Volkswagen AG is an automotive giant that has far reaching tentacles across the globe. The German automaker has a full stable of brands, some of which are household names, others are less known. Many readers might be hard-pressed to name all of them.

Britain’s Bentley and Italy’s Lamborghini were added to the company’s portfolio in 1998, along with the then-dormant French brand, Bugatti.
In 2019, Volkswagen experimented with its first sub-brand: JETTA, complete with its own dealer network, but only in China.
The Volkswagen Group is headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany, but many of its brands center their operations elsewhere, while reporting back to the mother ship. Volkswagen Group is most known for making passenger vehicles, but it also owns heavy truck brands MAN and Scania, the latter once part of the company that also made Saab cars, as well as Ducati motorcycles, which is owned by Audi via Lamborghini.

Volkswagen
Volkswagen is the mainstream, high-volume brand of the Volkswagen Group, based in Wolfsburg, and famous for creating the Beetle.
VW was founded in 1937 in Berlin by the German Labour Front at the direction of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, who wanted an affordable “people’s car”—in German, a Volkswagen. All rejected the Beetle, and Hirst appointed a German engineer, Heinz Nordhoff, to run the plant as its own entity in 1948.
The Volkswagen brand entered the U.S. market in 1949 with a whopping two units sold the first year, but the Beetle’s easy drivability, and its high quality and reliability, which had been dramatically improved under Nordhoff’s guidance, quickly turned a cult following into mass market appeal. The success of the Beetle cajoled Detroit’s Big Three into building their own low-price compacts in the late 1950s.
VW struggled for years to find a successor to the Beetle before the water-cooled, front drive Golf took off in the 1970s. And even though the Golf became VW’s heartland car—and in its eighth generation is still a segment benchmark—many other VW models missed the mark in the US, offering too few amenities at a premium price point compared with rivals. There were times when it appeared the Volkswagen brand would pull out of the market altogether.
Today the lineup is full with the VW Golf, Jetta, Passat, and Arteon on the car side and the VW Tiguan, Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport crossovers. The focus going forward is electric vehicles, starting with the 2021 Volkswagen ID4.
Audi
Audi is one of VW’s luxury brands and operates with some independence from its parent from a head office in Ingolstadt, Germany.
The Audi name was first registered in 1910 by German engineer August Horch—who had founded an automaker in his own name in 1904—and is derived from a latin translation of Horch, which means ‘listen’ in German. The logo of four rings represents the four automakers that merged in 1932 to form Auto Union—Audi, Hord, DKW, and Wanderer.
Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz in 1965, and the brand was relaunched with the return of the Audi name after 25 years and the introduction of the Audi F103 series.
Initially Volkswagen did not want Auto Union to operate as an independent entity—VW just wanted the capacity of the plant in Ingolstadt. Auto Union engineers resorted to developing the first Audi 100 in secret and the car impressed VW brass and was launched in 1968. A year later Auto Union merged with NSU Motorenwerke, known for motorcycles, small cars and rotary engines. The new company, Audi NSU Auto Union AG, was incorporated Jan. 1, 1969, with Audi was a separate brand.
Volkswagen introduced the Audi brand to the U.S. market in 1970. In 1986, the company name was shortened to Audi AG and headquarters were back in Ingolstadt.
Though introduction of quattro all-wheel drive was well received—the 1980 Audi quattro Coupe, which featured an all-wheel drive system developed from the Volkswagen Iltis military vehicle, was set the template for modern rally cars—recalls for reports of sudden unintended acceleration, perpetuated by a fraudulent 60 Minutes report, almost killed the brand in North America in the ‘80s.
While Audi initially provided Volkswagen with engineering skills it did not possess in-house, its impact on the company proved far greater: It nurtured the career of one Ferdinand Piech, who joined Audi from Porsche in 1972 when it was decided no member of the Porsche family (he was a grandson of Ferdinand Porsche) should have a role in the day-to-day running of the German sports car maker.
Piech became chairman of Volkswagen Group in 1993, and was instrumental in the aggressive acquisition of brands—and development of halo products such as the Golf 4, Audi R8, Bentley Continental, and Bugatti Veyron—that helped transform the company into the global powerfouse it is today.
Audi was stung by scandal again in 2015 as part of the larger Volkswagen emissions testing scandal, but today is a well-known and respected brand of sporty luxury cars and crossovers. Following the overall mandate for the Volkswagen Group, Audi also is expanding into electric vehicles, starting with the Audi  E-Tron.
Porsche
Porsche is a brand synonymous with high-performance sports cars. The German brand is owned by the Volkswagen Group and based in Stuttgart.
Porsche was founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931 and initially helped develop vehicles for others, like the Volkswagen Beetle. It was not until after World War II that Porsche started building cars under its own name, starting with the 356, which borrowed many design characteristics, including its rear-mounted air-cooled four-cylinder engine, with the original Beetle. The 911, developed as a roomier, more powerful, more comfortable replacement for the 356, but powered by a rear-mounted air-cooled engine, appeared in 1963 and over eight generations has become not just the brand’s lode star, but one of the world’s most iconic sports cars.
Voting-share ownership by the Porsche and Piëch families have made the corporate structure a bit of a soap opera over the years, made no easier when Porsche and Volkswagen each both tried to take over the other in the early ’00s. A denouement was arranged to merge their manufacturing operations—and there were other complicated arrangements concerning who owned what at different corporate levels, but it amounted to Porsche AG being owned and run by Volkswagen AG in 2012.

