La Volkswagen Passat R-Line 2020, Raphaël Lessard et le Foton Big General

Ceux qui suivent l’actualité automobile savent que le segment des automobiles intermédiaires est en net déclin en Amérique du Nord. La preuve? Ford, un des plus importants constructeurs sur notre continent, a décidé de terminer la production de sa populaire Fusion l’été dernier. Pendant un bon moment, cette belle berline intermédiaire dont les lignes semblaient inspirées de celles des Jaguar et des Aston Martin trônait presque au sommet des ventes des autos de ce segment. C’était la bagarre avec la Toyota Camry, la Nissan Altima, la Subaru Legacy et la Honda Accord. Il y avait aussi la Chevrolet Malibu dans la course alors que FCA avait déjà abandonné la production de la Chrysler 200! Curieusement, après avoir connu un bon départ (et pas longtemps après avoir sorti la version Sport à moteur V6 turbo et traction intégrale de la Fusion), les ventes commencèrent à péricliter. Et pas juste pour Ford. Il faut voir comment les consommateurs se sont mis à bouder la pourtant très populaire Toyota Camry pour se lancer dans les RAV4 !

C’est dans ce contexte que le constructeur allemand Volkswagen a quand même décidé de réviser et de relancer sa berline Passat, une version bien «américaine» de berline allemande construite dans ses toutes récentes usines de Chattanooga au Tennessee. Dire que la Passat 2020 est «toute nouvelle» serait présomptueux.  N’importe lequel observateur un peu futé saura la reconnaître de loin. Toutefois, il y a eu certains changements intéressant à plusieurs niveaux sur cette auto.

Au départ, il faut le souligner, la Passat nord-américaine ne repose pas sur la plus moderne plateforme MQB de Volkswagen comme les autres Passat (européennes) de ce monde. La «nouvelle» Passat retient l’ancienne plateforme qui, en soi, n’est pas mauvaise...juste un peu «ancienne». Donc, la Passat 2020 est construite sur la même architecture que celle que l’on connaît depuis 2012. De plus, sous son capot, on retrouvera le même (et seul) moteur à quatre cylindres turbocompressé de 2,0 litres qui fait 174 chevaux mais maintenant 206 li-pi ce qui est légèrement plus que la version de l’année dernière (184 li-pi).  Il vient combiné à la seule boîte de vitesses possible, soit l’automatique à six rapports et la traction avant.
Physiquement, on reconnaîtra la Passat 2020 à sa nouvelle calandre semblable à celle des Jetta qui plonge plus profondément dans le pare-chocs avant et à ses phares DEL plus minces et plus effilés. Toutefois, ce qui distingue la nouvelle version avec plus d’évidence, c’est l’arrière complètement redessiné avec des feux plus effilés aussi. Disons que j’aime bien!

Si vous êtes un fan des Volkswagen, vous noterez que l’intérieur est à peine transformé. Le tableau de bord semble reconduit avec son instrumentation plus «ancienne» avec cadrans traditionnels Toutefois, vous y noterez également un nouvel écran de 6,3 pouces et un nouveau centre d’infodivertissement incluant les prises Apple Car Play et Android Auto. Personnellement, ce que j’ai noté, c’est que Volkswagen a finalement changé la position du bouton de volume de la radio. Dans le passé, j’ai souvent mentionné que lorsqu’on le manipulait, on touchait en même temps une fonction tactile qui modifiait aussitôt le mode de fonctionnement de la radio. Plus maintenant…(j’aimerais cela me vanter que chez Volkswagen, «on» m’a lu mais…). La version R-Line qui m’a été prêtée comportait des palettes de changement de vitesses au volant (celui-ci a un plat à son cercle inférieur) et quelques touches personnalisées à la finition intérieure comme des sièges plus moulants et quelques touches aux coutures de la sellerie. Ce thème se retrouve aussi au compartiment arrière qui, lui, mentionnons-le, est très accueillant pour les passagers tout en leur procurant du bon espace de débattement pour les jambes et la tête. Quant au coffre, il est plutôt généreux mais ses deux énormes charnières peuvent écraser un objet qui sera dans leur trajectoire en refermant le capot. Heureusement, vous vous en doutez, ce coffre peut s’agrandir en abaissant les dossiers des places d’arrière.

