What's up with the leaves? And also, rocks?
That awkward moment where a visitor in your home who hasn't been there before asks, "What's up with the leaves over your doors?" And, damn, you really thought you took all those down, but evidently not.
And now you don't have a great way of explaining that you're a terribly haphazard occultist/witchy person who's more like a depository of lore that you cannot quite remember, but at some point, your step mother told you bay leaves over doorways keep out bad vibes and juju. And then you TRY to explain that, and that for some reason, a lot of people who are far, far better at being in tune with all things take one look at you and hiss through their teeth and start offering protection spells/tokens/talismans/options like they're saving somebody from quicksand.
This leads you into the inevitable chat about crystals, which you do like but can't remember what any of them do, much less how to decently take care of them, but yeah, sure you have green onyx and selenium and chunks of black tourmaline and rose quartz just every fucking where, but you can't quite remember what that's all about, either, now, as it was another Whim of the Moment or something somebody told you to do for protection, as usual. Or, more likely, gave you with urgent force which was nice but sort of overwhelming.
And then you start to wonder, "Protection from WHAT? Like, what's after me that everybody and their uncle feels the need to throw rocks at it?" And you STILL have no idea, but you get through the conversation and stop hiding under your desk from social anxiety after an hour or so.
...sigh.

Team Avatar
Ceres was an Air Nomad born in 12 BG and the Guardian of her younger brother, Avatar Aang during the Hundred Year War, succeeding Guardian Sora and preceding Guardian Katrina. As the Guardian of her time, she was the second person capable of using all four bending arts: airbending, waterbending, earthbending, and firebending. She was also one of a select few Guardians and one of the first in many cycles to learn the ancient art of energybending as well as the first Guardian known to have actively used the technique.
Shortly before the beginning of the Hundred Year War, Ceres was frozen in an iceberg with Aang for a hundred years; she later emerged, still biologically sixteen years old, into a world engulfed by war. During her absence, the Fire Nation had waged war upon the other nations and managed to completely wipe out the pacifistic Air Nomads. It fell to Ceres and her brother, the Avatar and the Guardian, and the last two airbenders, to end the War by mastering the other three elements and defeating Fire Lord Ozai.
She remained a kind and good-hearted girl at heart throughout her year-long struggle, despite the overwhelming loss of her people, the heavy burdens she was forced to bear, and looking after her younger brother. After her victory over the Phoenix King, Ceres began a romantic relationship with Fire Lord Zuko. The couple eventually married and raised a family of three children: Izumi, the oldest, a nonbender who became Fire Lord later in life; Kuzon, a firebender; and the youngest, Gyatso, an airbender.
History:
Ceres was born to two Air Nomads in 12 BG. After selecting the Guardian relics from among thousands of toys, thereby inadvertently confirming her identity as the Guardian, she was taken away by the monks of the Western Air Temple, who kept her position a secret from her to the Southern Air Temple. As an Air Nomad, Ceres traveled extensively around the world. During her childhood, Ceres was housed, raised, and educated at the Southern Air Temple, under the guardianship of Monk Gyatso, who served as her father figure, counselor, and tutor.
As a child, Ceres was a member of the Air Scouts, where she learned essential skills such as how to tie reins to a bison's horns with the bison horn knot. After some time, she and several other young Air Nomad girls were taken to the Eastern Air Temple where they each chose a sky bison as their lifelong companion. On that day, Ceres named her bison Kaida, thus marking the start of their deep and lifelong friendship.
Ceres was always able to excel at any new bending moves she learned; at the age of six, she was a better airbender than children twice her age, and by the age of ten, Ceres had proven herself to be better than her own teachers. She earned airbending tattoos and the status of an airbending master by the age of ten for exhibiting prodigious talent with her native element, making her the youngest airbending master in Air Nomad history, next to Aang. Later on, she meets her newborn brother, Aang and with Gyatso, Ceres helps raised Aang, forming a strong bond.
As she raises Aang, she discovers that he selected the Avatar relics from among thousands of toys, thereby inadvertently confirming that Aang is the Avatar. Over the years, their bond became deeper as Ceres sees Aang as her son while Aang sees Ceres as his mother, since Ceres sings him songs, dancing with him, play with him and looking out for him to keep Aang safe so he doesn't hurt himself.
In her teen years, Ceres and Aang also visited the other air temples, as evidenced by his obvious familiarity with the Western Air Temple, as well as cities in the Earth Kingdom, such as Omashu, where Ceres and Aang developed a lasting friendship with the good-natured but eccentric Bumi. She and Aang even bonded closely with children in the Fire Nation, like Kuzon, with whom they went searching for a dragon in the mountains and saved a dragon egg from poachers.
Due to the signs of a possible war approaching, Aang was told about his status as the Avatar at age twelve, four years earlier than the traditional age of sixteen, which is similar for the Protector. Aang felt burdened by his status as the other children refused to play with him anymore and he came to spend more time practicing airbending with the monks. Monk Gyatso and Ceres were the only ones who showed understanding of Aang's burden, with Gyatso having been good friends with Avatar Roku and Guardian Sora, Ceres's and Aang's past lives, and tried to help ease Aang through the transition from childhood to adulthood by providing Aang with balance through fun during the upheaval in his life with Ceres, who stayed by Aang's side throughout his entire life, having Aang to never want to leave her and never want to see her getting hurt.
However, Aang and Ceres later discovered that they would be sent to the Eastern Air Temple in order to complete their airbending training far away from Monk Gyatso, whom the other monks thought was too soft on him. Afraid and confused, the two airbenders ran away with their flying bisons, Appa and Kaida, though they became caught in a storm shortly after, which caused them to crash into the water.
Aang and Ceres saved themselves, Appa and Kaida from drowning by semi-consciously entering the Avatar and Guardian States and freezing them both in a sphere of ice through a combination of airbending and waterbending. The Avatar and Guardian States kept them alive, albeit not fully conscious, in the iceberg for about a hundred years while the war raged on.
Trivia:
• Ceres means "Nourishment" in Latin.
• Unlike the color of their Avatar siblings' firebending, the color of the Guardian's yellow instead of orange. But that's only after they're revealed as the next Avatar and Guardian, that's how everyone can tell which sibling is the Avatar and the other is the Guardian, by the color of their firebending.
• Ceres is the first Guardian who can use bloodbending, but vows to never use it again.
• Ceres is the first Guardian who can use metalbending after convincing Toph to teach her.