Lamborghini

Bentley is a brand of Bentley Motors, a British maker of luxury vehicles that is part of the German Volkswagen Group. Headquartered in Crewe, U.K, Bentley has been part of VW since 1998.

In 1997 Vickers decided to sell. BMW was comprehensively outbid by Volkswagen AG, the deal closing in 1998. Volkswagen boss Ferdinand Piëch presumed he’d bought all Rolls-Royce and Bentley assets, but the fine print revealed that Rolls-Royce plc, the aerospace business, actually owned the Rolls-Royce name and the logo, and had merely licensed it to the car business. Worse, it then decided to sell the license to BMW, its partner in commercial jet engine manufacture.
Volkswagen had no leverage as the engines in both the Rolls-Royce Seraph and Bentley Arnage were supplied by … BMW. From 1998 to 2003, when BMW had completed development of the all-new Phantom, Volkswagen built Rolls-Royce cars for BMW.
Among its latest models are the Bentley Bentayga (its first SUV), the Continental GT, and the Flying Spur. While most of its vehicles are assembled in Crewe, Bentley uses some VW plants in Europe, as well.
Bugatti
This ultra-high-performance, French luxury brand was purchased by Volkswagen in 1998. Ferdinand Piech urged Volkswagen to buy the rights to produce cars under the Bugatti marque as a logical follow-up to the acqusitions of Lamborghini and Bentley. In 2000, Volkswagen officially incorporated Bugatti Automobiles as a wholly owned subsidiary.

The Volkswagen Group took a majority and controlling stake in SEAT in 1986. When Volkswagen took full ownership of SEAT in 1990, the Spanish brand became a wholly owned subsidiary.
SEAT was the first non-German marque for the German conglomerate. It also provided greater inroads for VW’s other brands to make inroads in the Spanish market.
The SEAT name dates back to 1950, founded by a Spanish state-owned industrial holding company, Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo (S.E.A.T.) and it quickly became the country’s largest supplier of cars. Fiat was a key partner for many years, at times viewed as controlling the business. The relationship with Fiat ended in 1982 after nearly 30 years.
The high-performance motorsport division SEAT Sport was renamed CUPRA in 2018.

Aging Volkswagen Tiguan to Stick Around As the Tiguan Limited
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan sports fresher, roomier digs with the latest technology, but that’s not enough to rush the current Tig off to the used-car lot. Instead, Volkswagen is extending its life as the Tiguan Limited.
Despite a now decade-old design and tweener dimensions that slot it between subcompact and compact crossovers, the Tiguan saw record U.S. sales in 2015 and again in 2016, when it topped 43,000 cars. Given this unusual upward trajectory for an aging model and the market’s vigorous demand for SUVs, Volkswagen of America will stick with the old Tiguan for the 2018 and 2019 model years.
Hendrik Muth, VW’s senior vice president for product marketing, said the Tiguan Limited will be aimed at more budget-minded buyers and those who don’t want the new Tiguan’s third row and considerably larger footprint. The newly announced six-year/72,000-mile warranty on the 2018 Tiguan and Atlas won’t apply to the Tiguan Limited, however. Pricing hasn’t been announced.

Surprising to most, the Tiguan has an eight-speed automotive transmission and is sold in either front-wheel or Volkswagen’s “4MOTION” all-wheel drive. 
As far as mpg goes, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has estimated the FWD at 22 mpg city, 29 highway and 25 combined. For the AWD version, those figures come in at 21 mpg city, 29 highway and 24 combined.

