Pickup Trucks Getting Huge. Got Problem With That?
A FEW MONTHS ago, on an ordinary day in an unremarkable
Costco
parking lot, I was nearly squashed by an unusually large pickup. Thank God I was wearing a mask.
As that chrome grille closed on me like a man-eating Norelco shaver, time slowed. It seemed I was watching myself from afar, being nimble for a man my age, darting from the path of a towering, limousine-black pickup with temporary plates, whose driver barely checked his pace. Jerk.
What the hell was that thing? A 2020 GMC Sierra HD Denali? It was huge! The domed hood was at forehead level. The paramedics would have had to extract me from the grille with a spray hose, like Randall Jarrell’s ball-turret gunner.
He didn’t even see me.
Later, returning to my car, I noticed something: The parking lot was dotted with similarly enormous luxury pickups—many new, many taking up two spaces: Ram,
Ford,
Chevy, GMC. They stood out like Percherons in a herd of Shetland ponies.
“ Are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? Both. The average pickup gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019. ”
What is going on here? When did pickups get so big? And why are XL-sized pickups so big now?
I know. Pickup trucks at Costco. Film at 11. Except that in April, U.S. sales of pickups surpassed automobiles for the first time ever—about 112 years, give or take. Trucks and truck-based sport-utilities now account for roughly 70% of new vehicles sold in the U.S.
How we came to be Pickup Nation is a longer story (cheap gas, the Chicken Tax, IRS Section 179, marketing). But this year, to help move the tin during the pandemic, U.S. auto makers laid out a bounty of discounts and cheap financing, including 0% interest for 84 months and deferred-payment plans.
“Pickups without a doubt benefited from the great deals,” said Mark Schirmer, spokesperson for market service providers Cox Automotive. “And the deals were particularly great for consumers buying expensive vehicles.” The data suggest these incentives also juiced a boomlet in XL-sized, heavy-duty pickups, otherwise known as ¾-ton and 1-ton pickups, for private use.
That’s right: Gucci cowboys. Historically aimed at commercial customers, sole proprietors, horse-haulers and mega-RVers, heavy-duty pickups are stronger and taller than ordinary (half-ton) trucks, with cabs mounted high above reinforced frame rails and heavy, long-travel suspensions. But HD trucks have evolved in the past decade, irradiated with the same prestige-luxury rays as light-duty trucks.
Behold MotorTrend 2020 Truck of the Year, the Ram Heavy-Duty. In Limited trim (about $65,000 with four-wheel drive but before options) the 2500 HD sports an elaborate chromified grille that gleams like a tea service. Its flight deck glows with untrucky amenities such as acoustically insulated glass; active noise canceling; 12-inch center touch screen; wood trim, premium leather—all paired with a maximum 19,680-pound towing capacity. With the optional cab lights, it measures over 6-feet-9 inches tall.
Thus has been born a uniquely American vehicle type: the mega-luxury mega-pickup.
MEASURE FOR MEASURE
The dimensions of Chevy’s 2020 Silverado 2500 HD LTZ. Just how big?
Photo: Chevrolet
81.85 in. wide
79.82 in. tall
249.95 in. long
It seems to be resonating. While sales of Silverado light-duty were off 18.6% in the second quarter, sales of the HD model sales were off less than a point. GMC’s light-duty Sierra was down 9.5%, while sales of our menacing new friend, the Sierra HD, were up 7.6% in the second quarter and 21.5% year-to-date.
Ford and
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
don’t break out HD sales from pickups overall. However, Ram’s average transaction price in the second quarter soared above $50,000, according to a Cox Automotive analysis of data from Kelley Blue Book. Ford F-Series sales fell 23% (to 180,825 units) but its ATP was mostly unaffected—$51,688, the highest among pickups.
In July, J.D. Power declared Sierra HD the king of the bro-dozers, placing it first in its 2020 U.S. APEAL Study of Large Heavy-Duty Pickups, which tracks owners’ excitement and emotional attachment in the first 90 days.
“The front end was always the focal point,” GM designer Karan Moorjani told Muscle Cars & Trucks e-zine. “We spent a lot of time making sure that when you stand in front of this thing it looks like it’s going to come get you.”
Mission accomplished.
But are pickups really getting bigger, on average, or do they just look scarier? The answers are somewhat and definitely. The average pickup on the road gained 1,142 pounds between 1990 and 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and 730 pounds since 2000.
“One of the most significant changes in that time was the arrival of crew-cab configurations, which added cab space to make them more family and work friendly,” said Mike Levine, Ford spokesperson.
