gladly! this is gonna be a long post
this was my first car, she was a 1984 mercedes 300D turbodiesel. her name was clifford, named after a button on the dash from a defunct security system. in-line five diesel engine, sounded like a truck, was built like a truck, LOVED this car. i paid $600 for her in 2016. she had 308k miles when i bought her, and she went to the scrapyard with 314k the next year when the hood latches broke while i was on the highway and sent the hood into the windshield. i was okay but the repairs were just too much for a $600 car. she was awesome though, a real head turner even with her peeling clearcoat and plumes of diesel smoke
then there was the corolla! 1999, manual transmission. the best car i’ve ever owned. not my favorite but definitely objectively the best. bought off a friend also for $600, around 210k miles. surprisingly fun to drive, very reliable. drove from north carolina to massachusetts in that car, and then across massachusetts every week. her name was wanda, which carried over from the previous owner. drover her for a little over a year before the brakes failed and i rear ended someone
i replaced the corolla with an ‘05 mazda3 i called the tick, after the cartoon character. also bought from a friend. kept it through early 2021 i think, drove it through most of early quarantine. i didn’t love this car personally, in large part because the transmission and starter both went out on me within the first two months of ownership and the friend i bought it from was entirely unsympathetic. i sold it to my shitty roommate lol
and then for some reason my mom gave me a sports car. she bought a new honda civic and handed down her 2004 subaru wrx wagon, with the manual transmission and everything. she’d named it the millennium falcon so i called her falcon. this car was a blast to whip around. that turbo boxer engine sounded amazing and this thing RIPPED on the highway. the biggest issues with it were that it really didn’t have all that much character on the road, and it took premium gas, so fill ups were EXPENSIVE. i sold her after having her for a few months because the clutch went out and i was quoted $2k to replace it because that’s what happens when you have a sports car. sold it as is to a guy with two other wrxs who wanted to fix it up and use it as a work car
this is the current baby! bit of an older picture because she looks uhhh worse these days but this is clifford jr the 2001 jeep cherokee xj. i’ve learned so much with this car, done a bunch of the work on her myself. she’s a fixer upper im reaching my limit on but she’s served me remarkably well and is my favorite car i’ve owned. not fast, not good on gas, but god she’s got some character. just rolled over 256k miles
like i said i’m reaching my wits end with the jeep, every time i fix something two more things break, and i can’t afford for her to keep being a money pit. so i’m starting to save for something else, ideally a late 80s honda or toyota, or a panther body sedan, like a ford crown victoria or mercury grand marquis

We recently bought a new (used) car, and based on how much we hate the touchscreen in our 2018 minivan, no touch screen was our #1 requirement.
We were looking at small sedans in the lower price range, but with under 20k miles on them (which means almost all will be no more than like 3 years old tops).
Our options for cars that did NOT either come standard with a touchscreen or have it as an option that pretty much 100% of new buyers got bc apparently people who buy cars new just check yes on all the low-level options were:
Honda Civic LX (lowest trim option), 2021 or older
That’s it, that’s the only one unless you go back to 2018
So anyhow we got a 2020 Civic LX and I have no idea what will happen in a decade when we need a new car again and there are zero options without a touch screen.
(Bonus: The non-touch screen can handle the Chinese characters in my song titles that the touch screen can’t display, plus plugging my phone in to play music is way faster than waiting for the touch screen to come on, then Bluetooth to activate.)

