Hi, I just finished the AA trilogy with my bf and we fell in love with it! I found your blog the other day, and it sometimes feels like you're the only one giving correct takes on these characters' writing and the minutiae of everyone's inner worlds (or the fumbling of, see Godot).
I just got here, but, something that's been bothering me about the fandom's approach to the sequel trilogy is like... the imperialist undertones are glossed over, or swept under the rug. Researching "The Dark Age of the Law" and beyond puts a sour taste in my mouth. And with Khura'in the country vs Kurain the village? It all feels racist at best (the concept of the Divination Seance gives me squick). If you have the time, I'd love to hear your thoughts about AA5 and AA6 in relation to the world of AA as a whole. Thanks again for all of your thoughtful and nuanced takes on this series!
so glad to hear you guys liked the games!! thank you for enjoying my posts, i always appreciate it.
the tl;dr of it is that i do think they are genuinely bad enough additions to the franchise that they have signed mainline ace attorney's death warrant. picking out the dark age of the law stuff and aa5 and the imperialism in aa6 you've pretty much honed right in on my two biggest critiques
however i do want to say that although they're being bundled and sold as a 'second trilogy' that's not quite accurate either experientially when playing the games or from a development perspective. aa4 had scenario design/creative direction by series creator shu takumi, with the art director being kazuya nuri (responsible for character design for rise from the ashes in the series previous to this); aa5+6 was spearheaded by takeshi yamazaki, who had been with the franchise since its first game, with the slightly less tenured takuro fuse on art direction/character design. yamazaki and fuse are not without skill, but i think they're both significantly less skilled than takumi and nuri respectively and. it really shows.
pair that with the fact that aa5 and 6 fundamentally do not follow up on any of ace attorney 4's established characters or plots more than superficially, i don't think it's particularly useful to critique 4-5-6 as if they're a single body of work in the same way the trilogy is. apollo justice isn't a perfect* ace attorney game but it's a good one.
anyway i think buying into the 'dark age of the law' stuff in ace attorney 5 necessitates cheapening all of the events preceding it. the implication that 1. the law wasn't that bad before but it Is Now and 2. a single case was the tipping point for whether or not the entire legal system would be bad just ruins the times when ace attorney has managed to acknowledge corrupt systems as a massive source of problem for the everyman in the past
i think this screenshot from the dark age of the law wiki page says a lot:
For starters, that phoenix quote. He would not fucking say that. I don't think there has ever been a point during or leading up to phoenix's career where he thought the legal system had 'glory' he would then want to restore it to. you seem to get it so im not gonna harp on this too much on this but. jesus christ
then, then there's fact that even by stating the most basic details about the franchise's events undermines the whole premise. like okay notice that the corruption that happens during the trilogy/investigations spinoffs is coming from all of the actual agencies that represent law and order/the system: the prosecutors, the police, and the prosecutorial investigation committee. however in aa5 the thing they choose to paint as responsible for supposedly unprecedented levels of corruption in the legal system is defense attorneys resorting to more drastic means, and the general public; aka not the people who are responsible for upholding the legal system but the people who are victimized by it and in opposition to it.
i don't think this was an intentional choice as much as it's just sloppy, inconsiderate, and contrived writing.
aa6 is just flat out racist. 'imperalist undertones' is i would say the gentlest way you could phrase it. like. japanese characters going to a made up south asian country that needs to be taught how to govern itself to quash its internal rebellion is like. so high on the yikes meter.
making a bunch of fake 'ethnic sounding' nonsense names filled with apostrophes to make them into silly sounding english phrasing was a disastrously tone deaf thing for the localization to do. they're really unforgivable. the worst of it all is probably "Inga Karkhuul Haw'kohd Dis'nahm Bi'ahni Lawga Ormo Pohmpus Da'nit Ar'edi Iz Khura'in III" i'm unsure if the names are quite as offensive in the original japanese because i haven't looked too much into what they actually are and have a really limited knowledge of the language. but. this name in japanese is "インガ・カルクール・ククルーラ・ラルバン・ギジール・ホフダラン・マダラ・ヴィラ・ヤシマ・ジャクティエール・クライン3世" which is written in katakana. katakana is, in contrast to kanji and hiragana which are used for writing japanese, used to phoenetically transcribe foreign languages or to write loan words. so the foreign-ness of this character is being emphasized here in the original text as well.
the supposed cultural inferiority of the khurainese people is baked into the game at pretty much every level, down to the gags. khura'in has the 'plumed punisher' show, which is actively criticized by the characters in game for just being a cheap ripoff of the steel samurai. they don't even get to have their own tv.
i believe the reason the racism is pretty much glossed over a lot in the fandom is for several reasons. for starters, ace attorney fans overall tend to fall into three camps: 1. people like me who fucking hate these games, refuse to acknowledge them, and would retcon them out of existence if possible. 2. people who have found things they like about the game and have a Good Version of the characters and plots that they have constructed in their head and 3. people who view all of the hate on these games as completely overblown
the first camp Does talk about how the game is racist but we're all already in agreement about that so it's kind of preaching to the choir and a bit redundant to keep going on about. the second camp tends to acknowledge the stickier aspects of the game but focuses on making content around the elements they like rather than critique. the third camp is the type to throw the baby out with the bathwater re: critiquing a thing they like. it's all haterism to them. but either way i think its kind of fucked up how many people will be like 'aa6 isnt that bad you guys are just mean' without even acknowledging these complaints.
