#10. SMOL BEAN

Been rewatching the early Marvel movies and apparently this is the time of my life where I just get re-obsessed with characters I love so here's some random thoughts about Loki/Thor the Dark World:

Why. In the world. In the universe. Did Odin not ask Loki ANY questions when Loki was brought before him for judgement in Dark World? Like, at the BAREST MINIMUM he should have asked where Loki got an ARMY, the last time he'd seen Loki was when Loki fell off the Bifrost and then he vanished for a year and showed back up with the glowstick of destiny and an army that Thor says "are not of Asgard or any world known". ODIN. WHY ARE YOU NOT ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS?!

Like, we are aware that Odin is. partial to giving his kids harsh punishments. He obviously doesn't care about Loki's motives. Like, a good parent would look at their kid who disappeared for a year and then came back insane and be like "hey so what happened to you when you disappeared? you didn't get captured by a super powerful being and tortured into submission did you?" (Thanos tortured Loki I have SOURCES and I WILL cite them upon request) But even a bad parent who was a decent king would wonder how their kid suddenly got an ARMY out of NOWHERE and yet Odin never questions this at all. Even Thor in Avengers at least asks Loki "Who showed you this power? Who controls the would-be king?" (which just shows Thor would honestly be a better king than Odin tbh) but Odin is just like "nah this is not important. imprisoning my son for life and telling him how worthless I think he is is more important in this moment."

I wonder if she'd had more time if maybe Frigga would have been able to get Loki to tell her what happened and if maybe that was part of her goal of visiting him (beyond just, you know, actually being a decent parent who cares about her child and wanting to keep him company) because we know she's clever (she's smarter than Odin good gravy, is there like an age difference between them is he going senile or something) so PERHAPS she thought if she talked to Loki she could puzzle out what had happened to him and find out if there was, you know, a potential universal threat Asgard should be aware of. And like, if she had found out anything what was Odin going to say? He can't actually punish his wife in any meaningful way (lol imagine he tries and she just grabs her two grown sons and leaves, help xD) especially if she found out IMPORTANT INFORMATION that he SHOULD have discovered on his own.

This does kind of highlight an underlying problem with Odin, where he seems to think that Asgard is invincible and is, well, lazy about defending it. Like, I've seen posts about how Loki letting the Frost Giants into Asgard in the first movie is actually him not just showing that Thor is not ready to be king, but also demonstrating that Asgard has dangerous holes in its defenses. Because yeah, Loki can HIDE HIMSELF FROM HEIMDALL and sneak into Asgard. Heck, he can sneak OTHERS into Asgard while he's not even WITH them. That- that is a security threat, because if anyone BESIDES Loki could do that then Asgard could easily be invaded and- wait a second, that happens in The Dark World! The Dark Elves hide themselves from Heimdall and sneak an invasion force into Asgard! Destroying it's defenses and KILLING ITS QUEEN. Like, my goodness, do you think Loki is the only person with these abilities? Are you even trying Odin? At all?

TLDR; Odin is an idiot for not questioning Loki about the Chitauri/where he was for a year between Thor and Avengers, not to mention an awful father and an incompetent king.

Crosshair: So we can either do something dumb that could very well get me injured or we can listen to Mayday and not do the thing, Fennec: Well there’s a clear right answer here. Crosshair: *proceeds to throw five packs of mentos into a barrel full of diet coke*

Omega: If I run and leap at Mayday, they will most certainly catch me in their arms. Omega, running towards Mayday: Coming in! Mayday: No! I’m holding coffee! Mayday: *Drops coffee and catches Omega*

Fennec: Ah, ready for another fantastic day of being better than Crosshair.

Tech: I didn’t even realize how sarcastic I was being. It’s starting to become a problem, I think.

Wrecker: What are your adjectives? Mayday: …You mean my pronouns? Wrecker: No, I know what your pronouns are! What are your adjectives? Mayday: …I dunno. What are yours? Wrecker: Noisy and chaotic! Mayday: I’ve never had something go from making no sense to making complete sense so quickly.

Omega, staring at Grogu in a cage: ...Why are they in a cage? Tech: Because they growled at me.

Grogu: *eating a cinnamon roll* Hunter: Cannibalism. Grogu: *confused chewing noises*

The girl in purple with the strange-looking weapon (a curved stick with string connecting both ends, and more smaller, sharp sticks to go with it) was tied to a chair. Captured. Purple Girl was still talking, pretending to be brave, but the weapon could see the worried, nervous, scared behind all the words. Could read the hurt in the way she held herself—she’d been injured, but was hiding how bad, not wanting her captors to know.

