THE NEXT DAY

"Fuck" You groaned. It was barely 10:30 in the morning, and the moment you finished brushing your teeth, she pounced on you. The sound of slapping skin and the background noise of HGTV echoed throughout the room. You thought she would have woken up with regrets because of last night but to your surprise, it was the opposite. 

Your hands gripped her cheeks as you helped her continue to bounce. Jenna's head was thrown back, gasps and curses spilling from her mouth. She pushed your black tank top up your torso to reveal your abs. She needed something to keep her grounded in reality. Her nails scratched down your abs as she bounced harder.

“Jah…I’m about…to cum” Jenna gasped and her walls fluttered around you.

"Me too baby" You bit your lip. Your hands moved from her cheeks and traveled up to her breasts. You roughly squeezed them in your hands and after a few more bounces, Jenna choked on her moan and her hips stuttered.

“I would never” Jenna smirked and tossed her phone on the bed. You then sprinted to the bathroom, laughs and giggles sounding throughout the apartment.

You were sitting on your couch watching TV, until your buzzer to your apartment went off. At first, you ignored it thinking that it’s probably just the delivery man trying to get in. But it kept going off so you just got up and buzzed whoever in. You were just chilling on couch again until a knock is heard on your door. You furrow your face in confusion. You went to the door and looked through the peephole and saw your mother.

You opened the door, “Ma?”

Your mother Delyse or ‘Del’ as she liked to be called smiled and walked into your apartment, “I don’t know why I had this feeling like I should be here.”

“Right now?” You questioned.

“Actually, I felt it a couple of months ago but I brushed it off. But when I came back, the need felt stronger than ever. Are you okay?” Del asked concerned.

“I’m good Ma. How was Jamaica?” You asked steering the conversation off you.

“Wonderful. Your Gigi was asking about you, she’s upset that you didn’t come down” Del said and sat down on your couch.

“I’ll try to visit her later this year. I was busy streaming and making videos” You replied to her.

Del just hummed in response. You grabbed your phone and saw a text message from Jenna.

Hollywood 🤰🏻: I finished early. Thank god. You want something to eat?

NYC 🩵: nah…but my mother is here.

You watched as the text bubbles appeared and then disappeared several times before it disappeared completely.

Obviously, you didn’t expect her. You and Jenna wanted to go over ideas for how you wanted to tell her but all of that is out the window now.

“So…you out here hoeing around” Del questioned nonchalantly.

That made you choke on your spit, “Ma what the hell kind of question is that?”

“I’m just asking. Do as you please but be safe and don’t get any girl pregnant” Del said.

You chuckle nervously and turned your attention to your TV. You text Jenna a couple of more times. You and your mother continue to converse between each other until your phone starts ringing.

“Hello?” You answer.

“Can you uh…come open the door?” Jenna asked. She sounded a little out of breath.

“Just hit the buzzer for my apartment” You said.

“I need your help with something. Come down” Jenna stated. You agreed and put your hoodie and slides on.

“I’ll be back” You told your mother and left your apartment. You went to the first floor and saw Jenna struggling with some flowers.

“Damn girl, you brought every single flower in the world?” You chuckled.

Jenna giggled, “I don’t know what kind of flowers she likes so I got one of each.”

“So sweet of you. Future reference she likes orchids” You told her and took the big bouquet from her hands. You two went back up to your apartment and before you can even open your door, your mother opens it for you.

“Oh who’s this Tuffie?” Del questioned as you walked inside your apartment.

You sigh at the nickname, “Ma, this is Jenna, my girlfriend.”

You watched as your mother gave Jenna a look up and down. You felt Jenna squeeze your hand. A moment of silence goes by before a smile grows on Del’s face.

“It’s nice to meet you Jenna. You look familiar though” Del said.

“She’s an actress. We met at one of her movie premieres. The scary movie Davis was in” You said.

“Oh! That movie with the long mouth mask” Del said.

“Yeah Scream Ma” You chuckled. You set the slightly heavy flowers on your counter by her purse, “Jenna also got you these.”

“Oh thank you so much dear. I haven’t received flowers in a long time” Del gushed and smelled the flowers.

You and Jenna look at each other, “Ma, we gotta tell you something. Now, before we say it, I just want you to know that we both know what we’re getting into and-”

“You’re pregnant” Del said casually towards Jenna.

“I…I…how?” You questioned.

“Baggy clothing. Slight weight gain in the face. Come on I see all the signs, I mean I did birth two children.” Del stated.

Your mother sat down in one of your dining room chairs, “I thought I told you be careful Jah. You’re still young, both of you. You still have lives to live before being tied down with a child. A child is a lot of responsibility. Once that baby is brought into this world, it’s not just going to be you and her, it’s going to be you, her, and the child you share together.”

This time Jenna stepped up, "Uh...Mrs. Jimenez I know it's a bit unconventional, we're both still very young, and we're not even together-"

"First it's Reid and second...the two of you aren't together?" Delyse questioned. 

You and Jenna both looked at each other before Jenna spoke up, "Well...no it's a bit complicated. But truthfully, there's no other person I would want to share a child with. We know there are going to be some changes in the way we live our lives. Every decision we make, we have to do with a child in mind but I'm ready to make those changes. We are ready."

