After six months on the Hemet City Council, Mayor Pro Tem Joe Males’ term may be coming to an end.

Riverside Superior Court Judge Craig Reimer issued a preliminary ruling Wednesday, April 28 declaring Males’ election “annulled.” He remains on the council for now.

Hemet resident Kenneth Graff had contested Males’ election, alleging that Males didn’t live in District 4 prior to being issued his paperwork to run for office, wasn’t a registered voter there and that the city had improperly extended the filing deadline for candidates to replace former council member Bonnie Wright. Wright resigned from the city council in July 2020 to move out of state.

In the written explanation of his proposed judgment, Reimer focused on the allegation that Males was not a resident of District 4, which he was elected to represent in November, when he pulled the paperwork to run for office July 20. Males didn’t sign the lease for a rental property on Hornbeam Court in District 4 until July 22 and didn’t get the keys to the property — where other people were still living — until after July 20.

“He may have formed the intent to move his place of habitation to a dwelling within the district in the future, and he may have actually moved his place of habitation within days thereafter, but he had no fixed habitation within the district on July 20,” Reimer’s written explanation reads, in part. “Nor was he inhabiting any other house, condominium, apartment, trailer, or even hotel room within the district on that date.”

Males said he was just going by what was written on the city’s Elections 2020 web page. The page doesn’t mention the residency requirements spelled out in the city’s municipal code, but just says candidates must be registered voters and to contact the city clerk’s office for more information.

“I went by what the website said,” Males said Tuesday, May 4.

“I had a verbal agreement with the landlords, but I had to wait until the people moved out, which they did shortly,” he said. “The intent was there for me to live there, but that’s what they got me on.”

A verbal agreement without an unsigned lease is not enough to establish residency, Reimer wrote. Instead, on July 20, Males’ only place of residence was in District 5, even if he intended to move to District 4 within days.

Reimer also rejected Males’ argument that he had relied on bad information from the city clerk’s office and the city web page.

“There is no evidence that Males relied upon anything that the city’s clerk told him in failing to establish residence in District 4 until after July 20,” Reimer wrote.

Both state government code and Hemet’s municipal code require candidates for legislative office to live in the district from which they were elected and be a registered voter when the nomination paperwork is issued.

Reimer’s bottom line: “The election by which Males assumed the office is annulled and set aside.”

A conference on Reimer’s proposed judgement is scheduled for May 27.

In the meantime, Graff’s attorney, Priscilla Madrid, thinks the city council needs Males to recuse himself from decisions at the council’s scheduled May 11 and May 25 meetings.

“I would think that the city needs to address that issue,��� she said. “I would not imagine they would be allowing him to weigh in on issues relating to the fourth district.”

If her name sounds familiar, it should: Madrid is the daughter of Miguel Madrid, the District 4 candidate who came in second behind Males in November. If Reimer stands by his decision, though, that doesn’t mean Miguel Madrid will be seated on the city council.

“There was no benefit to my father,” Priscilla Madrid said. “The only remedy is the annulment of the election. The second in line is not put into that seat — it’s just annulled.”

As of Wednesday, Males still appears on the city’s website, both in the list of city council members and on his own profile page, as the representative of District 4.

Mayor Karlee Meyer, a political ally of Males, doesn’t think the council needs to do anything until the May 27 conference. If he vacates the District 4 seat, the city council will need to decide whether to appoint a replacement or hold a special election. According to Meyer, a special election “could cost up to $100,000 for the city.”

Males blamed the attempt to oust him on groups that have historically had a “stranglehold” on the city, although he declined to name them.

“The ones that have been calling the shots in this city, they’re the ones behind this,” he said. The current city council “is moving, we’re getting things done. And they don’t like that.”

Meyer defended him Tuesday, blaming the inadequate information presented on the city’s website.

“Joe has proven to stand for change and is committed to the people of Hemet,” she said. She pointed to “the way he has led in the past four months, dealing with obvious issues that have been ignored for years.”

