Now, as I hop on over to the Google Sheet and update it with the winners, have some highlights and announcements…

Some Highlights from the Results:

For most votes, the poll that takes first place is Shockwave vs. Sentinel Prime with 965 votes total. Prowl vs. Slug is in second with 960 votes.

The poll with the least votes was Guzzle vs. Runamuck with 467 votes.

The matches with the greatest gap between opponents were Shockwave vs. Sentinel Prime and Jazz vs. Sludge. The final ratio for both was 96/4. 👀

The closest matches were Wing vs. Mixmaster (52/48) and Meteorfire vs. Hubcap (53/47).

Also, it’s safe to say that IDW 1 Prowl is the most hated character in this competition. 💀 The only reason he has survived is because of TFA and G1 Prowl.

“In Charlotte Brontë, everything is in terms of wind: things, people, faces, loves, words.”

“How does wind function in Jane Eyre? David Lodge’s discussion of fire in the novel has become a classic essay in literary criticism. Wind may not seem to come with the semantic thickness critics tend to fall for (the novel’s many domestic fires, the arson attempt, the inferno that demolishes Thornfield Hall, the burning love) but it nevertheless plays an active part in the novel, propelling the ‘airy’ protagonist through the story. When, at the very beginning of the novel, Jane is locked in the red room her courage fails when darkness falls and she finds herself alone, listening to ‘the rain still beating continuously on the staircase window, and the wind howling in the grove behind the wall’ (JE, p. 23). Regaining consciousness after panicking, she wakes to the sound of voices ‘as if muffled by a rush of wind or water’ (JE, p. 25). Her arrival at Lowood takes place in windy circumstances: the coach comes to a standstill and what Jane notices is how ‘[r]ain, wind, and darkness filled the air’ (JE, p. 52). After her public humiliation by Mr Brocklehurst, Jane finds solace with Helen and it is the wind, dispelling the clouds, that enables the moon to shed light on the girls’ embrace and on the approaching Miss Temple (JE, p. 82). When Jane grows restless after eight years of Lowood — Miss Temple marries and ‘take[s] with her the serene atmosphere [Jane] had been breathing in her vicinity’ — she ‘feel[s] the stirring of old emotions’ and expresses her desire to be free. It is her desire for liberty, uttered as a prayer ‘scattered on the wind then faintly blowing’, that leads her to take up the position of governess at Thornfield Hall (JE, p. 99). Her first meeting with Mr Rochester, when she helps him back on his horse on the way from Thornfield to Hay, is a swift encounter and Brontë uses lines from Thomas Moore to sketch the disappearance of man, horse and dog: ‘Like heath that in the wilderness / The wild wind whirls away’ (JE, p. 132). The scene in which Mr Rochester summons Jane as his wife is initiated by a ‘waft of wind [. . .] sweeping down the laurel-walk’ and wandering away to an indefinite distance (JE, p. 285), and Jane’s acceptance is followed by a thunderstorm, announced by a roaring of wind (JE, p. 287). On the evening before the wedding Jane longs to share the disturbing event of the preceding night (Bertha Mason’s visit to Jane’s room) with Mr Rochester, who is away. She runs outside to ‘feel [the wind]’ and finds ‘a certain wild pleasure’ in ‘[running] before the wind delivering my trouble of mind to the measureless air-torrent thundering through space’ (JE, p. 309). Once the secret of Mr Rochester’s marriage to Bertha Mason is out and he tells the story of his youth we learn that it is ‘a wind fresh from Europe’ that had freed him from his hellish life on Jamaica and had heralded the voice of Hope that called him back to England (JE, p. 347). Jane’s consecutive departure from Thornfield leaves her penniless and victim to the elements. It is again a ‘wild night’ with fast-falling rain and wind sweeping over the hill that drives her to the cottage of the Rivers siblings. And when she finally leaves that place, and St John Rivers, she does so in response to a cosmic calling of her name that she recognizes as Mr Rochester’s. To her calling ‘Where are you?’ only the wind responds — ‘The wind sighed low in the firs: all was moorland loneliness and midnight hush’ (JE, p. 467). It is the wind, nevertheless, that had carried her words to Mr Rochester for he had heard her response: ‘As I exclaimed “Jane! Jane! Jane!” a voice — I cannot tell whence the voice came, but I know whose voice it was — replied, “I am coming: wait for me”; and a moment after, went whispering on the wind, the words — “Where are you?”’ (JE, p. 496).  Like the dreams and presentiments Beer highlights as narrative solutions to the problem of omniscient narration, Brontë uses wind as a narrative device. It acts as a propelling force in the novel; it accompanies Jane on her journey and links the different elements of her story together. If we focus on the wind rather than on Jane’s inner voice, we see in which way Jane Eyre is not ‘a regular autobiography’ (JE, p. 97). The decisions Jane makes are not to be situated only on life’s plane of organization — conscious, rational decisions and their more hidden, unconscious motors — but also on what Deleuze calls the plane of consistence. Brontë shows that the life of Jane Eyre, whose very name echoes ‘air’ or ‘wind’, unfolds by affect and intensities that are not someone’s or something’s but free-flowing — of the wind.”