ANCHORED IN TIEN SHA COVE, DANANG, R.V.N.
OUR LAST DAY IN VIETNAM HAS JUST COME TO AN END.
IN A SHORT TIME WE'LL HEAVE AROUND AND GET UNDERWAY
FOR A VACATION IN HONG KONG AND THEN SUBIC BAY
WE'RE SWINGING ON THE STERN HOOK ABOVE THE MUD AND THE MIRE
IN TWENTY FEET OF WATER, ON TWO HUNDRED FEET OF WIRE.
TWO-FIVE-FIVE, THREE-ONE-FOUR, AND TWO-EIGHT-NINE BEAR,
THE JETTY LIGHT, OBSERVATORY POINT AND DEEP WATER PIER.
AS I STAND ON THE BRIDGE, THE NIGHT AIR IS PLEASANT
BUT I CAN'T THINK OF A WAY TO LIST THE SHIPS PRESENT.
THE HARBOR IS LARGE, THE DARKNESS COMPLETE
SO I THINK I'LL JUST LEAVE IT AS VARIOUS UNITS--PACFLEET.
THE CREW IS ASLEEP WITH ALL HANDS ABOARD
THERE'S NO LIBERTY CALL WHEN YOU'RE FIGHTING A WAR.
CONDITION THREE WATCHES AND YOKE HAVE BEEN SET,
AND A PICKET BOAT CIRCLES TO COUNTER A THREAT.
AS THE OLD YEAR DEPARTS, AND THE NEW ONE COMES IN,
LET US HOPE THAT THE VC DON'T GO FOR A SWIM
FOR THE MIDWATCH ON NEW YEAR'S IS A ROUGH ENOUGH TIME
WITHOUT TRYING TO PUT A G.Q. INTO RHYME.