She needed help, and the weapon didn’t know if help was coming, or, if they were, if they’d make it there on time. Because the men with Purple Girl were angry, impatient, annoyed. Getting closer to hurting Purple Girl more, the more she talked. They had their own weapons, too; the small, loud ones that fit in hands and made holes in bodies. Purple Girl didn’t have any way to defend herself.

It wasn’t difficult to dispatch of the men. There were only eight, after all—the weapon had been trained to fight many more than that, at once—and she was able to pick most of them off one by one, while sneaking through the shadows, before the remaining four realized something was wrong. The fight with them was barely a fight at all. It certainly wasn’t anything difficult; the men didn’t get the chance to use their loud weapons, and she wasn’t even out of breath by the time they were all on the ground, unmoving (she’d checked and they were all still breathing, still alive, just sleeping-but-not).

She looked around again to make sure none of them would be getting up any time soon, then silently made her way over to Purple Girl. Frowned at the thin, silver bindings the men had used to restrain her. That was the sticky kind, the stuff that was difficult to rip, when so many layers had been used. Easier to cut. She patted Purple Girl’s hands gently, tried to copy the smiles she’d seen people make that usually made the receiver feel better. The kind that said safe now. Then she turned back to the men and started searching their pockets for something sharp.

sorry to bother you and please delete this if it's too obnoxious but can you explain what was going on in that last post with the "smol bean hitler" thing I have cognitive issues and definitely want to block at least one of the people involved but I don't really understand what's being said?

Okay I don't blame you for not understanding it because there's a lot of context there. I will do my best to give a rundown of the situation and explain everything to the best of my ability, but my account of the events might be incompelte because I really didn't witness everything.

A little over a week ago, tumblr user siwolism made a post about how she watches a lot of videos about korean fried chicken, and she had noticed a trend in the comments of these videos: a lot of those videos had comments from americans (mainly black americans) bragging about how the only reason why koreans have fried chicken is because african-american soldiers took the recipe to korea during the korean war. She said that as a korean she found these comments uncomfortable because for korean people the korean war was an extremely bloody conflict and korea hasn't still fully recovering from its effects, and americans displaying such pride about any of the things they did during the korean war is an appalling display of american chauvinism. And that the fact that black americans were displaying the same chauvinistic mindset that she would have expected from whtie americans showed that being black or any racial minority in america doesn't exempt anyone from the privileges of american imperialism or the chauvinism of defending it.

At some point I got involved by making a comment on the post, about how I found it silly that people were insulting op and tagging the post as "#tw antiblackness" when all she did was complain that it's downright evil for americans, regardless of race, to joke about the time the USA invaded korea so violently that 1 out of every 10 koreans got killed.

(I still stand by that, considering that the post didn't complain about black ppl in america in general, only about the ones that she saw acting in a specific chauvinistic way, and despite how much people have accused her since of "singling out" black americans as the main beneficiaries or defenders of american imperialism, the post went out of its way to make it clear that this was just a manifestation of a wider problem that applies to all americans regardless of race)

I also made another addition to the post about how i think many of the people making those comments were probably motivated by the way so many african-american inventions in the US have their roots erased once they become popular with non-black people, but that in my opinion they were failing to understand that, despite how superficially similar they may look, "a black american telling a white american that they should be thankful because black people invented jazz and rock" is a fundamentally different situation from "a black american telling a korean that they should be thankful because black people brought fried chicken to them during the war", because the power dynamics between these two countries and the history of the korean war fundamentally changes the situation.

These additions in particular picked up a lot of steam, which somewhat accelerated the post in question breaking containment.

Siwolism was accused of being antiblack for using the term "amerikkka" in her post. Your mileage may vary on that one, but regardless of your opinion I don't think it invalidates any of the things she said in the post.

She was accused of erasing the racism and oppression that black people face in the USA. She repeatedly clarified that she (like any serious anti-imperialist) recognizes that racial minorities in the imperial core face racism and oppression, but that their oppression in that axis doesn't erase the fact that living in the imperial core puts them in a position of privilege over people in the imperial periphery.

