2020 Chevy Suburban Redesign, Engine, Price
2020 Chevy Suburban Redesign, Engine, Price– It appears that the business fails to focus on the massive changes within the body in the brand new 2020 Chevy Impala F45. Based on rumors, one of the most reasonable measures the company will work is by offering the vehicle along with increased stability ranges. It may be said that their objective is always to create the functions and assistance to…

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 vs. 2020 Ford Expedition XLT Comparison Test
A Carmaking 101 lesson for you: Full-size SUVs with hefty price tags selling in large numbers equals big profits. How big? I don’t have the specifics, but in general terms, Chevrolet sells around 100,000 Tahoes every year, and Ford moved nearly 90,000 Expeditions in 2019. These full-size family haulers, which are mostly endemic to North America, are based on existing pickup trucks, so the development costs are less than they would be for a standalone product.
Both jumbo SUVs start at more than $50,000. So we’re talking billions of dollars in revenue. Add in the additional 50,000 Suburbans that Chevy sells in a year, plus the GMC Yukons, and Cadillac Escalades—let’s not forget Lincoln Navigators—and pretty soon we’re talking real money. My point is, getting these sport utes right is paramount. To customers, sure, but especially to stockholders. With all of that in mind, how does the all-new 2021 Chevy Tahoe stack up against the 2020 Ford Expedition?
A little background, if I may. I drove the then brand-new 2018 Ford Expedition in November 2017 and had this to say: “For way too long, Ford allowed what should have been a perennial cash cow to rot out in the pasture. The old Expedition wasn’t horrible or anything. It was simply not competitive with what Ford’s big rival was selling. Ford has flipped the script. The Expedition is now the class leader, no ifs, no ands, and no buts about it.” In other words, I was seriously impressed. Nearly three years later, the bowtie brand’s answer to Ford’s salvo is here.
Our technical director, Frank Markus, wrote an illuminating first test review of the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. However, we requested another day with the Tahoe so we could let our photo team go to town on it. As fate would have it, we just so happened to have an Expedition XLT sitting around the office. This comparison was essentially preordained. Now, in fairness to Ford, the XLT trim level is not as pricey nor as off-road as the trail focused Z71 example Chevy lent us. Yes, we should have had an Expedition FX4 (the test results presented in our chart were obtained from a 2018 XLT FX4). Thus is the nature of having a single day to execute a comparison test that just falls in your lap. MotorTrend en Español editor Miguel Cortina and I took that fact—as well as the $11,655 price difference—into account as we evaluated the two big utes.
Design: Inside and Out
If you’ll allow me to quote myself (again), when I reviewed the 2018 Expedition I said: “From the side the new, all-aluminum Ford looks like the current Tahoes, and Suburbans… I actually think the Ford looks better…For whatever the reason, Ford design kicks out products that look like they come from other carmakers.” The problem with aping design language used by others is that when said others move on to something new, your product looks like their old one. That’s happening here.
Miguel adds, “Its design, though only three years old, hasn’t aged well. Even with the black accent package, the Expedition doesn’t stand out as the Tahoe does.”
Yes, the Chevy’s sheet metal is polarizing. Social media opinions seem to be evenly split between “rad!” and “heinous!” I fall on the “rad” side of things; I think the new Tahoe looks beefy, modern, and tough. The Ford is still a handsome large vehicle, but it looks a generation behind the Chevy. I also think the Z71 package looks extra sweet, but I know I said that’s not part of this comparison. Back to the Ford—it’s still a handsome SUV, but it’s never going to be a design icon. The Chevy has that chance, but we’ll have to see how it ages. How important is exterior design to a full-size SUV shopper? Not nearly as important as what’s inside.
Inside, the Chevy is a mixed bag. For example, the large, legible, touchscreen is bigger, better-looking, and easier to use than what Ford offers. Miguel says that Ford’s infotainment screen doesn’t compare to the Chevy’s.
A bit hyperbolic—as we’re comparing them—but I think it illustrates how good that part of the Tahoe is. However, we both thought that the rest of the Chevy’s controls were worse than the Ford’s. Miguel says, “The switchgear is not outstanding, but Ford spent more money to create thoughtful designs, used a better plastic quality, and therefore the interior feels and looks better.”
There is a more premium feel inside the Ford, and this is an issue that’s been plaguing GM’s trucks for a few years now. Ram and Ford have fancy innards; the General (generally) does not. This is being addressed with the new Escalade, but why not make Chevy owners feel special?
