020 -Berlin, Privatclub http://recordjet.fty.li/AlexandraJanzenErinnerungAnDieZukunft Links: https://www.alexandrajanzen.de/ https://www.facebook.com/alexandrajanzenmusik/ https://www.instagram.com/alexandrajanzen/ https://www.youtube.com/user/alexandrajanzen Read the full article