Sur la route
Il est toujours plaisant de conduire une Volkswagen, ne serait-ce que par sa tenue de route étonnante. Toutefois, la Passat nord-américaine est un peu différente de ses sœurs européennes. Accusant un poids d’un peu plus de 3300 livres, l’auto «peine» un peu à atteindre le cap des 100 km/h en moins de huit secondes. Toutefois, en «jouant» avec les palettes au volant, j’ai obtenu des reprises plus rassurantes. Définitivement, l’auto est silencieuse et offre un confort de roulement capable de rivaliser avec ce qui se fait de mieux sur le marché. Cependant, on ne reconnaît pas nécessairement la tenue de route solide et la fermeté de la suspension des autres Volkswagen dans «notre» Passat. Ce n’est pas nécessairement un péché mais c’est un peu déroutant. La direction est aussi plus légère mais, ironiquement, elle demeure plutôt précise. Toutefois, le freinage avec disque à chaque roue pourrait paraître décevant à l’amateur de la marque. La pédale est un peu «molle» et la réaction plus lente que sur les autres Volks. Mais tous mes arrêts se sont faits avec sécurité. Seule ombre au tableau, les pneus Falken 235/40R-19 (montés sur de superbes jantes identifiées par le nom Bonneville) qui équipaient l’auto y étaient bruyants! On pouvait en sentir un certain grondement selon l’angle de la direction.

On ne peut pas dire que la «nouvelle» Passat n’est pas recommandable, au contraire. Elle est spacieuse et confortable mais elle ne reproduit pas les performances et caractéristiques auxquelles la faction allemande de Volkswagen nous avait habituées.
En ce qui a trait à la consommation, la Passat R-Line nous a donné une moyenne de 11,31 l./100 km en situation presque exclusivement urbaine. Cette Passat R-Line affichait un prix de 36 495 $ auquel il faut ajouter les 1315 $ de frais de transport et de préparation.
Enfin, un Québecois gagne en NASCAR

Depuis le temps que je couvre la série NASCAR sous toutes ses formes, j’étais on ne peut plus heureux d’apprendre que le jeune Raphaël Lessard originaire de Saint-Joseph de Beauce avait gagné la course de la série Ganders RV an Outdoors qui se courait tôt samedi sur le grand ovale du Talladega Speedway. Il était grandement temps que nous ayons un de nos pilotes être le premier au fil d’arrivée. Pourtant, ils sont plusieurs à s’y être essayés.
Notez qu’en plus de sa victoire, j’ai été impressionné par la façon qu’il s’est exprimé en anglais lors de son entrevue à la télé. C’était presque impeccable (même si c’était truffé de clichés nascariens)! Espérons que la séquence se continuera. Avec cette victoire, il a prouvé qu’il était meilleur cette année que son patron, un certain Kyle Busch (champion NASCAR 2019 mais aucune victoire en 2020 !).
Notez, finalement, que le commanditaire, CANAC, est québécois aussi !
Un chef d’œuvre d’imitation des Chinois!
On est parfois un peu durs avec nos amis chinois. On leur reproche trop souvent d’imiter (voire plutôt recopier) certains de nos produits. Mais cette fois, ils se sont surpassés. Voici donc le Foton Big General, un pick-up dévoilé au récent Salon de Beijing en Chine.

C’est fou ce qu’il ressemble à…je vous laisse deviner! Toutefois, semble-t-il qu’il soit légèrement plus petit que l’original américain mais un peu plus gros que le Ranger du même constructeur. Il aurait pour moteur un quatre cylindres turbodiesel de 2,5 litres ou un quatre cylindres à essence de 2,0 litres de quelque 235 chevaux. Il serait combiné à une boîte ZF allemande à huit rapports. On imagine qu’il soit à propulsion ou peut-être même à quatre roues motrices sur demande. Incidemment, ce Foton est construit par BAIC, un des plus importants constructeurs de voitures en Chine qui est aussi associé à Mercedes-Benz et Hyundai.
L’ironie du sort est que le Foton Da Jiang Jun (The Big General) pourrait être commercialisé en Australie, là où la camionnette américaine originale qu’il imite est déjà vendue! On s’imagine bien qu’il ne sera jamais question de l’exporter en Amérique du Nord.
Ce n’est pas la première fois que nos amis chinois «imitent» un modèle connu. Ils l’ont déjà fait avec le Land Rover Evoque  rebaptisé Landwind X7. Il aura fallu trois ans à Land Rover pour réussir à convaincre les cours chinoises de rendre la production du Landwind illégale…mais il était déjà trop tard!

