When King of Kotha is compared to Pushpa, Dulquer Salmaan REACTS by saying, "It's a compliment."
According to Dulquer Salmaan, King of Kotha is intended to be a huge show for the post-COVID audience rather than a copy of Pushpa.
During the trailer and song launch ceremony in Mumbai, actor Dulquer Salmaan stated that his upcoming Malayalam action movie King of Kotha is not a parody of Allu Arjun's mega hit Pushpa.
"There is no such thing as influence. I adore Allu Arjun as a performer and as an actor. But the character sketch for this movie was created about three years ago; the movie has been in theaters since 2019. We thus had this in mind. I've heard this, and I consider it to be somewhat flattering. Although we are not attempting to mimic or counterfeit Pushpa, Dulquer added, "I hope it succeeds as Pushpa did.
In the Abhilash Joshiy-directed movie, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Prasanna, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Gokul Suresh are among the other cast members. In order to satisfy the needs of a post-COVID spectacle-hungry public, Dulquer claims that it will be one of the biggest Malayalam movies in recent memory. Onam, August 24, the day of the Malayalam premiere of King of Kotha, will also see the release of its Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada dubs.

The action and fight sequences in Gumraah were thrilling to watch. Intense one-on-one combats coupled with loud gun action steal the show! Lately, I have seen Aditya Roy Kapur behaving like Sunny Deol on the big screens. He was once a romantic hero and from that he transitioned into a hardcore action hero who roars and bashes up villains. Such hardcore action scenes do not suit his image because he may behave like Sunny Deol on-screen but are nowhere near Sunny Deol in terms of physicality. But still, the guy is trying, and that’s what earns him some respect. Average Performances The performances of the actors in Gumraah are not bad, but just about average. Aditya Roy’s acting and dialogue delivery is average throughout the movie. After giving super-flops like "Rashtra Kavach Om", his image sure has deteriorated. The main supporting actors, Mrunal Thakur, and Ronit Roy, carried out their roles as the two police officers well. However, the characters of these two cops, as per the script’s demand, are direly unidimensional with fixed expressions which can at times bore the audiences. Of course, there are many other actors and actresses who had brief appearances throughout the drama. https://youtu.be/LyK2yWfQqcQ The Bad: The Plot And Screenplay Gumraah is the official remake of the 2019 Tamil-language crime thriller Thadam. As Bollywood is following the trend of copying South Indian films and remaking them in Hindi, this wouldn’t do them any good. You need to know what you are making and whether you will get any benefit after making it. The plot and screenplay of Gumraah are such that they will not engage the audience. The excitement just does not build up! Firstly, Aditya Roy Kapur can be the “talk of the town” among women. But as for us men, we are least bothered to see him or his time-pass activities on the screens. And even we are least bothered to know which one of the Aditya Roy Kapurs has committed the murder. Be it Aditya Roy No. 1 or Aditya Roy No. 2, in the end, it will be Aditya Roy only who will be tagged as a criminal! So the thing is when you know that it is Aditya Roy only who will be convicted at the end, then the story becomes very much uninteresting. Not just predictable, but it can bore you as well. The two look-alikes appear so much similar that the sympathy of the audience does not build up for any of them. No doubt, this may be the reason why this film has underperformed at the box office. The credits for this disastrous adapted screenplay go to Aseem Arora. A Romantic Track Featuring Aditya Roy Kapur And Vedika Pinto From Gumraah (2023) https://youtu.be/LQjc7WFfDiU Low-Grade Camerawork And Sloppy Editing The visuals and camerawork by Vinnet Malhotra in Gumraah are low-quality. For instance, many scenes were shady. These scenes, which involved police interrogation in cells and some of Aditya Roy’s weird stunts, were mostly shot during the night. Some of these scenes were difficult to comprehend due to their fast-paced nature and dull and dark cinematography. I also feel that the editing of this film was done abruptly by Sahil Nayar just to make it fast-paced within a run duration of 2 hours and 10 minutes. In fact, he ended up making the drama superfast with abrupt scenes here and there due to which it lost its thrill. The Verdict: Gumraah has been directed by Vardhan Ketkar. Ketkar brother, please shower some mercy on the poor audiences. Even one Aditya Roy Kapur is intolerable, and you have shown two of them! And God knows how you came up with the idea of remaking Thadam in Hindi and that too with Aditya Roy Kapur. Thadam was a blockbuster because of its charismatic South Indian cast and the classy directional style in which South Indian films are made, which Bollywood will never be able to copy. So, a blockbuster in South India may turn out to be a disaster if it is remade in Hindi with improper casting and direction. Also, this is the first