"Don't touch my sister," He snarls the words with this specific resonance that Dee knows all too well considering how very long she's lived with him. The gentle hand on her shoulder raises, the blood of her wound rests on Pop's hand.
"He's just trying to help us out, Dex," Dee said quietly, her little brother was still defiant on the matter. She gave this gentle smile, one she hoped would ease his tension like it usually does.
He's still seething, his sister got hurt, his beloved sister. The person he turned into the angriest kid alive for, the sister he took all of his parents expectations for, the sister he tried to protect and failed to do so. He was sure he could keep her safe, sure he could keep her just fine on the supply raid because she was so desperate to join him.
To prove she wasn't just the nuisance he always said she was.
"I'm aware of that," He spat back, "How do we know we can trust them? Trust they don't have a Ballyhoo that'll hide Antihoo monsters? They could hurt us, Dee."
"We won't hurt you," Pop said, "We're in Med Bay 03, Mick and his cohorts are out there and can't hurt us-"
"I remember, Mick, Bugs, Ger, and Scoob," Dex spat bitterly, "I'm curious as to what makes you so sure me and my sister aren't a part of Mick's team?"
"A hunch," was Pop's answer to the question, "We saw you and your sister about to be torn to shreds by an Antihoo monster and saved you, of course, we couldn't patch all of your wounds while you two were passed out.
Dee's fingers raise to the small wound on her brothers arm, partially dried blood spilling down his lab coat. He hissed and pulled away from her, "Bring me to your lab and I'll start devising better and more efficient healing methods than bandaids and polysporin."
-/-/-/-
"You need to stay where it's safe, Dee," Dex would consistently chide despite his sister's insistence on joining them on the battlefield. Her Ballyhoo was never combative, it was an assist at best. Closed Caption, it let her read the thoughts of everyone around if she needed.
Dee clenched her fists a bit tighter, pigtails comically drooping, "But, Dexter, I could help-"
"Don't be an idiot, Dee Dee!" The aggressiveness to his tone is unintentional, but it makes Dee back down unlike when they were kids. Before they were part of the forces on planet Toone, before things got really bad, "Your Ballyhoo can give us nothing on the battlefield, it can barely give us anything off the battlefield either. You need to stay here to stay safe, monitor the injured, watch the doors, make sure that no is trying to double cross us."
And Dee wants so fucking badly to defy him, to push back, but ever since day one her brother has been the intellectual of the two. She nods, submitting to what she knows to be the truth, proven time and time again by the insanity upon the crashed spaceship. She takes a seat on a spinning chair, "Alright, Dex, please be careful out there. You're our best medic in spite of your Ballyhoo, did you ever realize how destructive it is?"
"My Ballyhoo? Pah! It's naught but my machines, my gadgets, little bombs I place my power in, ticking time bombs to save us all or kill us all," Dex answered without putting any thought behind it, "Mick used his Ballyhoo for evil, he still is, and I'll use mine to fight the good fight." His hand come to rest upon a set of wrenches, flat head and perfectly fitting within his hand. He grabs a set of his small bombs, his little trinkets used to properly and safely activate his Ballyhoo, he'll need them if they come across A Commander.
Dee just nods solemnly, highly aware of the fact that her brother isn't a fan of his Ballyhoo being a weaker version of Mick's. It's detrimental to his sense of being, his sense of identity, that he can be on the good guys team despite the fact his Ballyhoo is just a terrible reminder of what they're facing. That's why he throws himself into medical fields and machinery for defenses, the only way to detach himself from using his power to be a help, "I'll go patch up Felix and Yogi," She snags some of his special edition gauze tape, medication infused within it for good measure.
"Thank you for understanding, Dee," Dex said quietly, raising a gloved hand to readjust his goggles, the other hand stuffing weaponry into his lab coat pockets, "I'll be back, and better yet with some of those chips you keep nagging me about recreating."
"Thanks bro," There's this hoping sweetness on her voice, an innocence despite the fact that everything is falling apart around them.

Eyes sting with tears as she watches her brother be wheeled off on life support after the bout with Foghorn Leghorn, the bout that put one of them permanently out of business and the other near fatally wounded. She managed to deface the asshole that hurt her little brother, that nearly killed her little brother, but there was still the problem of the fact she didn't move fast enough. This could be it.
"Like, he'll be fine," Shag tried to console, good hand resting on Dee's shoulder. He sat beside her on the floor of their getaway, their emergency escape whether they failed or succeeded. And they succeeded but at a cost that Dee absolutely hated, an expense that made her feel ill.
She takes staggering breaths, gloved hand raising to run through blonde hair matting with blood. It hurts. Every little thing hurts, talking, breathing, touching her hair, her face hurts so much with how badly Foghorn messed it up. She slumps a little bit further down, "It should've been me."
Shag doesn't answer to fill the radio silence.
"I'm the big sister, and yeah I saved him, but," She stares at the body of her little brother. He's barely breathing. His heart rate is weak. Her breath hitches as she draws a hand to her now bright pink eyes to stifle the tears, "I didn't really save him."
"We'll fix him up, Dee," It's a promise that Shag can't keep, but he makes it anyways.
Dee nods and leans against Shag, "Okay."

At the last chapter of live of Luang Phu Supa, Luang Phu Supa stayed at Samnak Song Khok Sung Kosatham to convey and teach the Dharma to monks, and people there.

