Next year, I predict we’ll see even bigger screens in our cars. Tech-focused companies, like Byton, have tested this idea in their prototypes; Byton has showcased a 49-inch screen in its M-Byte. Next year may be the year we finally see these massive screens in production-level vehicles. Cadillac kicked off this trend with a massive 38-inch screen in its 2021 Escalade. These bigger screens will likely mean the death of buttons and knobs, which several of our reviewers will certainly miss.

The other big prediction I have for 2020 is seeing more technology integrated into our driving experience. You can already use your phone as a key with Ford and Hyundai, for example. And Kia lets you sync schedules with other drivers, which you can see through a car’s infotainment system. I predict items like GM Marketplace will become more common across automakers. I’ve decided to go big for my 2020 preview—so let’s put to one side what will no doubt be a huge number of electric and hybrid cars for the (relative) masses, and focus instead on two top-tier contenders.

First up is the Ferrari Roma, pictured above, which is interesting not so much for its powertrain as the fact its styling represents such a break from tradition for the Italian firm. For in the Roma, there are generous swoops and curves that give it a softer, more elegant aesthetic than you’ll see in other modern Ferraris. Some have questioned if the Roma, as a result, looks a bit too much like an Aston Martin—but for me, it’s a gloriously individual piece of design that also happens to be home to a wonderful, sculpted interior and a 612bhp 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8. Sounds like a good recipe…

If the Ferrari is special, then the Mercedes-AMG One promises to be quite simply off the chart. What we have here is a Mercedes Formula One drivetrain reimagined to work in a road car. So that’s a 1.6-liter V6 with four electric motors that together make more than 1,000 bhp. There’s also an 8-speed paddle-shift gearbox, pushrod suspension, ceramic brake discs, and a steering wheel that looks like something Lewis Hamilton might use at the weekends. So, yes, it’s going to be a pretty serious bit of kit.

Production is limited to 275 units with the price for each running into the millions. But ownership isn’t what makes cars like this interesting. No, what’s fascinating is seeing just how far (and how fast) the humble motor car can be taken.

First, the Land Rover Defender is returning to the United States. This might not be cause for celebration for our UK Editor, Chris, but on this side of the pond, it’s been over 20 years since Land Rover delivered a properly boxy off-roader.

The new 2020 Defender’s looks may be polarizing, to say the least, but it’s safe to expect this British bulldog will be a genuine mountain goat off-road. For the first time since 1997, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited may finally have some genuine competition. Maybe it’s time for a little CarGurus US vs CarGurus UK rivalry?

Of course, the new Defender can’t steal all the muddy spotlight. We fully expect Ford to pull the cover off the long-awaited and much-anticipated 2021 Bronco this year. It’s been a while since O.J. Simpson sent the last iteration of the Bronco to an early death, and off-roaders and soft-roaders alike have been hankering for a genuine SUV from the blue oval.

While The Juice’s Bronco was a full-size SUV based on the F-Series truck platform, this new one will be a bit smaller, and likely a bit more nimble, as it’s being built on the same platform as the Ranger pickup—sounds perfect for our favorite off-road course.

As one of my colleagues already mentioned, next year will no doubt feature a huge number of announcements regarding electric vehicles (EVs). Automakers have thus far brought more enthusiasm to the electric-car game than the average American driver, but car companies finally seem to be trying to figure out ways to market and build electric vehicles that should appeal not only to tech first adopters and “greenies,” but also to folks who like to drive.

Ford’s debut of the Mustang Mach-E, including prominent mention of its Porsche-beating 0-to-60 times, may mark a relatively new chapter in EV marketing outside the Tesla bubble. Porsche definitely called attention to its 918’s top-notch performance, but that car’s price put it in even rarer air than Tesla’s original Roadster and Model S. The Mach-E, expected to start at less than $45K, should appeal to a considerably more diverse pool of car shoppers than either of Tesla’s original models, and it will no doubt have company in its price range by the end of 2021.

Another relatively new development in the marketing of vehicles capable of running on electricity recently comes from Toyota, which has decided to make the plug-in hybrid version of its massively popular crossover, the RAV4 Prime, the most capable, and most exciting, version of that vehicle available to American buyers. Noting its sub-6-second 0-to-60 time and 302 horsepower in advertisements, Toyota hopes to make up for declining Prius sales with a wide range of hybrids, including sedan models that will face a narrowing pool of American competitors as Ford and GM execute their plans to focus more carefully on crossovers and SUVs in the future.