time I am seeing Mrunal Thakur in a serious role as a police officer. I am used to seeing her in romantic roles and item number songs only. But this film didn’t turn out well for her in spite of her serious acting. Gumraah also showcases how abusive Indian policemen can be. People who are committing crimes in India may not be as lucky as Aditya Roy Kapur. Instead of a gorgeous lady police officer like Mrunal Thakur, one may end up getting arrested by a fat slob of an abusive policeman who himself may look like some child molester. So, don’t get too inspired by this movie. And you should not be because in certain scenes, Aditya Roy Kapur is hung from the ceiling and beaten up black and blue by policemen inside a cell. Gumraah for sure is a crime-thriller but watching this movie is a crime in itself! By the way, the story revolves around murdering for revenge. One of the Aditya Roys had murdered the man due to some past enmity with him which you will find out after watching the movie. Read the full article

The situation takes a tragic turn when Narain and the rest of the senior police squad are poisoned after consuming alcohol. Best Documentary Short Film Nominees for the 95th Academy Awards (2023, listed in order of appearance in the shorts package)
This blog, since 2013, has been the site of my write-ups to the Oscar-nominated short film packages – a personal tradition for myself and for this blog. This omnibus write-up goes with my thanks to the Regency South Coast Village in Santa Ana, California for providing all three Oscar-nominated short film packages (in previous years, I had to view the documentary shorts in two separate screenings due to theater policy!). Without further ado, here are the nominees for the Best Documentary Short Film at this year’s Oscars. The write-ups for the Live Action and Animated Short categories are coming later this week. Films predominantly in a language other than English are listed with their nation(s) of origin.
How Do You Measure a Year? (2021)
If the name Jay Rosenblatt rings a bell, that is because he was responsible for one of the most ethically questionable nominees in this category (at least for as long I’ve been regularly seeking the documentary shorts out) in recent times. Though How Do You Measure a Year? is far more ethical and more enjoyable a watch than When We Were Bullies (2021), this is the equivalent of sharing a polished home movie with your friends. Deriving its title from “Seasons of Love” from the musical Rent, How Do You Measure a Year? splices together footage of an annual Rosenblatt tradition. Every year, on his daughter Ella’s birthday, he asks Ella a series of questions – most are the same, year-by-year (e.g., what does she think of their daughter-father relationship, what “strength” is, what does she wish to be when she grows up, etc.) – and Ella answers. The first time this tradition appears is on Ella’s second birthday, and it concludes on her eighteenth, just before heading off to university.
There is no denying that this is an intensely personal project for the Rosenblatt family. Ella speaks fondly of this tradition at the conclusion of the final interview, and one can only imagine how loving a document it is for her parents. Yet in this short film format spread across seventeen interviews, How Do You Measure a Year? cannot hope to provide any insight about children and a child’s growth and maturation that audiences do not already know. Lacking the innovation and vision from other similar cinematic projects such as Michael Apted’s Up series (1964-2019), the latter stages of Rosenblatt’s film cannot stave off its repetitive structure and the director’s self-admitted realization that, perhaps, his questions are not as profound as he originally thought (reminding me of his former teacher’s belief in When We Were Bullies that people might not want to see his film). Rosenblatt is unfortunately correct. This film – however meaningful to the Rosenblatts and however enjoyable it might be (I am not often subject to pictures or videos of other people’s children, so my tolerance for this film was high) – sets an unwanted precedent in this category. At its core, How Do You Measure a Year? is a home movie, and should have remained so.
My rating: 6/10
The Elephant Whisperers (2022, India)
Deep in southern India in the state of Tamil Nadu lies Madumalai National Park, set aside as a wildlife reserve in 1940. There lives an elderly couple – Bomman and Belli – of the indigenous Kattunayakan tribe. Bomman and Belli, as well as elephants Raghu and Ammu, are the stars of Kartiki Gonsalves’ The Elephant Whisperers, a Netflix production. The Kattunayakan have been caring for elephants for generations – Bomman and Belli claim that their parents, grandparents, and their ancestors have grown and worked alongside elephants – and have always felt great emotional bonds with their pachyderm friends. With a forty-minute runtime whittled down from greater than 450 hours of footage, this is a gorgeously shot documentary that knows when to pull back to show us the park’s lush landscapes (one particular moment of cliffside beehives is a stunning use of drone-enabled camerawork) and the expressive and playful interactions between humans and elephants.