Males vowed to fight for his seat and to run for reelection if he’s removed from office.

“We have a Plan A, Plan B and a Plan C,” he said. “But I will be back as a council member.”

KCATA hires community liaison following report

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Transportation isn't something Susie Haake takes for granted.

Haake, a Kansas City, Missouri native, contracted polio when she was just 3 years-old and now uses a power wheelchair.

For the past 34 years, she has also relied on paratransit to get around.

"It means that I can live the life that I want to live," she said of the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority's service, RideKC Freedom.

 Earlier this year, 41 Action News investigated passenger complaints of long waits and unreliable rides.

"It shouldn't be a fight every day to make it work," Chris Montavon, one of the users, said at the time.

When we brought their complaints to the KCATA at the end of April, the agency promised to take action. Three months later, we requested the on-time performance numbers. They show a slight improvement, from 90 percent in April to 93 percent in July.

Montavon said his pick up and drop off times have become more consistent, and the agency has addressed safety concerns with vehicles.

There's another change passengers hope will help. 

That's where Susie Haake comes in.

After our investigation, the KCATA created a new position called a community liaison. In mid-June they hired Haake, a nonprofit advisor and disability advocate, who will gather feedback from users and hopefully find solutions. 

"We think gathering people in one room so they can learn from each other, share issues with each other and then solve the problems that we have," Haake said of her role.

The first step for Haake is listening at both the KCATA and at organizations like The Whole Person, where she recently sat down with a public policy specialist.

"Because she has a lot of knowledge and has people skills, I think it was a great idea to put her into this position, so that our consumers felt heard, and they're heard by another person with a disability," The Whole Person CEO Julie DeJean said.

Although Haake wants to address problems, she acknowledges 100 percent on-time performance may never happen.

"When you know you have humans involved and equipment involved, we're not going to quite get there every single time, and gosh that makes me unhappy that we can't do that, but I would much rather see it at 95, 96 percent. We are working towards those goals," she said. 

Montavon is hopeful Haake will push for change. 

"We want them to be successful. I want it to work," he said.

I have so much to say about my experience in Costa Rica (and I will), but for now I wanted to share images and info from the trip. Feel free to skip the text and just look at pix.

The main export of Costa Rica is bananas. Harvested when they are green for shipment to the US and other global destinations, they’re often referred to as Green Gold (Oro Verde).

After spending one night in San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital, we were picked up and driven by van to Tortuguero National Park–well, as far as we could be driven. The last part of the journey was by boat. Laguna Lodge Tortuguero is located on essentially a long island, accessible only by boat. (Though it’s more of a peninsula, the part that is attached by land is impassible.)

We drove past miles and miles of banana plantations. The bunches of bananas are wrapped up in colored bags to indicate either when they should be picked and where they’re going to be shipped.

Fun Fact: 70% of the world’s bananas are pollinated by bats.

Once we drove as far as we could, we ended up at this restaurant on the River Suerte where we would complete our journey to Tortuguero.

Our boat is the kind of in the middle with the orange seats (which were life preservers).

Come with me on the boat with our captain and our guide Clarence. (Who I called Terrance for 2 days.)

We arrived on Day 2 at the Laguna Lodge around noon. We’d traveled about four hours from San Jose via bus then boat. The scenery on the way was stunning. The two days there were rife with the sights and sounds of local wildlife.

The birds of paradise were everywhere.

We took all of our meals at this table, overlooking the Suerte River.

A raccoon visited us for every dinner. The good news: there is no rabies in Costa Rica.

The two iguanas lazed around the grounds.

The grounds of Laguna Lodge were lush and colorful.

This little guy dived into the pool to evade a bird then popped up by us when the coast was clear.

The red-eyed tree frog (after a very, very long hunt.)

We felt a little worn out after hunting so long for the frog. Obviously. (But it was worth it.)