You nodded along with Jenna. You saw your mother look between the two of you with curious eyes.

"Even though I feel the way I feel. I wish you would have gotten married first or at least be together but I'm going to support the two of you in all ways possible" Del smiled and hugged the both of you.

You were glad that was out of the way. Your mother supported you, even though she wished it was done differently. She can't change the past, only help the present and look forward to the future. Now, you just need Jenna's family on the same page and it'll make things 10x better.

For the next two hours, your mother and Jenna converse amongst each other. You fell asleep on the couch, hands resting in your pants.

Del took Jenna onto your fire escape to talk more. She had a glass of wine in her hand while Jenna had apple juice.

“How did your mom take it?” Del asked and took a sip of her wine.

“Well, I was originally planning on telling her when I visited her next week but someone told her without my consent. She didn’t really take it well” Jenna sighed.

“What did she say, if you don’t mind me asking?” Del asked carefully.

“I kinda haven’t been answering her calls. I’m scared of what she has to say” Jenna stated and played with her fingers nervously.

"Honey, let me tell you something. No matter what your mother says or how she feels, it won't take away the fact she will always love you. You can be the worst possible person in the world and she will still love you. A bond between a good mother and her children, especially daughters is something so special and precious. You'll understand soon enough" Del said.

Jenna smirked at her, “You betting on us having a girl?”

“Oh I know it’s a girl. Girls run strong in this family” Del smiled.

Jenna softly chuckled at that. The two woman sit in a comfortable silence basking in the NYC polluted air and police sirens from every direction. Jenna’s eyes then flickered to her phone and her mind starts racing.

She missed hearing from her family. She knew the longer she avoided them, the worse it’ll be for her. So she grabbed her phone and excused herself. She went back inside and went into your room for some privacy. She gathered all the contacts she needed for a group FaceTime but before she can hit the green button. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath in.

“Relax Jenna” She muttered to herself and hit the green button.

It ranged for two seconds before each person answered the phone. Her sisters Mia, Aliyah, and Mariah, her brothers Issac and Markus, and finally her parents Natalie and Edward.

“Thank goodness, we were getting worried sick about you Jenna” Natalie said.

“Yeah, why haven’t you been returning our calls and messages” Edward asked.

Jenna sighed, "I need to get something off my chest first before everyone starts interrogating me. Yes, I am pregnant and yes I am keeping the baby. I know I'm young and my career is just taking off but I don't care about that stuff. All I care about is the person I share my child with, my unborn child, and my family. A family I hope still supports me."

Everyone except Natalie’s face was a look of shocked.

“Sweetie, why wouldn’t we still support you? We’re a bit disappointed but we would never leave you unsupported. We love you Jenna and we’re going to be here every step of the way” Natalie stated.

Tears start to gather in Jenna’s eyes. She was relieved that the pressure of telling your families were lifted. She was more ecstatic to hear that they will support the two of you with no problem.

“WE GONNA BE AUNTIES AND UNCLES” Aliyah screamed excitedly. Jenna laughed at her younger sister

"Are we going to meet the other parent anytime soon? Who is it by the way?" Mia asked.

“Her name is Jahaziel, she goes by Jah. We met at the Scream premiere earlier this year. She’s a YouTube/Twitch streamer” Jenna answered.

“No way JahBronxGamer! I watch all her streams and videos, I’m a huge fan of her. She makes me want to move to The Bronx. I just watched her stream earlier today” Markus commented.

“I’ll be sure to tell her that” Jenna replied with a smile.

Jenna spoke with her family a little more until one by one her siblings all left, promising to catch up more next week.

“I was scared to face you, that’s why I didn’t answer you guys.” Jenna revealed to her parents.

“Jenna, don’t ever be afraid to come talk to us. Despite the circumstances, we will always love and support you. Don’t ever forget that” Natalie stressed.

The tears start to fall down Jenna’s face, “Okay” she sniffled. She wiped the tears from her face.

“So…this partner treating you right?” Edward questioned.

"Technically, we aren't together but I feel things for her way more than I did Wesley. I just need to work out some stuff within me first before I get into another relationship." Jenna smiled wide at the thought of you.

Natalie and Edward look at each other before looking back at Jenna with a smile, "Well, we're happy you can acknowledge something like that and we can't wait to meet her."

"Nimona" fandom informational rundown

New to the fandom and a bit confused about things? Hopefully this will help!

Nimona was a webcomic by Nate Diana Stevenson/ND Stevenson that was first shown on tumblr on December 14, 2011, and Nate later launched it as an official webcomic on its own website on June 19, 2012. It was contracted for publication post-completion as a graphic novel sometime before November 1, 2012. The webcomic finished online publication on September 30, 2014. Shortly afterward, most of the webcomic was taken down as part of the contractual agreement for publication as a physical graphic novel, leaving only a short bit of the opening as a preview. The website for the webcomic later went down entirely, and is no longer accessible.