The Ouma Kokichis

Cookie is a relatively canon-compliant post-death Ouma from a universe where the killing game was not a simulation and this is his afterlife. He is the head of a new faction of DICE he founded here after his death. He suffers from a lot of chronic pain, fatigue, breathing and eating issues, and is relatively bedridden due to his death. His lies often follow various "shticks" that call back to the lying habits of the members of his old DICE. At it's core though, he bases his lies on the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" method, where he leans so heavily into the fact he is a liar, that he makes even his truths sound like lies to hide them in plain sight. He is a regressor whose regression is primarily triggered by stress and traumatic triggers. His age ranges from 3-6 years old and his favorite things are milk, Mimi, and DICE in that order. (But that's a lie.)

Notable canon divergences: He struggled with his regression heavily throughout the killing game, acting overly childish on purpose to hide it as being deliberately annoying. DICE existed pregame, and one of his subordinates died in season 52. His joining season 53 was a deliberate choice to avenge her and bring Team Dangan down. His plan to trick Monokuma in Chapter 5 actually worked, resulting in Momota avoiding execution and the class being released early without the need for a sixth trial or Saihara ever seeing his room or Amami's lab.

Kichi*

14 • Pre-death Ask Box: OPEN

Kichi is possibly(?) from a time loop AU with a current tally of 162 and a heavily canon-divergent pregame. He came from seconds before the press touched him, and has been struggling with the dilemma of going back to finish the job for years. He's not entirely sure whether this time he'll actually die or if the whole loop will start over again, and it's unclear whether he actually remembers the loops or if he just made up the entire time loop story as a lie to begin with. He claims he only knows what number they're on because of tallies he finds carved into the underside of his bed frame. He is a member of Cookie's DICE, and often steps in as "Substitute Ultimate Supreme Leader" when Cookie needs a break. His lies often come in the form of games of pretend and entertaining alternate realities to escape his trauma. The killing game seems to have tainted his view of lies to the point of an identity crisis as he struggles with delusions and compulsively telling the truth. He is a regressor whose regression is primarily triggered by stress and trauma, but he rarely allows himself the time to properly regress as he takes on a lot of responsibility helping other Kokichis as the muse who's been here the longest. His age ranges from 3-6 years old and his favorite things are Taro-kun, his twin brother, and his adoptive dads. He hates hospitals, but that's a lie.

Notable canon divergences: Time loop. DICE did not exist pregame. He was a charge at some sort of hospital-like facility before being put on Danganronpa.

Loopy

14 • Midgame Ask Box: OPEN

Loopy is also from a time loop AU with a current tally of 82. He came from the beginning of his current loop, right after Amami told him about the time loop's existence. He doesn't remember anything from past loops, but has residual anxieties and triggers from past deaths that he has no context to beyond what Amami, the prime looper, has told him. He's a lot softer than most other Oumas, likely due to the fact he doesn't remember much about the traumas he's faced in the killing game. Because of that, his approach to problems is a lot kinder and more optimistic.

Joker

14 • Midgame Ask Box: OPEN

Joker is another time looper, but this time with a whopping 467 loops under his belt. After being trapped for so long, he's become quite jaded and doesn't seem to care about much besides his Amami. Both he and his Amami are prime loopers and remember everything, but he kept this a secret from his Amami until he was outed here. That's a lie, he's not a prime looper at all! He gets caught up in overthinking things, with spiraling thoughts often left unchecked. His compulsive lying has become so pervasive to survive in the killing game that telling the truth too much makes him physically ill.