anyway the khura'in country vs kurain village thing is really weird to me it shows both a lack of imagination and a disregard for the series' own established lore. why would a girl from a village where almost everyone is a spirit medium need to go to a place where only, like, two people are mediums to train.
i will say though that the divination seance is kind of one of the only things i found about aa6 to be an interesting addition. for a franchise with ghost summoning and murder solving, the two have a kind of hilariously low amount of overlap so i found the idea of bringing ghost bullshit into court really fun. mechanically speaking, the divination seances also felt a LOT better to play than the mood matrix segments of aa5.
in general, i think the biggest weakness of the mainline franchise under takeshi yamazaki's stewardship is its misunderstanding of stakes. both aa5 and 6 prioritize more bombastic and impressive on paper material stakes. oh no! the ENTIRE JUSTICE SYSTEM BEING GOOD OR BAD depends on this one case! on no! we have to DEAL WITH REBEL INSURGENTS! complete horseshit when there is not competent and functional enough character writing to get us emotionally invested here. yamazaki seems to think bigger is better, and that just simply isnt true for something like ace attorney
i've pointed this out in the past when critiquing aa5 and 6 but if you look at the actual material stakes on the line in ace attorney, they're at their highest after rise from the ashes. ousting the corrupt chief of police is the most impressive and impactful thing phoenix does with his career (arguably until the jurist system, but definitely in the trilogy.) but that's not the big Finale case for his character arc. his finale case is defending his college girlfriend; a nun who lives in the mountains, whose conviction would have had zero implications on the larger fabric of ace attorney's legal system. because takumi's writing clearly shows that he understands what makes a plot impactful is the emotional stakes the characters have invested in the events.
before taking over the main franchise, takeshi yamazaki was responsible for the miles edgeworth investigations spinoffs. i do enjoy both of those games - aai2 in particular is really strong. yamazaki does a great job with edgeworth's character arc even if i have some specific gripes with the duologys writing. i think theyre solid additions to the franchise. but you can see traces of this sort of misalignment in narrative priorities here as well. for example, the last case in aai1 is notorious for still going on for, like, an entire hour or two past the time when the last remaining plot point we care about has been revealed. because yamazaki seemingly had no understanding that That was the thing the case should have been about, and that should have been the final mic drop of the game. it just keeps going! he didn't know the game was done and he added a bunch more bullshit busywork after it that no one likes!
so yeah. without going into anything even as specific as how individual plotlines or character arcs were mishandled in aa5/6 that's really my overview What Went Wrong of those games.
#i genuinely might need to put my opinion on aa5 and 6 in my faq at this point#not because i mind getting a chance to talk about how much i hate these games. but just for due diligence#ace attorney#*there are two perfect ace attorney games: aa1 and plvspwaa#this got so long im so so sorry.#i think ill just hotlink this post in my faq because it hits most of my talking points about these games

okay, maybe he was gesturing too quickly, but he really couldn’t risk it ━if the person in front of him was really someone coming from the very same depths of the sea he used to be from, it might as well mean he was going to die. the sea and its people never took lightly on those unable to keep his promises, and nuri had failed over and over in recovering his voice from the humans who took it away from him. he needed more time, but his father would rather have him dead instead of giving him more chances ━he knew the general, he knew the way of the deep sea. “ i said i am not who you’re looking for. ” he lied, hoping that those words alone would convince the other ━many humans would sign their words instead of talking, it was not something so uncommon or frowned upon, it should protect him. “ i don’t even know what you’re talking about. ”

Akan sat facing the exterior part of cafe while his brown eyes scanned over lap top, with Microsoft Word and there's nothing to write for. His company needed him to write new novel after he successfully released new book, Royal Romance Book 3 as well as his newly mystery novel, Veil of Secrets. He was thinking of new idea and muse for new novels as well as sequel of some previously released novels with promising having a second book.
The medium sized cup of coffee was getting cold after long time waiting and untouched. Getting thirsty and quickly taking a sip of it then placing it at left side of table harshly until remaining of coffee spilled on nearby object, but it was not his. He snapped suddenly, looking to them as he said "Sorry I was stressed out. Does your stuff need some replacements?"

Follow-up question : I probably should've included this with the first question.
Since we talked about crests in japan and reading through your answer I remembered that British characters in the game also had the tendency to include a sort of symbol on their clothes and/or on their items, etc...So I was wondering if that was a thing at the time or if it's just the artists' choice.
(All of this talk about crests is making me consider designing one for myself for fun, you could say I've been absorbing the game's aesthetics and mood too much haha)
Thanks again!