Đánh Giá Toyota Highlander 2020: Thay đổi nhưng chưa đem lại ấn tượng mạnh mẽ
Trước khi phân khúc SUV ba hàng ghế trở nên bùng nổ như ngày nay, Toyota Highlander đích thực là một dòng xe nổi trội trong phân khúc này, mang đến sự phong cách trong thiết kế, sự tiện nghi thoải mái trong trải nghiệm và khả năng vận hành đầy ấn tượng.
Tuy nhiên, trong thời gian gần đây, các đối thủ cạnh tranh trong phân khúc SUV đã thay đổi với thiết kế bắt mắt, công nghệ hiện đại hơn. Để không trở nên lạc hậu trước các đối thủ đầy tiềm năng này, Toyota đã phải nâng cấp Highlander để nó cao cấp và hiện đại hơn.
Trước đó tại Triển lãm ô tô New York 2019, Toyota đã chính thức tung ra Highlander 2020 phiên bản mới với phong cách thiết kế được cải tiến, bổ sung thêm hàng loạt công nghệ cùng tính năng an toàn. Tuy nhiên, Toyota Highlander 2020 vẫn còn tồn tại một số nhược điểm lớn, tiêu biểu như: không gian hàng ghế thứ 3 chật hẹp, kiểu dáng không mới mẻ, hấp dẫn và trên hết là mức giá bán đắt đỏ (phiên bản Platinum có giá 51.000 USD, tương đương khoảng 1,2 tỷ đồng). Chính những nhược điểm này khiến Toyota Highlander 2020 không thể trở thành một lựa chọn hàng đầu trong phân khúc SUV ba hàng ghế đang diễn ra những cuộc cạnh tranh rất khốc liệt.
Thiết kế: 5/10
Dựa trên nền tảng thiết kế mới TNGA-K (Toyota New Global Architecture), Toyota Highlander 2020 sở hữu diện mạo bắt mắt và thể thao hơn. Đặc biệt là phần đầu xe với cụm đèn pha hình thang ngược có xu hướng chạy dốc xuống, bộ lưới tản nhiệt hoàn toàn mới với kiểu dáng hình thang nhỏ gọn đầy tinh tế, thay vì kiểu lưới dao cạo như trên thế hệ tiền nhiệm. Nằm ngay phía trên mặt lưới tản nhiệt là thanh crom sáng bóng với logo Toyota quen thuộc. Nhìn chung, đây được coi là một sự cải tiến trong phong cách thiết kế của Highlander.

Mặc dù được lấy cảm hứng từ đàn em RAV4, nhưng phần thân xe Toyota Highlander 2020 lại mang tới cảm giác mềm mại và thanh thoát hơn, ngoại trừ các đường gân dập nổi chạy dài từ cửa trước tới vòm bánh sau. Bộ la-zăng đa chấu sắc nét cỡ 20 inch trên Highlander 2020 dường như được lấy cảm hứng từ một dòng xe sang trọng nào đó. Thiết kế đuôi xe khá ấn tượng với kiểu dáng sắc nét gợi nhớ đến các dòng xe NX của Lexus, với cụm đèn hậu chạy ngang.

Trong khoang cabin, Highlander 2020 được trang bị một màn hình cảm ứng 8 inch khá bắt mắt nằm ở trung tâm. Trên biến thể Platinum cao cấp là màn hình cảm ứng 12.3 inch – được coi là một trong những hệ thống đa phương tiện lớn nhất phân khúc. Toyota còn khéo léo đặt các điểm nhấn như thanh kim loại màu bạc sắc nét và bọc da màu nâu cao cấp xung quanh khu vực màn hình thông tin giải trí.