She was also accused of erasing anti-black racism in korea (which is a complete non-sequitur tbh, unless you're interpreting her post as "all black people oppress all korean people" and not "black people in america have the capacity to act in imperialistic ways toward people in other countries"). She clarified that she thinks racial discrimination in south korea is a serious issue, that she faces a great deal of it as a north korean immigrant of hui chinese descent, but that she obviously doesn't have it as bad as the discrimination black people face in korea. However, she said the situation of a black person from korea and a black person from america is not the same with relation to imperialism, and when a black soldier is stationed in one of the numerous american military bases in korea they don't face the same struggles as a korean black person because they're acting as part of an imperialist occupying force.

As the post broke containment, she faced increasing levels of harassment. She started getting anons calling her anti-asian slurs, particularly someone who called her an "antiblack gook bitch", "gook" being a slur extensively used by american soldiers to refer to koreans during the korean war.

(that might have been the same person who left me an anon calling me a "fucking antiblack beaner" in response to my additions to silowism's post but who knows)

She also had multiple anons telling her that they hoped she and all her friends got killed by the next american soldier they encountered, which is especially vile considering that american soliders stationed in military bases in south korea have a history of killing and commiting sexual violence against korean women and facing no consequences for it, to the point that the US government coerced the South Korean government into signing a treaty that prevents any US soldiers caught comitting such acts from being tried in a South Korean court.

At some point she psoted the following meme

This is a meme that has been used numerous times on this website to make fun fo the way how a post gets misinterpreted in increasingly ridiculous ways as it gets further away from your mutual circle. I think it's clear that none of the categories on the right are targeted specifically at black people, but instead at the people running with the worst possible interpretation of anything she said in her post (a lot of whom weren't even black americans, I think it's important to acknowledge that a lot of them were white americans who were pissed of that imperialism were being called out and decided to amplify the accusations of racism because it was a progressive-sounding way to shut down discussions of american imperialism). Still, a lot of people ran with the worst faith interpreation of it and started talking about how she "literally said all black people are illiterate chimpanzees"

She also, at some point, after days of continued harrassment, told one of the people harassing her to hang themselves. Again, people ran with the worst possible interpreation of it to talk about how "she's literally sending lynching theats to black people"

Eventually the harassment was so much that she deleted her blog.

Almost two weeks later people keep playing telephone with increasingly outlandish misinterpretations of the things she said, resulting in the tags you saw screenshotted on the post you're referring to, where someone accused her of "implying black people invented imperialism"

so yeah like I'm not going to tell you who to block or even to block anyone at all, but that's my attempt at catching you up to speed on what's going on in that post.

the tim drake post is so real like why do people talk abt how he’s “painfully white” (absolutely not true, he radiates ‘trans guy of color with an average white dad’), but i see like. maybe two joke references to bruce being painfully white. i understand that bruce being painfully white is a given and doesn’t NEED to be said but i think it should be

It seems to come down to two reasons:

Tim antis who wanna feel morally superior for hating him

Tim stans who want to be #quirky by joking about weird shit but just come out looking like racist weirdos

TGCF Season 2 Episode 2 SCREECHING

One tiny complaint first: Crunchyroll for the love of anime could you proofread your captions even once?

Now, onto the screaming:

The whole table bit. Hua Cheng repelling it with little finger movements (that finger swirl, good heavens 😳) while Qianqiu is expending so much energy. Also the ghosts immediately replacing it with another giant table they just had on hand is hilarious.

Lang Quinqiu getting pelted with things and dropping from the ceiling off screen is also hilarious.

I just love the design and humour of all the ghosts.

THEY SPENT SO MUCH TIME ON THE DICE. IT'S SO SOFT AND ROMANTIC. So much happened in the last episode, but then they took their sweet sweet time with this, and that is correct and accurate and as it should be. The music. The red veil. The soft smiles and the hand touches. The ghosts whispering. The fact that Crunchyroll actually translated "gege" as "dear brother" once so you get a better feel of the respect and care HC is very very publicly showing Xie Lian.

Shi Qingxuan continues to be amazing in every way.

Xie Lian's obvious affection for Lang Quinqiu is so bittersweet.

Lang Quinqiu being all "Hey. No. Your friend is a bad guy but that doesn't mean you should trick him." Adorable smol bean. I've never really cared much about him one way or the other before, but the donghua version is getting me really attached.

THE BUN. THEY KEPT THE BUN. THEY!!! THEY...Xie Lian seeing Hua Cheng biting into it and just absolutely BOOKING IT and running into things is SO PERFECT. This is the exact energy he radiates after the first kiss, or after the CPR attempt, and I can't remember if he ran off like that at this point in the book but if he did I'd forgotten and if he didn't it's a PERFECT addition. 20/10