In 2011, a change in the way the feds calculate vehicle fuel economy (the so-called “footprint rule”) gave domestic truck makers incentive to go big. Ever since, GMC, Chevy, Ram and Ford have been locked in a competitive feedback loop chasing best-in-class attributes and capacities—the “towing/hauling” wars. For MY 2019, for example, Ram’s 1500 Crew Cab gained 3.9 inches in overall length over a 4.1-inch longer wheelbase. In the same model-year, the Chevy Silverado gained 1.7 inches in length on a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase.
As a result, new light-duty pickup dimensions are approaching those of heavy-duty pickups. While the 2021 F-150 is about 18 inches shorter than the equivalent F-250, it is the same width (79.9). Mr. Levine noted that the company has gone to a common-cab design, using the same four-door living quarters for both light- and heavy-duty models.
“ ‘The face of these trucks is where the action is, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.’ ”
Ask any kid with a crayon. If you draw the box in the middle bigger, you have to make the ones on the end bigger, too.
Which brings us to the 2020 Silverado HD—10 inches longer, 1.8 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the previous model. The big Chevy’s challenging kisser comprises a thick, knee-high bumper; a central grille opening; several sets of lighting assemblies; a full-width transverse element helpfully informing with the message CHEVROLET…and then, above that, between very square corners, is a whole other layer, then a peaked hood with a central inlet. This hood line meets the base of the windshield about 6 inches above the side window sill.
Another cause of facial swelling? Marketing. “Full-size pickups are generally identical in profile,” Mr. Schirmer said. “The face of these trucks is where the action is; a Ford has to say Ford from head on, a Chevy must shout Chevy. Every pickup has become a rolling brand billboard and the billboards are big.”
You don’t have to be Steven Pinker to see that truck designers are leaning into the bully with these lantern-jawed bumpers and walls of chrome. Detroit’s blithe codifications of purposeful and powerful pickup design fail to describe the intimidation factor from the outside.
“A few brands, Ram and Ford, have taken to an overscale brand identity [and] applied it onto the grille,” said Kimberly Marte, associate professor of design at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. “The Chevy team did benchmarking of new models and followed the trend.”
It’s not clear how long pickup designs can keep getting their chrome on. In 2018 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study examining the connection between SUV design and pedestrian fatalities. In a separate study released in June, IIHS found fatal single-vehicle crashes involving SUVs striking pedestrians increased 81% from 2009 to 2016.
While IIHS studied SUVs and not pickups, “The key is the geometry of the front end, the high and flat shape,” said Becky Mueller, a senior research engineer for IIHS. “It’s like hitting a wall.”
XL-pickups’ high-rising hoods also create significant blind spots just ahead of the vehicle. I know because apparently I was in one of them. While truck makers like Ford offer automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection systems as standard equipment on most trims, and forward-view cameras as an option, such systems are not mandatory, as they would be in Europe.
NHTSA proposed that new pedestrian-safety tests for SUVs and trucks be included in the New Car Assessment Program in 2015. But as of this writing, the agency had not issued guidance on new standards. When asked, the industry trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation had no comment.
And what if the next administration should issue pickup-pedestrian safety rules? Could the extra tall hoods and bluff grilles, the sightlines, the scale, the very form language of the traditional American pickup ever be made pedestrian safe? “Of course not,” said Ms. Marte. “No way.”
So watch yourself at Costco.
TOO BIG FOR ITS BRITCHES?
Sizing up Chevy’s 2020 Silverado 2500HD
Photo: Chevrolet
HIGH-END HOOD: Modern pickups like the Silverado 2500 HD LT with Z71 Off-Road Package appear huge not just because roofs have gotten taller (topping out around 80 inches), but because hoods have grown relative to a truck’s overall height.
KING-SIZE BED: The 2020 Silverado 2500 HD Crew Cab with Standard Bed is 10.3 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider, and 1.6 inches taller than the 2019 model.
GAUDY GRILLE: The vast chrome rictus of Chevy’s Silverado has been coolly received by some critics and customers. But Silverado sales are up, and there’s a booming business in aftermarket grilles.
A STEP UP: To assist you in boarding its very tall seat—which maintains proportionality with the height of the hood, the 2021 Silverado HD High Country is available with power running boards that automatically slide out to meet you.