The comic was published in entirety as a single graphic novel on May 12, 2015. The movie adaptation rights were sold to Fox in 2015, as well, and the project was given to Blue Sky Studios. The comic was later adapted into a full cast audiobook on October 4, 2016. The graphic novel is available for purchase in paperback, hardcover, and as an ebook, and the audiobook is also available for purchase. (The link has international seller links). The graphic novel has been translated into 16 languages. It is also available in a special edition English hardcover via Illumicrate. They only ship from the UK, but ship internationally, and you don't need a subscription to buy the book. As the standard graphic novel and audiobook are ~7+ years old now, if you have a local library, you can see if either of them are available that way.

Disney bought 20th Century Fox Animation (later 20th Century Animation, the purchase completed in 2019), but later shut down Blue Sky Studios in 2021, cancelling the still-in-production movie. Crew worked on shopping the movie around for a new home after talks with Disney. The movie was later picked up and completed by Annapurna, DNEG, and Netflix, premiered June 14, 2023 in France, showed in select theaters starting principally on June 23, 2023, and released to general audiences on Netflix for streaming on June 30, 2023. In English, Nimona is voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz, Ballister Boldheart is voiced by Riz Ahmed, and Ambrosius Goldenloin is voiced by Eugene Lee Yang.

If you're looking for official merch, the movie soundtrack is up on multiple platforms, including YouTube, iOS, Spotify, and Amazon, and a vinyl version of the soundtrack was sold by iam8bit. There is an official humanoid Nimona plushie, a whale Nimona plushie, and a shark Nimona plushie, available via Gee and Hot Topic, as well as a variety of official shirts available via Hot Topic and Amazon (just search Brand: Nimona). Nate also still sells "Nimona" comic art on his INPRNT store.

Netflix released a free-to-read digital-only multimedia 358-page artbook for the movie (but took it down in March 2024). (It's also been released at least for crew/friends of crew(?) in physical release, so maybe it'll get mass release as a hardcover). Outside of this, a lot of the crew for the movie from both Blue Sky and DNEG have been releasing a ton of concept art and development stuff, and the cast and crew have been doing a lot of promotional interviews and videos going back through like April 2023, so there's a lot of material to look through on YouTube, tiktok, tumblr, twitter, Instagram, Facebook/Meta, and Vimeo, as well as various news and media sites. Nate is active on tumblr, his personal blog, twitter, and Instagram. Annapurna, DNEG, and Netflix also have multiple accounts on many platforms, including their own websites, YouTube, Facebook/Meta, and Twitter, and have been sharing clips and behind the scenes stuff.

Nimona actually has been added to a video game: Nimona was included as an event companion in SharkBite 2, a Roblox game.

If you're looking for fanworks, the fandom is active on most platforms, and has been ever since Nate started posting early art of the characters. Nate's talked at length in multiple places about how big the fandom was during the webcomic's publication. Mostly back then folks were very active in the Disqus comments on pages, which are a bit harder to find these days. There's a lot of the older comic fanart still circulating in different places (particularly tumblr, where the fandom was most active), some of which Nate reblogged. There is crossover between the comic and movie fandoms, as many fans of the comic love the movie and vice versa, and both fandoms are quite active. There is at least one active subreddit and fanwiki (and many others on assorted fantasy, comic, movie, and non-English language sites), as well as TV Tropes pages for both the comic and movie adaptation and a number of Discord servers.

For fanfiction, there are a ton of fics on Archive of Our Own in the comic tag and in the movie adaptation tag. There are also a number of fics on tumblr, some fics on fanfiction.net, and some on Wattpad. There are fanvids on tiktok, Instagram, and YouTube. There is fanart on tumblr, twitter, deviantart, instagram, and pixiv. There are cosplayers, meta analysts, roleplayers, music makers, and many other fanworkers

Whenever Riki wants him to look at something on his phone if its longer than a quick glance Jake NEEDS to look out the window, otherwise those chips he ate off the floor bc of Heeseung are coming up to land on the floor again. Other than that he loves to sing a long to songs <3 He would probably play the anything off the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack!

SUNGHOON- HE HAS THE COOLER W THE DRINKS ALL THE WAY IN THE BACK! They have tea, soda, water, everything. He wanted the seat all the way in the back for this reason. And because Sunoo is just on his phone the entire time. Sunghoon has def accidentally smacked Jake in the head with those sodas that are encased in glass. BY ACCIDENT. He also eats the ice from the cooler.... Sunghoon would play like old songs from I-Land and then be like "remember when so and so did this??" Just to add drama in the car.

SUNOO- On his phone the entire time!!! Next to Sunghoon in the back. He has his headphones in and he is playing a game. Sunoo is very quiet and just does his own thing! Only looks up when he gets a tincy motion sick or when he sleeps <3 He brought his own snacks. SUNOO DOESNT TRUST ANYONE NOT TO EAT THE FOOD W HIS NAME ON IT. Like whole process from the very beginning? Oh boy, it's very complicated, you have to be more specific :D but i'll try to explain below

1. Import 3d models, convet files, texture them and edit bones. - This part is the most time consuming and exausting. At least for me. It can take hours. Days (it's not my job so i do it in my free time ;-;). For example one model may have like 20-50 files and every each of them has at least 4 textures that need to be convert and added to Blender. There are no shortcuts, I have to do everything myself, sometimes not knowing what I'm doing, because I'm self-taught and maybe professionals will look at my files and cry how many mistakes I made xd But it's ok! This is how we learn and I really like doing it♥ Tbh that's why I stopped posting renders every day, because Blender is more complicated and time consuming. I can't just buy ready-made models, load poses and facial expressions and finish it after 30 minutes. I mean… I can, but what's the point in that?;) example of one material from a model that has 30+ such files [*]

I know it's quite complicated and Blender sounds scary. I had to learn all this on my own in every free time for weeks and I know I still have a long way to go. I had a long year, so I didn't get to write as much as I would have liked to, but we still got a ton done.