Notable canon divergences: Time loop. The Tragedy really happened, and THH and SDR2 were real, and Hope's Peak has been reestablished by Naegi. The show was made post-reconstruction, and the killing games there are simulations. DICE existed pregame, and one of his subordinates joined in season 52 because the group was short on cash. His joining season 53 was a deliberate choice to avenge her mistreatment and bring Team Dangan down while also exhibiting his Talent in hopes of getting scouted by the real Hope's Peak.

Koko

Koko is another relatively canon-compliant Ouma, like Cookie, but taken seconds before death. He was close enough, however, that he's suffering from the lingering effects of the poison and as such is bed-bound and struggles to breathe a lot of the time. He's contemplating the merits of going back to just get it over with. He is a regressor, but unlike the other regressors so far, he is permaregressed (which means he is regressed all the time), due to the traumatic nature of his plan in Chapter 5 triggering his regression before he got here. His age ranges around 3 or 4 years old and he is extremely clingy with his Momota.

Bindle

14 • Midgame Ask Box: OPEN

Bindle is an early-game Kokichi who stumbled across his Amami moments after Shirogane struck him with the shotput ball and watched him die in his arms. He didn't see Shirogane himself, but found out it was her after he was pulled here along with Amami. He plans to go back to end the killing game with this knowledge and commit suicide in the process so that he can stay here with his Amami. He is a regressor, and seems to be permaregressed like Koko after the traumatic event of watching Amami, who he was very close with, die. His age ranges around 6 or 7, sometimes as high as 9.

Notable canon divergences: DICE did not exist pregame, but he seems to claim they are around anyway, possibly as alters or something similar. It's also come to light that his pregame may have been similar to Kichi's with him in some kind of institution before being put on Danganronpa.

Petty

Petty is from yet another time loop AU, with a tally of 97 loops. Like Joker, he and his Amami both are prime loopers and remember every loop. He had originally been keeping this a secret from Amami, but was found out in his current loop after a situation where Amami befriended and told Maki about the loops, only for him to die and the run to keep going while Petty was still alive, proving that there were in fact two prime loopers. He gets bored extremely easily and is a lot more brazen with the crocodile tears. He often makes morbid jokes about having cannibalized his Amami (a lie).

Cusp is a relatively canon-compliant Ouma like Cookie, however he had a major relationship with Amami before the killing game, proven by the fact they seem to have swapped right canines at some point in the past. Due to the memory wipe, neither of them remember this, but desperately want to. He is from an AU of a fic my partner wrote but hasn't posted yet. As a DOA, he suffers much the same symptoms as Cookie, with chronic pain, fatigue, and organ difficulties, but much more severe as his arrival is more recent. He is a regressor whose regression is triggered primarily by stress, and thus had been regressed for a while since his arrival. Nowadays he's been fighting it in favor of being there for his Amami. His age ranges around 4 or 5 and he's very sleepy and whiny.

Notable canon divergences: DICE existed pregame, and he and Amami knew each other and were close enough to make a pact by switching teeth when they were younger.

Ender is a heavily canon-divergent Ouma on the verge of death in Chapter 1 after being struck with the shot put ball in the library by his Amami, who was coerced into being the mastermind in their universe. He's not quite dead yet, but he and his Amami are staying here for the time being to get their bearings and figure out next steps. Like Koko, he's close enough to death that he's suffering from the residual traumatic brain injury, resulting in chronic fatigue and head fog on the rare occasions that he's conscious, as well as seizures.

Notable canon divergences: Amami is the mastermind in his universe, possibly coerced into the position by Team Danganronpa after surviving season 52. Ender was getting a bit too inconvenient for the writing team, and demanded Amami lure him to the library and make him the first death to get him out of the way.

Gemini is a relatively canon-compliant Ouma who became very close to his Momota over the course of their time spent in the exisal hangar during Chapter 5. He promised Momota that by the time they met again in Hell, he'd have already taken over. Unfortunately, like Cookie and Cusp, he suffers the same post-death trauma, and wasn't able to do much to act on that promise before his Momota got here. He is a regressor who seems to regress to squarely 3 years old, though he tends to shy away from openly regressing. To keep himself from slipping, he tends to distract himself with excessive sexual promiscuity and other Grown Up things.