10 Electric Vehicles to Watch
This was the year that Tesla’s lock on high-end all-electric vehicles began to break, with Audi and Jaguar sending electric S.U.V.s out into the world. They joined more workaday E.V.s from Chevrolet, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Nissan.
So 2019 was, finally, the year of the electric vehicle. Right?
Sales of electric autos were double those from the year before, but they were still dwarfed by their fossil-fuel-powered brethren. With a slew of new models promised for next year and beyond, and with charging station infrastructure still being built out, the tipping point for electric autos is still in the future.
But automakers are betting big on that future, and how quickly the industry takes off depends not just on choice but on a shift in customer expectations. Hurdles to a breakout include higher prices, the end of federal tax subsidies for some models and a paucity of charging stations — even though the industry argues that most charging will be done at home at night. That, especially, can be a deterrent given electric cars’ shorter range.
Even so, as Mark Reuss, the General Motors president, recently wrote, “just as demand for gas mileage doesn’t go down when there are more gas stations, demand for better range won’t ease even as charging infrastructure improves.”
That infrastructure is growing, nonetheless. More than 21,000 locations in the United States, with some 57,000 hookups, offer Level 2 charging, which can add maybe 20 miles of range per hour. These are fine for parking at the office or overnight, but useless on a road trip.
For charging to roughly 80 percent of a battery’s capacity in about a half-hour, there are 3,300 DC Fast Charging locations with 12,000 charge points. Many of these are proprietary Tesla chargers, however.
A traditional car, of course, can fill up at 168,000 gas stations across the country in the time it takes to buy a Slim Jim and a Coke.
The evolution toward electrics has given carmakers freedom to play with design — picture Tesla’s jagged-edge pickup — while others are sticking with tried-and-true sedans and crossovers, simply swapping out the drivetrain.
Here’s a look at some of the electric vehicles that are just reaching the market, will soon be available or are expected to arrive in 2021.
Audi e-Tron Sportback: A four-door coupe version of the full-size Audi e-Tron sport utility vehicle, introduced last spring, the Sportback is expected to be available this spring. Designed to look and handle like traditional Audis, the e-Tron models will feel familiar to anyone who knows the brand.
The all-wheel-drive e-Tron S.U.V. charges to 80 percent of its 204-mile range in 30 minutes with a commercial fast-DC charger. Improvements in aerodynamics and battery efficiency should modestly increase the Sportback’s range.
BMW iX3: BMW will start production of its electric S.U.V. next year at its plant in China. The rear-wheel-drive vehicle is expected to provide 286 horsepower and a 273-mile range, according to the European test cycle, which is more optimistic than its American equivalent.
Ford Mustang Mach-E: Ford enlisted its Shelby designers to create a traditional-looking electric S.U.V. that would echo its iconic Mustang sedan. Its first version, a 332-horsepower all-wheel-drive model, will be available late 2020, with a 459-horsepower GT version expected 18 months from now.
The biggest changes, beyond fuel, are inside. A new version of the much-criticized Ford Sync connect service will feature over-the-air updates. Artificial intelligence will monitor a user’s habits and suggest appropriate actions. For example, it may ask if you want to call your mother at a certain time if it notices you typically do that each day.
Natural language comprehension will allow users to state commands in various ways, such as “Take me to Santa Monica” or “I want to go to Santa Monica.”
Mileage will range from an expected 210 to 300 miles, depending on the model. In the “frunk,” or front trunk, the space usually occupied by an engine will offer space designed to hold ice for tailgating; a drain plug will be included.
Mercedes EQC 400 4Matic: Originally expected to arrive in the States next year, the first purpose-built all-electric Mercedes will be delayed until 2021, the company recently announced. It blamed demand in Europe.
The all-wheel-drive vehicle, starting around $70,000, will feature its screen-based MBUX infotainment system now used in a number of new Mercedes models. To optimize the vehicle’s range, the MBUX system can calculate the most power-efficient routes and direct drivers to high-speed charging stations. Time to charge to 80 percent will be about 40 minutes with the fastest chargers.
Porsche Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S: The “entry level” version of Porsche’s first electric vehicle, the 4S will be available this spring, starting at about $104,000. (The imminently shipping Turbo costs about $151,000, and the Turbo S is $185,000.)
The two current models — available with 522 or 562 horsepower — will accelerate from zero to 60 miles an hour in 3.8 seconds. The Taycan has a range of just over 200 miles, and it is one of the fastest-charging E.V.s around: A DC fast charger will juice it to 80 percent capacity in 22 minutes. The company expects that by 2025, half of its sales will be either fully electric or hybrid models.
Volvo XC40 Recharge: To cut costs and time to market, Volvo is equipping its existing XC40 S.U.V. with an electric drivetrain. Expected at the end of 2020, for “under $48,000” after incentives, this is the start of a Volvo product road map that will bring out one new E.V. model each year.
Over-the-air updates will be available for all vehicle features. The “completely rethought” infotainment system is based on the Android operating system, with Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google Play app store embedded within the vehicle so they work without a phone. The 408-horsepower engine is expected to provide 240 miles of range. A high-speed commercial charger will fill the XC40 to 80 percent capacity in 40 minutes.
Byton: Distinguished by many enormous wraparound screens, this Chinese-built S.U.V. will be sold in the United States, at a starting price of $45,000, beginning in the second half of 2021. Sales in its home country will start at the end of next year.
Drivers can alter the screen display to account for whether the vehicle is moving or not, and whether the driver or passenger is watching. Artificial intelligence is combined with subscriptions to popular music and video services, and linked via facial recognition, so it will know your favorite artists. If the driver allows, the vehicle will have access to calendar events; knowing that you’re finishing up your spin class, the system could cool the car before you arrive.
Available as a 225- or 300-mile range version, the Byton will be sold directly and through dealers, with its first company store to open in Los Angeles by the middle of next year.
Canoo: One of several hopeful start-ups, Canoo plans to sell its namesake model at the end of 2021. Unlike several established marques, Canoo has taken advantage of the lack of an internal combustion engine to rethink the look of a vehicle.
The symmetrical Canoo is positioned as “an urban loft on wheels,” the company says, with the rear seats arranged more like a sofa. To increase interior space, Canoo eliminates the traditional engine compartment and its protective firewall. The use of “steer by wire,” an electronic rather than a mechanical system, eliminates the need for various mechanical components, also allowing for more freedom in the placement of the steering wheel.
Infotainment will be provided through a smartphone connection.
The Canoo, with an anticipated 250-mile range, will be available only through subscription, the price of which (undisclosed as of yet) will cover the vehicle, registration, license and insurance. The subscription can be canceled or rolled over into another model when available, at any time.
Faraday Future: Once left for dead after a splashy premiere three years ago, a planned Las Vegas factory that never got built, and a Chinese founder and funder who went bankrupt, the company is back with a new leader, the former head of Byton; new funding; and a rethought vehicle.
Where once Faraday Future advocated the “bring your own device” approach to infotainment now promoted by Canoo, the current version of the large S.U.V. will sport 11 screens in its ultra-high-end FF91.
The company claims that the FF91 will accelerate from zero to 60 in an astonishing 2.2 seconds (although it’s not clear why anyone would need to), and cost $150,000 to $200,000 when it comes out by September. If there’s demand, the company can build up to 15,000 units annually in a Hanford, Calif., plant that’s smaller than the ambitious one it abandoned in Las Vegas.
The company says it will make money at that volume by selling its hardware and software to competitors. Plans for a smaller, more affordable FF81 exist, and the company hopes to enter “preproduction” by the end of 2020.
Volkswagen ID4 Crozz: VW’s first purpose-built E.V., this compact S.U.V. is due in the States by the end of 2020, priced in the mid-$30,000s after tax credits. This will be followed in 2021 by a larger, Passat-size S.U.V., the Space Vizzion, and then in 2023 by the Buzz, Volkswagen’s electric version of its iconic bus. The vehicles will at first be imported and eventually built at the automaker’s factory in Chattanooga, Tenn.
About the same size as VW’s Tiguan, the ID4 will have a range of 200 to 300 miles. Navigation commands will be shown in a windshield heads-up display, with arrows overlaid on the screen to show when to turn.