We visited the village of Tortuguero. It was a small village that was once home to lumber mills from the 1940s through the 1970s. It’s only current industry is tourism. Though its only connection to the rest of Costa Rica, the Suerte River is home to deadly predators such as the bull shark, Cayman and other crocodiles which make it dangerous to play, swim or fish in.

But wait, there’s more!

The beach on the Caribbean side of the village is home to the spawning grounds for the Caribbean’s Green Turtle. Once the spawning season begins (mid-June through mid-August), it brings jaguars from up in the mountains hundreds of miles away. They trek through the jungle, swim across the Suerte, walk through the village to the beach on the other side of the island to feed. As a result, the town closes up at 8 p.m. Doors are closed and windows are shut. Children are brought inside. We saw warning signs about what to do if we see a jaguar in the river. (Hint: avoid it, because they can still jump from a full swim into your freakin’ boat.)

A huge highlight of the trip was zip lining in the Arenal Volcano Region where we went after leaving our own private “Amazon” at Tortuguero. It was my first time, but as soon as we decided on Costa Rica for a destination, I knew it was something I wanted to do.

And it’s something I will definitely do again.

Nervous and excited watching them tell us how not to die.

I literally couldn’t stop smiling.

Just hanging around. At 50 mph.

Salmon is not a fish that is native to Italian waters and something I had never seen until more recently when in Italy, mostly in upscale restaurants.  The rich, fatty nature of salmon pairs perfectly with so many indigenous Italian herbs, produce and products.  A grilled salmon steak with a drizzle of Balsamico; a freshly chopped tomato, garlic and herb topping;  or perhaps simply set on a bed of wood roasted cannellini beans with a touch of  Extra Virgin Olive Oil… Oh the possibilities are endless.

I simply had to share one of my favorite preparations which features salmon from the A16 Cookbook. The technique for oven braising the fish is absolutely foolproof with any thick fish steak.  The original recipe features halibut, which I might add is wonderful.  I substituted the halibut for salmon since wild salmon is one of my family’s favorites and available from local Northern California waters.  The area farmer’s markets have the freshest catch of the day and often remove the pin bones for you.  I generally buy a large segment from the center of the salmon making it easier to divide into equal serving pieces.

The A 16 topping takes the salmon to another level of perfection, pistachio being the the key ingredient. Pistachio, lemon, parsley, capers – what could be more representative of the flavors of Sicily.

Pistachio trees were originally brought to Sicily from the Middle East by the Arabs when they conquered the area.  The village of Bronte, on the western slope of Mt. Etna, is recognized as producing some of the finest pistachios in the world.  The distinctive flavor of the pistachios, combined with preserved lemon, parsley leaves and capers comes together with extra virgin olive oil to create an intensely aromatic paste perfectly complimenting the salmon.

1.8 pound piece of wild Salmon, cut from the center portion of the fish

Olive oil for coating the baking dish

1 cup of shelled, unsalted pistachio nuts, lightly roasted

1/4 to 1/3 cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

1 1/2 tablespoons of capers, drained or rinsed of salt

3 wedges of [url href=”http://labellasorella.com/2014/10/preserved-lemons/&#8221; title=”Preserved Lemons”]preserved lemons[/url], cut into 3/4 inch pieces – be sure to remove any seeds

Leaves from 1/2 bunch of Italian parsley

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Fresh water

Extra Virgin Olive Oil to drizzle

Instructions

Early in the day place the fish on a cutting board, select a sharp chefs knife and cut the fish into 4 relatively equal portions and refrigerate.

Place the pistachios, capers, parsley leaves and preserved lemon pieces in the work bowl of a food processor, pulse until the mixture becomes a coarse paste. This step can also be done by hand with a mortar and pestle. With the food processor running, begin to drizzle the Extra Virgin Olive Oil into the work bowl, stopping once to scrap down the sides. If you are doing this by hand, do so once you have crushed the ingredients coarsely. You many not need the entire 1/3 cup of olive oil; the mixture should hold together well and the oil be fully incorporated. Cover with plastic wrap, placed directly on top of the paste, set aside.

