2020 Nissan Sentra First Drive Review: Taking on the Joneses
Keeping up with the Joneses is tough, but it’s especially tough if the “Joneses” are the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. The former offers up big-car levels of room and sporty driving dynamics, while the latter is value-friendly and offers up a hybrid option. What room does that leave for the 2020 Nissan Sentra? According to Nissan, the answer is style, substance, and a premium-car experience that you can’t get elsewhere in the segment.
It’d be fair to say that the last-generation Sentra wasn’t a hit with critics. In our last Big Test featuring the entire compact sedan segment, the Sentra finished dead last, due to being underpowered, inefficient, cheaply built, and just all-around awful to drive. With the big three American automakers backing out of compact sedans to focus on more profitable trucks and SUVs, it’d be fair to ask why Nissan didn’t just cut its losses and do the same.
Nissan has three compelling reasons for hanging in there. For starters, pride is on the line—the Sentra is Nissan’s best-selling nameplate ever. Then there’s a matter of sales. Despite the Detroit automakers reading the tea leaves and deciding to bail on compact sedans, Americans bought over 4 million of the things last year, making it the third-largest segment behind full-size pickups and midsize SUVs. Perhaps an even more compelling reason for Nissan is the fact that the last Sentra, despite its warts, is still the third-best-selling car in the segment as of November 2019.
.
With a renewed focus on why people still bought sedans—style, value, efficiency, and technology, the company says—Nissan’s designers, engineers, and product planners came back with the 2020 Sentra. Sporting mini-Maxima sheetmetal, the new Sentra rides on a new platform that’s both 2 inches lower and wider than the previous car, and features a multi-link rear suspension (an upgrade from the twist-beam rear on the old car) and a new electric power steering rack engineered to both improve ride quality and handling performance. Inside, designers took inspiration from the Maxima and GT-R, with higher-spec Sentras getting features like contrast stitching and quilted leather.
Striking the balance between value, efficiency, and technology is tough, so Nissan vastly simplified the Sentra lineup for 2020. While rivals like the Civic, Corolla, or Hyundai Elantra might offer up multiple engine options, Nissan sticks with just one for the new Sentra—a 2.0-liter I-4 with 149 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT, netting an EPA-estimated 28-29/37-39/32-33 mpg city/highway/combined, depending on trim.
Speaking of, Nissan also opted to simplify the Sentra lineup, too, having just three trim levels: S, SV, and SR, with the latter two cars available with premium packages. Satisfying the tech aspect, Nissan hopes, are new Apple CarPlay/Android Auto-friendly infotainment systems on SV and SR models, and its “Safety Shield 360” active driver safety technology—necessary for the ever-important IIHS Top Safety Pick + Score. Prices creep up a hair, with the Sentra S starting at $20,015, the Sentra SV starting at $21,195, and the Sentra SR starting at $22,355. Fully loaded Sentras should top out around $25,000.
Out on the road behind the wheel of a loaded Sentra SR tester, equipped with the premium package, the difference between old Sentra and new is night and day. Whereas the old Sentra wheezed, groaned, and floated down the road, the 2020 model feels solid, competent, and quite nice to drive. The biggest improvement is in ride quality and body control. Whether you refuse to slow for your neighborhood speed bumps, or you’re blasting down a good road, the Sentra’s ride is compliant yet firm, with minimal body roll. Nissan’s Active Ride Control—a feature that uses the car’s brakes to subtly minimize fore-and-aft pitch—deserves just as much credit as the new multilink rear suspension here. Steering feel is improved, too. While I wouldn’t go so far as to call the Sentra sporty, it tracks straight and has decent feel from its slightly over-boosted helm.
The Sentra’s powertrain is similarly inoffensive. Nissan’s four-pot is nowhere near segment-leading from a power perspective, but for most buyers it’ll get the job done just fine. It’s relatively smooth off the line—only getting a touch surgey in heavy stop-and-go traffic—and it makes power consistently throughout its rev band. The Sentra’s CVT does its best to convince you it’s a real automatic when you stomp on the gas, faking an infinite number of shifts before eventually giving in and holding the tach needle steady. Sport mode, toggled on via an unmarked button on the shifter, increases throttle response, makes the CVT opt for max rpm and power sooner, and, most interestingly, gives you rev-matched “downshifts” if you’re hard on the brakes going into a corner.
“Inoffensive” may seem like damning with faint praise, but truth be told, Nissan’s approach is pretty smart. Beating a Honda or Volkswagen in driving dynamics is tough—beating them on interior design and quality is far easier. On that front, the Sentra really excels. The Nissan’s cabin is a nice place to be, especially if you’ve opted for a premium package-equipped SV or SR (that package costs $2,460 or $2,170, respectively.) The former gets gorgeous-looking quilted leather seats with contrasting stitching, while the latter gets sporty-looking orange accents throughout the interior. Material quality is also significantly improved—even the cloth-equipped Sentra SV has soft-touch materials on its door cards and on its dash topper, lending an air of quality lacking in the previous-generation car. (Unfortunately, no base Sentra S models were available to test.)