1. How many words have you written this year? 180,453 words.

2. How many works did you publish this year? Somehow the answer is eleven.

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? Reckless Abandon. Hands down. It took so much time to plan and so much energy to write and I am so proud of it. I'm writing the ending of the first draft right now and I'm sad to leave it behind.

HOWEVER I also very much enjoyed The Last Time, which is my Nilcent fic. I think just in terms of quality, this is one of my most beautifully written fics.

4. What work of yours has the most hits? The fics I have with the most hits is Reckless Abandon, but I think that's because it's the only one from this year that had more than one chapter.

5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected? Dress Up As ! I wrote that in like 30 minutes while half asleep and then didn't edit it, so I didn't think anyone would read it at all lol. It's not my most popular fic by any means, but more people read it than I thought would.

6. Favorite title you used? Wilhelm's Frog Addiction because it's so ridiculous. It implies that Wilhelm needs a rehab for frogs, and I think that's great.

28. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year? Oh jesus, that's impossible. I don't think I can choose just one. I can give you one that makes me think "holy shit I can write" though:

Last quarter I had this displeasure of having one of my classes get bait and switched from an English class to a class about using ChatCPT. That means I've technically taken a college level course on ChatGPT, making me far more qualified than I really wish I was on the subject, meaning I can "flex" my knowledge here.

For the record, ChatGPT is fine. There's no such thing as soulless art or writing, that's literally just Nazi rhetoric. The issue with AI is it's a misinformation machine, it'll take away a ton of important jobs, and it'll create a toxic environment for creators if not used for good. (And given the tech industry is using it, that's very likely!)

If you want to know what ChatGPT is actually useful for, it's creating summaries. They aren't great summaries, and I cannot stress this enough, it's not exactly responsible to say you've "read" an article when all you did was feed it to a machine which gave you the bullet points. But, like, as long as your on both sides of the machine (carefully tuning the input and the output) it's mostly fine.

Probably the most interesting assignment in that class was an essay compiling research. It didn't require a ton of work, mostly just comparing sources; you don't even need to have a super fleshed out point. The catch was that the professor provided all the sources—all of which talk about the downsides of AI, which I can respect. These sources were massive, talking 15-30 pages, and all of them full of the scholarly gatekeepy language that academic writing is known for, and there was 25 total. And you needed to use 18. For 7 pages! That is a lot of fucking reading for a college level course on an assignment we realistically had two weeks to do, especially academic reading.

The idea, then, is to not read it. The workload is too high on purpose, so you have to use a machine somewhere in the process to make it faster. So, make the AI read it. Again, this is not some high stakes academic paper, its just combining a bunch of sources together to make something slightly coherent. So if the AI can summarize the points, you can make the essay much faster than if you didn't.

From here, the prof expects you to just copy and paste the writing from the AI, but I wouldn't do that. That isn't what I said was "mostly fine", after all—carefully tuning both the input and the output. A human on both sides. What I'm proposing is to take what the AI said, and to make sure it's, you know, coherent, and make it into something better by actually analyzing it and doing comparisons yourself. I likened it to a "writing calculator". It gets something that's close enough that you can finish the job. But it's never always quite there. And it doesn't need to be! That is literally your job.

You can see where the main struggle with AI right now is, then. People are just taking the output at face value. The final product, push it out, don't check for misinformation, fire your staff, and let the AI do the job. It knows what its doing, after all. But it doesn't. It's essentially just a toddler babbling, guessing what's probably good enough.

One of the best things I've done to help my writing is to just create a summary of what I'm going to write. Instead of staring at a blank page, I'll write a 3 sentence summary of what I want this scene to be. Then, sentence by sentence, I can deconstruct it and add all the details back in. It's basically (totally) an outline, but the key thing is I already wrote exactly what I want, I just have to spice it up and give it life. The hardest part of writing, after all, is staring at that blank page. Anything is better than nothing.

You probably see where this is going, but AI is pretty decent at putting anything onto the page. It's also pretty good at writing pretty shitty. That's where you edit the summary that it's provided and make it something actually worth using. In academic writing, this would look like not letting a single word of it touch the page (also, because that's plagiarism, as its not your words). Instead you take it's thoughts, compare it to the sources itself (you're going to have to at least skim the sources to make sure its right). Don't do this in a high stakes academic writing environment, but lets be real, your 100-200 level courses aren't it. In creative writing, this is essentially just putting a prompt in and using it as a guideline or outline for the writing. Again, not letting its words hit the page.