MORE SWANK, LESS SCHLEP
How Ford’s uber-popular F-150 pickup has changed shape and style since 1995
PICKUPS AND SUVS have become the vehicles of choice for U.S. drivers over the last 25 years. Along the way, they’ve also become less trucklike, emphasizing comfort as well as capability. Take the F-150, the flagship of Ford’s F-Series, America’s bestselling vehicles 43 years running, which has morphed from rural work truck into a daily-driving people-mover as suburbanites ditched minivans in droves. The bestselling F-150 of 1995 was a rigid two-door set with a 6.5-foot bed; today’s bestselling F-150 has four doors, copious creature comforts, and a cargo box that’s a full foot shorter. —Aaron Stern

Buying a Used Truck? These 5 Rule the Worksite
The best used trucks have come a long way from the days of basic bench seats and vinyl upholstery. Modern trucks are more powerful and more capable than ever, but they are also more comfortable, as automakers have responded to the changing demands of truck owners.
In this guide, we’ve highlighted five rugged trucks that are ideally suited for the worksite. If you don’t find the perfect work truck here, check out listings on CarGurus, where you can narrow down your search based on bed-size, cab-size, trim, engine, options, and more.
1. Ford F-150
Years: 2017-2019 Trim: XLT SuperCab 8’ Bed 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 — $30,000
The Ford F-150 SuperCab has a clamshell door design, which means you have to open the large front door to open the smaller rear half-door. If you plan on mostly using the front seats, this is fine, but if you plan on hauling the kids around a lot, you’d do well to step up to the SuperCrew version of the F-150 with its full four-door setup.
If you want the convenience of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto look for a model from 2017 onwards with Ford’s SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system.
The 2017 F-150 comes standard with a 282-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and many XLT trims are available with one of the more powerful EcoBoost V6 engines. For 2018, there was a shakeup in the powertrain offerings, including a more powerful base V6, now making 290 horsepower.

2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Years: 2017-2018 Trim: LT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $23,000 — $30,000
The previous generation of Silverado was coming to an end in 2018, which means Chevrolet added extra equipment to entice buyers who might otherwise have waited for the new model.
Step inside and not much has changed from this older truck to the latest version. The control layout is nearly identical, and the latter years of the LT trim come with the MyLink infotainment system that provides a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Unlike the F-150, which has clamshell doors on its extended cab truck, the extended cab version of the Silverado utilizes conventional second row doors. Many models also feature a front bench with a middle seat that folds into a center console.
While the standard engine is a 4.3-liter V6, those wanting more power should keep an eye out for a model with the 5.3-liter V8, which puts out a stout 355 horsepower. All versions of the Silverado come with the helpful bed corner steps.

3. Ram 1500
Years: 2016-2018 Trim: SLT Quad Cab 4×4 Approx price: $17,000 – $27,000
Ram does things a bit differently from Ford and Chevy. The truck-maker acknowledged and responded to the idea that its pickups were being used for a lot of things other than worksite duties, such as commutes and road trips. As a result, the Ram 1500 does away with traditional leaf spring suspension, and instead features a multi-link setup at the rear to give it a more comfortable ride. But that doesn’t mean the Ram 1500 can’t handle a bit of work.
The Ram 1500 comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6 making 305 horsepower, but many vehicles from these years can be found with the 395-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. Some are even available with the EcoDiesel V6, which offers V8-levels of torque with improved efficiency.
Like the Silverado’s Double Cab, the Ram 1500’s Quad Cab uses conventionally opening second-row doors. Inside, the Ram 1500 uses high-quality cabin materials, and has easy-to-use controls. The SLT comes with power windows and locks, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Higher trims come with a larger touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (starting in 2018), and the RamBox cargo system. There’s no doubt that, for the money, the Ram 1500 offers a comfortable ride, a strong base V6, and a spacious interior.
Search for a Ram 1500 on CarGurus
2016 GMC Sierra All Terrain SLT
4. GMC Sierra 1500
Years: 2015-2016 Trim: SLT Double Cab 4×4 Approx price: $19,000 – $30,000
The previous generation of both GM trucks (Silverado and Sierra) have more conventional styling than their current counterparts.
The Sierra SLE is very similar to the Silverado LT, in that it is slightly elevated from the base truck and provides some welcome creature comforts. The SLE can be had with many different options; while most will come with the basic 6-speaker stereo and USB port, others may be found with the optional GMC IntelliLink infotainment system. This is similar to Chevy MyLink and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The SLE trim comes standard with the 4.3-liter V8 engine, but many can be found with the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine. If you don’t need four-wheel drive, you can save a few dollars by choosing a rear-wheel-drive model.