The cabin is also relatively spacious. The front buckets are comfortable and both occupants will have an easy time finding outlets and cubbies for phones, drinks, and keys. Although passengers in back won’t have as much space as those in a Civic, the Sentra’s rear seats are adult-friendly (especially if you skip the sunroof, which impedes on headroom some), and feature a USB outlet to keep your device juiced up on the go.
When the 2020 Nissan Sentra hits dealers at the end of February, it’ll not only represent a huge step up when compared to the brand’s previous efforts, but it’ll also signal to the Hondas and Toyotas of the world that the Sentra isn’t going anywhere without a fight. The Sentra certainly undercuts its main rivals in price and content, and we can’t wait to see how the car compares with the Joneses in a head-to-head matchup.

Vrcholný model v nabídce plug-in hybridních vozů BMW řady 5 se zážehovým řadovým šestiválcem a pohonem všech kol pro maximální hospodárnost a dynamické výkony. Rozšířená nabídka plug-in hybridních modelů BMW řady 5 nyní obsahuje pět modelů.
Mnichov. BMW řady 5 významným způsobem přispívá k dosažení cílů minulých i budoucích. S více než 50 tisíci celosvětově prodanými kusy se plug-in hybridní modely BMW řady 5 staly v roce 2019 nejúspěšnějšími elektrifikovanými modely BMW Group.
Rozšířená nabídka plug-in hybridů BMW řady 5 nyní zahrnuje pět modelů.
Zvýšením počtu modelů vybavených inovativním plug-in hybridním pohonem v listopadu 2020 ze dvou na pět nabídne nové BMW řady 5 největší počet plug-i hybridních modelů v rámci jedné modelové řady BMW Group.
Nejnovější generace technologie BMW eDrive ve spojení se zážehovým čtyřválcovým motorem pohání plug-in hybridní modely BMW 530e. V červenci 2020 bylo představeno nové BMW 530e Sedan (kombinovaná spotřeba paliva: 1,8–1,7 l/100 km; kombinovaná spotřeba elektřiny: 14,8–13,7 kWh/100 km; kombinované emise CO2: 42–39 g/km)* a nové BMW 530e xDrive Sedan (kombinovaná spotřeba paliva: 2,1–2,0 l/100 km; kombinovaná spotřeba elektřiny: 16,4–15,9 kWh/100 km; kombinované emise CO2: 49–46 g/km)*.
V listopadu 2020 si svou premiéru odbude nové BMW 530e Touring (kombinovaná spotřeba paliva: 2,1–1,9 l/100 km; kombinovaná spotřeba elektřiny: 15,9–14,9 kWh/100 km; kombinované emise CO2: 47–43 g/km)* a nové BMW 530e xDrive Touring (kombinovaná spotřeba paliva: 2,3–2,1 l/100 km; kombinovaná spotřeba elektřiny: 16,9–15,9 kWh/100 km; kombinované emise CO2: 52–49 g/km)*.
V režimu SPORT pomáhá zážehovému řadovému šestiválci elektromotor a společně mohou dosáhnout výkonu až 290 kW/394 k.
Aktivní zvukový doprovod „Active Sound Design“, rovněž generovaný audiosystémem vozu, nabízí autentický a v režimu SPORT obzvláště intenzivní a výrazný zvuk.
Elektromobilita propojená s digitalizací: Digitální služby pro plug-in hybridní modely BMW řady 5.
Funkce BMW eDrive Zone umožňuje automatické přepínání systému pohonu do čistě elektrického režimu při vjezdu do městské nízkoemisní zóny a podobných městských oblastí. Lokálně bezemisní jízda s plug-in hybridním modelem BMW je navíc odměňována bonusovými body prostřednictvím celosvětově jedinečného věrnostního programu BMW Points.
Předehřátí/vychlazení interiéru pomocí nezávislého topení a klimatizace zaručuje optimalizované pohodlí v každém ročním období.

Ceed a Stonic.
K loňským úspěchům značky Kia přispěl i narůstající zájem zákazníků o vyspělá hnací ústrojí. Prodeje hybridních, plug-in hybridních a čistě elektrických vozů značky v roce 2019 narostly z 58 029 na 66 386 kusů (+14,4 %).
Nejprodávanější elektrifikovanou modelovou řadou značky zůstalo i nadále Niro (zahrnuje hybridní, plug-in hybridní a čistě elektrické provedení), pro nějž se rozhodlo celkem 57 519 zákazníků (+27,1 % oproti roku 2018). U modelu Niro Hybrid bylo evidováno 37 475 kusů (+8,2 %), vedle dalšího růstu díky variantě Plug-in Hybrid (10 144 kusů, +1,9 %) a čistě elektrickému provedení e-Niro (9 900 kusů).
