2020 is the 15th anniversary of the BAFTA having the Rising Star Award which is voted for by the public. Starting in 2006 known as the Orange Rising Star Award and then since 2013 the EE Rising Star Award, this is due to sponsorship and pretty much helps the award with publicity and getting the public involved in the voting for the winner.
SELFIE BOOTH trying out the “Selfie Booth” during dinner at Grosvenor House Hotel after the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 16 February 2014.
Over the years as I have become more and more obsessed with films I know more about the nominees which in all honesty makes me feel very special and at times very geeky. Which I personally love and am very proud of, I felt coming up to the 15th year it was very important to take a look back at not only the winners from each year but the other nominees as well. The list is very impressive and it feels as though someone at BAFTA can certainly pick out rising stars in the best possible way, the nominees are chosen regardless of gender, nationality and whether they have made a breakthrough in television, film or both.
I guess at times the outcome could be influenced by the fan base which that actor has and if they are in a franchise they will probably be more known than others. But the important thing I want to look at here is the high level of not only winners but nominees and looking at where so many of them are now, so even being picked as the five can certainly be seen as a massive positive.

Now you have had a lovely recap on not only the winners each year but the nominees as well it really is great to see that whoever BAFTA have working on this award they really do find the breakouts very early on. The prime example of this is Florence Pugh, her breakout role was Lady Macbeth yet for some reason not many people seem to have seen that film or remember it so saying 2019 was her breakout year which is very wrong in my opinion! So going forward pay close attention to this award and it will help highlight some very talented young performers that you can find current film or tv work and then also looking out for them in the future as well.
My love for film is huge and I love an award which appreciates fans views as well, as I mentioned earlier if the breakout is in a franchise it really could help with winning the vote. The nominees are all very impressive and some years it is now amazing to see how far some of these amazingly talented actors have come, the big majority still putting in great performances to this day in film, tv and even on stage as well.
I guess as well as looking at the history of this award it is also a small way of saying thank you to Orange and now EE for sponsoring this award for BAFTA. For this years nominees only Kelvin Harrison Jr and Micheal Ward are the two that I have not seen very many things for, so I am happy with the other three being rather well known to myself. I see that as reward for watching a love of film/tv. It does also make me want to catch up with the current work for those two though.
Do you pay much attention to this award? If not, I really would recommend that going forward you see the amazing talented young actors that will be looking to push forward in the next few years and have promising careers. It is certainly something I have been paying a lot more attention to in the past couple of years.

Early life and education
Erivo was born to Nigerian parents in Stockwell, South London. She attended La Retraite R.C Girls School. Erivo began a music psychology degree at the University of East London, however a year into her degree, she applied and subsequently trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

In 2013, Erivo played the role of Celie Harris in the Menier Chocolate Factory production of The Color Purple. Erivo had previously portrayed Sister Mary Clarence/Deloris Van Cartier in the UK tour of the musical stage version of Sister Act which Goldberg also originated in its film adaptation.
Erivo originated the role of Chenice in the West End musical I Can't Sing! The X Factor Musical, which opened on 26 March 2014, at the London Palladium. The production closed on 10 May, just six weeks and three days since its official opening night.
She is also featured as a recording artist, co-writing and performing "Fly Before You Fall" on the soundtrack to the American musical drama Beyond the Lights.
She made her Broadway debut in the 2015 Broadway revival transfer of the Menier Chocolate Factory production of The Color Purple, reprising her role as Celie Harris alongside American actresses Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avery and Danielle Brooks as Sofia. The production began performances at Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, from 10 December 2015. Among other awards for her performance, Erivo won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Erivo starred as Cathy alongside Joshua Henry in a one-night benefit concert performance of Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Yearson September 12, 2016. Proceeds from the performance went to the Brady Center, a national gun violence organization.
In November 2016, it was announced that Erivo was going to be starring in Steve McQueen's Widows, alongside André Holland and Viola Davis. In February 2017, it was reported that Erivo will be portraying the title role in Harriet, a biographical film about American abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
In February 2017, Erivo performed "God Only Knows" as a tribute to musicians who had passed away over the past year alongside John Legend at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
In March 2017, Erivo and the cast of The Color Purple were nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for their performance on NBC's The Today Show in May 2016. In April 2017, it was announced that Erivo and the cast of The Color Purple alongside The Today Show won the Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Award in the Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program category. This marks the first time a Broadway musical has both been nominated for and won an award in this category.

