This also reminds me of a passage from Marcel Pagnol's autobiography, My Father's Glory. The summary on Wikipedia is pretty good, so you only need to know the details of the specific scene.

We're in the early 1900's, in Southwest France. Marcel is eight years old. For the first time of his life, his father is going to go hunting with his brother-in-law, a proficient hunter. The whole family has been very engaged in the preparation of the moment.

I couldn't find an English version of the book so you get my own translation from French. Original under the cut.

At last at was the eve of the big day. First they tried on their hunters garb. Dad had bought a blue cap, that I thought was the best looking, brown leather greaves, and high top shoes with soles of rope. Uncle Jules was wearing a Basque beret, boots that laced on the front, and a very special jacket that I must talk about, because it was a remarkable piece of clothing. When she first saw it, my mother declared: - That's not a jacket: that's thirty pockets sewn together!" There were pockets even in the back. I would realize later that this profusion could be a flaw. When the uncle was looking for something in his pockets, he would first feel the fabric, then the lining, then both at the same time, to spot the item. The most difficult part was then to find how to access it. This is how a little blackbird, forgotten in this maze, signaled its presence a fortnight later by an awful smell. He was easily localized by the nose of Aunt Rose, and by the sight of a sad yellow beak that had pierced through the lining. The uncle probed several pockets, which helped him find an old rabbit ear, some snail puree, and an old toothpick that got stuck under the nail of his index finger… but to extract the corpse, scissors had to be employed. However, on its first apparition, the jacket made a big impression, and seemed to promise plenty of game.