V roce 2019 se v zemích EU a členských státech EFTA stala nejprodávanějším produktem značky modelová řada Ceed, u níž prodejci zaznamenali celkem 110 201 kusů – což znamená meziroční nárůst o 46,0 %.
Regionální evropská centrála Kia sídlem v německém Frankfurtu nedávno převzala odpovědnost za několik nových trhů z celé Evropy a regionu Kavkazu (vedle zemí EU a členských států EFTA). Evropské vedení firmy nyní pokrývá celkem 39 trhů a nově se stará o Turecko, Ukrajinu, Ázerbájdžán, Srbsko, Bosnu, Černou Horu, Gruzii, Makedonii, Moldavsko a Albánii. V roce 2019 vzrostly prodeje modelů Kia v rámci všech 39 trhů o 1,8 % z 510 650 na 519 789 vozidel.

Ford bets on an electric Mustang to charge its turnaround
DETROIT (Reuters) – The Mustang Mach E electric sport utility vehicle Ford Motor Co (F.N) unveiled in Los Angeles on Sunday is more than another car for the storied automaker.
Ford Motor Co. shows the all-new electric Mustang Mach-E vehicle for a photo shoot at a studio in Warren, Michigan, U.S. October 29, 2019. Picture taken October 29, 2019. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook
The Mach E has become within Ford a high-profile test for a restructuring that has been marred by profit warnings, costly quality problems & the troubled launch this year of another meaningful vehicle, the Ford Explorer sport utility.
For Chief Executive Jim Hackett, the Mach E’s aggressive design & futuristic interior represent a long-awaited, visible sign of the overhaul of the company’s product creation process that he has tried to explain to skeptical Wall Street analysts for the past two years.
By accelerating the “clock speed” of vehicle development, cutting overlapping product architectures to just five from 13 & extending the company’s most successful brands to new products, Ford could slash $20 billion out of a five-year, 2018-2023 product plan, Hackett told Reuters.
“This is the first thing we generated out of this new thinking,” Hackett said in an interview ahead of the Mach E unveiling. “We have a lot more coming.”
For Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr., the Mustang Mach E puts together two previously conflicting goals: His desire for Ford to be a leader in clean cars & make the automaker carbon-neutral by 2030, & his personal love of the Mustang & its growling V-8 engine.
“We are really pushing our chips in on the table with this vehicle,” Ford said in an interview ahead of the Mach E’s unveiling. The automaker has said it will spend $11.5 billion developing electric & hybrid models by 2022.
The Mach E started with humble ambitions.
The SUV originally was to be what Ted Cannis, Ford’s global director for electrification, called a “compliance” play – an electric variant of a front-wheel drive internal combustion vehicle, aimed at generating emissions credits to comply with clean air regulations at low cost. There was no link to the Mustang’s muscle car image.
Boring electric cars were the norm for Ford & other legacy automakers. Then Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) in 2013 launched its Model S – an electric car that looked like a sporty European luxury sedan with a giant screen for a dashboard & entertainment & functional features that could be upgraded with over-the-air software updates.
Tesla’s market value is now higher than Ford’s.
Ford’s own customer research showed silly electric cars were a mistake, Cannis & other executives said.
‘MUSTANG EXPERIENCE’
Those doubts came to a head in mid-2017 when Hackett, then newly appointed, reviewed the design for the electric SUV with Executive Vice President Jim Farley, who has owned seven of the cars starting with a 1965 model he restored when he was 14 years old.
“It’s not satisfactory enough,” Hackett recalled saying. Farley agreed, & Hackett said, “We tear it up.”
The team designing the vehicle started over, using a new architecture engineered from the start to be a battery electric vehicle, instead of the original plan to use a modified version of an internal combustion engine vehicle, Ford executives said.
The Mustang muscle car’s distinctive “shark face” front end & body proportions were adapted to a new skin, & under the floor Ford designed a new battery pack that can deliver up to 300 miles (483 km) of range in an “extended range” version.
The re-do had to be accomplished much faster than normal to stay on target for a fall 2020 launch.
“We were super behind time,” said exterior designer Chris Walter during a briefing on the vehicle ahead of the Los Angeles debut.
A concept for new dashboard software & a display using a 15.5-inch (39 cm) diagonal screen was pulled together in just 90 days by a 15-person group that called itself Team Menlo – a reference to Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park, New Jersey, laboratory. A paper prototype of the new screen used an empty Keurig coffee pod to represent a large control knob.
The overhaul cost money, yet Ford product development chief Hau Thai-tang told Reuters the committed electric vehicle architecture should allow for 25% to 30% improvements in manufacturing efficiency to assist offset the cost.
