This Thanksgiving, I’m thinking about a Filipino folklore surrounding a ghoul/vampire called the Aswang. In doing this, I’ve had to think a lot about the colonization of my homeland in the Philippines and also the colonization of the Americas. There’s a lot of pain and difficulty with talking about these topics but extreme value with recognizing this pain and difficulty and attempting to remedy it with the way we talk about uniting and respecting each other. Part of trying to move forward is recognizing and understanding history. So this Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for my voice, for people who listen. I’m thankful for community, for family, for my ancestors. I’m thankful for the voices and people who persisted even though history tried to bury their fight. And I’m thankful to celebrate living.