We were split on the transmission controls. Miguel likes the fact that the column selector is gone, whereas to me there’s little that screams “Detroit” and “freedom” as loud as pulling a stick slightly forward and click, click, clicking into gear. That said, Miguel found the push/pull-buttons hard to use, whereas I didn’t mind them. That said, for an item an owner will touch daily, Chevy could have made the buttons out of something nice.
One could—and many will—argue that the real point of these boulevard behemoths is interior space. As such, Miguel and I spent a great deal of time climbing around the middle and third rows. The Ford remains spacious, with plenty of room in the second row and good enough space back in the third. Air vents and USB ports abound. That said, we both found it a little easier to get into the Chevy’s third row than the Ford’s. The second-row entertainment screens in the Chevy are quite terrific and much larger than what Ford offers, though as Miguel points out, “Would you rather have those screens over two iPads (maybe  given the price? One for every seat!). I think having Netflix on an iPad and being able to download movies and cartoons for the kids is more convenient over the rear seat entertainment screens.” As a parent of a 3-year-old addicted to Give a Mouse a Cookie, I can say Miguel is totally right!
Miguel is also fairly tall, around 6-foot-1, and he fit even better into the way back of the Chevy than he did the Ford. Both third rows work for adults, but if you’re looking for a reason to go with one over the other, here you go. Also remember that both come in bigger, longer wheelbase sizes, the Suburban and the Expedition Max. With the third rows up, neither SUV offers an abundance of cargo room. With the third-row power-folded flat—both of ‘em do it—there’s plenty of space for stuff.
Engines and Transmissions
The Ford comes packing the brand’s ubiquitous EcoBoost engine, in this case a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 that produces 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Said EcoBoost spins a 10-speed automatic that was mechanically developed by both Ford and GM, though each company does its own software tuning and production. The Chevrolet features a  carryover 5.3-liter naturally aspirated V-8 that’s good for 355 hp and 388 lb-ft of twist running through the same transmission. Both vehicles can be had as rear-drive, AWD, or 4WD (meaning with a low-range transfer case).
There’s no other engine for the Ford, though you can opt for a stronger state of tune—400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque—which comes standard on the top Platinum trim level. Remember, when in the Lincoln Navigator, this same mill spits out 450 hp. If you go for the top-spec Chevy High Country, you get the 6.2-liter V-8 that’s good for 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. For now, you can’t get the big V-8 on lower trims. You will soon be able to get GM’s most choice Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel (277 hp/460 lb-ft of torque) in most Tahoes, but that longer engine and its intercooler don’t package in the higher chin that improves the Z71’s approach angle.
Let’s Talk Power
One would think that with the decisive power advantage, the Ford would feel much quicker than the Chevrolet, or at least a little quicker. Crazy thing? It doesn’t. I’m going to chalk this up 100 percent to savvy transmission tuning. The Tahoe is perpetually in the correct gear, and as a result the transmission does what a transmission is supposed to do—multiply the engine’s torque to produce forward thrust. In my review of the new Suburban, I (wrongly) assumed that it had the big 6.2-liter V-8. That’s how phenomenal the Tahoe’s transmission’s been programmed. As Miguel said, “My favorite part is how well the engine and the transmission work together—the gearbox is swift and precise, downshifting exactly when it needs to without any delays.”
But that’s not to say the Ford isn’t as studly. From Miguel: “The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 continues to be a sweetheart. How such a small engine can propel such a big truck is unbelievable to me. And it does it well. The EcoBoost rarely feels stressed and delivers power in a very linear way.” In fact, to 60 mph, the Ford crushes the Chevy by 1.2 seconds, 7.4 seconds for the Tahoe versus 6.2 for the Expedition.
If I may add: Yes, but who brake stands a giant SUV? I found that if you stomped on both, the Chevy had an acceleration advantage until the Ford’s turbos spooled. Then, the much torquier Expedition then went much quicker. However, driving these two the way 95 percent of their owners will drive them 95 percent of the time, they felt like equals.