Whether vehicles running on electricity will ever be able to generate the excitement and sales that gasoline-powered automobiles have enjoyed in their first century remains to be seen, but we look forward to seeing new ads and approaches, as well as more exciting vehicles, next year.

Petersen reopens with four new exhibits

The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles has reopened on a Wednesday through Sunday basis and offers free admission to healthcare workers, first responders and their guests throughout 2021. 

The reopening showcases in-person viewing of three exhibits that opened in 2020 online: “Supercars: A century of Spectacle and Speed,” which showcases the evolution of the supercar; “Extreme Conditions,” which highlights 11 custom competition, recreational, and utilitarian off-roading vehicles; and “Redefining Performance” which features Porsche’s most innovative road and race vehicles.

Also featured is “The Aesthetic of Motoring: 90 Years of Pininfarina,” an exhibition of four milestone examples of the evolution of the Italian design company’s styling. The cars are a 1931 Cadillac Model 452A boattail roadster, a 1947 Cisitalia 202 coupe, a 1966 Ferrari Dino Berlinetta 206 GT prototype and a 2019 Automobili Pininfarina Battista. The Dino will be part of the display only briefly and will be replaced by a 1967 Ferari 365P Berlinetta Speciale “Tre Posti.”

“With its commitment to elegant, aerodynamic design and small-scale production, Pininfarina has created some of the most innovative and revered car designs in the history of the automobile,” Petersen executive director Terry Karges is quoted in the museum’s announcement. “The new exhibit will provide visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at the company’s design history while paying homage to its innovation through these four rarely-seen vehicles.”

Paolo Pininfarina, Pininfarina Group chairman, added, “The models on display perfectly represent our identity, which today is the same as in the 1930s: the centrality of design, an aesthetic sense capable of creating timeless beauty, the obsession with quality, the force of a tradition that combines industry, technology and stylistic research.” 

Tickets must be purchased in advance through the museum website. Face masks will be required of all visitors and the museum will employ social distancing guidelines.

Greenwood Corvette at Hall of Fame

Joining the vehicles on display at the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America museum in Daytona Beach, Florida, is the “Spirit of Le Mans” Chevrolet Corvette raced by John Greenwood, who put the car on the IMSA-class pole and posted the fastest straightaway speed at the French race in 1976.

“Few cars say American motorsports louder and prouder than a big-block, ‘Stars and Stripes’ John Greenwood Corvette,” said museum president George Levy.

“Detroit brothers John and Burt Greenwood stunned the racing world with a succession of rapid Corvettes,” the museum noted in its news release. “In them, John won the 1970 and ’71 SCCA A Production national titles and took a class win with television star Dick Smothersat the 1972 12 Hours of Sebring. John also stood on the top step at the 1974 IMSA Championship Finals at Daytona International Speedway…  and captured the 1975 SCCA Trans-Am title among a bevy of other wins, poles and fastest laps.”

The “Stars and Stripes” Corvette, wearing race number 76 during the American bicentennial year, has a unique wide-body fabrication, generated more than 1,000 pounds of downforce and had a 467cid all-aluminum V8 rated at up to 725 horsepower.

New British car museum

After being delayed in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Great British Car Journey museum plans to open in late May in the former Wire Works site in Ambergate, Derbyshire, UK. A 150-car collection is being set up as an interactive, table-led trip through the story of the British auto industry and its role in the global transportation revolution.

“The enforced break, through both ill health and the pandemic, means Great British Car Journey is coming back stronger having given us the opportunity to acquire even more fantastic British made and designed classic cars,” according to co-founder Richard Usher, former owner of Auto Windscreens and of the Blyton Park racing circuit.

In addition to the cars, the museum will offer a “Drive Dad’s Car” experience featuring more than 30 British vehicles, from an Austin Seven to a Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, that can be driven with an instructor on an on-site driving route.

AACA Museum pioneer passes

The AACA Museum in Hershey, Pennsylvania, has announced the death of Richard Taylor, one of the museum’s “founding fathers,” after a lengthy illness. 

Taylor, of Mansfield, Ohio, not only was among those pushing for the establishment of the Antique Automobile Club of America’s museum, he was its first president and used his expertise from Taylor Brothers Construction to make the best use of its resources. The museum also was one of the first museums in the US to employ geothermal climate control.

