Absolutely this too! Sam who was so willing to put his faith in the divine. Sam who was ready to believe that some faith healers really were doing God's work and that one of them would save his brother. Sam, who when met with Dean's derision in Houses of the Holy tells him "I do pray every day. I have for a long time." Yes, always, Sam who was so excited to meet the angels, only for Cas to refer to him as "the boy with the demon blood." Sam, who had to not only learn that he was Lucifer's true vessel but actually take on that role in the apocalypse. Sam, who was told by Billie that he was "unclean, in the biblical sense." Sam who was so willing to believe that his visions of Lucifer were messages from God. Sam, who was willing, even after learning that God was, in fact, Chuck, to believe that he might have an explanation for all of this. Sam, who, after finally situating God in his worldview as a villain, was still able to believe in a better future.

Thinking about how Dean Winchester was an atheist before he got caught up in the biblical apocalypse because in his mind, the two possible realities were an absent God and a cruel one. Thinking about him learning God was real and he had a Plan for him. Thinking about how that robbed him of his faith that a God wouldn't be capable of such cruelty. Thinking about how quickly he came to put his faith in Cas, despite his distrust of the divine. Thinking about The Man Who Would Be King. Thinking about Dean's only on-screen prayer to God being a plea to "bring him back."

forever thinking about the fact that at the start of 2.13 houses of the holy -- according to the display on his phone -- dean's listening to one of the parts of kashmir where robert plant is just moaning and wailing before launching into a whole rambly bit about being "on my way" and wanting to "take you there"

and while he's listening to the aforementioned moaning & wailing & rambling, he's "enjoying" the vibrating bed and making this face:

like it's no wonder sam was kinda grossed out when he got back to the motel and accused dean of enjoying the magic fingers too much.

anyway, it's genuinely a crime that they couldn't afford led zeppelin for the spn soundtrack because it would've made this moment even better than it already is. and it's already pretty damn great.