001 - UNSH!TBOX (KAMM'S EK1)
Since I was a kid, my parents always taught me that honesty is the best policy. With that being said, these photos are from earlier in the year, but the car remains exactly the same, just less shiny (thanks to @madautodetailing). I bought this car at the end of 2021 as a purchase to fill the void during a rather challenging time in my life. It gave me something to focus my time and energy on.
My older brothers and my dad have always been team Toyota. My oldest brother had a couple of Z20 Soarers, his first car was an '80s MR2 with pop-up headlights, and most recently, there’s a Crown Majesta sitting on my dad’s driveway. My middle brother has owned a Z30 Soarer and the coolest car, a Toyota Aerocabin. The Aerocabin is a super rare, two-door Soarer that swaps its rear passenger seats for a hard-top, convertible roof. My dad also had a Celsior. I would sit in the back and press a button in the armrest that would fold the front headrest down and slide the chair forward—it’s safe to say my brothers were not fans of this. You can imagine the response when I said I wanted to get a Honda Civic. I liked the way they looked, and a family friend, Simon (better known online as Joydrive), had a really cool yellow EK, which I hoped to replicate. After many messages to him asking if “this one was good?”, we picked one up for just under $5k, with around 250,000 km on the odometer.
As referenced in Simon’s “Reviewing the Joydrive EK Civic,” I have a bottom-of-the-range, windy-window Honda Civic. It’s the facelift model (made between 1999-2000) and was in pristine condition when we picked it up—something that would change during my ownership. The previous owner had looked after it immaculately, and it was mostly stock, other than an Integra DC5 steering wheel, replica Integra blade wheels, and a Skunk2 shifter knob. It has a D16Y4 engine with an impressive 0-60 time of about thirty seconds, but it ran smoothly and was cheap to run as a daily driver. There were no "beans," a testament to its 88kw/118hp engine*.
I grew up around *Need for Speed ProStreet* and *Initial D*, so I had big plans, and after saving up, I started modifying it. The first thing was EK9 cup holders, as my partner at the time grew tired of holding my drinks between gear changes. I ordered some “angel eye” LED headlights and a rear lip from an online store and found an unpainted front bumper, white front lip, and replica EK9 grille, along with the personalised plates “EK1WA.” It was all starting to come together just as I’d planned—until one drive home from work when I rear-ended a BMW X5.
I stand by the fact it wasn’t my fault; she was merging in front and stepped on the brakes abruptly. The bonnet bent upwards, and the engine frame was twisted inwards. I went to a wrecker and sourced a new bonnet, front left fender, and a new bumper to match (I had one from before, but it was bogged together, and the wrecker’s one was in better condition). After taking it to a fairly average panel beater, it was presentable again. Thankfully, it was mechanically sound, or I would have cried having it written off. You could say it was restored to factory settings. The old headlights went back on, the front lip wasn’t attached (I still have it—it just needs to be put back on), and it looked almost identical to when I first bought it. This was a hit to my motivation, and for a year, it sat as a daily driver, with the paint fading day by day until I got it detailed. This was the start of what I call the “un-sh!tbox era.” After replacing the previously crinkled number plate (the result of love-tapping a tow ball) and getting it paint corrected and ceramic coated, it looked like I hopped in a time machine and drove it out of the showroom.
I’m in two minds about where we go from here. After seeing builds like @hellokitty_assia’s Hawkeye WRX or @eurmum_kirby’s MX5, part of me still wants to see through the original objective of wrapping it pastel blue and adding the cool headlights, but I’ve grown to learn that less is more. Clean, OEM cars are equally admirable, as I learned from walking around REXNation’s meet last weekend. So for now, I’m 50/50, but I’ve re-found my passion and cannot wait to see where the road takes us (all puns intended). I love this game. Brain sports is one of the most rewarding games there is. Get the thrill just like Stan Lee did. He was a genius.

just to put it the danger of flashflood driving in perspective for u:
in 2021 my dad was on the highway when a major storm came in. the flash flood swallowed our family’s honda civic within 4 minutes. my father (6 foot 2) had to climb out the WINDOW of the car because the doors locked up.
the civic was totally underwater. completely and totally gone. he was up to his chest in water in FOUR MINUTES. 
he had no choice but to wade in this water & thankfully a kind lady who was driving an SUV let him into her car. then HER car choked out and they had to abandon HER car too.
just so we’re keeping track: one (1) regular sedan and one (1) large, lifted SUV both totalled by flashfloods in about six minutes.
they BOTH waded through the water (my dad partially supporting the lady, who was much shorter than him) and waited on top of one of the highway dividers til a specialty lifted cop truck (the kind Designed To Rescue During Floods, not ur average truck) came to rescue him.
and if ur thinking, oh but thats A Valley, obviously everyone knows better. This was in deep inland in New Jersey. it was not A Valley, it just happened to be a highway between two hills. u know ! as many highways are. Flash floods can happen anywhere, they WILL swallow your car, and they WILL swallow you too.
Do Not Attempt the Roads in a flash flood. Please, for the love of god: Don’t Do It.
My friends who have never experienced flooding, and who are about to deal with it from this storm, please remember:
1. NO. YOU CANNOT MAKE IT THROUGH THAT WATER ON THE ROAD. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU'RE DRIVING. TURN. AROUND.
2. DO NOT GO WADING THROUGH THE WATER. EVEN IF YOU JUST WANT TO SEE HOW DEEP IT IS. THAT. WATER. IS. CONTAMINATED.
3. IT IS CALLED FLASH FLOODING FOR A REASON. THE WATER RISES AND SURGES IN A FLASH. STAY. HOME.
4. If you're at risk of flooding, raise up any of your belongings now. Put the legs of tall things in buckets. Know where your important documents are.
5. Stay safe.