Gonsalves – a wildlife and cultural photographer who has dedicated herself to share stories from India’s indigenous populations – found the idea for this film during a chance encounter with Raghu in October 2017. She states in interviews that her aim with The Elephant Whisperers was to break down the perceptions that elephants are “others” to humans. In that, this film is a total triumph. What one wishes is that Gonsalves expand upon Bomman and Belli’s valuable insights into how climate change and human encroachment into natural spaces are affecting the lives of Asian elephants and the ecosystem they inhabit. In addition, it is evident that the elephants play a notable role in the spirituality of the Kattunayakan, who practice Hinduism. Though Gonsalves captures some fascinating footage of these religious ceremonies involving the elements, some context there would have helped deepen our understanding to how the likes of Bomman and Belli feel connected to Raghu and Ammu. Any attempt to help Westerners learn more about non-Abrahamic religions is always valuable, but Gonsalves elects not to do so here. The Elephant Whisperers occupies a space as neither a fully observational documentary nor a strictly educational one, satisfying only parts of both ends of that spectrum. With the characteristic Netflix digital gloss, the film remains a worthy document, but this could have used more educational and contextual substance.
My rating: 7.5/10
Stranger at the Gate (2022)
Joshua Seftel’s Stranger at the Gate has a story worth telling, but it is plagued by its focal imbalance and its incuriosity towards its main subject’s prior Islamophobia. Following twenty-five years of service in the U.S. military and multiple deployments to the Middle East during the ongoing War on Terror, Richard “Mac” McKinney returned home to Muncie, Indiana wracked with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), injury, alcohol abuse, and hatred towards Muslims. The timeline of Mac’s thought process is disappointingly unclear, but he decides to detonate an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Muncie Islamic Center during Friday prayer – fully expecting arrest, ready and raring to denounce Muslims in court. Noticing a threatening-looking Mac staking out the building, several members of the mosque’s congregation keep their friendly wits about them, and welcome him instead. This changes Mac’s mind, and he eventually converts to Islam.
Credit to Mac, an almost-mass murderer, for confronting the hatred that years of warfare in the Middle East inculcated in his psyche. And further plaudits must go to the congregants of the Muncie Islamic Center for their charity and neighborly warmth in the face of someone who, by their very admission, looked to cause harm to them. The failure of Stranger at the Gate lies not with any of the interview subjects, but the filmmaker, who fumbles the themes of the film and how to approach this story. Stranger at the Gate is primarily a dual account of how a man plans for a potential mass murder and how a collection of Indiana Muslims show kindness to prevent that mass murder from happening. This film has little to say about Mac’s racist beliefs, forged during his time in the military, and how he confronted his hatred. Stranger at the Gate almost plays into the idea that it is incumbent upon the mosque’s congregants to show kindness to a bigot in order to avoid a mass killing. The responsibility of avoiding the would-be tragedy falls primarily on the would-be terrorist, not the would-be victims. That we learn so little about the former – Mac’s unpackaging of his Islamophobia and more nuances in how he considers believes the mosque’s congregation to be his friends – severely weakens Seftel’s movie.
My rating: 6/10
Haulout (2022, Russia/United Kingdom)
On the banks of the Chukchi Sea, in far northeastern Siberia, is the simple home of Maxim Chakilev. The ocean’s mist lingers on the shore, and darkens as one gazes northward. Everything seems to be a shade of gray. Chakilev, the main subject in husband-and-wife team Maxim Arbugaev and Evgenia Arbugaeva’s Haulout, is a marine biologist who has been studying walruses and their migratory practices. For the film’s opening six minutes, we observe Chakilev go about a routine as if he is waiting for something or someone. One morning, he opens his window to find thousands of walruses on the beach, as far as he can see. It is, according some text at the film’s end, the largest walrus haulout in the world. With, at its peak, tens of thousands of walruses in close proximity to each other, there is a sense of danger that is fleeting – Chakilev goes about his research by staying in his humble abode, his protective fortress from the wildlife, and observing from his rooftop. Once the walruses leave after more than six weeks later, Chakilev emerges from his home to study the remains of deceased walruses spread across the beach.
