#...apparently I decided to tag it as a novel and now I'm stuck

Hello, I love Hildred Castaigne! He’s such a fucked up unreliable narrator and he also reminds me so much of myself in middle school and I love him for it. What do you like about him?
First off, apologies for taking absolutely ages to answer this! Life happened and I promptly forgot tumblr existed for almost a month. Yay.
Anyhow, I think my love of Hildred is a combination of the factors you mentioned and the absolute state I got into shortly after I found The King in Yellow -- aaand here comes an essay. The last version of this got deleted, and apparently I've taken it upon myself to make its replacement even lengthier.
Hildred is a fascinating character to read and to write, and his opinions on things are (or would be) so different from mine that it's fun to try to puzzle them out. I keep a bevy of fictional characters that I can simulate reasonably well as a way to make myself consider how people get to opinions that differ from mine, and naturally he's among them.
Beyond that, I'm an absolute sucker for hints at a greater world, but only narrow viewpoints from which to try to figure out what's going on in that world.
The weird bits of The King in Yellow as a whole are superb at tantalizing you with smug allusions and tiny scraps of information about what, exactly, it is that the book is named for.
Is it a play? Is it an entity? What happened to the author? ...was the author Boris? (I don't think the author was Boris, but I won't lie that I've considered writing a fic where he was.)
I got hooked on Lovecraft for the same reason, and it's actually what put me on to Arthur Machen (favorite author) and The King in Yellow (favorite book).
Even with all that, I think my King in Yellow interest would have been a passing thing that returned occasionally, if it hadn't been the last thing I got into before my first set of high school final exams kicked my ass.
The tl;dr of freshman year is that I picked the wrong math class and it spent the semester wrecking my self-confidence (and my sleep schedule) before I finally managed to transfer to a better one. (Then I spent second semester picking myself back up.)
Hildred, notably, is self-confident to the point of it backfiring catastrophically on him. He absolutely should not have gloated to Louis, tactically speaking; in this essay I will-
Anyway. Stress is weird, so during finals season and its leadup I had quite a lot of unmarshalled energy that refused to work on what I actually needed it to do and that instead directed itself at my idle pokings at Hildred and his world.
Probably better than worrying about how my abysmal math grade was going to ruin my life.
It didn't, and I came out of the crucible with rather extensive additional worldbuilding. Since I essentially speedran getting invested in the project, I came away wanting to do more of it and... it just kind of stuck?
I mean, here we are several years later and my first impulse is still to name my tumblr blog for him. I've got a rough idea of his extended family back three generations. I have a design for that spring suit Hawberk had that was mentioned exactly once. I am the embodiment of
Tumblr media
when it comes to this lol
_____
I couldn't find a good place to fit this in above, but Hildred was also the first time I encountered a story with an obviously intentional unreliable narrator after I'd encountered the term. Not sure how I missed it that long, lol. I spent probably half a decade looking askance at various authors and going "...do you know what you're writing there???"
I also couldn't integrate it anywhere, but I absolutely adore "The Mask." I have Thoughts on Chambers's ability to write romance more generally, the short version being that he writes Lovers™ and not characters and they're thus so wooden they're hard to read, but that he must have been in a position like the beginning of "The Mask" because holy god that is exactly how it feels.