Notable canon divergences: It was discovered that his DICE actually consisted of the entire V3 class, with his Momota as the second in command. They were a secret organization working to compete against the Future Foundation's wrongful monopoly on Tragedy reconstruction. They were eventually discovered by Future Foundation and captured, their memories tampered with, and placed in the killing game. Gemini was the only one who knew their true history, but could not disclose it due to an enforced compulsion to lie. It is unclear if in his universe, Team Danganronpa was a part of the Future Foundation or another entity that they were cooperating with.

Androxys' 2023 Comics Wrapped

Happy end of 2023! To celebrate the turning of the year, I wanted to take a quick view back through the comics I read over the last twelve months. Turns out there's... a lot of them.

This isn't 100% perfect, mainly because I'm basing this off the metadata of when comics were added to my computer... I do think there are some comics I added at the end of 2022 but ended up reading in 2023. However, in the interest of being fair, this list won't count those, and is instead only the comics I can confirm I read in 2023.

By my tally, I read 977 comics in 2023 across 78 unique titles. If we assume each comic is 22 pages long, that's 21,494 pages of comics! Of course, some stories are shorter than 22 pages (as if they're splitting with a backup) and some are longer (prestige formats or one-shots). Based on some quick (and quite unscientific) math, I estimate that I spent around four days of my 2023 in the world of DC Comics. And you know what, I'll do it again.

I also think it’s interesting that basically every one of the most obvious instances of this that I can think of come from dsmp’s concerningly long list of amnesiacs.

Right, so there was something I noticed in Sam’s lore stream that I haven’t seen anyone talk about yet, specifically in relation to one of the journal entries.

Now, the only screenshots I’ve been able to get are really low quality, so I’m just gonna copy the text here.

“Journal Entry N100

The vines are running out of room to grow in the ravine. I’m digging tunnels to help them expand further. The first one will be under his house… I’m hearing the egg talk to me wherever I go now…”

The line about the first tunnel being under “his” house is what really stuck out to me, partially because of the I M P L I C A T I O N S.

We only really know of two people, as of current lore, anyway, whose house Sam Bucket could likely be referring to in this line: Bad and Sir Billiam, as they’re the only two who have really had the egg near/on their property.

This means that either a) Sam Bucket was around at the time of The Masquerade, meaning he’s probably immortal in some capacity, or at least really long lived, b) Sam Bucket was the one who put the egg under Bad and Skeppy’s house, kicking off the entirety of the eggpire arc, or c) some combination of the two.

Theory a is supported by the fact that very few people seem to know who Sam Bucket is, despite him mentioning having friends on the server. This could, however, be explained by the extremely high amount of amnesia on the server, especially since the Egg has referenced encountering Foolish before, which Foolish didn’t seem to remember.

Theory b is supported mainly by the amount of clear pictures of Bad and other references to him in the hideout, while there don’t seem to be any pictures of or references to any tftsmp characters whatsoever.

Either way, Sam Bucket has, in canon, been involved in the Egg’s history far longer than we’ve known that he, or even the Egg itself, existed. And it seems like finding out more about Sam Bucket could be the key to finding out more about the Egg.

My #1 post of 2022

So, due to a number of reasons, I’ve been writing about characters who use neopronouns and/or more than one set of pronouns a lot more in the past year than I ever have before. And at some point, I noticed that I started thinking less about them as simply a necessity to accurately portray a character’s identity, or something that I did just because “why not?” or because it’s something that’s important to normalize, but as something I could use as a tool in the way I told stories.

Let me explain. Take a moment to just imagine the possibilities playing around with pronouns could give you. Here are some ideas (Admittedly, I only really write in English, so I don’t really know how well any of these ideas would work with languages with different pronoun systems, but I’m sure their are similar things you could do):

Imagine a character that uses multiple pronouns, and, say, the narrator trades off every scene or so (just to avoid confusion; other characters switch pronouns midsentance while referring to the character), but in some circumstances the narrator refers to someone who otherwise appears to be that character by only one of the pronouns that that character uses, which initially appears to be a part of the normal switching between pronouns thing, but is actually foreshadowing to like, a secret twin, or a shapeshifter, or any other of a wide variety of plot twists. (Ex: character who uses multiple pronouns getting weird dreams in which the narrator never refers to them by name and only uses he/him pronouns foreshadowing the fact that the dreams are actually their past self’s memories, since their past self only used he/him pronouns).

Neopronouns used to make language more clear. If every character goes by different pronouns, there’s no ambiguity, right?