Tương tự như màn hình cảm ứng 12.3 inch trên biến thể Platinum, màn hình 8.0 inch tiêu chuẩn cung cấp hình ảnh sắc nét và chi tiết cùng khả năng hỗ trợ kết nối Apple CarPlay và Android Auto. Hệ thống thông tin giải trí trên Toyota Highlander 2020 khá giống với Starlink của Subaru, có khả năng chia đôi màn hình trung tâm, cho phép vừa hiển thị thông tin giải trí vừa thực hiện chức năng điều hướng.

Ngay cả trên phiên bản thấp nhất là Highlander L, khách hàng cũng được trải nghiệm hệ thống điều hòa 3 vùng độc lập, bảng đồng hồ với màn hình 4.2 inch sắc nét, kính tối màu cho hàng ghế sau, khóa Smart key cùng ghế lái chỉnh điện 8 hướng.

Tiến lên phiên bản cao cấp Platinum, Toyota Highlander 2020 sẽ được bổ sung thêm loạt trang bị cùng tính năng cao cấp và hiện đại như: hệ thống định vị tích hợp, sạc không dây Qi, gương chiếu hậu dạng kỹ thuật số, hệ thống âm thanh JBL 11 loa, 4 cổng sạc USB, hàng ghế trước tích hợp tính năng sưởi ấm/thông khí và đèn nội thất cảm ứng.
Hệ truyền động và cảm giác lái: 4/10

Dưới nắp capo của Toyota Highlander 2020 là khối động cơ V6 3.5L tiêu chuẩn kết hợp cùng hộp số tự động 8 cấp, sản sinh công suất tối đa 295 mã lực và momen xoắn cực đại 356 Nm. Với sức mạnh từ khối động cơ V6, tải trọng của Highlander 2020 lên đến con số 2268 kg – khá ấn tượng trong phân khúc SUV ba hàng ghế.

Ngoài ra, Toyota Highlander 2020 còn được bổ sung thêm phiên bản Hybrid hoàn toàn mới với khối động cơ DOHC 4 xi-lanh thẳng hàng, dung tích 2.5L kết hợp cùng 2 động cơ điện, sản sinh công suất tối đa 240 mã lực. Toàn bộ biến thể của Toyota Highlander 2020 sử dụng động cơ V6 3.5L hay động cơ hybrid đều cung cấp 2 lựa chọn hệ dẫn động cầu trước hoặc 4 bánh toàn thời gian.

Nhìn chung, Toyota Highlander 2020 mang lại cảm giác lái khá ổn định và bền b�� thường thấy trên các dòng xe của Toyota. Tất nhiên, Highlander không phải là một chiếc xe thể thao nên khách hàng không nên mong đợi quá nhiều về khả năng vận hành mạnh mẽ. Vô-lăng khá nhẹ và phân bố trọng lượng đều không gây ra độ trễ, người lái có thể dễ dàng làm quen sau vài ngày. Bàn đạp ga cùng phanh của Highlander 2020 khá mềm, cung cấp tốc độ phản hồi nhanh nhạy và linh hoạt. Khả năng cách âm trong khoang cabin Highlander cũng được đánh giá cao, đặc biệt là phiên bản Limited và Platinum còn được trang bị thêm cửa kính nhiều lớp phía trước.

Trang thiết bị cùng tính năng an toàn là một trong những điểm mạnh của Toyota Highlander 2020. Nổi bật là hệ thống an toàn Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 được lắp đặt sẵn trên mọi biến thể Highlander 2020, bao gồm phanh khẩn cấp tự động, kiểm soát hành trình thích ứng với hỗ trợ đánh lái và giữ làn, cảnh báo va chạm phía trước và nhận diện biển báo giao thông. Ngoài ra có thể kể đến các tính năng an toàn khác như giám sát điểm mù, cảnh báo phương tiện cắt ngang khi lùi, hệ thống camera 360 độ,…
Khả năng tiết kiệm nhiên liệu: 4/10