Have a pyrex or other rectangular baking dish ready and oil with a light coating of olive oil. Between 4 hours and 1 hour prior to serving, season the salmon pieces with the salt and lay them skin side down in the baking pan. Return to the refrigerator. Thirty minutes before placing the fish into the oven, remove it from the refrigerator allow it to come close to room temperature; the resting time may vary depending on the time of year and temperature. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Preheat the oven to 400º F.

Top the fish pieces equally with the pistachio paste. Add enough fresh water to the baking dish to come halfway up the sides of the salmon.

Place the baking pan into the preheated oven and allow the fish to braise in the water for 12 to 15 minutes; The fish will be perfectly cooked, not at all dry. Remove the fish pieces to either a platter or individual serving plates. Baste each piece with some of the warm liquid from the baking pan followed by a drizzle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Serve immediately.

2017 Craobh Eo Woodturning Seminar

The 2017 Craobh Eo woodturning seminar was held last Saturday 25th February in the Gateway Hotel in Swinford. Once again the seminar was an outstanding success. There was a huge number of turners in attendance for the day. Many more called in at different times during the day. It was great to meet and chat to so many very talented crafts  people, of all ages! It was great to pick up so many tips and tricks too, some of the tricks I learned on the day I thought, “why the heck didn’t I think of that!”

There were 3 woodturning demonstrators at the seminar, David O’Neill (Ulster Chapter), Joe O’Neill (Dublin Chapter) and Ciaran Mc Carty (South East Chapter). There were two lathes set up in two separate rooms with simultaneous demonstrations in each. David O’Neill was first in room 1 demonstrating how to turn a “square winged bowl”.

David O’Neill was first in room 1 first, demonstrating how to turn a “square winged bowl”. Turning a square winged bowl is a little tricky. It can also be a little “hairy” with 4 corners spinning at high speed! The turning process involves some reverse chucking of the piece on the lathe. David finished the piece with a sprayed paint finish and a finish spray coat of lacquer.

In room 2 Ciaran Mc Carthy started off demonstrating how to turn a traditional three legged stool. Before beginning the demonstration, Ciaran went into great detail on the history and the origins of the 3 legged shaker stool. Ciaran began by turning the seat of the stool. When turned and shaped to dimension, he took the piece off the lathe and brought it to the pillar drill and drilled 3 holes on the underside to receive the 3 legs. These were drilled off square to the seat, but at what degree I’m not sure (I was going between both rooms at that stage to get some photos!). Ciaran turned the thee legs and stretchers and competed the stool in the second session. The timer used was ash and was finished off the chisel, there was no sanding as it would be too dusty. The stool was quite heavy and very comfortable to sit on too!

Joe O’Neill from the Dublin chapter took to the lathe for the second session in room 1. Joe demonstrated how to turn a picture frame in oak. Joe is a real “character” and a brilliant storyteller! Joe had the room in fits of laughter more than once. This demonstration was lively, in more ways than one!! (see video below). After gluing the work piece onto a scraficial piece of timer on a screw chuck, Joe began shaping the picture frame. All of a sudden there was quite a spectacular *blow out*. When nearly completed, just as Joe was parting the piece off, the parting chisel had a “catch” on the work piece which resulted in it shattering. It certainly livened things up!

In the final session in room 1, David O’Neill turned a lidded box in Paduak with a finial made out of Ebony. I was very interested in this demonstration as I’ve never turned Ebony or Paduak myself. These exotic woods are a bit expensive to buy and are a little difficult to come by. David explained that using a bit of colour too on the piece makes it stand out from the rest. David did some embellishing on the outside of the box with a drimmel tool and then sprayed it with black paint. The excess was then turned back to the bare wood again. After turning the lid and finial, he then spray lacquered the entire piece.

All in this was a very entertaining and very informative seminar on woodturning. It is great to see so much interest in woodturning as well. All of the competition pieces on show were excellent. As always, the food in the hotel was top notch, and staff as always very helpful. Looking forward to next years seminar already!