This approach to writing with ChatGPT shocked my professor, which is weird, because I figured it's kinda the normal way to write something? You wouldn't let someone write your paper, but you would let someone tell you how a source might be useful, even if you need to double check its right. He's even thinking of changing the class to better fit this human on the input and output angle, which is deeply flattering. But it also goes to show just how volatile the market for AI and ChatGPT is right now. No one is actually sure how to use it right, everyone is just guessing.

All this to say, AI is not the devil. It is being wildly misused and no one can deny that, but the AI itself isn't at fault (although it's databases could be sourced a little better than that). It's the people using it. I have no plans to use ChatGPT in the future for, well, anything, but I can't discredit it completely, given it was actually helpful.

Now stop using it to automate things that DESPERATELY need a human in the production line.

2023 AO3 Wrapped!

I had a lot of fun tracking my fic reading in 2022, so... I did it again in 2023! Still fun, still both completely unsurprising and a little illuminating at the same time. I definitely read less fic this past year—only 77 across 12 fandoms, compared to last year's 110—but that's OK. Life happens, and I'm very aware that I'm never going to be a person who reads a million words per month (or 100 books a year). Stats-wise, I can't guarantee that these numbers are completely accurate, but they feel right and that's what counts.

Word Count

971,646 words! Numbers fluctuated throughout the year with one real dead zone (lol @ June - I was busy! sibling got married! played a lot of Zelda!), and I kind of petered out by the end of the year. On the plus side, my brain can handle reading actual books again, which was fun. On the minus side: less fic. Oh well. (Also: May's number isn't entirely accurate, but I had to put rubicon's final word count somewhere. No, I haven't finished reading the complete edited fic yet, but that's when the last chapter draft hit my inbox, soooo there.) Most fics were on the shorter side, unsurprisingly (average length was ~12k); I think rubicon was the only one over 100k. I did read more 50–100k fic compared to last year though, which was nice.

Top Fandoms

My FE3H reading took a HUGE hit this year, falling from 87.3% to... 83.1%. Ouch, how will my faves recover. Really though, this was yet another reminder that although I certainly watched and loved a lot of new movies and tv shows, read new books, played new video games (ok, it was mostly BOTW/TOTK), all things that could conceivably lead me to check out greener pastures, I am still in an extremely monofandom phase in terms of actual fic reading/fandom participation (four years now!). And honestly, I'm fine with that! I'm having fun, blorbos are still my blorbos, there's still a ton of fic I haven't read yet (new and old), and I'm in a nice/quiet/drama-free corner of fandom. Besides, the average fandom lifespan is too short these days anyway. I'm doing my part to break the cycle. :P

I do wish I had the brain space to read a little more widely, though. I was so close to going on a zelink bender after I finished BOTW, but life got busy and it just... didn't happen. Maybe in 2024. Severance and fandom juggernaut SoftBank Next 30-Year Vision tried their best—two fics each! impressive, lol—but the heart wants what it wants, and what it wants is anime chess pieces kissing (and/or killing) each other.

Top Authors

56 individual authors, with the top spot going to...desmodus! which does not surprise me tbh; they write such good fic. Looking at these particular results was an interesting reminder that I'm really not someone who methodically/voraciously reads through an author's entire back catalogue, at least not currently. Like, besides the named authors, there were four more with two fics each and the rest had only one each. Next time, I'm almost tempted to see if I can factor in word count to get a better idea of how much time I really spent reading each author, especially since I might (hypothetically) read multiple forgettable 1–5k fics by Author A, and then a single memorable/meaty 95k fic by Author B that sticks with me for years. Is Author A really more of a "top" author? Not really. That's more work on my part though, so we'll see what happens. (All of this waffling could be solved by making an actual rec list for once, but shhhhh.)

Top Pairings

Surprising absolutely no one, I'm still in sylvix hell. Congrats to None for jumping a couple spots in the rankings, though! A solid showing. I need to get better at tracking platonic relationships, but to be fair, those tags are underutilized on AO3 to begin with (or not used consistently), and I typically—but not always—stick with the main tags chosen by the author.

Also, please note that the ship in sixth place was entirely thanks to alphabetical sorting (it was a six-way tie), but I'm keeping it as is because it makes me laugh/implies some sort of character growth on my part that may or may not exist.

Lol. In my defense(?), Sylvain did drop almost three whole points this year; he couldn't even hit 60%! What kind of blorbo...?! Jokes aside, it's an entirely expected list. My Blue Lions/Golden Deer bias persists, but I'm not sure what determined when I logged "Blue Lions Students" vs. their actual names—probably half laziness, half just following what the author picked. I did love seeing Ask A Manager's Allison Green chilling at the bottom of this list with Bakugo, though. I'm sure she'll be fine. (And god knows Mr. King Explosion Murder and the rest of my top 20 could stand to follow her advice.)