Toyota Highlander 2020 với hệ dẫn động 4 bánh toàn thời gian có mức tiêu thụ nhiên liệu 11.7L/100km tại nội đô, 8.7L/100km trên cao tốc, 10.2L/100km kết hợp đô thị và cao tốc. Đây được coi là một con số khá ấn tượng đối với các đối thủ cũng được trang bị hệ dẫn động 4 bánh toàn thời gian. Điển hình như Kia Telluride hay Hyundai Palisade có mức tiêu thụ nhiên liệu 11.2L/100km kết hợp.
Đặc biệt hơn, phiên bản Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2020 lại có con số ấn tượng hơn, chỉ từ 6.92 – 8.4L/ 100km, cải thiện 17% so với bản cũ.
Giá bán: 5/10
Toyota Highlander L 2020 là phiên bản tiêu chuẩn có mức giá bản rẻ nhất, khởi điểm từ 34.600 USD (~ 811 triệu đồng) tại Mỹ. Trong khi đó, phiên bản cao cấp nhất là Platinum có mức giá khởi điểm 46.850 USD (~ 1,1 tỷ đồng) với gói option 1950 USD (~ 46 triệu đồng) cho hệ dẫn động 4 bánh toàn thời gian.
Về đối thủ cạnh tranh trong cùng phân khúc SUV ba hàng ghế, Kia Telluride SX và Hyundai Palisade Limited lại sở hữu khoang nội thất rộng rãi hơn, tính năng công nghệ tốt hơn và phong cách thiết kế hấp dẫn hơn hẳn so với Highlander Platinum 2020; đặc biệt là có mức giá hấp dẫn hơn: Telluride có giá 48.100 USD (~ 1,12 tỷ đồng) và Palisade có giá 47.605 USD (~ 1,11 tỷ đồng).

Nissan Rogue 2021: Novo X-Trail tem teaser revelado nos EUA

O Nissan Rogue 2021 ou, se preferir, Nissan X-Trail 2021, teve seu primeiro teaser revelado nos EUA, apesar das várias fotos já vazadas. O SUV de porte médio da marca japonesa terá apresentação mundial no dia 15 de junho e chegará, em algum momento no futuro, ao Brasil.
Essa nova geração promete mais eficiência, conectividade e segurança, além de um design mais atraente e expressivo. O Nissan Rogue 2021 chegará ao mercado americano com motor grande, como de praxe, tendo o 2.5 litros de 190 cavalos como padrão para a maioria das versões.

O SUV também terá o 2.0 VC Turbo, que assumirá a posição de topo de linha, excluindo qualquer possibilidade de uso de um V6. Isto porque o Murano não consta na lista de lançamentos da Nissan para os próximos anos, o que poderia dar o X-Trail a oportunidade de assumir sua posição parcialmente, é claro.
Além disso, o Rogue 2021 também deverá dispor de uma versão híbrida, mas não será seu forte. Pelo menos não nos EUA, mas em outros lugares, o X-Trail Hybrid terá que aparecer para reduzir a emissão de CO2. Nos EUA, o Rogue terá tração dianteira, mas será obrigado a dispor de versão AWD por causa das vendas crescentes nesse caso.

Bastante criticado nos EUA, o câmbio CVT XTronic deve ser mantido no SUV, mas a Nissan terá de fazer alguma reprogramação para que o mesmo fique mais esperto e confiável, que é a reclamação de muitos clientes.
Uma alternativa seria utilizar a transmissão de dupla embreagem da Daimler ou Renault, contudo, esse tipo de câmbio não é bem aceito no mercado americano devido à variação enorme de temperatura no país, já tendo sido cortado até pela VW. O ideal seria uma caixa totalmente automática e tradicional.

Se quiser passar pelos Toyota RAV4 e Honda CR-V, o Nissan Rogue 2021 terá de se destacar mais em performance para atrair novos consumidores. Em números, pelo menos, ele não está tão ruim assim, tendo vendido mais de 350 mil só em 2019 no mercado americano, mas ainda abaixo da dupla nipônica rival.

Next year, I predict we’ll see even bigger screens in our cars. Tech-focused companies, like Byton, have tested this idea in their prototypes; Byton has showcased a 49-inch screen in its M-Byte. Next year may be the year we finally see these massive screens in production-level vehicles. Cadillac kicked off this trend with a massive 38-inch screen in its 2021 Escalade. These bigger screens will likely mean the death of buttons and knobs, which several of our reviewers will certainly miss.
The other big prediction I have for 2020 is seeing more technology integrated into our driving experience. You can already use your phone as a key with Ford and Hyundai, for example. I’ve decided to go big for my 2020 preview—so let’s put to one side what will no doubt be a huge number of electric and hybrid cars for the (relative) masses, and focus instead on two top-tier contenders.
First up is the Ferrari Roma, pictured above, which is interesting not so much for its powertrain as the fact its styling represents such a break from tradition for the Italian firm. For in the Roma, there are generous swoops and curves that give it a softer, more elegant aesthetic than you’ll see in other modern Ferraris. Some have questioned if the Roma, as a result, looks a bit too much like an Aston Martin—but for me, it’s a gloriously individual piece of design that also happens to be home to a wonderful, sculpted interior and a 612bhp 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8. Sounds like a good recipe…

