30 day nonhuman challenge
Day 2: Are you out? To whom?
Only to one person. I've had a couple rumours spread about me before, so I'm very careful with who I tell irl. They accept me, though :3
I've kinda told a couple of my other friends? Dropped a couple hints, at least. I don't know if they know for sure.

Therianthropy Day is Friday, November 15, 2024
Therianthropy Day is held every year on the first full moon of November. This year, in 2024, that falls on Friday the 15th. According to NASA, this also happens to be a supermoon, which means it’s slightly brighter than usual.
Why that date, and what is the history of that holiday?
Therianthropy Day commemorates the first Howl, which was held 30 years ago in November 1994. A Howl is when therians meet up together in person. That was a year after the first therians started to meet up together online in November 1993. Therians first proposed commemorating it as a holiday on that date in 1996, in a conversation thread you can still see here. Based on that history, in 2016, Muninn the Raven proposed observing it as Therianthropy Day, though the first posts and community poll about it attracted little attention. I think the holiday finally really caught on in 2021, when I first saw many therians posting on social media about fun things they were doing for it.
What are therians, anyway?
If therianthropy is a new idea to you, or you want to explain it to others who are unfamiliar with it, this essay is a quick and easy to understand introduction to it. It’s available in several languages already, and more translations would be great.
Learn more about the history of the therian community by reading the Timeline of the Therian Community written by @liongoatsnake
What can we do for Therianthropy Day?
I’ve seen therians celebrate it by wearing gear (for example, a necklace with the therian symbol, or clothes with pictures of their species), meeting up with their therian friends, and howling at the moon.
Enjoy some indie games and zines about therianthropy from this hand-curated itch.io collection. Some therian highlights from that: SlumberDragon’s zine of self-care tips for animal folk, @who-is-page’s therianthropy-inspired solo journaling game Wolf In Man’s Clothing, puppygirlbelly’s interactive story I Am Dog(s), and Digital Freegans’s zines THERIANARCHY and BEAST PUNKS.
Are there days for other sorts of alterhumans too?
There are. Alterhuman Day commemorates when Lio of the Crossroads System coined that word on September 26, 2014. Otherkin Day is on July 9, commemorating when the word was coined in 1990, though Arethinn has found that the word’s origin is a little more complicated than that. Plural Events says that Plural Pride Day is the third Saturday of July, and Plural Acceptance Week is that week.

It's the full moon of November you know what that means! And what a marvelous, bright moon it is tonight.
It's therianthropy day, the 30th one! It's 30 years since the first Howl (irl meet-up). I was a toddler then, so had no idea any of this exists. As far as subcultures go we've stood the test of time. Of course it has, the concept of animal people is as old as the hills. Therians are just a modern day iteration of it.
It's also 10 years, right about now, since I first interacted with the therian community. And I'm glad to have found you all. You really helped me out during a strange time.
As Autumn is already relevant to me personally for this reason, I find it rather fitting that Therianthropy day falls this time of year too! Not only that, but it's 15 years (give or take a week or 2) since I first learned about my theriotype. I didn't call it that then, but the connection was certainly there from day dot. Impossible to ignore, evidently. That's why I remember.
Anyway, happy therianthropy day!

Welcome welcome! I wish you a fruitful journey and hope you have a lot of fun on the way!
I started this side blog specifically to explore myself and my own kintypes haha! Something that was recommended to me for a start was doing the 30 day nonhuman challenge! (There are a lot of entries in the tag by the same name!)
It really helps with self reflection and opens you up to the community for a good conversation, though I myself, didn’t get much interaction at all. Hopefully that is helpful! Looking forward to seeing you around :)