The American Muscle Car Museum in Melbourne, Florida, expects more than 300 vehicles at its “Celebration of Cars” festival scheduled from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on March 27. Featured will be “Ragtops and Roadsters.”

The Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California, reopens on weekends starting March 27, though for the time being, tickets must be reserved in advance through the museum’s website.

Autobooks-Aerobooks in Burbank, California, features Dave Wolin and his IMSA RS and Showroom Stock racing books from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on March 27.

The Mustang Owner’s Museum in Concord, North Carolina, hosts a Fords on Sunday car show on March 28. Among featured vehicles will be a Mustang II drag car.

The cars may have gone to auction but Muscle Car City in Punta Gorda, Florida, still has an open gift shop and StingRays restaurant and on March 28 from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. stages its monthly flea market.

The Ford Mustang has been motoring along now for 55 years and to celebrate its longevity the blue oval guys have produced a special edition Titled the Mustang 55. This special edition will be available from August onwards with a range of different styling packages and trim options.

April 17th was National Mustang Day, which showed the special edition model for the first time at the 2019 New York Auto Show and now full details of the model have been finally revealed. On the outside the new Mustang receives 19-inch alloy wheels, optional rear spoiler, black badging, painted roof and striped decals, along with a updated black grille. There’s also the options for fastback andthe convertible models.

The interior gets temperature control seats, a cool 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, SYNC 3 connectivity system and 8 inch infotainment system as standard. Opt. for the six speed manual and the car receives a lovely moulded shift knob, with the 10-speed automatic getting other goodies.

Powertrain wise, the Mustang55 grabs the flat-plane crank, Coyote 5.0-litre V8 from current models which produces 444bhp, which equates to a 0–62mph time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. No details as yet if this model is going to be limited edition and for how long it will be available.

Other Mustang models have been given upgrades such as the 2.3-litre EcoBoost which has borrowed some elements from the Shelby models. These include a Magnetic Grey California grille, which includes an old-style classic tri-bar pony badge and active valve performance exhaust. It also has the new ‘Good Neighbour Mode’ (yes, that’s the correct spelling in Europe) which limits the exhaust noise for all those finicky neighbors. The Mustang Bullitt edition will also be available for a second year due to popular demand. Also new are four new colors in the form of Twister Orange, Grabber Lime, Iconic Silver and Lucid Red.

So, where can you get hold of one of these Mustang55’s? They are only going to be available in the UK, which may seem an odd choice on the surface, but makes total sense. Since the Mustang was released in native hand drive in Europe, the pony has been smashing it in sales. The Europeans have seemingly taken to the more raw and exciting feel of the Mustang compared to the usual European performance vehicles, so why not give them a special edition model. As the Mustang will be one of the confirmed models moving forward for Ford, it’s now about global sales, not just domestic which will secure the future of any car model. If a territory takes to a certain car, it makes sense to capitalize on the situation. This could also pave the way for other muscle car models to go native hand drive and hit Europe. Maybe a future Hellcat with the steering wheel on the other side?

New Ford Focus ST priced from under £30,000 in UK The new Ford Focus ST will be available from £29,495 in the UK, with first customer deliveries due to begin next month. Sources say that the entry-level variant will be the ST hatch in 187bhp 2.0-litre Ecoblue guise, the most powerful diesel powertrain ever available with the Focus. In estate form, the diesel ST starts from £30,595.  The 276bhp 2.3-litre Ecoboost petrol-powered variant will be available from £31,995, rising to £33,095 for the estate version.  The 2019 Focus will no longer be available in ST-2 and ST-3 forms, but high-spec ST-Line trim can be paired with a 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine producing 180bhp, from £23,500.  Ford says the latest iteration of its Volkswagen Golf GTI rival will offer “the most responsive and agile Focus ST driving experience ever, on road and track”, thanks to the model’s new C2 platform and a host of new technology derived from halo models such as the Ford GT supercar and the Mustang.  It is the first front-wheel-drive Ford to get an electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD), intended to enhance cornering stability. Rev-matching technology is available with the six-speed manual gearbox. A seven-speed automatic is also available.  Selectable drive modes are another first for the Focus ST. They comprise Slippery/Wet, Normal and Sport, plus a Track mode for versions equipped with the Performance pack. Driving in Europe after Brexit: what will I need, and are there different rules?

Brexit is looming, and the UK may end up leaving the European Union without a deal if nothing is agreed by Friday 12th April 2019. Leaving without a deal will mean that current rules for driving abroad will no longer apply, so make sure you know what you may need to take and how a no-deal scenario might affect you.