If the Ferrari is special, then the Mercedes-AMG One promises to be quite simply off the chart. What we have here is a Mercedes Formula One drivetrain reimagined to work in a road car. So that’s a 1.6-liter V6 with four electric motors that together make more than 1,000 bhp. There’s also an 8-speed paddle-shift gearbox, pushrod suspension, ceramic brake discs, and a steering wheel that looks like something Lewis Hamilton might use at the weekends. So, yes, it’s going to be a pretty serious bit of kit.
Production is limited to 275 units with the price for each running into the millions. But ownership isn’t what makes cars like this interesting. No, what’s fascinating is seeing just how far (and how fast) the humble motor car can be taken.

Of course, the new Defender can’t steal all the muddy spotlight. We fully expect Ford to pull the cover off the long-awaited and much-anticipated 2021 Bronco this year. It’s been a while since O.J. Simpson sent the last iteration of the Bronco to an early death, and off-roaders and soft-roaders alike have been hankering for a genuine SUV from the blue oval.
While The Juice’s Bronco was a full-size SUV based on the F-Series truck platform, this new one will be a bit smaller, and likely a bit more nimble, as it’s being built on the same platform as the Ranger pickup—sounds perfect for our favorite off-road course.

As one of my colleagues already mentioned, next year will no doubt feature a huge number of announcements regarding electric vehicles (EVs). Automakers have thus far brought more enthusiasm to the electric-car game than the average American driver, but car companies finally seem to be trying to figure out ways to market and build electric vehicles that should appeal not only to tech first adopters and “greenies,” but also to folks who like to drive.
Ford’s debut of the Mustang Mach-E, including prominent mention of its Porsche-beating 0-to-60 times, may mark a relatively new chapter in EV marketing outside the Tesla bubble. Porsche definitely called attention to its 918’s top-notch performance, but that car’s price put it in even rarer air than Tesla’s original Roadster and Model S. The Mach-E, expected to start at less than $45K, should appeal to a considerably more diverse pool of car shoppers than either of Tesla’s original models, and it will no doubt have company in its price range by the end of 2021.
Another relatively new development in the marketing of vehicles capable of running on electricity recently comes from Toyota, which has decided to make the plug-in hybrid version of its massively popular crossover, the RAV4 Prime, the most capable, and most exciting, version of that vehicle available to American buyers. Noting its sub-6-second 0-to-60 time and 302 horsepower in advertisements, Toyota hopes to make up for declining Prius sales with a wide range of hybrids, including sedan models that will face a narrowing pool of American competitors as Ford and GM execute their plans to focus more carefully on crossovers and SUVs in the future.
Whether vehicles running on electricity will ever be able to generate the excitement and sales that gasoline-powered automobiles have enjoyed in their first century remains to be seen, but we look forward to seeing new ads and approaches, as well as more exciting vehicles, next year.

Toyota’s first plug-in hybrid RAV4 piles on the power and fuel efficiency
Toyota gave its first plug-in hybrid RAV4 more than just a plug. It piled on the power as well.
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, which was unveiled this week at the LA Auto Show, will be achieve two seemingly conflicting goals. The vehicle will be its most fuel efficient and one of its most powerful.
This variant of the RAV4 will have an all-wheel drive, sport-tuned suspension. It has a tuned 2.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine and when combined with the electric motors will deliver 302 horsepower and be able to travel from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a projected 5.8 seconds. Toyota hasn’t announced a price yet, but expect it to be more expensive than the hybrid version of the RAV4, which starts at $28,100.