Also pretty unsurprising! I considered cutting my NSFW tracker at the beginning of last year since it's a little redundant, but that never happened. It might come in handy one day, especially if I'm looking through my spreadsheet for individualized recs. I was surprised that the Multi category was so low, but that could be due to inconsistencies in how people tag their fic? And/or how I logged them. Sometimes it means poly, but sometimes it just means that there are multiple kinds of ships in a fic. Either way, it's something to consider for 2024's tracker. Consistency! Let's strive for it! ✨

Tags & Tropes

Also about what I expected, though I was honestly shocked to see Established Relationship ranking so high? And Friends to Lovers so low? What is going ON here. (The former is probably partially due to mikey desmodus's excellent married sylvix fics.) Sorry to Horse Feelings, though; I made a dedicated tag on my google form and everything, but there was only the one fic in the end :(

Etc: Commenting, Rereading, Reccing, and Bookmarks

Commenting: My only real fic-reading "goal" in 2023 was to get my commenting percentage up to at least 50% and...I did that! Just barely, but 51.9% is 51.9%. Obsessive media tracking works!

Rereads: As expected, and pretty in line with last year (with a tiny increase). I'm just not a big rereader in general, though I did do a fair bit of rereading WIPs to prepare for new chapters. (Not sure how I classified those, come to think of it...)

Bookmarks: Also pretty similar to last year (with a tiny decrease).

Reccing: Now this DID surprise me. That "Yes" percentage seems almost absurdly high, jumping from 46.4% to 61%, and my "No"s dropped a ton too (22.7% to 5.2%). Either I got nicer or I just read better fic. :P Leaning towards the former, but probably a bit of both tbh. My one DNF was a longfic WIP that didn't spark joy and was becoming a hateread, which is rare for me - byeeeee.

Takeaways

By now my tracking form has become part of my fic-reading routine (read - track - comment/etc), and I can't see that changing any time soon. Obviously not everyone wants to (or should!) engage with fic this way, and I can definitely see how it might suck the joy out of reading for some people, but for me, it's been a good mental exercise and a really helpful commenting aid. Also, it's just fun. I like thinking critically about media! I like having a place to record my silly little thoughts about the silly little fanfics I read! All in all, I highly recommend doing something similar if you, like me, get a rush from making lists and compiling data, and if you like complimenting people but sometimes need that extra push to actually tell them and post a comment.

Goals-wise... I don't really do those lol. Probably to continue commenting and maybe try to read more widely, but honestly I'm probably not going to change my habits intentionally. Besides, looking at what I've read so far, yes, it's already half Fire Emblem, but also half gen and half F/F with nary a Sylvain in sight*! We got History Boys, we got Haikyuu filk, we got Ingrid and a MILF! Who knows what's around the corner?

🩵 YUGIOH! - Second longest running fascination. Upside!! Made life long friends. DOWNSIDE!! Was my first go at online engagement and in those 10 years so much happened that I still can’t help but feel a little sour. …Though ygo back in the day wasn’t good at tag comments, so I didn’t even know those were a thing for years until I branched out. 5/10. But grows to a 7/10 because i’ve settled into a niche area with so few people that it’s now a silly little club. 💕

🧡 Dragon Ball/Z - GENUINE CHAOS. Started off slow but intensified hard cuz get who got involved while Super was airing??? (I didn’t watch it lol), so the discourse and fighting was at an all time high. I have no idea how I even survived this in retrospect. My slight association with people netted me troll asks and my liking of Yamcha also set me up for those. …and frequent art reposting, and quite a few bizarre interactions. Pretty sure my art and edits have circulated more in latin america than I even know. This was also pre-tumblr purge so the amount of nsfw that got thrown my way is… something. That said!! Made also really good friends 💕 and DB/Z probably desensitized me to longer form discussions. 5/10 for insanity, but 8/10 for good reception and VERY PEAK and generous humans.

💚 Invader Zim- started off fun (mostly irl with my friendo from days of YGO), but quickly devolved into territory that tested my patience. WHY ON EARTH THIS SERIES’ CONSUMERS had such a huge morality high ground base is beyond me. It’s this fandoms fault I learned about certain modern day online discourse terms and what instilled an irrational posting fear for a year lol. Fun at first and there’s super creative and receptive folk (then those people got kicked out) and left the most insufferable beings imaginable. There’s no in between. Shoutout to all 3 friends made who are still peak. 3/10, if I ever finish any remaining projects or decide to bite the bullet and show completed work, i’m not engaging again. The base just skews somewhere I can’t handle. Which is crazy given the ABOVE contenders have, on paper, done so much more.

dbz hardened me but iz weakened me. Which is probably why i need the formers bootcamp back. Don’t think I’m as fearful now, but i’ll still be salty.

💜 Twisted Wonderland - this is a work in progress experience. Will require further evaluation if all of the above experiences haven’t set my standards. Will stay in my corner. So far it’s 6/10 in vibes (they’re much calmer than the last one), tho I question how much of the interest is from what i do vs. what I did for others. 💙 - Sonic The Hedgehog: This is a cheat, I have never interacted with the fandom directly (purely by happenstance, so thankfully no traces exist), but I have been into this since I was a child with no issues. So by default this is the best one. 10/10, didn’t engage, but I do lurk. Though all the stuff I see on tweeter isn’t exactly anything out of the norm for fandoms in general to do, so it weirds me out that people rag on this one for just kinda talking amongst themselves about innocuous things.

“omg this fandom is arguing over QUILL length ughhh can they never be pleased [30 yt videos about this drop]” ngl, this just feels like par for the course junk fandoms do. It really feels no different from DBZ where people go ham about the art style changes and which one is better. Or stupid shit in IZ where they fight about comics vs movie vs show. Like??? The only major difference here is that StH has more people in it (by the millions).