Of this year’s slate of nominees, Haulout is the most naturalistic of the five, to the point where Arbugaev and Arbugaeva’s directorial hands are almost invisible. There are no interviews, no overt moments of directorial intervention or artistic self-consciousness. It feels, especially in its most breathtaking shots, as if it is a narrative film rather than a documentary. Haulout’s detachment from any sort of directorial artifice or messaging raises questions about its epilogue-like text before the end credits, explaining to the audience the images they have just seen. This film should be a meditation on climate change – as the melting polar ice is forcing an increasing amount of walruses to beach on Siberian shores every year, resulting in worse conditions and the greater possibility of stampedes and fighting. Instead, the film’s climate change arguments and information blurbs are relegated to a few seconds at the end. It is more a sensorial experience than an educational one. But what sights and sounds it contains.
My rating: 7.5/10
The Martha Mitchell Effect (2022)
Also on Netflix is Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy’s The Martha Mitchell Effect. One can find numerous pieces of cinema and television on the Watergate scandal, which toppled the Richard Nixon presidential administration. But few of them ever mention the presence of Martha Mitchell, the wife of Attorney General John Mitchell. Told entirely through archival footage and audio clips, The Martha Mitchell Effect documents Martha’s support for her husband and President Nixon as a garrulous, press-loving socialite (and the press loved her back; one imagines Martha’s talkativeness gave Nixon and his press team migraines aplenty). On the day of the Watergate break-in, Martha is ditched by Nixon and her husband while in Newport Beach, California for a campaign event. Incensed, her outspokenness about what unfolds next is Icarus-like. The Nixon administration’s attempts to silence her and the general public’s initial outrage towards her truth-telling is a media sensation, a compelling side narrative to the Watergate scandal. In an era in American politics when women were frowned upon by speaking about politics at all (and this remains to some extent), Mitchell is a firebrand. Her death shortly after Nixon’s resignation has mostly consigned her story to contemporary obscurity.
If one is looking for a hellraising liberal truth-teller, look elsewhere. Mitchell is staunchly a Nixonian Republican, and I would question the analytical skills of anyone who thinks otherwise after seeing this film. With enough material for a documentary feature, The Martha Mitchell Effect moves at a breakneck pace, and it has little time to explain the Watergate scandal to anyone without a scant idea about its implications. The absence of present-day voices reflecting upon Mitchell’s de facto role in the Nixon administration and that in Nixon’s downfall leads to a rather abrupt conclusion and no modern-day perspectives (an aside: I struggle to think of anyone occupying an analogous position in American politics today). The Martha Mitchell Effect’s editing is perfunctory, without surprises – a shame for a film relying so heavily on archival material. Instead, the film gets by mostly on the force of Martha Mitchell’s personality and screen presence. She is incandescent as a politico; a pity that the filmmaking cannot rise to such levels.

Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa to Get Imax 3D Format Trailer, the First Ever Instance in Bollywood Hindi Movies
Ajay Devgn is known to take up action-based films with unique scripts. His recent track record with ‘Runway 34’ and ‘Shivaay’ has proven that the actor is versatile as well as a no-nonsense movie star. Along with that, he has also portrayed comical roles successfully, considering the legendary success of the Golmaal series and similar others. Now with ‘Bholaa’, the new Hindi movie that is on cards for the actor, Ajay Devgn yet again will direct and act in the movie, which is a remake of ‘Kaithi’, a Tamil film released in 2019.
Remakes in Bollywood have been quite common for ages. But recently, the trend has caught up with almost every other movie that we see in theatres. For instance, Ajay Devgn’s Dhrishyam and Dhrishyam 2 are also remakes bearing the same name in the Malayalam language. Yet, what is new in Bollywood news and industry is the film ‘Bholaa’, whose trailer is going to be launched soon. Why people are looking forward to the trailer before the film, is that the trailer will be released in Imax 3D format in Hindi.
This is the first-ever trailer in Hindi movies that is being launched in Imax 3D format. The launch will take place in a Mumbai event on the date 6 March 2023. However, for the public, the trailer of ‘Bholaa’ will be seen on the release of 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar' starring Shraddha Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. This movie is releasing on 8 March on Holi, and Bholaa’s trailer will be attached to this film. What is great about ‘Bholaa’ is that the movie has Tabu in the cast with Ajay Devgn, and the pair is a hit not just in recent times, but for a long time now.