On the flip side, characters using similar pronouns in some scenes to make them harder to tell apart in certain circumstances, or else to draw parallels between different characters in certain scenes. Messing with different pronouns gives you better control over ambiguity or lack thereof, even when referring to well-established characters.

Having a character with multiple pronouns makes writing dialogue like 10x easier. Y’know that issue where you have a scene with two characters who use the same pronouns talking and you have to either repeat their names a bunch or find other ways to refer to them? Well, if one of those characters switches pronouns, and you have a scene where they’re interacting with a character who uses he/him pronouns, you can have them use she/her pronouns or neopronouns, if they’re interacting with a character that used she/her pronouns you can use he/him or neopronouns and boom, problem solved!

If you’re writing fantasy or sci-fi, imagine world building a culture where which pronouns people are referred to as change based on something other than gender, such as rank, class, particular types of magical ability, job, relationship to the speaker, or any other societally relevant distinction. Even if this is never explained, readers will probably start to pick up on it, and then you can use a character’s pronouns to convey information about their background quickly and seamlessly.

Characters using neopronouns that reflect elements of their character. Pronouns are a part of gender expression, just like clothing or hair, and just like clothing or hair, people could pick certain pronouns for reasons entirely unrelated to gender. For instance, a character who has been dehumanized a lot could use it/its pronouns, not for gender reasons, but to reclaim them from those who abused it.

On a similar note, a character might use gender-neutral pronouns not because they’re nonbinary, but because their native language doesn’t have gendered pronouns, so they’re more comfortable with gender-neutral ones. Or maybe they start out using gendered pronouns and then switch to using gender-neutral ones to help show them reconnecting with that aspect of their heritage.

Characters deciding to change their pronouns as a sign of an important moment in their character arc. (Pronouns can be an expression of A LOT more than gender, as explained in the above two points, and I’m sure you can probably come up with even more ideas than just those listed here.)

One character could go by pronouns that none of the other characters do, so the audience still get hints that it’s them even when they’re not mentioned by name.

Neopronouns are shorter than names, but theoretically, if you did it right, they could carry just as much symbolism, foreshadowing, and/or other meaning.

…for example, you could use different pronouns in different situations to tell something about that situation, or as some form of symbolism, though for the latter, you may wanna stick to neos to avoid playing into traditional gender stereotypes or otherwise potentially seeming like you’re making a point about male vs. female or binary vs. nonbinary genders. Neos don’t have the gendered connotations of she/her or he him, so they’re usually judged on the vibe of the sound.

In historical settings. Historical neopronouns exist! Or, in modern, real-life-or-close-to-it settings, you could have a character use older neopronouns to indicate that the character may have been a) around for a long time (maybe there’s some fantasy elements and they’re immortal?) and involved in the queer community for a long time b) really interested in history in general or queer history in particular. They don’t necessarily have to have these meanings, but still.

This is just scratching the surface. I’m tired of writers seeing nonbinary pronouns, especially neopronouns, as a roadblock or hassle, something that detracts from their work, or else something that is necessary solely for the sake of representation, rather than the potential valuable addition to the writer’s toolbox that they are.

I’m tired of the lack of representation not just because of the lack of representation in it of itself (though that is also a big issue; normalizing gender neutral language and neopronouns is very important and literature could go a long way to help with that), but also because it’s so clear to me that in refusing to use that representation, in declaring it “too hard to write with” or “too confusing,” writers are cutting themselves off from a vast array of fascinating narrative opportunities. If you don’t know how to use them, great! It’s never too late to learn, and who knows, you (or your readers) might end up using the knowledge you learn in real life! I’m sure you weren’t born knowing how proper sentence structure or dialogue formatting works either.

Your story doesn’t have to be about gender or have a deeper message about its role in society for non-standard pronouns to be something you can use. Let your dragon be referred to as ae/aer. Let your superhero switch between multiple sets of pronouns. Let your escaped lab experiment reclaim “it/its.” Let your characters go by an array of pronouns as wide as the distribution of their names.

You don’t have to explain. You don’t have to have an in-universe explanation, not if you don’t want one. Your reader should be able to figure it out on their own, and like with most symbolism, explaining could detract from its power unless it’s a specific focus. At the end of the day, pronouns are just words, and as a writer, words are your tools to use as you see fit. Some might carry certain historical or real world baggage, but that’s true outside of just pronouns; just do some research, handle it as respectfully as you can, and don’t let it stop you from exploring this whole entire aspect of the language you use.