……………………………………………….
Pra Sangkajai / Pra Sangkachai
In Thailand, Budai is sometimes confused with another similar monk widely respected in Thailand, Pra Sangkajai or Sangkachai. Pra Sangkajai, a Thai rendering of Maha Kaccana or Mahakaccayanathera, was a Buddhist Arhata (inSanskrit) or Arahant (in Pali) during the time of the Lord Buddha. Lord Buddha praised Pra Sangkadchai for his excellence in explaining sophisticated dharma(or dhamma) in an easily and correctly understandable manner. Pra Sangkajai (Maha Kaccana) also composed the Madhupinadika Sutra (Madhupindika Sutta MN 18).
One tale of the Thai folklore relates that he was so handsome that once even a man wanted him for a wife. To avoid a similar situation, Pra Sangkachai decided to transform himself into a fat monk. Another tale says he was so attractive that angels and men often compared him with the Buddha. He considered this inappropriate, so disguised himself in an unpleasantly fat body.
Although both Budai and Pra Sangkajai may be found in both Thai and Chinese temples, Pra Sangkajai is found more often in Thai temples, and Budai in Chinese temples. Two points to distinguish them from one another are:
1.Pra Sangkajai has a trace of hair on his head (looking similar to the Buddha’s) while Budai is clearly bald.
2.Pra Sangkajai wears the robes in Theravadin Buddhist fashion with the robes folded across one shoulder, leaving the other uncovered. Budai wears the robes in Chinese style, covering both arms but leaving the front part of the upper body uncovered.
……………………………………………….
Luang Phu Supa Gantasilo, an ex-abbot of Wat Si Supharam, living between BE 2439 to BE 2556 (CE 1896 to CE 2013), 116 years old, 98 years as Buddhist monk, the longest-lived monks in modern Thai history....
Wat Luang Phu Supa, วัดหลวงปู่สุภา, also called Wat Si Supharam, is located in the Chalong area of Muang Phuket, or Phuket Town, Phuket, Thailand. The temple is a relatively new temple on the island. This temple is famous mainly because of its founder Luang Phu Supa who is probably one of the most respected and longest-lived monks in modern Thai history (it is said that he was over 116 years old). He dedicated a large part of his life (almost a century to be exact) to being a Buddhist monk spreading the word of dharma and building almost 40 temples and monasteries around the country (three of them are in Phuket).
Who was Luang Phu Supa?
Born over a century ago, Luang Phu Supa spent the first 70 or 80 years of his monkhood as a pilgrim and travelled around not only in the country but to other Asian countries and as far as Europe. Everywhere he went in Thailand, he helped the locals with various projects along the way. His extraordinary works include building bridges in rural areas, establishing hospitals for sick monks and many more projects.
There are other reasons why many people, especially Thai visitors, come to this revered site. It's because they want to obtain an amulet or charm made by the abbot. The most sought-after items range from a spider talisman (or yantra/mandala) which are very popular among shop owners and business persons who believe that it will bring them many customers and businesses, to a crocodile charm that people believe gives them the power to guard them against robbery and violence.

Week 237: Sunday, April 14th, we wrapped up our spring break with a trip to My Old Kentucky Home, 501 E Stephen Foster Ave, Bardstown, Kentucky. What a lovely day! We spent the previous night across the street at Bardstown Motor Lodge, 418 E Stephen Foster Ave, and had dinner at The Old Talbott Tavern, 107 W Stephen Foster Ave, and brunch at Mammy's Kitchen & Bar, 116 W Stephen Foster Ave. On Friday, April 12th we ventured to Mammoth Cave National Park, 1 Mammoth Cave Pkwy, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, and went on a Domes and Dripstones Tour deep into the cave (though we did not explore all 426 known miles of the longest cave system in the world)! Afterwards we went to Kentucky Down Under, 3700 L and North Turnpike Road, I-65, Horse Cave, to see the Onyx Cave and feed some kangaroos! We stayed at Sleep Inn & Suites, 801 Mammoth Cave St, Cave City, and ate at Cave City Pizza, 210 Broadway St, and KFC. On Saturday, April 13th, we went on a tour of the Log Still Distillery, 225 Dee Head Rd, New Haven, on the Bourbon Trail Craft Tour, and got to taste some bourbon! We also had a chance to see the Lincoln Birthplace Memorial (with symbolic cabin), White City, and the Lincoln Boyhood National Monument (including Historical Farm), 3027 E S St, Lincoln City, Indiana. So much history!