Search for a used GMC Sierra 1500 on CarGurus
5. Toyota Tundra
Years: 2012-2016 Trim: SR5 Double Cab Approx price: $20,000 – $30,000
If you’re looking for something a bit different from the Big Three, the Toyota Tundra is big, spacious, and comes with standard V8 power for all the years we are recommending here. Despite being a bit long-in-the-tooth, Tundras hold their value well, with prices for the SR5 being close to that of Big Three trucks with similar bed/cab/powertrain configurations.
The standard engine in the Tundra is a 4.6-liter V8 making 310 horsepower, though many SR5s can be found with the optional 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. While it may seem advantageous to go for the less powerful V8 to save a few dollars, it is actually less efficient than the larger V8.
The Tundra has a very spacious cabin. All trims, including the base SR come equipped with the Entune infotainment system, which was updated for 2016. It features a 6.1-inch touchscreen, but while it is very easy to use, it does lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500: Which do you have to Buy, 2019 or 2020
Most significant changes: New-for-2020 turbo-diesel 3.0-liter six-cylinder now available on LT, RST, LTZ and High Country models; 6.2-liter V-8 and 10-speed automatic now available on supervisor and RST models; 5.3-liter V-8 now paired with 10-speed automatic and standard on LT supervisor and available on High Country; 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder are often had in Custom trims; trailering tech that debuted on 2020 Silverado 2500/3500 now available on the 1500 Price changes: Base WT starting price increases by $100, but price changes vary counting on powertrain chosen for trim level On sale in chevy dealer near belmont Now Which do you have to buy, 2019 or 2020? 2020. With all the new tech and more powertrain options from top to bottom, a 2020 should be the straightforward choice unless you’re trying to find an absolutely bare-bones work truck.
Chevrolet’s Silverado lineup may have slipped to 3rd place in pickup sales for the 2019 civil year , but the updates offered for the 2020 1500 model could also be enough to assist the Bow-Tie brand reclaim its usual second-place spot within the truck sales hierarchy. Related: 2020 pickup of the Year Nominees The most significant powertrain update is that the all-new turbo-diesel 3.0-liter baby Duramax as an option for LT, RST, LTZ and High Country trims. We’ve driven the new diesel and love it , albeit it's going to not always be ready to meet its EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 23/33/27 mpg city/highway/combined (in 4×2 configuration). We liked it such a lot , in fact, that the diesel-powered 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel is one among our 2020 pickup of the Year nominees. Significant changes have also been made in powertrain availability. Chevy is expanding the amount of choices for shoppers who might want more power for his or her pickup without the more luxurious interiors of the LTZ or High Country trims or their higher prices by chevy dealership gastonia nc making the 6.2-liter V-8 and 10-speed available within the lower supervisor and RST trims. Also available for the 6.2-liter may be a Performance Upgrade Package ($1,875) that adds a higher-flow air intake and cat-back exhaust and increases horsepower from 420 to 435 and torque from 460 pounds-feet to 469.
The 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine also will be available on the Custom trim level (it’s standard within the RST and LT). The 5.3-liter V-8 is now paired with the 10-speed automatic as standard equipment on the LT supervisor and available as an option on the four-wheel-drive High Country; the 5.3-liter V-8 with an eight-speed is standard on the LTZ and High Country and available on the LT and RST. chevrolet charlotte nc advanced trailering technology — one among the explanations the 2020 Silverado 2500/3500 is one among our pickup of the Year nominees for 2020 is now available for the smaller Silverado 1500, including the “transparent trailer” feature that uses cameras to supply a rear view when trailering as if the trailer weren’t there.
Trailering side mirrors, a lower-tech thanks to make trailering safer and easier, also are available. The last camera trick Chevy has up its sleeve is that the availability of an adaptive control system that uses a camera mounted behind the car mirror to stay the truck at a secure following distance. This feature are going to be available on LT, LTZ and High Country models chevrolet dealership charlotte. As for pricing, the bottom 2020 WT trim level starts at $29,895 (all prices include destination) — $100 quite the 2019’s $29,795. But as shoppers go up the trim levels and standard powertrains change (and choices are added), prices between model years could change significantly. With all the new technology and increased choice for consumers, the 2020 Silverado 1500 is a simple choice over the 2019 — counting on the budget

The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado is a Tough-Looking Midsize Pickup
Eager to explore rocky trails and sandy dunes in a midsize pickup truck? The Chevrolet Colorado is a solid option, and now emerging from a cloud of wispy desert dust is the updated 2021 version
Changes focus on appearance; mechanical specifications remain the same. The new look adds aggression to bring the 2021 Colorado more in line with bigger Chevrolet trucks, and help it stand out at trailheads or in the hardware store parking lot.
