Rasco feat. Defari & Evidence - "Major League" Laid in Full by M-Boogie Song released in 1998. Mix released in 1999. Underground Hip Hop
Dope and raw late 90s cut by this trio of vets from the Cali underground. Rasco dropped his solo debut album, Time Waits for No Man, on Stones Throw Records in '98, but he also put out a 12-inch that same year that had a remix of a track from that album on it too, called "Major League." And with that remix came a better, Melba Moore-sampled beat, different deliveries of the chorus and first two verses, and a brand new third verse from Rasco as well.
And ya just gotta give it up for the ever-underappreciated Evidence on this one, especially, folks. I know he's a pretty well known MC among hip hop heads already as one-third of Dilated Peoples, but his always smooth and laid-back monotone style still feels vastly underrated to me. Here he delivers a full middle verse riddled with nothing but baseball metaphors, and then while Rasco follows up with a decent baseball verse of his own, it doesn't end up holding a candle to Ev's.
Produced by Joey Chavez; cuts and scratches by DJ Babu, who is a member of Dilated Peoples too.

LEARN FROM THOUGHT KEEP GOING
Tumblr media
Life is to short, so I always say, keep your head up high and impress yourself with what you know and how you feel. music can help but what you find interesting keep at it as long as it brings you joy and doesn't hurt others intentionally then go for it. Feel good about yourself positivity is key but working for it is the most satisfying in the end. Music always helps for me so I do it, some say a lot of negatives others positives but it brings me joy and that's a fact. When timbaland and Missy came out in music for the first time there was a lot of skepticism now they are legends that's a lesson worth learning I say.

Dear listener, when I’m not posting music so underground that it’s wedged to the Earth’s lower mantle, I’m generally trying to remind you of great acts you’ve forgotten or have never heard of before. Decidedly on the latter for this post, I would like to point out no ‘music blog’ should be without at least one jam by Massive Attack. I don’t really need to sing this band’s praises, their accolades and accomplishments in the music industry are well known. But for the uninitiated, I don’t think that I can recommend an act that, past or present, manages to produce a more hypnotic or enigmatically sensory experience with electronic music. They were trend-setters all the way through the mid to late 90’s with their music simultaneously hitting it BIG at dance clubs, college campuses and the public at large all over Europe and the United States. If you happen to enjoy hip hop, post-punk, industrial, psychedelic, dub and/or dance… Massive Attack is your one-stop shop for ALL of the above. They’re also industry pioneers, having virtually invented trip-hop which was at the time dubbed ‘The Bristol Sound’, as their first album, Blue Lines, is widely considered to be the first trip-hop album made and it was recorded (at least partially) in Bristol, England. They're known for regularly including extra instrumentalists for live performances and became recognized for their collaborations with the likes of Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser, and the immortal Sinéad O'Connor when they needed a talented lady vocalist to enhance their instrumentals. The one and only piece of work this group has released in the last thirteen years is a 3-song EP, so I think it’s rather safe to assume that we won’t be seeing any more Earth-rending albums or spirited live performances from them for the foreseeable future. However, their discography is already, in two words, *a masterpiece* and I really can’t recommend you either revisit their discography or dive in for the first time. If you smash play on the track above, you’ll be immersed in Dissolved Girl from their OUTSTANDING 1998 album Mezzanine. After this musical entry, I’ve got a few weeks worth of Halloween music headed your way!
Tumblr media
There is so much more detail I could have gone into for this post, but a lengthy group history didn’t feel appropriate for the purpose of brevity. It’s always possible you won’t or don’t like their works. But the only indefatigable way to know if you personally resonate with their tunes is to give them the old community college try, or to simply revisit their albums and start all over again. But be warned, going down the rabbit hole of their discography might leave you temporarily addicted. I would know, I tried it myself for this post. 1998 San Francisco Playlist (YouTube)
Really ain't nothin' like the city of San Francisco when it comes to the music. The hippie-psychedelic Haight-Ashbury vibes of the 60s ended up getting baked into the cyber-psychonautic underground rave scene of the 90s; there's been a whole bunch of house music; a rich folk tradition; Bay Area hip hop developed into its own oft-overlooked entity; a pretty deep pocket of turntablism; and, of course, plenty of indie rock too. Quite a mix of scenes, and I'm obviously missing a bunch too!
So this week I'm giving you all something that feels like a long-forgotten CD that some college kid who was attending school in San Francisco may have burnt back in 1998. It's an eclectic, completely underground mix of electronic, hip hop, and a little bit of indie too; and it's been collecting dust at the bottom of a drawer now for over 25 years!
We kick off with a dubby deep house remix of Paris' A Reminiscent Drive's "Two Sides to Every Story" by SF native Charles Webster—14.4K plays on YouTube across a handful of uploads—and then we follow that up with a mix of UK group Globo's "Breakdown" by legendary breakbeat/trip hop pioneer Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto, who started calling the Golden Gate City his home in 1993—under 500 plays on that one as of right now. A little after that we get more breakbeat from a *very* obscure duo called Astralabe, whose cinematic, tribal-psychedelic masterpiece, "Guimbri Dub (Self-Cremating Fire of Passion Remix)," appears to be the only song that they ever released, and is included exclusively on an uncredited DJ mix called The Vertical Iris; currently sitting at a measly 92 plays.
Then on the hip hop side of things, we have some lo-fi dustiness from Double Life and Raw B called "Cycles of the Mind," as well as a 7-plus-minute medley by Sacred Hoop, DJ Marz, and Z-Man called "Not Our House," which I think can only be best described as Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack vibe. Those songs have 28.8K and 6.6K plays, respectively. And then for some killer turntablism, we've got a few tunes, including something from DJ Badrok called "1-800-Coming Correct," which has a little under 400 plays.
There's also a fat, buzzy bassline drum n bass remix by a guy named DJ Abstract of "Dukes Up," the original version of which is by someone who simply went by the name of W, that has a little over 6.5K plays (sorry about the super annoying part at the end of it 😕); and a couple tunes that show the versatility of a dude named Cole Marquis, whose solo indie folk tune, "48's," only has a little over 140 plays, and his much peppier, college/indie rock, keyboard-aided bop, "Dirt Bike Rider," by his band The Snowmen, has a little over 170 plays.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible.
Reminiscent Drive - "Two Sides To Every Story (Love From San Francisco Remix)" Globo - "Breakdown (mixed by Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto)" Daisy Glow - "Right On! (User Friendly mix)" Astralabe - "Guimbri Dub (Self-Cremating Fire of Passion Remix)" Rasco - "Cordless Mics" Cole Marquis - "48's" Double Life feat. Raw B - "Cycles of the Mind" Live Human - "Almost Live" Sacred Hoop feat. DJ Marz & Z-Man - "Not Our House" DJ Badrok - "1-800-Coming Correct" Apollo, Vinroc, Shortkut & Richness - "Live at Cue's" W - "Dukes Up (DJ Abstract's One A.M. mix)" Snowmen - "Dirt Bike Rider"
And here's a list of the compilations and mixes that were used to put this thing together:
Club H Vol. 2 by Harry the Bastard (2000, Statra Recordings) The Chemistry Set (1998, Hypnotic Records) The Vertical Iris (1998, ZoëMagik Records) Observation of Ruins (1998, Baraka Foundation) Cleaning House: A Devil in the Woods Compilation (1999, Devil in the Woods) Cue's Hip Hop Shop Volume One (1998, Dogday Records) Eclectic Electric (2000, eMusic)
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So you've got about 66 minutes of some pretty obscure 1998 San Francisco underground music here, the likes of which I don't think anyone else besides that hypothetical college kid that I made up before would ever put together 😁.
Going back to the 70s next week with an update to a genre playlist that I haven't touched in a *very* long time 👀.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