So me and my bestest friend @notanegrill began playing a game about making stories. It's called Storybook, and as the title suggests we're coming together to create the most legendary story of them all.
youtube
Tumblr media
V: *Opens first page*
Me, normal voice: "At the end of this book lies a crown-"
V: "NO! STORYTELLER VOICE!"
Me, using that one voice from the Theatre scene in 'We Were Here': "It is bestowed only to the finest storytellers of the realm."
V: "Hehe, way better."
Spoilers Ahead:
Tumblr media
So we start the world as any world begins, with a tale as old as time - Adam and Eve. Which is... Me! Me and V because I will pick his ribs clean if he doesn't 100% the achievements (he enjoys it, ok)
And we were both excited for 0.7 seconds before V hits me with the important questions of:
V: "Who is Adam, Eve?"
Me: "It's you, silly goose!"
V: "Oh, okay." c:
And like with every story that has Eve in it:
Tumblr media
:)
It's adorable to see Bernard getting some love though!
This game just flies by so fast when it's the two of us thinking, taking turns on what gets to be where so we push the other forward where our own ideas fail us. Playing games like this with a buddy truly beats playing it alone.
It's tagged LGBTQ+ because you can put two guys or two girls in love in some of the frames and it's adorable. They interact well.
Tumblr media
Me: "Oh look! It's the tiers of regret whenever I decide to open up."
Tumblr media
Can't believe this whole story is about how Edgar dies and forgets he's dead while being dead so he ends up shocked that he's dead when he sees himself in the mirror.
It's such a good plot for a fanfic not gonna lie... It's Genshin related and not meant to be here, but /I/ am the one who is writing this 'review' and I am the rat that makes all of the rules.
Tumblr media
V: "These... Two pixels, why are they so hot...?"
Me: ".... Yeah."
V: "I know you want her dress."
Me: "Oh I want to BE her."
Tumblr media
Us two: *GASP*
V: "Are you ready?"
Me: "VAMPIRE TIME."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
V: *Accidentally does this because he randomly drops characters on the map after figuring out what to do.*
V: "My brain (is so big)... I'm singing up in Harvard."
V: *Struggles with the simpler map later*
Me: "I think we have to sign you off Harvard now."
AND THE ENDING IS SOOO CUTE IT'S SO SUBTLE I BARELY NOTICED BUT IT MADE US SO HAPPY TO GET TO THE ENDING.
Like giving two kids a paper crown and calling them 'champ'.
Tumblr media
Someone in STEAM was asking how to solve the Maid and the Knight story and someone commented under it with 'God bless you'. Seriously, we managed on our own and it's all because it was 50/51 and we HAD to finish it to get to the ending.
During our reviews:
Me: "I think the graphics are beautiful. For a game that has a simple idea of making stories via characters and places being put together, everything is very well animated, interactive and apparently, given the achievements, it also has MULTIPLE options to work with."
V: "I agree. Also, there is an update in September."
Me: "Overall, it's a game I'd get if it's on sale. It's 20$ and in comparison to a visual novel with 40K words, a couple scenes, art etc. If that was 20$... I'd still think twice, but the point is - for what it is and it's original, a game I have never seen before, I think it's pretty good. It also doesn't have any background music, it could probably set the mood for some chapters. But the sound was totally good. No sounds overlap no matter how quickly you click around so it doesn't create a caccophony."
V: "Yeah, the music, or the lack of thereof is still fixable."
Me: "Well, there's the update. Might as well wait and see."
V: "Overall ranting?"
Me: "Hmmm..."
V: "On the count of three?"
Me: "Ok."
V: "Ugh I'm stuck between two... Ok, one... Two... Three!"
Me and him at the same time: "Seven."
V: "Why am I not surprised."
And that's it! It was truly a wonderful experience. Big thank you to developpers and the entire team that came up with the game. Can't wait to see what the updates may be and thank you, V, for sponsoring our gameplay.
Hope we get to play much more in the future.

favourite food: döner kebab, specifically the way it's prepared in Bulgaria, or sushi
song stuck in your head: Anoana by Heilung
last thing you googled: orphan tower france alchemy (I was struggling to solve a Nostradamus enigma in ac unity so I just started googling words from the riddle. The solution ended up being on top of the unnamed landmark tower I was sitting next to the entire time)
dream trip: I have many places I want to visit but none I would call the ultimate dream trip except for wherever my beloved hanar is 🥺
time: 2:33 pm
last book you read: tbh I don't read much anymore but I'm currently finishing The Chiprovtsi Goldsmith School (the middle of 16th- the beginning of 18th century) by Ivan Sotirov and before that I finished reading Crackin' Castles by Terry Deary.
last book you enjoyed reading: All Systems Red by Martha Wells
last book you hated reading: any best selling ya novels they decide to shit out these days. OK that's mean and I know I'm not the target audience for them but I keep falling into the tumblr trap of "yeah this book is good we promise, it's representation 🤌🏻!" And then it's the most agonisingly average book I've ever read
Also Gideon the Ninth, I don't see what everyone else sees.
Bonus:
favourite thing to cook/bake: left on my own I'll just make fried rice with whatever I have in the fridge and other easy recipes, but when I cook for people I love making lasagna with sausage ragu and pan-seared rosemary garlic butter steaks
I do prefer baking to cooking and I've got a decent repertoire but the ones I enjoy making the most are banitsa, katmer and Guinness chocolate cake
favourite craft to do in your spare time: … drawing
I don't have much going on outside of that and jewellery tbh. I do want to start learning embroidery!
most niche dislike: kiwi
opinion on circus(es) now and in history: my family used to take us to a travelling circus every once in a while when it was in the city but I was pretty neutral on it.
do you have a sense of direction and if not what is the worst way you ever got lost: I have a pretty bad sense of direction but good visual memory so if I walk a certain route once I'll remember it. That being said, I don't think I've ever been truly lost outside of the five times my parents lost me in the crowd as a kid (apparently I got distracted a lot so I would just walk away in a random direction the moment they weren't looking)
No pressure tag: @yellingaboutmasseffect @commander-krios @time-traveling-machine @caboosewaffles @callista-curations @asocialpessimist @ferusaurelius @buskies @elvhenn @katarrinskey