The movie will also have stars such as Sanjay Mishra, Gajraj Rao, and Deepak Dobriyal. There are rumors of Abhishek Bachchan doing a cameo in the movie. And perhaps Abhishek’s character will be important in the sequel to ‘Bholaa’. The movie will be released on 30 March. Until then, the fans are waiting with bated breath for the release of the trailer in Imax 3D format.

ok. rrr is the first and only indian movie i have seen in my life. do you have any recs for movies like it? or just movies you like? i trust your taste and my summer is long.
Ofc! Here's a list of some of my favorites:
Telugu
Magadheera (2009)
One of SS Rajamouli's older works and Ram Charan and Kajal absolutely stole my heart in this one. The music is still the loml and it actually also had MM Keeravani directing music
Harsha is falsely implicated for killing Indu's father and she too is kidnapped. But Harsha and Indu share a bond from a previous life, and when he realises this, he sets out to set things straight.
Jai Lava Kusa (2017)
This is one of my all time favorite NTR Jr. movies and he actually plays a triple role (identical triplets)
Identical triplets, Jai, Lava and Kusa, get separated at a young age and follow different paths in life. Jai becomes an evil criminal, Kusa becomes a small-time crook and Lava becomes a bank manager.
Dear Comrade (2019)
TW: sexual assault
This is a movie I hold rly rly close to my heart A) cuz Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika are love and B) the plot was so important especially near the climax.
A hot-headed student union leader falls in love with a state-level cricketer; but soon, his anger issues become a roadblock on his way to unite with her.
Shyam Singha Roy (2021)
If I were ever to marry anyone, Shyam is my template for that person. I absolutely loved Nani's depiction of Shyam and Sai Pallavi's Rosie. Also reincarnation but there's a twist
Vasu is a director who left his former job to make films. His girlfriend is set to play the lead role, but when she is molested and Vasu is accused of committing plagiarism, the young couple's fortunes take a turn for the worse.
EDIT: I'm dumb. I forgot to add Baahubali 1 and 2 (2015 and 2017) which is a must watch and one of the first major modern Pan-India movies
Hindi
The Kashmir Files (2022)
If you're going to watch a Hindi movie, make it this one. This tells the unheard story of the genocide of millions of Kashmiri Pandits by Islamic Terrorists and this genocide has taken place time and time again with absolutely zero media attention.
Shush Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan (2020)
I couldn't have left a list of Indian movies I made in Pride Month without mentioning this movie could I? Ayushmann Khurrana is one of my favorite Hindi actors and the representation in this movie was solid imo. Tbh I live for the song Mere Liye Tum Kaafi Ho in this movie
When two men, Kartik and Aman, fall in love with each other, they face opposition from Aman's family but they attempt to win them over.
3 Idiots (2009)
This one is a classic and works to reverse the mindset a lot of Indian students have to deal with where life = studying and parents' expectations without real time for themselves. As a student it was relatable to me and again, it was fucking hilarious.
In college, Farhan and Raju form a great bond with Rancho due to his positive and refreshing outlook to life. Years later, a bet gives them a chance to look for their long-lost friend whose existence seems rather elusive.
Shershaah (2021)
A biopic of the real life Vikram Batra, I absolutely fell in love with this movie and rediscovered my love for Siddharth Malhotra (the main actor). The music for this movie >>>>
The life of Indian army captain Vikram Batra, awarded with the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest award for valour for his actions during the 1999 Kargil War.
Tamil
Heads up: I don't actually speak Tamil (not well anyways) so I'm just listing movies I saw and liked but I haven't actually seen as many as w telugu/hindi
3 (2012)
I think this intensified my love for Dhanush by about 10000. The music is why Anirudh Ravichander is one of my absolute favorite Indian singers
Ram and Janani are high school sweethearts who eventually get married; however, Janani is mystified when Ram commits suicide all of a sudden and she tries to find out the truth behind his death.
Theri (2016)
And the other love of my life, Vijay Thalapathy. I think this is the first movie of his that I saw with my friend and I honestly got pissed at her for gatekeeping him for so long so that should tell you a lot
When his daughter's life is endangered by a local gang, a man will do whatever it takes to stop them; however, at the same time, his dangerous past slowly resurfaces.
Wow ok this is a lot longer than I intended and I was just getting started lmao but hopefully you find something interesting. If anyone else wants to add other movies feel free to rb, comment and obv feel free to add more languages.