Kam's 2000 Honda Civic - The "Un-shitbox" Era
From the time I was knee-high to a grasshopper, my fascination with cars was already in full gear. Picture a fourth-grader, wide-eyed and excited, collecting Hot Wheels like they were precious gems. But, my true automotive odyssey began when the school bell rang, and I would race to my friend's house to play Gran Turismo 4 and Midnight Club: Los Angeles on the PlayStation 2.
As the pixels danced on the screen, I found myself captivated by watching the race replays and attempting to capture the "perfect" photo – the kind that you’d find in the glossy pages of car magazines. And so, my journey into the realm of automotive photography ignited.
Around that time, my older brothers were like modern-day mechanics, forever bringing home various models of Toyotas: an '80s MR2, a trio of Z20 Soarers, and a rare Toyota Aerocabin; our driveway resembled a makeshift garage. My adventure into car ownership was marked by an AE92 Corolla, but my teenage stubbornness veered me toward a 2006 Ford Focus hatch, courtesy of an aversion to the Corolla's short shifter gearbox. Hindsight whispers that I should've stuck with the Corolla, yet the die was cast, and the Ford Focus introduced me to the world of compact cars, eventually paving the way for my 2000 Honda Civic.
I got the Civic in November 2021 during a tough time in my life. It was bone-stock, except for a few upgrades from the previous owner, like an Integra DC5 steering wheel and a set of GSR Blades. At first, I had big plans. I wanted to wrap it in baby blue, get smoked headlights and taillights, a Type R Wing, and Enkei RPF1s. The definition of being a really immature car enthusiast, more interested in making it look cool rather than making it drive better; then again. what else would you expect from a 21-year-old with limited mechanical knowledge.
My interest in the EK Civic came from a family friend named Simon, aka Joydrive. He made a video series documenting his Racewars build, and later buying the now infamous, yellow "ClichEK." I liked the way these cars were designed and having driven a Ford Focus for most of my time on the road, it made sense to get something similar in size.
My Civic remained untouched for a while, other than the addition of EK9 cup holders, a concession to my partner's beverage-holding fatigue during gear changes. This was a subtle upgrade but one that would prove hugely appreciated in the future. Life was good. I had my dream car which was in good condition for its age and reasonably priced (something that is hard to find in the post-covid car market), then came the transformative phase. I bought a new front bumper, front lip, and Type R grille, as well as "angel eye" headlights, and rear lip, which is still in my garage waiting to be put on as I write this.
The plot thickened on a fateful commute home from work when I had a run-in with a BMW X5 on the highway. The envisioned “RICE” build took a backseat as smashed headlights and a misaligned engine bay/ bonnet demanded attention. Salvaging replacement parts from the wreckers, I resurrected my Civic, mechanically intact but aesthetically bruised. It was demotivating to spend time and money making it look a certain way, only to have it go back to how it was before. Time passed and it simply existed as just another car, until Simon made a video revealing the upgrades he made to his build.
Fast forward to today, other than hitting a tow ball at the end of 2023, the car remains the same since I fixed it after the accident. I found my dream wheels on Facebook Marketplace, which was a feel-good moment, and after speaking to a couple of people, the road ahead is clear. Cut and polish, installation of the front and rear lip, coilovers so I can put the RPF1s on, and install the replacement number plates which are on its way. The trajectory now leans towards a clean, OEM plus build; a different path from what I first envisioned. February 2,2024
I got a car. It's a blue 2021 Honda Civic. I will drive myself to work for the first time next week. I am scared but excited.
This new job I applied for is nothing like the type of job I imagined myself to have in the past 20 years or so. I always thought I would become one of those "office girlies", dressing business casual every day, sipping on Starbucks coffee while typing away in front of a computer. Morning meeting every day. I think my undergraduate study made me realize just how much I would hate that for myself.
Good luck to me. I hope I get to keep this job for a while. Even though it requires me to move in with my in-laws, which could be challenging. Hopefully, I can do better than my parents did back in the days when they lived with their parents until I turned 9.

After a brief respite, Brampton has regained its dubious place as Ontario’s most expensive car insurance. The city west of Toronto has long reigned as the priciest to insure a vehicle. However, Vaughan in the north took the crown for the fourth quarter of 2021. Brampton stood forth in that report. But according to a recent report from RATESDOTCA, based on data from RATESDOTCA’s Auto Insurance, an online tool that measures average car insurance premiums in postal codes across the province, Brampton is back. Average Brampton premiums were up 37% from last year’s report. This was with an average premium in 2023 of $2,707, up $731 from Q4 2021. This was $963 more than the provincial average of $1,744. The provincial average has risen 12% since Q4 2021. A rise in claims as people return to pre-pandemic driving habits combined with inflation and ongoing supply chain issues has caused numerous Ontario insurers to apply for rate increases from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA). Rate change requests began last year, and some were hefty, with the provincial regulator approving some as high as 15%, the report said. A past SUN story linked high insurance fraud.