So literally nothing these folk do or say strikes me as anything more serious than what other fandoms already do??? Its just more outsiders see it then churn out content and perpetuate something worse from what’s honestly….pretty tame stuff. Maybe it’s just twitter’s setup given that’s all folk talk about.

some vague reading goals for 2024:

first, an anti-goal: I won't make any goals about how many books I want to read. I want to get into more of my other hobbies in 2024 which means less reading time, so I can't have the pressure of a numerical goal that demands I spend all my free time reading or feeling bad for not reading. I will probably still use the storygraph reading challenge thing because I like using it to track what I read in the year, but the "goal" I set will be completely arbitrary.

reread a bunch of things! i love rereading but have been so laser-focused on reducing my TBR books the past couple years that I haven't done very much of it.

on that note, a few years ago I had an idea for a blog series called "nostalgia rereads" where I reread a book from my childhood/teen years and compare what I remember of it to my adult experience. I read one (1) book for that and then got distracted, but I have been buying a lot of those older books so I'd like to finally do that series.

start a reread of my Tamora Pierce books (though idk if I can finish it in one year, there are 32 of them now including anthologies, and I don't have my childhood stamina for reading a ton of one author's works at once lol)

read more nonfiction. i have a ton of really interesting books on my library list that i just haven't gotten to.

also, use the library more and buy fewer books (i have an overall goal to spend less money in general). I'd like to buy under 70 books next year (I know that still sounds like a lot, but I bought over 100 this year, so...baby steps)

keep my "books i own and haven't read" shelf to under 30 books so i don't get overwhelmed by it again (currently there's 43 books on it, most of them short, so this isn't a Huge reading goal)

read more translated books. I've got Flights by Olga Tokarczuk and There's No Such Thing as an Easy Job by Kikuko Tsumura on my shelf, and a bunch more on my library list.

stop forgetting about my comics and manga, and try and read more of them consistently instead of buying a bunch and forgetting them (hopefully not having a numerical reading goal or novel-specific goal will help with this, because I always feel like I'm "cheating" when I read comics and count them towards a numerical goal, and that's why I don't pick them up.)

on that note, read (reread?) Death Note, as I got the box set at the comic expo this year (I tried to read this series as a teenager but someone had massacred my library's copies and cut out all the pages with violence, sexy stuff, etc.)

read at least 1 Stephen King and 1 Agatha Christie novel, been meaning to get into those authors for years and somehow haven't done it yet.

start keeping notes on each book (probably on my phone) so it's easier to remember what I thought of them. at the end of the year when I make my top 10 or whatever list, I always have a hard time remembering what my true favourite books were bc I can't reference what I was thinking in the moment.

annnnd resurrect my Librarything account. I will need to do this early in the year, preferably after I finish weeding out all the books I want to get rid of. I only use Librarything to keep tabs on what books I own, what editions, etc, so reviews and such will still be on storygraph. There's a not-insignificant chance that the current housing crisis/skyrocketing rent might make me move back in with my parents for a bit, which means almost all my books will be in boxes and I'll need a digital catalog of some sort.

Camp Digimonth 2024 Wrap Up

I had a fun and productive Camp Digimonth 2024! My goal was time based, and I did work on Digimon fan content for at least 30 min per day, with two days off. So in that sense, I crushed it, but to be more specific:

-I completed one drawing for Puits d'Amour and have been working on a second. It's frankly ambitious beyond my skill level, so it's been... Slow.

-Published one chapter of PdA

-Did a ton of great editing work on my upcoming fic, Infinite Possibilities

-Put in a commission request for the cover of Infinite Possibilities, although I am under the impression it will take a while to complete

Of course, I always wish I accomplished more! I would have loved to finish that second drawing and get the next chapter of PdA up (it's a Jyoumi and it dives deep into some interesting stuff). I'm also kind of intimidated by IP and just... How much I'm trying to do with it, and how much more work needs to be done on phase 1. But as long as you aren't stressing yourself out, I think it's best to be pushing yourself with your work. That's how you know you're improving and exploring new things, and not just... Kind of... Cranking out what you already know.

I also hosted a few events over at Camp Digimonth (sprints, create ins) and learned a lot about modding, in some cases by doing the wrong thing first. Thank you all for your patience and support <3 I'm so blessed to have such a kind group. You all crushed it this month! Congrats!

9: Would you say your style has changed a lot since you first started creating? oh for SURE. regardless of what i consider my start bc i used to gif from like 2015-2017 and then i didn't start up again until april of 2023. this time around, i have learned SO much, and i'm sure part of that is just bc of how much gif styles have changed in the last 6-8 years, but also bc i joined a couple gifmaking networks and have gotten so much help through them, found so many resources, and learned tons! to compare, here's one of the sets i was proudest of from Back In The Day. now, it's definitely not horrible, but the coloring and the slow framerate make me borderline homicidal. this one is marginally better, and i remember thinking i was really Doing Something with that typography 😂 here are some of the sets i made early on in my Return to Gifmaking this past April/May. this was one of the first times i'd ever combined multiple gifs into one and girl. what the fuck happened. why are the framerates Like That? what is this typography? i had no business making early l&o gifs 540px wide bc the quality is bad enough at 268px 💀and i think this one is a good example of i got the spirit! the execution just wasn't quite there. i like the main gif with the overlay of the sky, but i'd do the typography very differently and idk if i'd do it in b&w? i could try and remake it tbh, it's been 9 months since i made and posted it.