That might seem slow compared to some of the pure electric sedans on the market. But it’s far zippier than previous models and marks a much needed improvement in the RAV4. The vehicle’s electric battery will provide an estimated 39 miles of range before kicking back to the gas-powered engine.
The RAV4 Prime has a manufacturer-estimated 90 combined MPGe. The 2021 model, will be available in the sportier SE and luxury-focused XSE trims, will hit the marketplace in summer 2020.
To understand the improvement, consider this. Toyota offered a 3.5-liter V6 in the 2006 to 2012 model years of the RAV4. And yet, despite having more cylinders and bigger displacement it only produced 269 horsepower and combined fuel economy rating of 21 miles per gallon.
The vehicle will also come standard with advanced driver assistance features, including pre-collision pedestrian detection, radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beam and road sign assistance.
As Toyota offers more electrified versions of its popular SUVs, the company is upping the warranty on its hybrid battery. The automaker said that beginning with the 2020 model year, its hybrid battery warranty will be increased from 8 years or 100,000 miles to 10 years from original date of first use, or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

It was announced what many expected: the six-cylinder engine would be replaced by a four-cylinder turbo. Once upon a time, sedans The mid-size sedan segment has taken a strange direction in recent years. Formerly the most popular and innocuous in the industry, these cars have become strangely transformed into rare and mysterious objects because of the dominance of SUVs. The designers have tried to add a touch of sportiness to the 3.6R with bumpers a little more aggressive and two big exhaust pipes in the back. Nevertheless, it blends into the mass as it is subtle. It's a bit like that. the defect of the 3.6R. It seems that Subaru wanted to market a sports sedan, but it did not dare enough. With such a beefy engine that emits a sound so satisfactory while having a good dose of low-end torque, not to mention a smoothness of operation impeccable, all, coupled with an all-wheel drive so well thought out, we would have expected to be able to compete with a Honda Accord Sport, a Toyota Camry XSE V6 or a Mazda 6 Signature. Alas, even with the six-cylinder under the bonnet, the Legacy achieves the 0-100 km / h in 7.1 seconds, making it a sedan "sport" not much faster than the entry declinations range of competition.

A curious mixture Maybe if the Subaru Legacy 3.6R was equipped with a manual gearbox, as in the past, or a conventional automatic transmission, it would succeed in thrilling the hearts of enthusiasts. For the rest, the cabin of the Legacy remains spacious and well assembled, without anything really distinctive. Its back seat is comfortable and its Starlink multimedia system is beyond reproach. It is clear, easy to understand and physical controls are welcome in winter when wearing gloves. And with a trunk that can accommodate up to 425 liters of space, the Legacy is positioned between a Accord (473 liters) and a Camry (399 liters), making it one of the most versatile sedans in the segment.

You have to be a certain kind of person to appreciate what the Jeep Cherokee has to offer. It’s not the best-handling SUV in its class, nor is it the most techy. Other crossovers look better, and many offer more utility. But only the Cherokee will do proper Jeep stuff. If off-roading’s your game, this SUV is for you.

The Cherokee slots between the Compass and the Grand Cherokee in Jeep’s lineup. When the fifth-generation model came onto the scene in 2013, its design was certainly controversial. The Cherokee received a refresh in 2019, so its looks aren’t quite so divisive anymore.
Cherokee Latitude, Latitude Plus, Altitude, Latitude Lux, Limited and High Altitude trims are available with two- or four-wheel drive, while the Upland, North Edition, Trailhawk and Trailhawk Elite trims are four-wheel-drive only. Drivers get a choice of a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated I4, a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 or a 3.2-liter V6, depending on trim. No matter what engine or driveline you choose, every Cherokee comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Earlier this year, my colleague Craig Cole tested the Cherokee Limited with the 2.0-liter turbo engine. My tester, meanwhile, is the High Altitude with the V6 engine, which offers 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. This is more than enough power for toddling around town, but the nine-speed transmission is problematic — slow to shift and frequently hunting around for the right gear. The trick to smoothing it out is to actually switch the Cherokee’s Selec-Terrain dial to Sport, which helps keep the engine revving in the heart of its powerband, though it means sacrificing a bit of fuel efficiency.
This Jeep is hardly a corner-carver, but it handles itself respectively well. The steering is nicely weighted and the brakes offer confident stopping power. Still, it’s kind of sluggish, the body rolls and overall, it’s not what I’d call fun to drive. If that’s a priority, check out the Mazda CX-5.
Head off road, however, and the Cherokee shines. You can get it with Jeep’s optional Active Drive II four-wheel-drive system with a low range, which also includes a 1-inch suspension lift. Combine that with the Sand/Mud and Rock modes in the Selec-Terrain system, as well as the optional locking rear differential, and the Cherokee can easily go places other compact SUVs can’t.
My tester has the less-robust Active Drive I package, which is essentially all-wheel drive that disconnects the rear axle when it isn’t needed, like when you’re on the highway, for better efficiency. This should be enough for folks who need all-wheel drive for snowy commutes or the occasional dirt road, and its more economical operation helps me achieve the EPA’s combined rating of 22 miles per gallon during a week-long test.
I wouldn’t want to be doing this in a Mazda.

