i think they were trying to show pete as a greedy, swindling jerk but they never commit to it. this just makes the viewer confused what everybody is mad at him about
#1. he's a bad gambler. if he were cheating he'd be winning#2. he *does* suggest that whoever has saadia has the goldmine#he never really does anything with that?#3. he sets up gambling at the circus. however he tells the guy not to cheat anyone and makes him get rid of the fake shells#this move does seem to be to make himself more money but also the circus#he never actually steals anything from anyone#4. his relationship with jerry is so sweet? like?? he's a nice guy#maybe a little bit over flirty and confident but a nice guy#5. the scene where jerry says pete *isn't nice anymore* is so poorly done and even my brother#(who is normally anti any character played by dean in m&l movies by default)#was confused entirely#like yeah he does suggest they skip out on the orphan benefit#but not because he's greedy or hates children#but because he's worried that they'll be off schedule and the circus will suffer (and the circus is already in dire straits)#he says some things that suggest maybe he's trying to be shady but he never actually does anything shady#and pretty quickly i think he does have the circus' best interests in mind#it's just one big weird mishandled mess#anyway.#typewriter dings