The final call on using the Mustang name came from the top, & was not given easily.
“I was dead set against it, initially,” Bill Ford said. Ford said he started to warm to the idea as he saw the styling & the performance data for the vehicle.
Ford said he did not grant his approval until earlier this year after driving a prototype.
“It felt like a Mustang experience to me,” he said.
TURNING POINTS
This is not the first time a challenge to reinvent the Mustang has emboldened Ford employees to break with conference during a rough patch in the company’s history.
The original Mustang launched in 1964 was derived from a mainstream Falcon compact car, & quickly became a hit, far outselling the company’s projections.
In the early 1990s, with the economy in a slump, a small group of Ford employees rebelled against a plan to convert the rear-wheel drive Mustang into a front-wheel drive car developed by Ford’s then-partner, Japanese automaker Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T). That project became a laboratory for cutting the costs of product engineering by putting representatives of different functions on the same team.
The Mach E is another turning point, Hackett said. “The science project platform for EVs is now gone.”

A Tesla for Less Than $10,000?
youtube
Buying a Tesla new will set you back anywhere from $42,900 to $137,000, depending on which model you choose.1 The Model S, Tesla’s midpriced sedan, starts at $85,000, but Rich Benoit, a 30-something father of three and IT worker, got one for $6,500. It’s the topic of his now infamous YouTube page, Rich Rebuilds, which has racked up more than 39 million views.2
The sought-after electric cars have been growing in popularity along with the U.S. electric vehicle industry, which experienced an 81 percent jump in sales in 2018 compared to the year before.3
Tesla was responsible for more than half of these sales, selling nearly 140,000 of its lower cost Model 3 units alone. When sales of the Model 3 are removed, the statistics show a very different picture, with just 11 percent growth in the entire electric vehicle market.4
It’s safe to say that consumers are on the hunt for lower priced electric cars — but Benoit’s cost is virtually unheard of. So how did he get an $85,000 vehicle for a fraction of the cost? As The Boston Globe reported, it started when “He pulled a 1,300-pound, 400-volt battery out of a Tesla that had been under water.“5
Man Rebuilds Tesla From Salvage Yard — With No Help From Tesla
Benoit purchased a Model S that he calls “Delores” from a New Jersey salvage yard. The vehicle had been stuck in a flood, but the amateur mechanic was undeterred, determined to rebuild the car from the ground up, starting with removing its massive battery. But he was quickly met with a number of obstacles, not the least of which was Tesla’s reluctance to help anyone fix their cars.
Massachusetts has a Right to Repair Initiative, which grants vehicle owners access to information to help them fix their own cars — the same type of information furnished to dealerships and repair shops. However, since Tesla doesn’t have any dealerships, it’s exempt from this requirement.
"We’re in a society where if you need to know something you Google it, but there was nothing out there, no one who knew how to fix them,” Benoit told the Globe. But this was only the first obstacle. After stripping the car of its damaged parts and electronics, he contacted Tesla to order new ones, and was quickly turned away.
“Tesla does not want anyone working on its cars besides Tesla, and it refused to sell Benoit the parts he wanted,” according to the Globe. “A Tesla representative, in a statement to the Globe, said ‘there are significant safety concerns when salvaged Teslas are repaired improperly or when Tesla parts are used outside of their original design intent, as these vehicles could pose a danger to both the mechanic and other drivers on the road.’”6
One Year and $6,500 Rebuilds Tesla Model S
Since he was unable to buy parts from Tesla or anywhere else, he found another salvaged Model S, this one with usable electronics and batteries. Using the parts, he was able to slowly but surely piece Delores back together, documenting his journey on YouTube at every step of the way.
It took about a year, but the restored vehicle ultimately passed state inspection and looked like new. After tallying up his costs, including those he was able to recoup by selling duplicate and extra parts, he paid only $6,500 for the car. The story continues, however, as Benoit now helps other Tesla owners interested in fixing their cars.
Tesla has a limited number of service centers and reportedly struggles with parts shortages, and now Benoit is opening a new repair shop solely for electric vehicles — and even has a former Tesla mechanic to work there.
It’s a boon for Tesla owners, who often complain they have to wait months to find a mechanic who can service their vehicle — and when they do may be charged upward of $175 an hour.7 Ultimately, he hopes the service center will also be a place to educate owners about electric vehicles and even convert gas-powered vehicles to electricity.
“It has been a long, complicated, strange trip since he opened that waterlogged battery, wondering if he was about to electrocute himself. And despite all of the ups and downs, he insists he is not at war with Tesla. 'Maybe I was for a few weeks after they wouldn’t sell me the parts,’ he says. No, this is a love story, of how a man who says he has gas in his veins decided to go electric,” the Globe wrote.8
Electric Cars Cost Less to Make and Service
Analysts believe the electric vehicle industry is going to continue to grow in 2019, with more manufacturers and models entering the mix.