Here’s a break from the usual 2019 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) programming – a European car that Malaysia is yet to, or will never, get. The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is essentially a longer version of the second-generation Tiguan that was launched in our market in March 2017.
At 4,701 mm, the Allspace is 215 mm longer than a regular Tiguan, and its 2,787 mm wheelbase is 106 mm longer. It’s not easy to spot this added length at a glance, and that’s a testament to good design – VW designed the rear doors to be longer, and raised the bonnet section above the radiator grille to achieve pleasing proportions.
The added length is used to fit in two more seats. With all 5+2 seats erect, there’s 230 litres of storage space; not much, but fold down the third row and you’ll get a generous 700 litres (to the window line). Pull the latches on the boot wall to fold the second row seats and the cargo area grows to 1,775 litres.
Bigger body aside, the Allspace is all Tiguan. Under the hood is a 1.4 litre TSI engine with 150 hp and 250 Nm of torque, available from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. The petrol turbo engine is mated to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, and the combo is good for 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds. Top speed is 202 km/h. There’s no 4Motion, so this SUV is front-wheel-drive.
As for kit, the well-equipped Allspace includes Vienna leather seats, leather on the steering and gear knob, foldable tray tables for second row passengers, an eight-inch touchscreen head unit, Active Info Display digital instrument panel, powered front seats (memory for driver), 18-inch “Nizza” alloys and LED headlights/DRLs/tail lights.
Also on are heated wing mirrors, DCC adaptive chassis control, Kessy keyless entry and push start, powered rear hatch, cruise control, three-zone climate control and an electronic parking brake with auto hold. Available in five colours – Candy White, Deep Black, Indium Grey, Reflex Silver and Silk Blue – the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is reasonably priced at Rp 533 juta (RM157,206), undercutting our five-seat Tiguan Highline.