I’d tip this one to Chevy though, because doing more with less power and torque show great software engineering. Because the Expedition has been out for well over two years, that means Chevy’s boffins had that much time to work their transmission magic, and they did. I wish we were able to tow with these two. We’re aware that a sizable portion of owners will be towing with either truck. Also, when I drove the Expedition back in 2017, I was able to tow back to back with a then-current Suburban. To quote me after towing with both, “Wow, man, it blew the Chevy away.” I have a hunch that Chevrolet was keenly, if not painfully, aware of reactions like that. Moreover, I’ve towed with both the current F-150 (not the soon to be released one because no one has) and Silverado—the trucks that the Expedition and Tahoe are based on, respectively—and both are excellent.
Ride and Handling
The big news is that after two generations of Ford’s big three-row having an independent rear-end, Chevy not only bit the bullet (meaning spent the engineering money) and followed suit but added optional magnetic dampers and air springs. The result, and I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say this, is the most sophisticated suspension system of any body-on-frame vehicle in the world, full stop.
As it pertains to ride quality, while the Ford is good, the Chevrolet is incredible. From Miguel, “The MagneRide shocks with air springs are worth every penny, keeping the cabin serene and peacefully free of big vibrations. I can’t speak more highly about the combination, especially the magnetic dampers—we’ve seen them before, and it seems like they keep getting better and better on every new iteration. Every Tahoe owner should check this box.” Totes agreed. Like I said, Chevy is now offering one of the world’s great suspension setups on its three-row people mover. What a world.
On the other hand, Miguel likes the way the Ford steers better. “I really like the way this truck handles. The steering is much better tuned than the Tahoe’s—here you feel tons of feedback of what’s happening at the wheels.”
Huge caveat time. As I had driven the Suburban the day before, I accidentally stumbled upon the knob that allows you to switch from Normal mode to Sport to Off-Road to Towing. Said knob is unlabeled, and actually—because it contains the button to raise the suspension height—is mislabeled. Knowing our drive loop through Palos Verdes and San Pedro takes an hour, I challenged Miguel to figure out how to put the Chevy in Sport mode. He couldn’t find it! To contrast this with the Ford, if your right arm is resting on the center console, the first thing your hand touches is a big, clearly labeled “Drive Modes” button. Did Miguel and I jump on a conference call with Chevy engineers where they told us that this is being addressed? Yes. Anyhow, I probably should have called Miguel halfway through and told him how to engage Sport mode, because it really does change things—like steering. I preferred how the Chevy Tahoe drove, regardless of mode.
Which Big SUV Should You Buy?
I suppose I’d forgotten how damn good the current generation Ford Expedition is. After spending a day in the larger Suburban, I suspected that the Tahoe would mop the mean streets of PV with it. That wasn’t the case. The Expedition remains a fantastic big SUV. However, we’re giving the win to Chevrolet. Miguel says, “The Tahoe also has this sort of X-factor—I find it appealing from every angle, getting attention even while it’s parked.” The Ford does blend into the background a bit.
After spending the day driving the two back-to-back, that’s really what it came down to. Both are seriously thought out, expertly engineered, and rather excellent full-size, three-row SUVs. But the Chevy showed up with an edge. An attitude. A swagger. A certain something extra that we both liked better. Charm of the new? Perhaps. Miguel concludes, “The fact that the Expedition is losing its appeal so quickly is a bit concerning. Sure, it’s modern and still drives great for an SUV this size, but its aging quickly. Ford should be prepared to roll out meaningful changes to the Expedition if it wants to lead the segment again.” Well friends, that mid-cycle refresh is about a year away. Until then, we’re voting Chevrolet Tahoe.

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe
The 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV, essentially a shorter version of the Chevrolet Suburban. Three rows of seats are standard, with seating options for as many as nine people. The 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe comes in three finishes: LS, LT, and Premier. Moving through the three finishes brings more standard features and available options packages, ranging from appearance to power station options. Thanks to a large number of available upgrades, the 2020 Tahoe can be customized to suit different needs, from something more work-oriented to quite luxurious. The rear and four-wheel-drive models are offered, including the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, GMC Yukon, and Toyota Sequoia.