24: What’s your step by step? How do you organise your editing process? buckle up 😂

make clips of the scene(s) i want to use if i don't already have them

import video frames to layers

action 1: grouping and timing (groups all layers and sets frame rate to 0.05)

delete any extra frames

crop to whatever dimensions i'm using

action 2: sharpening (two smart sharpen layers) + vivid sharpening (i used this tutorial and i usually keep that folder at 30% but sometimes drop it down to 10-15%)

coloring! it depends on what i'm giffing, but i color everything from scratch at least the first time. i save a LOT of my psds, like there's one psd that i use for almost all my tfothou gifs, a couple for hill house depending on the tint of the scene i'm giffing, one for law & order that sometimes needs to be adjusted just a little, one for the good wife, one or two for satc, etc. but they're all psds that i created myself.

typography (if applicable) which almost always involves scrolling through the entire list of fonts just to use one of my go-tos

upload to hellsite (derogatory) and gifsets always immediately go to my drafts, even if i want to post them right away, just so i can make sure i'm happy with everything and try to catch any last-minute mistakes

as for general organization, i'm organized on my computer to a near-ridiculous standard, but it works for me lmao. my psds, templates, and project psds (where i save an entire finished gif if it's for a larger, complex set and then never get rid of them lmao), and all overlays, textures, icons, graphics, transitions, etc. are meticulously organized. my finished gifs are also organized into their own folders.

27: What’s your favourite font to use? in general, monsterrat. i use it for everything in google docs, and it's my fave sans serif to go with serif or script fonts. when i'm using it for giffing, i usually use semibold.

so i used to. hate shuffling. bc i am very very picky about the order of songs i listen to (like when i shuffle i will just . look at the queue and edit it intensely). so i used to make them for a specific order and actually one of my favourite things to do is figure out songs that transition super super nicely into each other oguhoguhgo so making a playlist that is perfect from start to finish is my dream... however rn i have such a big?? music taste??? that the playlists are so long and curating it to be the Perfect Experience would take too much time so now i just add shit and shuffle ofssdlkfd

well that's just kinda unfair the word gold is literally in the title HELPPP but i picture the field that's in the music video (wait help "without looking at the music video" too late for that buddy it's engrained in my memory with how many times ive watched it), like that greenish colour that's what i think of yellowish green

Hey I hope you don't mind me asking this, but do you have any tips on taking up writing? I struggle tons with consistency and perfectionism... I'm trying to get some advice from writers I like, even though their fics' quality also fluctuate. Much appreciated!

Of course I don’t mind! Although not gonna lie I stared at this for a second trying to figure out if it’s a compliment or not sjskwjwjedjejehd.

I think the most important thing to remember is if you don’t make yourself write that fic, you’re never going to get better. You have to practice and hone your skills to figure out what works and what doesn’t. On the most basic level, make sure you have a basic grasp on grammar and formatting! There are lots of awesome guides even just on tumblr for things like dialogue punctuation. Betas are always awesome for this as well.

I’ve struggled with perfectionism in the past as well, but I posted my first Jiara fic (the first real fic I ever wrote and finished to be actually read by people) in 2020 and I’ve let myself relax a lot more since then. You just have to kinda make peace with the fact that nothing you write is going to be perfect. There are plenty of fics of mine I’m not as crazy about but at the end of the day I’m still glad I posted them, because it’s my work and I like to see it out there and usually at least someone will like it! And learn from writers you like, but try not to compare. I get in the biggest slumps when I compare to other people’s writing. Find your style that you like and that works for you. Write things that are fun for you! This is fic and it’s supposed to be fun. They all aren’t going to turn out as the best thing you’ve written, but that’s okay. And since you’re saying you struggle with perfectionism, do not sit there and agonize over what you’ve already written. Make yourself keep going. In fact, maybe don’t even reread any of it until you’re ready to edit it. It does not have to be perfect, especially not immediately, and that’s what editing is for!! Get some words down. Maybe even try word sprints. I’ve written a couple of my fics almost entirely on word sprints (just throwing as much down as fast as you can without stopping for like 30 minutes).

For descriptions, it comes down to preference. I don’t like things super long winded personally, but I enjoy pointing out obscure details and trying to describe things in unexpected ways to make things more memorable. Though sometimes this is something I’m still working instead of sticking to basic stuff! Dialogue is extremely important. For me personally, I read over it as I’m writing it and (if it’s a Jiara fic) if I can’t literally hear Madison Bailey and Rudy Pankow delivering those lines, I know they probably need to be edited, even if it’s just a tiny change. For best work I also recommend not looking at the fic for days before editing it, but I don’t often follow this myself because I’m impatient to get it out of my hands and post.

At the end of the day just have fun with it. Throw it out there and the fandom is always super nice! Plus, posting brings validation, and nothing motivates like initial validation.