Chris Nelder, manager of Rocky Mountain Institute’s mobility practice, told Green Tech Media, “I don’t think 2019 is going to be all about the Model 3. There are a lot more manufacturers making a lot more EVs … In 2019, we’re going to have much more significant participation from other major manufacturers, especially in the high-end luxury crossover/SUV segment.”9
The growth may be so explosive that Morgan Stanley estimated 3 million traditional auto industry jobs could be lost over the next three to five years as a result.10 In fact, it’s estimated that it takes 30 percent less labor to manufacture an electric vehicle than a gas-powered one, with some estimates putting it up to a 50 percent cut.
Maintenance and servicing of electric vehicles is also less costly, which could heighten the demand for them even further, especially once service centers become widespread.
Are There EMF Concerns in Electric Cars?
Electric cars appear to be a clear winner for the environment, although there are a few considerations, such as the rare minerals that must be mined for the batteries and the need in some areas to power your “electric” car from a power plant using coal. However, another potential concern is exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
According to Joel Moskowitz, Ph.D., director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the University of California (UC) Berkeley:11
“Hybrid and electric cars may be cancer-causing as they emit extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMF). Recent studies of the EMF emitted by these automobiles have claimed either that they pose a cancer risk for the vehicles’ occupants or that they are safe.
Unfortunately, much of the research conducted on this issue has been industry-funded by companies with vested interests on one side of the issue or the other which makes it difficult to know which studies are trustworthy.
Meanwhile, numerous peer-reviewed laboratory studies conducted over several decades have found biologic effects from limited exposures to ELF EMF. These studies suggest that the EMF guidelines established by the self-appointed, International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) are inadequate to protect our health.”
Both the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have said magnetic fields are “possibly carcinogenic” to humans, which, Moskowitz suggests, means the precautionary principle should prevail, and products should be designed to minimize consumers’ exposure to ELF and EMF.
“This especially applies to hybrid and electric automobiles as drivers and passengers spend considerable amounts of time in these vehicles, and health risks increase with the duration of exposure,” he said, adding:12
“Based upon the research, more than 230 EMF experts have signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal which calls on the World Health Organization to establish stronger guidelines for ELF and radio frequency EMF.
Thus, even if EMF measurements comply with the ICNIRP guidelines, occupants of hybrid and electric cars may still be at increased risk for cancer and other health problems.”
Are Electric Cars the Future?
A poll conducted by Clean Energy Canada found that 64 percent of Canadians want the majority of vehicles sold to be electric, and 72 percent believe that electric vehicles will become the majority worldwide in the future.13 The findings echoed a U.S. survey, which similarly found that 74 percent believed electric cars were the future.14
Overall, the associations with electric cars were positive, with most believing the long-term savings on gas would outweigh the vehicle’s higher upfront cost. Nearly 60 percent also felt that electric vehicles would have a more positive environmental impact than recycling, switching to paperless billing or regulating their energy at home.
As for barriers, electric vehicle owners cited a need for faster and upgraded public charging stations, such as making them available at coffee shops and gyms, and giving an option to pay for a faster charge. For now, electric vehicles represent only a small fraction of cars on the market, but industry analysts agree that’s going to change, possibly sooner rather than later.
“Electrification, you cannot stop it anymore — it’s coming,” Elmar Kades, a managing director with the consulting firm AlixPartners, told NPR. “We have fantastic growth rates, between 50 and 60 percent on a global level.”15 While in 1997 there were just two electric cars on the market, there are now 98, and it’s expected that nongas cars, including electric, fuel cells and hybrids, will triple by 2025.16
The tipping point — when electric vehicles will outsell gas-powered ones — could be as near as 2025 or 2030, according to some analysts,17 and Benoit, who says he felt like a trailblazer when he first started his attempt to rebuild a Tesla,18 is likely only hastening the appeal by letting people know that — with a bit of grit and ingenuity — a Tesla could be had for under $10,000.

For now, electric vehicles represent only a small fraction of cars on the market, but industry analysts agree that's going to change, possibly sooner rather than later.
"Electrification, you cannot stop it anymore — it's coming," Elmar Kades, a managing director with the consulting firm AlixPartners, told NPR. "We have fantastic growth rates, between 50 and 60 percent on a global level."15 While in 1997 there were just two electric cars on the market, there are now 98, and it’s expected that nongas cars, including electric, fuel cells and hybrids, will triple by 2025.16
The tipping point — when electric vehicles will outsell gas-powered ones — could be as near as 2025 or 2030, according to some analysts,17 and Benoit, who says he felt like a trailblazer when he first started his attempt to rebuild a Tesla,18 is likely only hastening the appeal by letting people know that — with a bit of grit and ingenuity — a Tesla could be had for under $10,000.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Gets Prius-Rivaling Fuel Economy
Prius-rivaling fuel efficiency will now be one of the reasons why consumers might buy a Toyota Corolla. The EPA recently released the fuel economy estimates for the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan, and the hybrid variant tops the lineup at 53/52 mpg city/highway. Powered by the same hybrid system in the Prius, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid couples an Atkinson cycle 1.8-liter I-4 with two electric motors, an e-CVT, and a nickel-metal-hydride battery.