WT, LT, and Z71 trims get updated front fascia with a new layout, logos, and skid plate. The first two get a Chevy bowtie badge finished in gold, while the off-road-oriented Z71 trim will have a black bowtie. All Colorados get a new tailgate with embossed Chevrolet lettering, much like what’s seen on the Silverado 1500 and Silverado 2500 HD.
The top-level, trail-tuned Colorado ZR2 gets additional revisions to signify its toughness. Like before, a trim-specific fascia leaves the front tires more exposed for a maximized approach angle. For 2021, the grille is wider and more open, featuring cut out Chevrolet lettering to allow a bit of extra airflow. Skid plates and red tow hooks help signify its purpose—as if the lifted suspension, wider track, and huge knobby tires weren’t enough. Locking differentials and phenomenal DSSV dampers from Multimatic carry over.
Also new and exclusive to the Z71 and ZR2 is a very in-vogue “Sand Dune Metallic” beige exterior paint, which should only look better the dustier it gets.
Previously a comparison test winner, we’re counting on the refreshed Colorado to be just as likeable as its earlier versions. Though pricing has not been announced, and the ZR2 won’t debut until the SEMA show in November, there’s already a competition-ready version of the new Colorado. It’s built up and ready to take on the 2019 Laughlin Desert Classic, an off-road race held in the sands of southern Nevada.

Eighteen LEGO® Master Builders spent more than 2,000 hours hand-selecting and placing each of the 334,544 pieces on the model.
Chevrolet revealed the first-ever full-size LEGO® Silverado at the North American International Auto Show. The truck is a continuation of the partnership between Chevy and Warner Bros. that began in 2017 with the LEGO® Batmobile.
As an exact replica of the Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss, LEGO® Silverado has unique working lights and graphic details.
The 2019 Silverado 1500 recalls the Chevy trucks of the 1950s and ‘60s through the “CHEVROLET” name featured on the tailgate. Just like the real-life Trail Boss, the LEGO® model includes larger cutouts in the class-exclusive CornerStep bumpers.

Hey, Bugatti, you're not the only one who can fashion a full-size car out of toy bricks as a publicity stunt. Chevy has enlisted the help of students from Oxford Community School and Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary to createa one-for-one rendition of its 2019 Silverado 1500 LT Trailboss using Lego's signature bricks. The project required 334,544 pieces and more than 2,000 hours of assembly from 18 workers, but it's uncannily accurate with the subtle contours and decals of the real thing.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Diesel Gets 33 MPG HWY
Chevrolet has released EPA fuel economy numbers for the new diesel-powered Silverado 1500, and they’re impressive. The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 3.0-liter Duramax engine delivers up to 23/33 mpg city/highway.
This number puts it ahead of the 2019 Ford F-150 diesel, the most economical Ford truck at 22/30 mpg. When opting for four-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive, fuel economy on the Silverado diesel drops to 23/29 mpg, but it’s still ahead of a comparable F-150 diesel at 21/28 mpg. The current Ram 1500 Classic diesel nets 20/27 mpg, but these numbers are practically irrelevant given that the automaker is coming out with a brand new 2020 EcoDiesel. Fuel economy has not yet been announced for the new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, so we don’t know if Chevy will be able to hold its claim to best-in-category fuel economy. But we do know Ram also plans to get ahead of Ford.
Cargo capacities for the Silverado 1500 diesel are less impressive than its fuel economy numbers. When paired with four-wheel drive, it can tow up to 9,300 pounds and has a max payload of 1,870 pounds. GM says this capability will meet the towing needs of 90 percent of light-duty customers. But this towing ability is well below the Ford diesel, although we weren’t satisfied with the Ford’s towing performance in our Truck of the Year tests. Meanwhile, Ram boasts a 12,560-pound towing capacity on its new diesel.
The Silverado 1500 diesel packs a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine making 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, paired to a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic. In a recent test drive we called it a sweetheart of an engine; it feels peppy and delivers a healthy surge of torque.
The diesel engine is available on the LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country trims. On the two lower trims, it’s a $3,890 price premium over the standard 2.7-liter turbo-four, and on the higher trims, it’s a $2,495 option. Deliveries of the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the turbodiesel engine are expected to begin this fall.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss Costum, Colors, Release Date – Recently I received the opportunity to fall behind the tire of most of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss truck collection in Jackson Golf hole, Wyo.