La Times: The 'Make America Great Again' dress and other looks that turned heads at the Grammys
This year’s Grammy Awards red carpet could have rivaled the star power of New York Fashion Week, delivering the ultimate sartorial showdown and displaying some of the biggest awards show fashion moments in years.
Except it didn’t. Several fashionable celebrities skipped the red carpet or had jetted off to London for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. And in the expected fashion showdown between Beyoncé and Adele, a pregnant Beyoncé bypassed the photo gantlet, leaving a fresh-faced Adele the red carpet winner.

The British songstress and Grammy winner didn’t disappoint, outfitted in a green long-sleeved floor-length Givenchy Couture gown.
She wasn’t alone in looking good for the red carpet. Other standouts included Paris Jackson (in a multi-colored Balmain look), Nick Jonas (in blingy, studded Balmain jacket) and Jason Derulo (looking dapper in a tuxedo, vest and overcoat with fur trim), plus Carrie Underwood wearing a red long-sleeved Elie Madi gown with a diamond cutout.
“I usually don’t do red, but I was feeling it,” Underwood said.
For every Adele, Heidi Klum (in a short, metallic Philipp Plein minidress), Kat Graham (in a trio-striped asymmetrical dress) or Mýa (in a red pantsuit with a pussycat-bow blouse), there was a parade of cotton-candy looks, ranging from lime green-haired men (Mike Posner and Blackbear) to singer Girl Crush in what appeared to be a dress straight out of the board game Candy Land.
Then there was the downright strange (Cee Lo Green, looking like a statue, in a head-to-toe gold outfit, including what appeared to be a mask, as his alter ego Gnarly Davidson).

And in these days of Donald Trump, of course there was a political statement, but not quite the type seen at fashion week in New York.

Wearing the equivalent of a cartoonish slogan T-shirt, singer Joy Villa got political at the Grammys with a Trump-inspired red-white-and-blue gown featuring the president’s campaign slogan, “Make American great again.” On the train of the dress was the word “Trump” — in all-caps.
Laverne Cox during the arrivals at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. (Marcus Yam / Los Angeles Times)
Making a different kind of bold statement, Laverne Cox wore a skin-baring one-shoulder leather gown by L.A. designer Bryan Hearns.
Jennifer Lopez goes for a pretty-in-pink look during the arrivals at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. (Marcus Yam / Los Angeles Times)
In the mix of looks, there were strong showings of pinks, dusty roses and lavenders, including Jennifer Lopez, who’s usually red carpet gold, looking more like a fancy bridesmaid at a Midwest wedding in a cleavage-baring Ralph & Russo frock than her glamorous self.
Grammy host James Corden also wore pale pink. His Tom Ford two-button Windsor dinner jacket had peak grosgrain lapels. And then there was Katy Perry, in her futuristic-meets-glam Champagne-colored Tom Ford embroidered mock neck tunic with a feather-embroidered tube skirt
Lady Gaga during the arrivals at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. (Marcus Yam / Los Angeles Times)
Just before the show began, a last-minute standout arrival stepped onto the red carpet.
Lady Gaga, who came to the Grammys to rock out with Metallica, turned heads in a nearly there look that appeared to have come from the wardrobe of “Fifty Shades Darker.”
The singer donned fishnet stockings, thigh-high platform boots, hot pants and a crop top. The look might have been her ultimate response to body shamers who questioned her Super Bowl outfits earlier this month.