For those who prefer a more traditional powertrain, fret not because the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan’s s two four-cylinder engine options also yield solid fuel economy figures. The least efficient variants are the SE and XSE models with the six-speed manual and the XLE grade, which are rated at 29/36 mpg and 29/37 mpg, respectively. Lower trims, which are equipped with the smaller 1.8-liter unit are rated at 29/39 mpg with the manual or 30/38 mpg with the optional CVT. Opting for the more powerful 169-hp 2.0-liter mill actually gets you better mileage than the smaller engine at 31/38 mpg for the XSE and 31/40 mpg in other models.
With the new 2.0-liter I-4, the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan will be one of the most efficient compact sedans available when it goes on sale. The only non-hybrid vehicles that offer better fuel economy are the Honda Civic, Chevrolet Cruze TD, and the Toyota Corolla hatchback in SE trim with the CVT. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid is nearly at the top of its class, beating the Kia Niro, matching the Honda Insight, but slightly trailing the Prius and Hyundai Ioniq.

Which Electric Car Is Right for You?
Electric vehicles have reached another milestone—in Norway.
According to the Norwegian Road Traffic Information office, one-third of the 147,929 new cars sold in Norway last year ran on batteries, with Nissan’s humble Leaf (rather than the beleaguered, if stylish, Tesla Model S) the most popular all-electric in that market. Sales of electric vehicles in the country rose 40 percent in 2018 from a year earlier, according to the report.
And the momentum is growing. Moody’s analysts say sales of cars with an internal combustion engine peaked in 2018. Demand for so-called ICE vehicles will start to wane in 2019, they predict. Moody’s projects the market for electric vehicles in 2019 in North America will quadruple to 1.6 percent of the total.
So if you find yourself wanting to hop behind the wheel of a full electric or hybrid—while still enjoying a luxurious ride—here’s a guide to what we think are the best of these vehicleson the market now or in the near future.
Need Something Sporty, Small, and Personalized?
The Car: Polestar 1
Stats: The slick, $155,000 hybrid two-door coupe has electric motors and a four-cylinder combustion engine that will produce 600 horsepower and 1,000 Nm (738 pound-feet) of torque. The range will be 150 kilometers (93.2 miles) under electric-only power; the charging time has yet to be announced.
Where it Excels: With time-tested Swedish engineering and power sent to each of the rear wheels, the Polestar 1 has all the components needed—in theory—to drive like a real sports car. (Remember, so far this remains in concept form.) That, along with its hybrid drivetrain, which eliminates range anxiety, is going to be a big reason for this new brand to pull buyers from Porsche, Tesla, and Audi. Plus, because each Polestar car can be configured and personalized to a high degree using the brand’s novel subscription system, it will appeal to young, affluent buyers accustomed to purchasing items that reflect their personality and style.
Notes: Polestar is the performance luxury brand of Volvo Cars, owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. While the cars aren’t available yet—production will start in mid-2019 in Chengdu, China, with deliveries beginning in early 2020—they will be “sold” via an all-inclusive subscription model that combines automotive costs such as insurance and maintenance in a single monthly payment, unlike Tesla, which sells cars outright. Polestar North America will open its first Apple store-like retail space in New York.

Need Something Practical for Suburban Life?
The Car: Porsche Taycan
Stats: On a special 350-kilowatt charger, Porsche says, the Taycan will be able replenish a battery to 186 miles of range in less than 10 minutes. Total system output will be more than 600 horsepower. It will travel from zero to 62 mph in under 3.5 seconds. Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect it to cost less than $100,000.
Where it Excels: Those wanting a highly practical electric sedan would do well to choose the Taycan. It’s been in development for years at Porsche’s plant in Stuttgart, Germany, with a focus on driving performance, range, practicality, and good looks from perhaps the most trusted sports car maker in the world. If anything was a sure bet out the gate, this would be it.
Notes: This is Porsche’s first move into general production electrified cars and its first direct shot at Tesla. It will play a crucial role in parent Volkswagen AG’s lineup as the company makes more electric cars over the next eight years while streamlining operations to save billions of dollars. In theory, the Taycan is arriving at the perfect time, as Tesla consumers tire of the brand’s poor build quality, endless wait times, and the latest antics from Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk.

Need Something to Collect?