In this guide we’ll cover IDPs, green cards, hire cars, taking a trailer onto the continent and more. Below, we also list out the things you’ll need to do when driving abroad, if the UK doesn’t secure a deal.

Driving abroad to-do list:

Buy an International Driving Permit Inform your insurance provider Get a green card Buy a GB sticker Register your trailer (if applicable) Get a local driving license before 12 April (if staying in the EU for a longer period)

International Driving Permits

If the UK hasn’t struck a deal by 12th April, you may need additional documents to prevent getting into hot water. You may need to buy an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local post office, which costs £5.50 and takes a matter of minutes to complete at the counter. Although it’s essentially a European translation of your driving licence, you’ll also need to take your UK photocard driver’s licence.

There are two main types of IDP that you might need if you plan to drive in Europe after Brexit, and if your route includes France and Spain you’ll need both types. If this affects you, you’ll need to pay for two IDPs at the post office. Try to get into a country that requires an IDP without one, and you’ll either be turned away or fined. Depending on the type of IDP you choose, it is valid for either 12 months or three years.

Green cards

Unless the UK and EU manage to reach an agreement about the UK’s departure, you may need to have a green card when you drive abroad - in addition to an IDP. A green card is a document that shows you are insured to drive overseas, and can be issued by your insurance provider through a quick phone call. You should always inform them when you are driving abroad to make sure you’ll be covered.

The document needs to be printed on green paper, and must have at least 15 days cover on it.

Hiring a car abroad after Brexit

It varies, but you may need an IDP to drive a hire car in Europe from mid-April. Check with your hire company to make sure. If they do require one, make sure you get one before you go, as you either won’t be able to hire a car or you’ll have to take out a more expensive policy from the hire company.

What happens if you have an accident?

Up until now, your insurance company would deal with the other party if you have an accident in Europe - and if they wouldn’t, you could go to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) and they’d sort it out.

In the event of a no-deal situation, neither are expected to help you. Make sure you ring up your insurance company before you go to find out whether they will contact the other insurance company in the event of a collision. If they won’t, you’ll have to deal with a foreign insurance company. This is likely to be a lot of hassle, and we’d recommend packing a translation device if you’re not a fluent speaker - expect the proceedings to be in the native language of the country in which you had the accident.

GB stickers and correct number plates

When travelling in the EU after Brexit, you may eed to have a GB sticker stuck on the back of your car. If your car’s number plates have the blue EU logo on them, you previously haven’t needed a GB sticker, but Brexit rule changes mean you’ll need one as well.

Can I tow a trailer in Europe after Brexit?

Yes you can, and this is an aspect of driving abroad that won’t change much in the event of a no-deal. You may have to register your trailer, but only if it’s a commercial trailer weighing over 750kg or a non-commercial trailer that’s heavier than 3,500kg. The trailer needs to be registered with the DVLA, will need a separate registration plate, and you’ll need to be able to produce the trailer registration certificate if you’re asked for it abroad.

Will expats be affected when driving abroad?

British residents of a European country may need to swap your UK licence for a local licence before 12th April. If the UK crashes out without a deal, you’ll no longer be able to do this - not easily, anyway. Your UK licence won’t be valid outside Britain any more, and you may have to take a local driving test to continue driving. The Government’s Department for Transport (DfT) has advised emigrants to switch their license to a European one as soon as possible, as extra demand will lead to queues and longer processing times.

Will EU nationals be affected when driving in the UK?

The current arrangements for EU nationals won’t change after Brexit. If you have either an EU or an EEA licence, you won’t need a separate UK licence, and won’t need an IDP to drive over here. EU and EEA car or motorcycle licence holders who are (or become) UK residents can drive in the UK using these licences until they are 70-years-old or for up until 3 years after they become resident, whichever date is the later. At this point an application would need to be made for a UK licence. It's worth noting that there are restrictions to license exchanges if an European licence holder passed their test outside the EU or EEA. If this describes you, you may need to take a UK driving test.

Will time show that 2019 was the year the electric car broke through? There’s certainly been no shortage of new products using battery power, from the Porsche Taycan and latest Nissan Leaf to the impossible-to-ignore Tesla Cybertruck.