320: V/A // Tommy Boy's Greatest Beats Volume 1
Tumblr media
Tommy Boy's Greatest Beats Volume 1 Various Artists 1998, Tommy Boy
The Tommy Boy catalogue has been endlessly repackaged over the years, but if you’re looking to score some of the classics on wax you could do worse than this late ‘90s double LP compilation. Tommy Boy had commemorated its first 15 years with a 2xCD/4xLP box set of the label’s “Greatest Beats,” but for the more cost-conscious consumer also broke the vinyl set out into individual volumes. Volume 1 sadly (sadly!) does not include anything by Coolio or House of Pain, for which you would have to splash out for Volume 2, but what is here’s pretty good: both Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” and “Renegades of Funk” (the latter in its full 12” glory); the 12” mix of De La Soul’s debut “Plug Tunin’ (Are You Ready for This”); early electro gem “Play at Your Own Risk” by Planet Patrol (likewise in 12” format); Stetsasonic, Naughty by Nature, Digital Underground and more.
youtube
The selection admittedly feels a bit random without the accompanying Volume 2 (we get K7’s minor New Jack-dancehall hit “Move it Like This” rather than his smash “Come Baby Come” for example), and it’d be hard to argue fun but forgettable cuts like Choice MC’s instrumental b-side “Gordy’s Groove” or Bambaataa and James Brown collab “Unity” belong on a “hits” comp for a label of Tommy Boy’s magnitude. Not all of the actual hits are winners either—Club Nouveau’s Grammy-winning Kidz Bop version of Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” has aged like a Kidz Bop reunion tour. On balance though, the set does a good job of representing the label’s hip-hop, dance, electro, and R&B sides, delivering some of the most influential Black music of the past forty years, a heap of ‘80s and ‘90s nostalgia, and some sure-shot party fuel. Drop the needle and hit the floor.