Volkswagen Could Add a Jetta R to the Lineup
The 2019 Chicago Auto Show proved to be a good place to catch up on some Volkswagen product plans and news.
VW used the show to finally show the 2019 Jetta GLI which ups the power considerably from the conventional Jetta. We are talking 80 more horsepower by replacing the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the 2.0-liter turbo-four from the Golf GTI. The GLI offers 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with a choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential.
For stopping power there are Golf R front brakes in a car described as the most advanced GLI to date. Styling is conservative with touches like a red accent stripe across the grille, body-colored rear spoiler and of course the GLI badging. A strong crisp character line runs through the door handles and it rides on 18-inch wheels.
Built in the Puebla, Mexico, plant, the GLI goes on sale this spring in base and Autobahn trims. Pricing has not been announced.
There will also be a 35th Anniversary Edition—a short run of 2,400 units for the 2019 model year, with a black roof, unique wheels and a black rear spoiler. Appealing to young, affluent male buyers, the special edition should sell out quickly, said Derrick Hatami, vice president of sales and marketing for Volkswagen of America.
Jetta dates back to its 1978 start in the European market and the GLI dates back to 1984 when it was an appearance package, manual transmission, and upgraded wheels and brakes. VW has sold 18 million Jettas to date.
Since VW introduced the current Jetta in May 2018, there have been calls for the GLI. It traditionally only represents about five percent of Jetta sales, said  Hatami, but it is key to VW DNA.
Will there be a Jetta R? “Never say never,” said Hatami, stressing the pains VW has taken to make the Jetta a key member of the performance club that includes the Golf GTI and Golf R. There could be some overlap of GTI and GLI but he sees potential for more volume from the larger Jetta versus the smaller hatchback.
VW remains committed to the sedan market, a segment Hatami said is still 4 million units strong in the U.S.
How about that electric Microbus? It is still a few years out, said Hatami. But an electric Beetle is not in the plans right now.
Still in the works is a new compact crossover smaller than the Tiguan—and not on the Tiguan platform. It is due in 2021.
And nothing concrete yet on a VW pickup for the U.S. as talks continue with Ford. Ford will engineer and build the next-generation Amarok on the Ford Ranger platform for markets outside North America. Hatami said any truck for the U.S. must be a true VW, true to the brand, and there is nothing in the cycle plan at this point.
VW has shown the Tanoak unibody pickup concept based on the Atlas and it has moved to the feasibility study phase. It might not be able to overcome the challenge of how to offer a $20,000 pickup version of the $30,000 Atlas.

The Tiguan third row is a feature that you won’t see with most vehicles. Luckily for a future owner, this comes standard on all front-wheel-drive models. You’ll experience reduced cargo space with the third row engaged, but without it, the Tiguan 2020’s storage space matches closest to a Toyota RAV4. 
From its streamlined LED highlights to sleek LED taillights, the Tiguan also features a moon roof. This is an appealing addition to the vehicle, making it feel less and less like a soccer mom’s daily driver. 
Body lines of the vehicle make the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan seem slimmer than it is without sacrificing extra space.
Under the Hood
Although it’s a compact crossover/SUV, the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan features a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter in-line-four. This equates to 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. 
Surprising to most, the Tiguan has an eight-speed automotive transmission and is sold in either front-wheel or Volkswagen’s “4MOTION” all-wheel drive. 
As far as mpg goes, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has estimated the FWD at 22 mpg city, 29 highway and 25 combined. For the AWD version, those figures come in at 21 mpg city, 29 highway and 24 combined.
