When the light was almost gone, only a couple beams of moonlight filtering through the dust. He leaned against the door. He cried a little. He was stuck.

But he lifted his head when he heard singing. Someone was singing. Multiple someones. He pressed his ear against the crack in the door. He heard a group singing a song.

What caught Jojo's heart were the love songs. La Llorna, Red is the Rose, sad songs. About love and loss. He wanted to join, but resigned himself to listen.

He fell asleep leaned against the door, despite the cold and his hunger. The exhaustion of the past few days got to him. 

He slept fitfully all night. He was wakened by the door opening and his back slamming into the dirt of the ground. His head bounced off the ground. 

The man leaned over him. "Hey mustang." He teased. "Sleep well?" 

Jojo sat up, rubbing the back of his head. "Fuck you." He spits. "Let me go." He stood up, dusting off his shirt and jeans. He looked up at the man again.

Jojo sighed. He was in a ring with mustangs. Two wild horses. He'd done this before. He sighed and stayed back from the horses. Two beautiful horses, a blue roan and a chestnut. Two mares. 

He gave them space. He looked at the people gathered around. "Anybody got an apple?" He asked dryly. 

Buttons chucked a Granny Smith at his head, which Jojo caught. He approached the roan, holding the apple flat in his hand. The roan approached curiously. She nibbled the apple before taking it and eating it. 

He smiled and gently patted her neck. "Hey good girl. You're so good, you know? You're so beautiful, eh? A beautiful girl." He pet down her neck and her back. The roan watched him and skittered away. 

Jojo didn't mind. "It's okay. You can get away." He said softly. A carrot was rolled to him, and Jojo took it and snapped it in half. He offered half to the roan again. "How about a carrot, eh girl?" He asked. The roan looked curious and approached. 

Someone shouted. "DAMN WE GOT A HORSE WHISPERER!!"

The roan spooked and charged. Jojo made a mad break for the rail and scrambled up and over. He landed on his feet, glaring at all of them to see who had yelled. The short brown haired boy looked embarrassed. “Sorry…”

Buttons whacked his arm. “Nice going jackass.” She hissed. The boy with the crutch whacked his shin as well. 

The boy looked indignant. “Hey, just ‘cause my name is Jack doesn’t mean you can call me a donkey! I’m at least a pony!” He said, trying to prim himself up.

“Yeah, and yet everybody calls me Crutchie.” ‘Crutchie’ pointed out. “We can call you Jackass. Now you have to go in there. That’s the rule.”

Jack looked at the man -who’s name Jojo still did not know, and it was pissing him off. “Mike, save me. Please.” 

Jojo stared at Mike. Mike Guzman. The fucking bandit. He stared at him. He just couldn't believe it. It made sense, but he kinda expected… Someone taller. And less hot. And his dumb brain said stuff. "I thought you'd be taller." 

Mike looked over and laughed. "You what?!" He howled with laughter, as did the others. It took a while for them all to calm down. "You think I'm short, alter boy?" He clapped Jojo's shoulder. "You're hilarious, you really are."

Jojo stared. They… They were laughing? What? He wasn't dead?

Jack slung his arm around his shoulder. "C'mon mustang, let's get you get you a hot meal. Tame you, eh?" His cheeky smile almost made Jojo okay with him using that nickname. 

He was dragged to a tent and sat down at the bench and table. He was slid a bowl of hot something, and a spoon. Quickly, the rest of the people settled down to eat as well. Jojo looked around in surprise. How had this happened? Why were they accepting him?

Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv is please to present “Stumbling Through the Uncanny Valley: Sculpture and Self in the Age of Computer Generated Imagery”, a group exhibition spanning the entire building. We spend so much time looking at screens that show us images created by computers rather than cameras or humans. This new aesthetic filters through our daily lives and gives form to a new mode of visual representation. Following these premises, the exhibition examines the boundaries of this phenomenon through the work of 30 pioneering artists from around the globe. The exhibition title refers to the term “The uncanny valley,” that was coined in the 1970s to describe the unsettling feeling when androids (humanoid robots) or audio / visual representations of people closely resemble humans, but are not fully realistic or convincing. This dissonance is found today in computer-generated imagery (CGI) that now form our visual world and artists today are responding to and deconstructing the resultant visual landscape.

