Gotye featuring Kimbra - Somebody That I Used to Know 2011
"Somebody That I Used to Know" is a song written, produced and performed by Australian musician and singer Gotye, featuring vocals from New Zealand singer Kimbra. The song samples Luiz Bonfá's 1967 instrumental song "Seville", with additional instrumentations of beats and a xylophone playing a melody based on "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep". The song was released in Australia and New Zealand on 5 July 2011 as the second single from Gotye's third studio album, Making Mirrors (2011). It was released in December 2011 in the UK, and 20 January 2012 in Ireland and the US.
In Australia, the song won the Triple J Hottest 100 poll at the end of 2011, as well as ARIA Music Awards for Song of the Year and Best Video, while Kimbra was voted Best Female Artist, and Gotye was named Best Male Artist and Producer of the Year. The song came ninth in the Triple J Hottest 100 of the Past 20 Years, 2013. At the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, "Somebody That I Used to Know" won two Grammys for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record of the Year.
Commercially, "Somebody That I Used to Know" was a global success and became both artists' signature song. It reached the top of the charts in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US, as well as 25 other official charts, and reached the Top 10 in more than 30 countries. Globally, "Somebody That I Used to Know" has sold more than 20 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling digital singles of all time. Gotye paid tribute to the overwhelming number of cover versions of the song by personally creating a video remix, released in August 2012, using segments from hundreds of online covers to create a new, unique version of the track, titled "Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra".
"Somebody That I Used to Know" received a total of 87,6% yes votes!

Usher double up at NAACP Image Awards
Tumblr media
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - It’s been quite a year for Usher. The eight-time GRAMMY award winner headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show as the main performer.  Usher’s performance in February at the intermission of the Kansas City Chiefs-San Francisco 49ers football game came on the heels of a Las Vegas residency in which the “Nice and Slow” singer performed for a year.

Usher comes backstage at the 55th Image Awards on March 16, 2024. Usher won two awards on the night, capturing the President's Award and Entertainer of the Year honors. Photo credit: Mark Hammond/News4usonline Usher can now add some NAACP Image Awards hardware to his trophy case. On a night celebrating Black excellence in the arts and entertainment, the “U Got It Bad” and “Burn” crooner was on the receiving end of the President’s Award at the 55th NAACP Image Awards.  Adding to the chapter, the 23-time GRAMMY nominee was also named Entertainer of the Year, the final category of the night. The award proved to be a boon for the NAACP Image Awards show. Usher walked the carpet and appeared backstage in the media room to take photos. The recognition of Usher has been a long time coming. After he was selected to be the honoree of the President’s Award, Usher, an 18-time Billboard Award winner, gave credit where was due, paying homage to his mother.  “I’m very honored to be able to receive this amazing from the depths of my soul,” Usher said. “My passion/work is what has mattered for me the moment my mother made me understand what purpose lies with the opportunity to be able to speak to the entire world.” “I recognize her more than anybody,” Usher remarked. “...I wanted to make it known far too often in our industry women do not get the recognition they truly deserve. And when we first started, it was even harder for a mother to believe in the dreams that I had, because I was unwavering…being raided without a father in our home. Being raised from a single parent it was a lot. But she was more defiant.”  Read the full article

Gotye and how he became "Somebody That We Used To Know"
We all remember how massive Gotye’s 2011 smash hit “Somebody That I Used To Know” really was, racking up 50 million views in six months, and over two billion as of today, spending a whopping 59 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, the tenth longest running song on the chart, as well as topping charts in 26 countries, and winning two gramophones at the 55th Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, plus countless appearances in several publications’ best releases of 2011.
But what happened to the singer-songwriter after this record made its waves? In case you didn’t know, he went on to release music as Gotye for three years, up until 2014 when he released a statement confirming that he would not be releasing anything under the alias, further explaining that he’s never been interested in the success, rather the creative process is what matters to him.
Gotye, born Wouter André "Wally" De Backer actually began his music career much earlier than 2011, in fact, he didn’t start out as Gotye at all, he formed a band called “The Basics” in 2002, which was originally a duo, but ended up as a trio in 2004, when the current lineup was finalized. The Basics released a great number of songs, up until they announced their hiatus in 2010, which led to Gotye following his solo venture, and the rest is history… until 2013 rolled around, and the band resumed their activities, dropping 7 studio albums, 1 EP and 4 singles. So, even though Gotye became that somebody we used to know, Wally is still pursuing his passion, which is creating beautiful music according to what he believes in, creative process wise.
