Barr Says âVoices of Peacefulâ Protests Over George Floydâs Death âHijacked by Violent Radical Elementsâ
Attorney General William Barr is condemning violence during protests that have broken out across the U.S.
âWith the rioting that is occurring in many of our cities around the country, the voices of peaceful and legitimate protests have been hijacked by violent radical elements,â Barr wrote in a statement on Sunday. âGroups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate, violent, and extremist agenda.â
Barr put his foot down as he called for an end to the âwatching the violenceâ and to start âto confront and stop it.â He said the riots and what he called domestic terrorism âundercuts the urgent work that needs to be doneâ between the law enforcement and communities.
âPreventing reconciliation and driving us apart is the goal of these radical groups, and we cannot let them succeed.â
He later wrote, âThe violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly.â
Read Barrâs full statement below:

Additionally, as Barrâs spokesperson tweeted late Sunday, âAs a reminder, it is a federal crime to cross state lines or to use interstate facilities to incite or participate in violent rioting. We WILL be enforcing these laws.â

On Sunday afternoon, President Donald Trump noted on Twitter that he will designate Antifa as a terrorist organization.
National Security Advisor Robert OâBrien also suggested on Sunday that he believes the violence âis being driven by Antifa.â
In describing Antifa, the ADL writes on its website, âThese violent counter-protesters are often part of âantifaâ (short for âantifascistâ), a loose collection of groups, networks and individuals who believe in active, aggressive opposition to far right-wing movements.â
âTheyâre militants who are coming in and burning our cities, and weâre going to get to the bottom of it,â OâBrien told CNN.
These statements come as protests â both peaceful and violent â were sparked following the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after he had his neck pinned by a police officerâs knee.
The United States of America will be designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization.
â Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 31, 2020
Curfews were imposed in several U.S. cities as protests continued to heat up over the weekend, as IJR reported.
The White House also indicated that it would not be taking steps to federalize the National Guard at the moment, as IJR also reported.
âWeâre not going to federalize the Guard at this time. But, if necessary, we have further military assets that can be deployed,â OâBrien told reporters on Sunday. âWeâll do whatever the governors or mayors need to keep control of their cities.â

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) plans to call DOJ inspector general Michael Horowitz to testify before congress regarding his officeâs audit of the FBIâs FISA application process, which was released Tuesday and revealed potentially systematic abuses of the transparency measures required of the Bureau when agents interact with the FISA court.âI have just been briefed on Inspector General Horowitzâs audit of FISA applications involving American citizens. This random audit shows discrepancies regarding verification of the information under the Woods Procedures,â Graham said in a press release. âI intend to have Inspector General Horowitz come to the Committee to explain his findings and receive his recommendations about how to change the program.âHorowitzâs latest report revealed that the FBI included âapparent errors or inadequately supported factsâ in all 29 FISA surveillance applications filed between 2014 and 2019 and reviewed as part of the audit. The Woods Procedure dictates that the Justice Department verify the accuracy of and provide evidentiary support for all facts stated in its FISA application. The FBI is required to share with the FISA Court all relevant information compiled in a Woods file when applying for a surveillance warrant.Four of the 29 applications lacked Woods files entirely, while the other 25 had âan average of about 20 issues per application reviewed, with a high of approximately 65 issues in one application and less than 5 issues in another application.ââFBI and NSD officials we interviewed indicated to us that there were no efforts by the FBI to use existing FBI and NSD oversight mechanisms to perform comprehensive, strategic assessments of the efficacy of the Woods Procedures or FISA accuracy, to include identifying the need for enhancements to training and improvements in the process, or increased accountability measures,â the report states.Horowitz recommended that the FBI begin to âsystematically and regularly examineâ its Woods reviews to uncover abuse, beginning with a âphysical inventory to ensure that Woods Files exist for every FISA application submitted to the FISC in all pending investigations.âIn a statement after the auditâs release, the DOJ said that it is âcommitted to putting the Inspector Generalâs recommendations into practice and to implementing reforms that will ensure all FISA applications are complete and accurate.â> DOJ statement on todayâs report from IG Horowitz identifying concerns with the FBIâs handling of procedures related to FISA applications. pic.twitter.com/DAiB61IoSk> > -- KerriKupecDOJ (@KerriKupecDOJ) March 31, 2020The findings are the latest in a growing trail of FBI abuses involving the FISA Court. Horowitz appeared in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in December after finding âbasic and fundamental errorsâ in the FBIâs Crossfire Hurricane investigation of the 2016 Trump campaign, and blamed the FBI chain of command for lacking oversight in the FISA applications used to surveil Trump-campaign adviser Carter Page.âThe circumstances reflect a failure, as we outline in the report, not just by those who prepared the applications, but also by the managers and supervisors in the Crossfire Hurricane chain of command, including FBI senior officials who were briefed as the investigation progressed,â Horowitz said in his statement to Graham and the other senators.Later in the hearing, Senator Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) said Horowitzâs findings showed how the âthe FBI effectively meddled in an ongoing presidential campaign,â while other Republicans acknowledged that they had not realized FISA abuse was a serious threat.âAs a national security hawk, Iâve argued with Mike Lee in the four-and-a-half or five years that Iâve been in the Senate that stuff just like this couldnât possibly happen at the FBI and at the Department of Justice,â Senator Ben Sasse (R., Neb.) said. â . . . Mike Lee has warned me for four-and-a-half years the potential for abuse in this space is terrible and I constantly defended the integrity and the professionalism of the bureau and of the department that you couldnât have something like this happen.âSenator Thom Tillis (R., N.C.) echoed Sasse in recognizing Mike Leeâs past criticisms of FISA.âBecause weâve now seen the abuses we were warned about, you can smirk again, you were right,â Tillis told the Utah Republican.