The full-size 2020 Tahoe is a strong candidate for buyers who need a large SUV to tow or transport many people with minimum fuss. The Tahoe has 51.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, though it drops to just 15.3 cubic feet when the third row is up.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Chevy SUV
The Tahoe is also loaded with technical features, such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hotspot, up to seven USB ports and six power points. As far as safety features are concerned, forward collision warning and the low-speed automatic emergency brakes are included on LT and Premier finishes.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Features
Features like engine shutdown, three-zone remote climate control, and front seats make it more than just a large work van. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also here, and the available Enhanced Driver Alert package adds a range of useful driver tools. The LT trim provides leather upholstery and other luxury features inside, but the luxury package further enhances the LT and adds more driver aids. If you want to venture off the highway and off the beaten track, the Z71 off-road package, unique to the LT, is equipped with the Tahoe with off-road suspension and off-road tires and under protection.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Interior
Inside, the first two rows of the Tahoe are excellent in terms of comfort, space, and access, and even the third row is reasonably accessible. But the back floor is high because of the solid ash suspension that eats up the legroom of the third row. The cargo space is also compromised by the high rear floor to the point where larger or heavier objects may need a helping hand. Fortunately, visibility is quite good in all directions thanks to high windows and relatively thin pillars. The exterior mirrors are simply too small for the Tahoe, but with standard rear parking sensors and a backup camera, it’s not much trouble to park. The climate control always has a handle on the cabin temperature. Outside of temperatures above 100 degrees, the Tahoe or any of its inhabitants did not get annoyed, and although the blower could be a bit loud at full speed, this setting was rarely necessary.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Engine
Engine choices include a 5.3-liter or 6.2-liter V-8. Both have cylinder deactivation to save fuel when power is not needed. The 5.3-liter V-8 pairs with an automatic six-speed, while the 6.2-liter V-8 gets an automatic 10-speed. The LS is equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 engine (355 horsepower, 383 pounds of torque) and a six-speed automatic transmission. The Premier trim is at the top of the Tahoe range and is the only way to get the customizable Magnetic Ride Control suspension and even more comforts such as ventilated seats. It’s also the only way to access the 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp, 460 hp) and the accompanying 10-speed automatic transmission. If you choose the Premier Plus edition, the Tahoe gets dressed to nine and includes the 6.2-liter V8. That powerful V8 is available on other packages, but especially in the 6.2L Performance package, which is new to 2020.
2020 Chevrolet Tahoe Safety
The Chevrolet Tahoe in 2020 gets mixed results from the federal government but does offer optional active safety features, one leg up from its bakkie siblings. The 2020 Tahoe comes standard with seven airbags, including a central airbag that prevents front-seat occupants from crashing into an accident. Locking brakes and stability control are also standard, while the LT and Premier finishes are standard as active safety features and the 2020 Tahoe LS trim is optional. These include automatic emergency braking, active lane control, automatic headlights and an alert system for the driver. Customizable cruise control is also available on the Premier trim. The Tahoe receives four stars overall from the NHTSA, with benefits and side effects reaching five stars. However, a three-star overload rating keeps the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe from being the fifth overall star.

2021 Chevrolet Suburban Prices: $265 Per Extra Inch of SUV
Need a full-size SUV that’s as big as or bigger than a Manhattan studio apartment? Great news—the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban starts at $52,995 in base LS trim, which is both exactly the same price as the pre-update 2020 Suburban and far cheaper than any New York City apartment. Chevrolet’s pricing for the new ‘Burban (get the full picture here) isn’t official quite yet. The prices included here were highlighted by researchers at CarsDirect.com, who acquired an early dealer order guide for the 2021 Suburban.
The site also reports that the next-level-up LT trim starts at $57,795, the “sporty” RST starts at $61,095, the off-road-prepped Z71 at $63,195, and the fancy Premier will run $66,595. Four-wheel drive adds $3,000 to every Suburban price listed here. A trusty 5.3-liter V-8 that offers 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque is standard. A 3.0-liter Duramax turbo diesel inline-six option is in the works, but you can’t have that now and will have to wait it out for the price. All powertrains are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
But wait, there’s more! If you are looking for a top-shelf people and stuff hauler with a bow-tie badge, the 2021 Chevy Suburban High Country starts at $76,595. It trades the 5.3-liter used elsewhere in the lineup for a standard 6.2-liter V-8 that’s good for 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. As with the smaller, also redesigned Tahoe (the Suburban’s shorter-wheelbase sibling), the Suburban’s pricing is essentially the same as before. Also as with the Tahoe, the Suburban’s MSRPs place it nearly in luxury vehicle territory, at least on the high end of the lineup—even though it’s larger than similarly priced SUVs such as Mercedes-Benz’s GLS-Class and BMW’s X7.