The Car: Ferrari LaFerrari
Stats: The hybrid LaFerrari has a V-12 engine and an electric motor that combine for a total output of 960 hp. It can reach 124 mph in less than 7 seconds (zero to 62 in less than 3 seconds). It has a top speed of 220 mph. (Ferrari doesn’t release electric-only range for this supercar, but all reports say it’s extremely limited.)
Where it Excels: The LaFerrari is good at getting attention. It’s good at making jaws drop from sports car and exotic car aficionados. It’s good for a weekend drive to the local cars & coffee meetup and for showing up in for dinner on a Friday night. And it’s good for sitting in your garage and appreciating in value.
Notes: This is the first hybrid from Ferrari. With ultralimited production, futuristic looks, an iconic heritage, and insane performance, it’s a true collector’s piece. Will Ferrari ever make something 100 percent electric? Maybe. In the meantime, the LaFerrari is more than enough.
Cross-Shop With: Porsche 918 Spyder
Need Something for a Weekend Warrior Lifestyle?
The Car: Jaguar I-Pace
Stats: The $69,500 electric SUV has all-wheel drive and a total 394 hp and 512 pound-feet of torque. It can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, about equal to much more expensive vehicles such as the Porsche Macan E-Hybrid and entry levels of the Tesla Model X. Top speed is 124 mph and it can travel 234 miles on a full charge. A typical 50-kilowatt DC rapid charger gets it from a zero to 80 percent charge in 85 minutes.
Where it Excels: The I-Pace is good for sightseeing. It has a massive panoramic roof that affords those in the back seat spectacular views. And it’s good for driving around town doing errands (there’s lots of space in the trunk for groceries), picking up the kids from practice, or heading out to camp, bike, ski, or hike for the weekend. Does this sound a lot like what the Taycan does? Yes, but with more room in the back.
Notes: This is the most exciting thing Jaguar has produced in years, including the sexy F-Type coupe. A low-riding, compact SUV that you might compare with everything from the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid, Audi Q5, and BMW X3 to the Mercedes-Benz GLC, the I-Pace is long and low, with handsome, modern body lines and an intuitive interior. Designed by Scot Ian Callum, a famous former Aston Martin designer, it more than holds its own against rival cars in range, performance, technology, and design.

Need a Motorcycle for Your Urban Commute?
The Bike: Zero FX
Stats: A full charge on a standard 110-volt household outlet takes 9 hours, or you can use Zero’s $600 hypercharger and do it in 4 ½ hours—or forget that altogether and simply swap out the battery. There are two modes: Eco and Sport. With a range of 91 miles in the city and 39 miles on the highway, Eco mode is significantly more practical. Top speed in either mode is 85 mph. Pricing starts at $8,495.
Where it Excels: The Zero FX is light and easy to maneuver in city streets. Its spongy shocks and nimble steering make it fly over cobblestones and potholes; its optional interchangeable battery pack means you barely have to wait at all to access a new charge.
Notes: As the motorcycle market dwindles, with Harley-Davidson in particular struggling to attract new and younger (than its pensioner-age) buyers, electric bikes are a bright spot within the segment. Zero makes the best of them in terms of design, reliability, rideability, and value.
Cross-Shop With: Alta Redshift SM
Need Something Very Fast—and Roomy?
The Car: Tesla Model S
Stats: It has a 2.5-second zero to 60 mph sprint time that eviscerates all contenders. Power can be difficult to quantify on all the varying levels of the Model S sedan, but the $94,000 Tesla Model S P100D hits around 590 hp. It’s officially rated with a range of 315 miles, though in real-world scenarios that dips to closer to 250 miles. With a basic garage wall outlet, charging can take as much as eight hours.
Where it Excels: The Tesla Model S in Ludicrous mode is the fastest mass-production electric vehicle you can buy. Heck, it’s faster than most regular sedans you can buy. And it offers massive amounts of space for a four-door sedan, with a hatchback and cabin devoid of the center console that typically eats up space in conventional cars. If you want something immensely practical for daily living that also drives like the dickens, this one’s for you.
Notes: Tesla has a big target on its back, as Porsche, Audi, and Jaguar play catch-up to the electric leader. But there’s a reason it’s winning the electric game—it was the first and the best for a long time. The Model S, when in top form, is still the best electric sedan you can buy now. As I said in the review linked above, the Model S P100D delivers an authentic, and powerful, driving experience sure to pump adrenaline through the veins of even the most discerning driver.
Cross-Shop With: Porsche Panamera Hybrid
Need Something Flashy That Won’t Give You Range Anxiety?
The Car: BMW i8
Stats: The $147,500 i8 coupe has a twin-turbo, 3-cylinder, 228 horsepower engine and a 141 hp electric motor. Total output is 369 hp, about the same as a Porsche 911 Carrera. Zero to 60 mph is 4.2 seconds; top speed is 155 mph.