Combine these new cars with an improving charging infrastructure and you’d expect the tide of public opinion might start showing signs of softening towards EVs. That was certainly the case according to our own research, which revealed that the number of consumers who consider themselves as likely to own an EV in the next five years jumped to 26% in 2019, up from 15% in 2018. This is most likely just the start, too: Who would bet against that number having grown significantly by this time next year?

Back in the world of internal combustion, my honorable mention for 2019 must go to the latest generation of Porsche 911, the 992. Not only does it masterfully update the legendary 911 format for this hi-tech age with its fabulous interior and ultra-sleek exterior, but in terms of performance, the 992 moves even the basic, non-GT or Turbo models firmly into supercar territory. In fact, if I had to narrow down my automotive highlights of 2019 into just one, fleeting moment, it’d be the surreal three-point-something seconds it took our four-wheel drive, PDK-equipped 911 test car to fire from 0-62 mph.

Electric vehicles might be coming, but internal combustion is still more than capable of taking your breath away.

I’m struck by the number of performance wagons and SUVs we saw introduced in 2019. Fans of the Audi S4 Avant rejoiced when the German automaker revealed it was bringing its RS 6 Avant to North America. It packs a 4.0-liter V8 that makes 591 hp and 590 lb-ft, hits 60 mph in about 3 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 189 mph.

Just as exciting was the introduction of the RS Q8, a performance SUV packing the same power as the RS 6 Avant. We had a chance to take a closer look at the 2020 RS Q8 at the 2019 LA Auto Show, and it adds plenty of features aside from the engine, like 23-inch wheels and an RS-specific gloss-black grille.

And in the EV space, electric trucks took center stage: Bollinger brought us a production-ready version of its B2 electric truck, Tesla unveiled its unique Cybertruck, and Rivian gets closer to its production-ready model of the R1T. But are truck shoppers willing to make the switch from gas-powered to electric? It’s hard to say. In our yearly Truck Sentiment Survey, we found that 70% of shoppers were willing to switch brands, which is good news for these startup truckmakers. However, their high prices may keep shoppers away.

With one colleague celebrating electric vehicles and another performance wagons and SUVs, I feel obliged to mention one 2019 highlight they didn’t: Ford’s live-streamed debut of the 2021 Mustang Mach-E just before the LA Auto Show. Ford’s decision to put the name and badge of its mighty Mustang on an electric crossover generated controversy, of course, but a pony-equipped vehicle with up to 300 miles of range, usable seating for 5, almost 60 cubic feet of cargo room, and a 0-to-60 time of less than 4 seconds sounds great to me.

But my 2019 highlights came from two automakers CarGurus has found compelling for years, Mazda and Subaru, in the form of strong new versions of proven models. The redesigned 2019 Mazda3 earned rave reviews from almost everyone who drove it, including George Kennedy, and the updated 2019 CX-5, which we sampled in the snow at the end of last year, also earned praise from a wide variety of reviewers.

A new version of our favorite Subaru model also arrived in 2019. We got a chance to drive the 2020 Subaru Outback back in September and enjoyed it quite a bit. The new edition of this wagon/crossover finally offers a turbocharged engine under its hood, which drivers living at high altitudes should particularly appreciate. Our recently published review of the 2020 Outback found it strong from functionality and cost-effectiveness standpoints, which we consider hallmarks of the Subaru brand.

This time of year, everyone’s talking about electrification and progress and the hot new thing. But as anyone with their eyes open can clearly see, 2019 was the year of the throwback.

First, Chevy resurrected the Blazer as a stylish, sharp, and sexy crossover complete with nearly $1,400 worth of 21-inch tires. Sure, the new 2019 Blazer had its detractors, namely those bemoaning its lack of off-road performance, but I, for one, welcome our new crossover overlords.

And it’s not as if 2019 didn’t bring us plenty of rugged capability, either. Carrying on with the throwback theme, both Ford and Jeep returned legendary truck nameplates to the market, with the 2019 Ranger and 2020 Gladiator.

Finally, the highlight of the year for this writer was the long-awaited return of the Toyota Supra. Partnering with BMW gave the new coupe a brilliant Bavarian heart and soul (or engine and chassis, for our more literal readers) to pair with its stunning exterior styling. Sure, the 2020 GR Supra’s interior might feel a bit familiar, and the lack of a manual transmission will cut it off some enthusiasts’ shopping lists, but it’s safe to say that no other car on CarGurus’ 2019 test-drive review roster received as much attention at gas stations, grocery stores, race tracks, or anywhere else we drove it.