Like the smaller Tahoe, the 2021 Suburban receives a thorough update that includes an independent multilink rear suspension, a longer wheelbase, and most importantly—more room for passengers. The Suburban increases by 5.8 cubic feet to 181.9 cubes for a roomier ride. The cargo space behind the third-row seats grows 1.8 cubic feet to a total of 41.1 cubes for all your loot.
Inside, all trims get a standard 10-inch infotainment screen and twin 12.6-inch media displays are available for the massive rear seats to keep the kids happy. If you like what you see, Chevy is discounting the 2020 models now or you can wait for a shiny new 2021 model to arrive this summer. Either way, we’ll be updating this page in the future with final prices when Chevrolet reveals them officially.

Chevrolet releases 2021 Tahoe SUV base prices
Chevrolet released its base prices for the 2021 Tahoe full-size SUV, showing slight increases and a price decrease in one model.
The Tahoe LS will start at $50,295, up $1,000 from the 2020 model.
The Tahoe LT starts at $55,095, up $800.
The Tahoe Premier starts at $63,895, down $100.
The prices include transportation and destination fees.
All three models will have a standard 10-speed automatic transmission and new independent rear suspension. They also offer 10 more inches of third-row legroom, 66 percent more cargo behind the third row and 30 percent more maximum cargo.
U.S. sales of the Tahoe fell 2.8 percent to 101,189 vehicles in 2019, but the nameplate still led the large SUV segment, according to the Automotive News Data Center.
Chevy faces growing competition in that segment from the Ford Expedition, which finished second with sales of 86,422 vehicles — a surge of 58 percent over 2018, according to the Data Center.
The Tahoe holds a 7.2 percent share of the overall U.S. SUV market.
Chevy said four packages will be available for the 2021 Tahoe and Suburban SUVs: LT, Z71, Premier and High Country.
Monte Doran, a Chevrolet spokesman, said pricing for Suburban models are expected to be about $2,700 more than "comparably equipped" Tahoe models.
Chevrolet expects 2021 model-year regular production to begin this spring, it said in an email to Automotive News.

Chevrolet Brings Tech to Its New 2021 Suburban and Tahoe SUVs
2021 Chevrolet Suburban Tahoe rollout Dec19
DETROIT – America’s oldest vehicle nameplate, the Chevrolet Suburban, advanced to its twelfth generation Tuesday night with significant changes. Switching to an independent rear suspension (IRS – no, not the tax people) lowers the rear floor for more cargo and legroom. More driver/safety assists were added, technology was enhanced, and the cockpit gets up to five big displays. As Chevy adds more sensors that create more data, GM upped compute power so the vehicle is capable of processing 4.5 terabytes of sensor and infotainment data per hour, a 5X improvement. For those who want an improvement in mpg, a diesel will be offered along with two gasoline V8s.
Chevy also rolled out the Suburban’s regular-large-size sibling, the Chevrolet Tahoe that is the better seller. The Tahoe is now 211 inches long where the extra-large Suburban is 226 inches. The same features set applies to Tahoe. These are 2021 models that ship mid-year 2020. Expect to see the same changes applied to the GMC variants, the Yukon and Yukon XL, in the near future.
2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is the normal length for a full-size SUV at 204 inches, or 17 feet, exactly. The Suburban is 224 inches with a big cargo bay but can be awkward to drive in tight spaces.
30 Safety Features on Tap
Chevrolet cites 30 safety and driver convenience features standard or available. It cites a restraint system with driver inboard seat-mounted side-impact airbag, an HD rear vision camera, automatic emergency braking, automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, rear parking sonar, automatic headlamp control, and hitch guidance for trailering. Optional are an HD surround camera system, rear pedestrian alert, lane change alert with slide blind zone alert (including trailer), lane departure warning/lane keep assist, and a head-up display (HUD) with a huge 15-inch perceived size.
The safety features spill over to convenience features for trailering enthusiasts: nine camera views, stored trailer towing profiles for a big trailer/small boat trailer/work trailer, trailer tire pressure monitoring, and blind-spot detection that includes the trailer’s length. Chevrolet did not mention a cool camera feature in the General Motors stable of technologies, the transparent trailer rear camera view, which mounts a rear camera on the back of the trailer, then stitches the view inside the vehicle’s rear camera and puts it the center stack display as if the vehicle camera had X-ray vision.
The cabins of the Suburban and Tahoe define the term “spacious.”