The exhibition is conceived as a major spotlight on this medium shift, drawing inspiration from the stream of “Post-Internet Art.” “Post-Internet” does not mean a world after the Internet, but rather work being made in a widely networked world and focusing on the visual culture that is its byproduct, a culture that has become more and more globalized and connected, bringing together artists from different regions of the world, from Asia to Central Europe, from the Middle East to Baltic Countries. These artists are not only producing art with new tools, they are looking deeply at a new world order in which synthetic images make up a large part of what we take in. In this world, mediated by technology, the physical and the virtual merge, and the Internet complicates how the self and the other meet.

“Stumbling Through the Uncanny Valley: Sculpture and Self in the Age of Computer Generated Imagery” is curated by Chen Tamir and is accompanied by a booklet in English, Hebrew and Arabic, and a public program including roundtables, performances, and curator’s tours in English and Hebrew.

New York Man Plotted to Kill Police in Times Square, Prosecutors Say

A New York man praised Osama Bin Laden and talked about killing police officers as he plotted an attack on Times Square, one of midtown Manhattan’s most crowded crossroads, prosecutors said on Friday.

Ashiqul Alam, 22, from Jackson Heights in the city’s Queens borough, was charged with illegally acquiring firearms as part of a plan, federal officials said.

Alam was arrested on Thursday after receiving two Glock 19 nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistols with their serial numbers stripped off from undercover law enforcement officers, according to a complaint unsealed on Friday in Brooklyn federal court.

During meetings with an undercover federal agent, Alam expressed support for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York as well as the militant group Islamic State, according to the complaint. He also discussed using an explosive suicide vest in an attack.

“As alleged, Ashiqul Alam bought illegal weapons as part of his plan to kill law enforcement officers and civilians in a terrorist attack on Times Square,” U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue, whose office brought the charges, said in a statement.

Alam is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn later on Friday.

Alam’s lawyer, James Darrow, said he had no immediate comment.

Times Square, with its millions of visitors each year, is often called the crossroads of the world, and has been targeted by at least two bombers in recent years, despite the presence of heavily armed police.

On May 1, 2010, police thwarted an attempted car bomb in Times Square, defusing a crude device made out of firecrackers and propane gas tanks.

A Pakistani-born U.S. citizen pleaded guilty to the plot, admitting that he had received bomb-making training from the Pakistani Taliban and that the group, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan had funded the plot. He was sentenced to life in prison.

In December 2017, a Bangladeshi man set off a homemade pipe bomb strapped to his body in a crowded underground pedestrian tunnel near Times Square. The man, Akayed Ullah, was convicted of six criminal counts, including use of a weapon of mass destruction and support of a terrorist organization.

Kate Fan, a 28-year-old charity worker visiting from Guangzhou, China, said she had heard about the incident but still felt safe.

“We hear a lot of stories about New York being unsafe, but we feel like people sometimes exaggerate safety issues,” she said.

U.S. physicians urge FDA to bolster labeling on high-sugar foods

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The American Medical Association (AMA) is urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ramp up labeling of high-sugar foods, it said in a statement on Tuesday.

The association, which represents U.S. physicians, is calling on the FDA to develop front-of-package warning labels for foods high in added sugars. It is also pushing for the FDA to limit the amount of sugar that can be added to products that claim to have health or nutritional benefits.

“When consumers have access to the amount of sugar they are consuming they may choose foods with less sugar,” Albert J. Osbahr, III, M.D., member of the AMA Board of Trustees, said. This can in turn “help prevent debilitating chronic medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease which affect millions of Americans.”

Food manufacturers are working to implement more prominent nutrition fact labeling by 2020, which will include the amount of added sugars.

Such labeling is already giving consumers access to information on sugar content, Sugar Association CEO Courtney Gaine said.

“Taking things a step further to include a warning label does nothing but mislead consumers because it is an idea not grounded in science and does not support FDA’s rationale for setting the daily value in the first place,” Gaine said.