For 2020, Jeep expands the Cherokee’s driver-assistance offerings, with the Advanced Safety Group now available across a greater number of trim levels. This package includes lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning and rain-sensing wipers. It’s just a shame that no driving aids are standard on lower-grade Cherokees, and things like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert don’t kick in until the Latitude plus. Adaptive cruise control can only be had on the most-expensive models. Meanwhile, most of this tech comes standard on competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
Thankfully, my High Altitude tester has all the bells and whistles, and I really like that I can dial them in through the excellent Uconnect infotainment system. For example, I can adjust the lane-departure warning with early, mid and late settings, and can set the steering intervention to be low, medium or high. The blind-spot monitoring can be set to be just a visual alert, add an audible warning or I can just turn it off. It’s great to have options.
Beyond the adjustable driving aids, I’ve always loved Uconnect for its well-thought-out design. There is a lot of information on each screen, yet somehow it remains clear and easy to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included on both the standard 7.0-inch screen or the optional 8.4-inch display. The native navigation system has excellent graphics but its voice recognition can occasionally struggle.
If you’re looking for advanced driver’s aids you’ll have to pony up for a high-level trim.

I want to give a shoutout to Jeep’s multifunction steering wheel, as well. The front has nicely organized buttons for my phone and cruise control, and arrows to scroll through the gauge cluster information. The buttons on the back of the steering wheel control audio stations, presets, volume and media source. Like Uconnect, it might seem really busy at first, but after a while, I really grow to appreciate this user experience.
As for charging, the Cherokee doesn’t have a wireless charging pad, but my tester has a USB-A and 12-volt outlet in both the front and center consoles. The rear seats get two charge-only USB-A ports, as well as a three-prong, 115-volt, 150-watt outlet. Another 12-volt outlet can be found in the cargo hold.
Inside story
The Cherokee’s interior isn’t really anything to write home about. It’s rugged-looking and the materials are just OK, and my tester’s color palette is particularly dark, with just some contrasting grey stitching to lighten it up. Thankfully, the seats are comfortable and there is plenty of space for people up front or in the back.
Space for your cargo, however, falls below the competition, with 27.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats with the cargo floor in its lowest position and 54.7 cubes overall. The RAV4, meanwhile, goes big with 37.6 and 69.8 cubic feet, respectively, and the CR-V goes gigantic with 39.2 and 75.8. Heck, even the Mazda CX-5 with its sharply sloping rear hatch offers more cargo space.
The Cherokee’s cabin skews more rugged than anything else. If you want luxury appointments, looks elsewhere.

However, there are a fair amount of small storage cubbies in the Cherokee, with a little bin in the front console and a hidey-hole on the dash. Large pockets extend nearly the full length of the front doors.
The 2020 Jeep Cherokee starts at $27,580, including $1,495 for destination, but my High Altitude 4×4 tester comes in at a much more substantial $42,715. Personally, I’d grab the Cherokee Trailhawk, add the Cold Weather package (I must have heated seats) and select the towing package to take advantage of the Jeep’s 4,500-pound tow rating. Very nicely equipped, a Cherokee Trailhawk like my dream spec slots below $40,000, though it doesn’t include many advanced driving aids.
If off-roading is a regular part of your life, the Cherokee is an excellent choice. With all its rugged options and bona fide off-road hardware, it’ll out-shine any other small SUV in the dirt. On pavement, however, the Cherokee can’t quite keep up with its more efficient, better equipped, more spacious competition. The Cherokee is fantastic for Jeep stuff, but as a daily driver, it suffers.