Six Trim Lines: Choices, Choices
Center stack display is now 10 inches.
The Suburban and Tahoe allow the buyer to have a near-infinite set of model variants (trim lines), engines, paint colors, and options. The lineup runs, from around $50K to $70K, plus options and packages, this way: LS, LT, RST, Z71 (off-roading), Premier, and High Country. The Premier focuses on safety and technology, Chevy says:
Premier adds features such as Magnetic Ride Control, navigation, an eight-inch-diagonal reconfigurable instrument cluster, premium Bose 10-speaker audio system, 12-way power vented and perforated front bucket seats, power releases for both rows of rear seats, heated steering wheel, Safety Alert Seat (vibrating seat warnings from the vehicle sensors), Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Front and Rear Park Assist and 20-inch wheels.
Some of the safety features are offered on lower trim lines. It will be interesting to see if Chevy makes more of them standard to keep up with higher levels of standard driver assists on less costly vehicles not in the Suburban/Tahoe competitive set. For example, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata sedan – the polar opposite of the Suburban – makes every imaginable driver assist feature standard on all but the entry trim line, which lacks only blind spot detection. On the flip side, the near-universal presence of onboard telematics and mayday calling (OnStar) on GM cars for two decades may have convinced makers such as Hyundai to do the same.
Upscale models can have magnetic ride shock absorbers and air springs. On a comparison ride at GM’s Milford, Michigan test track, prototype Suburbans felt more composed on bumps and expansion strips than its nearest competitor, the Ford Expedition with its uplevel suspension, which didn’t have air springs.
Rear-sear occupants can get 12-inch infotainment displays. Placed on the backs of the front seats, they can be seen from rows two and three.
Five Big Displays Including Rear Infotainment
Big SUVs are meant for long-distance cruising, and passengers want to be entertained along the way. The Suburban/Tahoe can have up to five big displays. The standard 10-inch center stack display “is the largest in its segment,” Chevy notes, although on a car this roomy, a 12-incher will be needed to match the competition shortly. An 8-inch instrument cluster LCD (multi-information display) is optional. So, too, are optional dual 12.6-inch rear-seat infotainment displays that have HDMI connectors to accept or cast media. Rear seat passengers can use the infotainment system to look up destinations and send them to the navigation system.
The fifth display is the big HUD that is truly useful for providing lots of information – lane departure, following distance, speed, speed limit – without getting in the driver’s sight. The 15-inch diagonal refers to the perceived size of the display as if it were a physical display at the end of the hood.
The Tahoe and Suburban accounted for 42 percent of full-size-SUV sales last year. The midsize, unibody Ford Explorer, 5 inches shorter than Tahoe, is a better seller, while the Tahoe and Silverado are more profitable per vehicle sold.
Chevy, GM Own the Big SUV Business
Shifter is now buttons next to the center stack display.
The market for big SUVs was about 400,000 units last year, 2.3 percent of the 17.3 million vehicles sold. It would be higher but for the price. A lot of people would love something that roomy inside, were it not for the price that can push $80,000, or even more for the Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator.
The stretched Suburban (15 inches longer than Tahoe) is the one to get if you plan to haul the luggage a family of up to eight would want to stow on long trips. Although Chevrolet notes that the independent rear suspension is a big deal for cabin comfort. The seats in the third row no longer sit just a few inches off the floor, and there’s more luggage room as well. It’s just that 226 inches is a lot to get into a perpendicular or parallel parking spot or fit into a garage.
In conjunction with a slightly longer wheelbase (116 to 121 inches on the Tahoe) and length (204 to 211 inches on Tahoe), rear legroom jumps from 39 to 42 inches (a lot), third-row legroom increases from 25 to 35 inches, and cargo room behind the third row goes from 15 to 26 cubic feet. On the Suburban, wheelbase climbs from 130 to 134 inches, length from 224 to 226 inches, legroom increases 39 to 42 and 35 to 37 inches, and cargo capacity goes from 39 to 41 cubic feet or, with all seats folded, from 122 to 145 cubic feet. That’s also a lot.
The Suburban/Tahoe duo are both based on the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck introduced in summer 2018. The Silverado sold 586,000 vehicles last year, second only to Ford F-Series among the 280 vehicle models on the market last year. The full-size pickups and SUVs are Chevy’s most profitable vehicles, so a lot of attention goes into keeping them up to date.