Where it Excels: Straight speed performance behind the wheel of the i8 is less exhilarating than it might appear from the car’s looks, but it hugs corners like a boa constrictor and stays connected to the road like a supermagnet. It’s a thrill to drive thoughtfully designed inside and out. Those upward-opening doors will only get cooler with age.
Notes: One of the few electric sports cars available in both coupe and convertible forms, the BMW i8 is well on its way to iconic status. One of the first hybrid sports cars on the public market when it was introduced 10 years ago, it still remains a good standard of excellence.
Cross-Shop With: Acura NSX
Need Something for Solo Life in the City?
The Car: Fiat 500e
Stats: At $32,995, the Fiat 500e is not cheap for a small car, but it is among the cheaper electric cars you can buy. (The interior is far from luxurious—that’s not the point.) It has a total range of 84 miles, with strong efficiency ratings of 121 mpge in the city and 103 mpge on the highway. On a 110-volt charger, it takes 24 hours to get a full charge.
Where it Excels: The Fiat 500e is a snap to park—in some spots you can even park it perpendicular to the curb thanks to its diminutive stature. It’s good for short-distance driving to places where you want to dash in and out for quick sundry items or errands.
Notes: This tiny (although darling) thing is not what you’d want for driving on the highway or if you’ve got to spend hours at a time in the car. The interior is cramped and awkward for anyone over 5 feet 8 inches tall. But if you’re the type to have a city house and a country house, or if you have a big apartment in New York and need something just to get around and park with ease, it’ll make a great addition to the family. (Note: As of this writing it’s sold only in select states in the U.S., including California and Oregon.)
Cross-Shop With: Mini Electric concept (coming soon)
Need a Sporty Compact Daily Driver for You and a Partner?
The Car: Audi E-Tron GT
Stats: The 590-horsepower four-door “coupe” will have a range of 248 miles. According to Audi, its 100 kWh battery pack will have a zero to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and be able to charge to 80 percent battery strength in 20 minutes.
Where it Excels: If Audi’s current sports line is any indication, the E-Tron GT will be ultrasmooth and quick. It’s not ideal for families, but with four doors and a small back seat, it affords enough room for a random friend or two to join on a trip, or to throw extra bags behind the front seats, without sacrificing the cool compact look or performance.
Notes: Audi’s E-Tron SUV, out later this year, spells the company’s first big push into electric vehicles for mass consumption, but the style-minded will wait for the car version. A low body, square nose, stubby rear end, and graphic daytime running lights make it look ready to hustle, and it retains the cool elegance of the German brand with body-style overtones and a roofline like the new Audi A7. Inside, the seats are lined in fabric made from recycled fibers. So far, the car is still in concept form, but the production version is likely to retain most of the details from the concept. Production begins in 2021.
Cross-Shop With: Tesla Model 3
Need a Trustworthy Family Hauler?
The Car: Mercedes-Benz EQC 400
Stats: The all-wheel-drive EQC 400 will have an 80 kWh battery and a dual-motor electric drivetrain with combined output of 402 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of immediate torque. Top speed will be 112 mph with a sprint time to 60 mph of 4.9 seconds. Total maximum driving range for the European version will be 279 miles (U.S. numbers and battery charging times have yet to be announced).
Where it Excels: If this concept continues with Mercedes’ well-known and beloved devotion to offering the most progressive technology and safety systems, it’ll be the most advanced and thoughtfully practical family-suited SUV on the market.
Notes: Daimler has big plans (and more than $11 billion budgeted) to put 10 pure-electric vehicles on the road by 2022. The Mercedes EQs, which stands for “electric intelligence,” include precursors such as the discontinued the B250e, a small electric hatchback of sorts, and the EQ Silver Arrow sports car concept that Mercedes showed earlier this year in Pebble Beach, Calif. This SUV will compete against the Jaguar I-Pace SUV, the production versions of the BMW Vision iNext, and that electric e-Tron crossover from Audi. It will arrive at U.S. dealers in 2020.

Vynikající jízdní dynamika a příkladná hospodárnost jsou klíčovými vlastnostmi nového BMW řady 3 Sedan. S rozšířením nabídky motorů o plug-in hybridní pohonnou jednotku dostávají tyto základní vlastnosti nového sportovního sedanu další a především průkopnický rozměr.
Společně tyto dvě pohonné jednotky vyvíjejí celkový výkon 185 kW/252 koní a maximální točivý moment 420 Nm.
BMW 330e Sedan kombinuje jednoznačné zaměření na sport a dynamiku s prověřenými přednostmi plug-in hybridního modelu.
Navíc spotřeba paliva a emisní hodnoty klesly v případě druhé generace plug-in hybridního sportovního sedanu o 10 %.