Journal 6- Pariah FEA 395-02
The film we were assigned to watch this week was “Pariah” by Dee Rees. The reading that goes with the film is “The Oppositional Gaze: Black Female Spectatorship”, in Movies and Mass Culture by Bell Hooks. Pariah follows Alike in a queer coming of age story that centers on Alike and her journey as she comes to terms with her lesbian identity. Her family is deeply religious and alike struggles with the internal distance that her sexuality puts between her and her family. Alike’s mother wants her to be a feminine girly girl and provides her with that type of clothing despite it not being what alike likes. She typically dressed very masculine or butch which is sometimes used as a form of flagging, Alikes' struggle about “not being queer enough” is probably reflected in how she dressed almost like she is compensating for her lack of queer experience. Her life is split, she lives one life privately among her friends and another among her family, this very much ties in with what we’ve discussed previously about how queerness kind of lives in the “in between” spaces and there is a particular stigma surrounding black lesbians that we went over when discussing “Watermelon Woman”. These tie in with the reading by Bell Hooks when we consider that the “oppositional gaze” is ultimately made to make us stand up to oppression and refuse to avert your eyes away from content and media obviously not made for you “That all attempts to repress our/black peoples’ right to gaze had produced in us an overwhelming longing to look, a rebellious desire, an oppositional gaze” (Hook, Pg. 116). This is Hooks essentially saying that the act of looking is an act of defiance when you have been repressed and forced to avert your eyes. We see that same attitude in “Pariah” with how Alike ends up living her life in opposition to her mothers belief, choosing to leave and free herself from those expectations is of itself an act of defiance.

Week Eight Post
For week eight of our class, we watched the 2011 film Pariah directed by Dee Rees which follows the seventeen-year-old Alike, a Black teenager who understands her identity as a lesbian in a family who doesn’t accept who she is. She struggles through coming into herself in a world not only where people outside her life don’t accept her but also people close to her like her mother think that she will go to hell if she continues on down this path. The story deals with many harsh realities including the pressure of religion and disapproval from those in her life, and how this impacts how she sees herself and the decisions that she is making. This film holds great importance because of the story being told because of how we're able to show this queer story about how a queer person has to find themselves in the harsh world but double down by also putting it through the lens of a coming-of-age story through the body of a teenage girl. This allows us to also see the contrast with having to deal with the many changes in her life emotionally and literally.
We can then switch to looking at our reading for the week by author Bell Hooks titled “The Oppositional Gaze: Black Female Spectatorship” released in 1992, wherein she discusses the relationship that Black Women have had with cinema throughout the years, especially on how they viewed it when no one who looked like them could even be on the screen. She stated, “That all attempts to repress our/black peoples’ right to gaze had produced in us an overwhelming longing to look, a rebellious desire, an oppositional gaze,” (116) pressuring the point that there was a narrative that the only story that could be told is that of white people and any other way was not accepted. Black people especially women would change the narrative and visualize themselves in these leading roles taking back their power and using it to positively uplift themselves. While also actively working to dismiss white supremacy and work to change the spaces in that people like themselves are seen and represented.

Resisting Domination and Inviting Empathy Through Identification in Pariah (2011)
In the film, Pariah (2011), directed by Dee Rees, the main character, Alike, struggles with gender expression around her friends and family members as she tip-toes around embracing her sexuality. The relationship between Alike and her mother, Audrey, demonstrates the intersectionality of race and religion because of Audrey's state of denial as she constantly denies Alike the space to express herself and dominates her daughter's ability to openly identify against her mother's religious beliefs. A scene early on depicts Alike coming home late from the strip club where she's confronted by her mother, a black, heterosexual blue collar woman who is suspecting of Alike's whereabouts. When Audrey persists that her and Alike should engage in mother-daughter bonding through shopping, Alike quickly dismisses this proposal and Audrey verbally retaliates, commanding her daughter to wash her face and wrap her hair. In "The Oppositional Gaze: Black Female Spectators" (1992) by bell hooks, the author describes, "Even in the worse circumstances of domination, the ability to manipulate one's gaze in the face of structures of domination the would contain it, opens up the possibility of agency" (hooks, 116). Although, early on in the film, Audrey is in denial about her daughter's sexuality. She actively takes steps to dominate Alike's expression, although fails, behind the disguise of her influence as a mother by rejecting her daughter's choices in masculine clothing and queer friendships. Later in the film, Alike has her first sexual experience with Bina, the daughter of one of Audrey's friends, who Audrey ironically forces Alike to spend time with in an attempt to steer her away from her queerness. hooks recounts a conversation with her sister regarding non-Hollywood, independent films, "They were, she suggested, more like 'what we knew life to be, the deeper side of life as well'"(hooks, 127). The depiction of queer intimacy in the film is restrained though the lingering exchanges of female gazes and skin that is secondary as it is cloaked in darkness and through images in which the editor cuts away from early, only leaving an emotional impression of intimacy opposed to images of naked female bodies widely associated with traditional Hollywood films targeted for men.