28/06/24 - Climate and therianthropy
Figured I'd make this my first real post on this blog since it's something I've been thinking about lately, and I want this blog to become a place where I can dump my thoughts around being therian/otherkin.
Lately I've been thinking about climates and biomes- more specifically, living in a place where the climate there doesn't match the climate of where your theriotypes are from, as well as how climate affects me in general.
(Full blog post under cut)
Without giving too much about my location away, I live in Southern Canada, where we're cursed with cold winters and humid summers. (At least, we used to have very cold winters, not sure how accurate that description is anymore with climate change.) Despite having lived with these harsh winters for all my life, I despise winter, and I've always wanted to live somewhere with winters that were mild and had no snow for me to deal with.
Usually I'd attribute this to just personal preference- there's plenty of people I've talked to from Canada who agree with me and also hate the winter. I'd also attribute part of this to my disabilities, namely my physical and psychiatric ones. Seasonal Affective Disorder is something I very much struggle with, and it's at it's worst over the winter when I'm forced to stay inside because nobody in their right mind is going to want to do anything in -30°C weather. I also have very severe chronic pain, and this is usually at it's worst during the winter, especially when it's snowing due to barometric pressure changes. For these reasons, the warmer seasons are much more bearable for me.
But it only just recently occurred to me that being therian could also be linked to my dislike for the winter season, considering the fact that I'm a vampire bat and zebra- both of which come from the warm places of South America and Africa. Although I've never been to either of these places while in my human body, I frequently visit the Southern United States where the weather is hot all year round (or, at least hot by my Canadian-borne standards,) and I never really understood why the weather there makes me feel more at-home than my real home, until I started seeing it through the perspective of being therian. Of course these places feel closer to home than where I currently live, because in a way, they are actually closer to my real home.
That being said, however, it's not like I particularly enjoy being caught in humid weather either. Unfortunately, I don't get to enjoy the bomby hot summers of southern Canada very much either, because they just so happen to be a massive trigger for my chronic fatigue, which ends up taking over my entire life during the time where the weather is warm. Plus, thanks to climate change (again,) our spring and autumn seasons are becoming shorter and shorter, leaving me with just 4 months out of the year where I feel somewhat okay physically.
If moving to the Southern United States was safe for me to do so as a disabled member of the LGBT community, I would just for the fact that I would feel so much closer to the homes of my theriotypes- at least for the climate down in the South. It's becomes so easy to feel out-of-place as a bat and zebra living in a place that snows and one who can't always enjoy the summer to it's fullest, that I wish I was able to be in the body of my theriotypes who may actually be able to better tolerate the heat than my human body can.
I hope that one day I can bask in the warmth again and have it not make me feel ill.

unhinged 30 days of otherkin challenge: day four
If your kintype suddenly opened their eyes, what would they be looking at?
For my white tern theriotype, probably with the open ocean hunting for food or in a tree just hanging out.
For my harbor seal theriotype maybe a glacier or nice beach to rest on before going back to the water.
For my dhole theriotype probably a steppe with lots of shrubs and dead grass.

30 Day Non-Human Challenge, Day 8: Do You Believe There Should be Non-Human Pride? What Do You Imagine it Being Like?
Prides, cons, luncheons, I'd love to see and be apart of any kind of irl otherkin event! I want to see people in full kin gear and people with nothing but a button to represent their kintype. I want to talk to spiritual otherkin, psychological otherkin, and those who feel like they're neither. I want to hear people howling, I want to share awakening stories over a coffee, I want to give people little trinkets, and harmonize the opening themes to the shows various fictionkin are from.
Feeling isolated out there in the real world seems to be a common sentiment in this community. I'd love to see that lessened some.

