Hi, American here because Mexico is in the American continent. Hermosillo, Sonora reaches 50°C sometimes, and it maintains that temperature through two months. Right now we're at 40°C, we're at 7:39pm... I have some tips for people who are white and haven't experienced a heat wave like this:
WEAR SUN SCREEN.
EVEN IF THERE'S NO SUN IF IT'S HOT IT'S HOT, THE SUN ISN'T THE ONLY PROBLEM WHEN THERE'S HEAT WAVES.
Don't go out after 11am and before 5pm. And check the temperature after 5pm because the heat can continue even without the sun as asphalt and buildings absorb heat like crazy.
If you HAVE to go out WEAR SUNSCREEN, a cap/hat/non-transparent umbrella. If you can stand it wear a cotton long sleeve shirt. Believe me the sun is ruthless during a heat wave.
ALWAYS TAKE A WATER BOTTLE WITH YOU. Freeze some water at the bottom of the bottle overnight if it's freezer safe and then before you go out pour regular water in. There's gonna be mad condensation, but it'll keep your water cold longer, and the condensation can be used to dampen a towel.
Which brings me to this point: carry a small hand towel or thick hanky. Dampen it with water, swing it a bit to cool it down, and put it on the back of your neck or pass it gently all over your face.
If you start feeling faint immediate go into a place that has a fan or AC, but try not to stand directly before either because you can get sick and your body can suffer from it.
WEAR SUNSCREEN.
KEEP HYDRATED. even if you're inside your house, keep hydrated and try to reduce the intake of sugary drinks. Tea doesn't help as much, but if you must drink something else, try not to sugar your tea too much and don't add milk. BUT KEEP PLAIN WATER NEARBY, and stock up on electrolytes.
Eat fresh stuff like cucumbers, watermelon, melon, jicama root, stuff like that. Cut them up, chill them and eat them as snacks, they do help with the heat. (I suggest adding a little salt and lemon to watermelon, jicama, and cucumbers.)
ALWAYS WEAR SHADES OUTSIDE. Believe me, the sun IS ruthless and it can hurt your eyes.
Try not to wear thin soled shoes. Thongs and sandals sound like a good option because of the heat, but your feet are gonna suffer; the floor is lava right now, and the sun will burn the tops of your feet. If you MUST wear those cute sandals you just bought PUT SUNSCREEN ON THE TOPS OF YOUR FEET. But preferably wear trainers or something similar, and wear socks.
DON'T PULL YOUR SHOES OFF AND THEN TOUCH THE COLD FLOOR OF YOUR HOME IMMEDIATELY. It.will.hurt. And your bones can "twist", which will bring you problems later.
A spray bottle with tap water will be your friend, spray towards a fan and let the mist refresh you.
A damp towel in front of your fan can help, too.
Wear cotton clothes, specially underwear! Or at least cotton blend, linen, activewear or something breathable. Your skin will thank you.
If you feel like you can't cool down with anything take a shower, make it temperate, not too cold nor too hot. Then let your fan finish drying you off, usually that does the trick.
I dunno if it happens to all people who have had Covid, but after I had it regulating my temperature has been a hassle. Please keep close attention to how you're feeling, if you feel faint, have a headache, nausea, etc call 999, tell someone who accompanies you and start first aid. https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/heat-stroke-symptoms-and-treatment
Which brings me here: DON'T GO OUT ALONE. Heatstroke hits your very fast even if you haven't had any other heat problems. DON'T IGNORE THE SIGNS.
I think that's all I have to give right now for human protection. Please don't think this is "summer weather, finally!". These temperatures are CRAZY. Summer weather is 33 at the most, from 40 up is a death sentence for many many vulnerable individuals. Specially if it gets humid, even with wind. Now, if you know there's strays in your street:
Keep water dishes out and in the shade. If you can add ice cubes please do.
Put out boxes in the shade so the strays can use them to rest in them.
Keep dry food out in the shade. Wet food will go bad really fast in that heat.
Now onto health hazard things:
Keep trash in well-closed bags, and in their well-close wastebaskets, specially biodegradable trash. It WILL go bad REALLY FAST.
Spray for flies and roaches, the heat makes them come out a lot and roaches and spiders and other insects will look for shelter in your house.
Do not keep food out of the fridge, even if it's not exactly for the fridge. Eggs, bread, soft pastries, fruit, they can go bad really fast in that heat, specially if you don't have an AC, but sometimes even if you do.
Keep an eye on your fridge. You will feel it's less cold than usual, that's because it's hotter on the outside and it needs to work harder to keep cold. Adjust accordingly and check your leftovers and dairy and other easily spoiled food.
Wash your dishes as soon as you use them. The crumbs and bits will go bad fast and attract flies.
I think that's all!! If I remember anything else I'll post it! Please take care of yourself and your own, and I hope nothing serious happens!!