Very very very very very very very VERY long WIP part 1 post of my experience with all my kins
reader beware its very fucking long and did i mention that it was long and going to get longer than it already is because im still working on it?
~~Theriotypes~~
Iberian Lynx
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name - Jasper (chosen) Sex - Male (he/him)
I had an extremely traumatic past life as Jasper, where I died at 4 years old by a hunter stabbing me in the back with a large knife. I suspect this was the reason I'm terrified of knives in my human vessel now.
He was my first discovered theriotype, and I discovered him after I had a dream shift as a lynx, prowling after a rabbit. I woke up, looked at my paws, which were back to human hands, and I cried. Because I was no longer a lynx. It was very distressing to 11 year old me. I googled 'Why do i want to be a lynx' and discovered therianthropy. I did more research and confirmed, yes, I was a lynx therian. Ooh, boy, was 11 year old me in for a ride of dysphoria and anxious typing.
European Fallow Deer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name - None. Sex - Male (my pronouns)
I am a fallow deer. I am a fallow deer stuck in a human vessel with about 30 other beings that aren't supposed to be there. It is scary.
He was my second discovered theriotype. I don't shift to them, but I know that i am it. It is me. We are the same thing and yet so different. Shark is graceful and swift, while I am a pathetic meat-sack of human flesh. And i'm going to move on now before i turn this into a vent q-q
Snow Leopard
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name - Violin (chosen) Sex - Female (she/her)
She is me. I am her. Same as the fallow deer. We are the exact same thing and we are not different at all. I am a predator that creeps silently through the mountains. She is a predator that creeps silently through the mountains. There is no difference between us.
Like the fallow deer, i rarely shift to her, but when i do, the dysphoria that comes after is like a wave. Our bodies are so different and it pains me. She is one of my more recently discovered theriotypes, and i found her out after watching a dinosaur documentary, seeing the dinos in the snow and feeling shifty, like i should be there, right then and there.
Clouded Leopard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name - Bubblegum/Gum/Bubble (given) Sex - Male
I had a past life as Bubblegum, where i only lived to 2 months old. I was born and raised in a zoo, probably somewhere in north america, where the keepers named me. I don't remember much since i was a cub when i died of an unknown illness.
I shift quite often, and i like it! i get to jump around and play with the keepers when i dreamshift, it feels a lot like age regression! Overall my favorite theriotype to shift to :3
German Shepherd
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Vax (given) Sex: female
I don't know if i had a past life as her, but i know i am a german shepherd and i am a guard dog. When shifted i get more aggressive, violent and stressed out when people come near or hurt my chosen person i'm looking after, which is usually my friend Alex (not legal name), Beni (not legal name) or Solar (not legal name), but sometimes when talking with my online friend and they have had a bad day, i get shifty and want to help.
I only shift when triggered, which, as stated before, is when people come too close to, hurt or threaten one of the people listed above. It is usually stressful and i don't like it.
Flat coated retriever
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Chomper (given) Sex: male
I'm pretty sure i had a past life as Chomper, as i remember being a hunting dog and diving into lakes, rivers and streams to fetch the water birds that my Handler shot dead. It was a good life and i always got pets and treated well.
I only ever have phantom shifts or dream shifts, sadly dream shifts are rare and very nice.
Pitbull
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Captain (chosen/given) Sex: Male
Like with Vax, i don't know if i had a past life as Captain or not, i just know that i am a pitbull who is a Psychiatric Service Dog trained for helping someone with depression.
Again like with Vax, shifts are only triggered when someone is venting to me or says they are struggling, i shift, and then i feel an urge to help them get over it. Usually i cant though, as my instant response is to lick them and lay on their chest until they feel a bit better.

Note
i'm doing some soul searching rn with regards to my nonhuman identity and i'm a bit confused about the terminology.
theriomythic and fictotherian especially confuse me because i thought therianthropy specifically referred to animals and not fictional or mythical creatures and there are terms like otherkin and fictionkin etc to describe those for example.
is this just a result of communities evolving differently and independently coming up with terms to describe very similar stuff? is it just a matter of preference?
Firstly, Daski has created a great essay (or if you prefer, here is a recording of deir’s panel covering the same points) explaining how the concept of therianthropy being Earthly animals only arose within the community.
But to summarize, it’s a little bit of collum A and a little bit of collum B.
The online therian community and the otherkin community arose separately around the same time period in the early 1990s and had little, if any, interaction between them for many years.
In the therian community, people identifying as weredragons and other mythical creatures actually appeared really early on while the community was still forming. (There was even an infamous, werepontiac on AHWw.) Also, in the past, the therian community did not make a distinction between people who identified as natural Earthly animals and those who identified more as an actual werecreature, which mixed things up even more. Yes, a large majority were Earthly animals, but there were non-Earthly animals in the community as well. The early therianthropy was a lot more concerned with shifting and related experiences than what form the shifting and such took.
Over in the early otherkin community, there is some evidence there were people who identified as animals there as well alongside the non-Earthly beings and creatures. Yes, the early otherkin community appears to have been more geared towards or popular too people who were mythical but how the otherkin community defined itself wasn’t exclusive to mythical beings or creatures.
Even once the two communities started to become aware of each other, people more or less kept to whatever community they vibed with more or had discovered first.
However, in the late 2000s, people began pushing the idea that therians were strictly Earthly animal only and the discourse grew from there. The terms theriomythic and fictherian actually arose because of the rise of people trying to strictly define therians as being Earthly animals only.
Either way, in present day with both communities overlapping so significantly, label choice between therian (or theriomythic or fictherian) and otherkin comes down to personal preference and such, more or less.
That is a brief summary of it all, anyway. A lot has happened in the online communities in 30+ years.