(Referring to this ask)
For starters, I think it's very cool that you want to design your own, I say go for it!! I'd love to see it if you do. I haven't stopped thinking about the games since I beat them in February, so you're not alone there.
Second, when looking into this, my mind went to heraldry – the system of coats of arms and crests that was used in Europe - because those were symbols that showed one's heritage, like kamon (family crests). But I couldn't find any evidence to suggest that wearing a crest, coat of arms, or any other distinguishing symbol on clothing was a regular practice in Victorian England. By this era, heraldry was mostly used to decorate personal belongings and the home, paraded as a symbol of status regardless of whether a person could actually lay claim to that symbol's heritage. Someone tell me if I'm missing something, though!
(In editing this, I realized that pretty much everything after this point does nothing to answer your question...but you might find it interesting! It feels like a waste to cut, but feel free to stop reading here if you already got the answer you were looking for.)
Like kamon, heraldry was originally a way to distinguish friend from foe on the battlefield, but later evolved into a complex system that illustrated one's family history, as well as one’s place in the family. For example, a fleur-de-lis on a coat of arms meant that the bearer was the sixth son.
[All image IDs are in alt text]
[source]
Know who uses a fleur-de-lis as a cravat pin?
New headcanon acquired, lol. But more importantly, the first symbol is the van Zieks family crest, which you can also see on his shoulder patch and belt buckle. See this post for more interesting analysis on the fleur-de-lis as it relates to Barok.
Whereas the Japanese characters' outfits are very historically accurate, the British characters' outfits are more concerned with evoking a certain mood, or representing an aspect of the character themselves. Art director Kazuya Nuri said that he tried to keep the Japanese characters' designs grounded in reality, as opposed to Herlock, who was deliberately designed with non-Victorian elements:
In order to clearly express the era in which the game is set, I gave Ryunosuke and Susato looks that were typical of Japanese students from the Meiji era. (…) However, I was careful to balance the flashy characteristic flares I gave to them in order to preserve that more grounded feeling I was going for.
(...)
On top of that, I wanted to add some steampunk flavor to Sholmes and all things related to him. I gave him an outfit that is, at once, anachronistic, and a benchmark for the fantastical elements of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (it’s only one of the many fanciful things about the world in this game). [source]
And in another interview, he said this about Iris:
Her keywords were “girl genius”, which invoked images of a gothic appearance and the idea of a mad scientist. Slightly psychedelic elements. Her design might be a bit beyond her time. I made sure that the items she has with her form a pair with those of Holmes. [source]
In the in-game design notes, Nuri also mentions that Herlock's and Iris's symbols are meant to represent their relationship, with the gear (Herlock) surrounding and protecting the flower (Iris).
van Zieks’s design is an interesting combination of fantastic and realistic, inspired by vampires and werewolves, but also British military attire. And in fact, military uniforms bore the closest thing I could find to crest-like symbols. Each regiment had a unique insignia that could be found on on one’s helmet or cap, as a collar badge, on buttons, on the shoulder, or on a belt buckle. So in that sense, Barok's family crest belt buckle isn't totally fanciful; it could be a product of the military inspiration in his design.
Insignia designs varied greatly depending on division and the era, but the most recurring single visual motif was of a crown - a king's or a queen's, depending on the current monarch. Below is an example taken from the Household Cavalry uniform:
If anyone is interested in seeing more examples of insignias, or in exploring the world of British military uniforms, Uniformology is a fantastic resource. Not only is it incredibly comprehensive, but you can also contact the site owner if you have any difficult-to-answer questions. I've also included a couple links at the very end to more info on heraldry that might come in handy as you design your own symbol.
Thank you for asking - I hope that decently answers your question! If not, or if you have any follow-up questions, I encourage you and anyone else to ask any time.

A List of Increasingly Improbable Baby Names for Nathan + Nurie
Ridiculous baby names are one of my favorite hobbies. Nathan and Nurie have committed to a theme, and by golly I’m going to speculate! They haven’t outright said they’re using biblical names, but the fact that they chose Nehemiah for their first is pretty telling. (For the record, I like Nehemiah. Sue me.)
Obvious Next Moves
Noah. This was my top guess for N1. It’s different enough from Nehemiah that I could see them using it for N2 without any confusion.
Nicolas. New Testament names tend to be more chill. People might not even know you’re Christian if you name your kid Nicolas.
Nathaniel. They could honor Nathan without doing the whole “Jr” thing.
Nathan Jr. I always find it weird when people use “Jr” for anyone other than their first kid. I also wouldn’t put it past Nurthan to use both Nathan AND Nathaniel, as they are distinct figures in the Bible. Call one “Nate” and the other “Neil,” and you’re all set.
Naomi. The most obvious biblical girl N name out there. I’ll be shooketh if they don’t use it right away.
Noelle. There is no person named “Noelle” in the Bible, but it’s a name associated with Christmas and all that jazz.
Norah. It’s not ~technically~ biblical, but it does come from the Latin Honora, or honor, which feels nice and significant. And I think it has some roots in Hebrew.
Neveah. It’s heaven backwards. That’s biblical, right? (TBH the “heaven backwards” thing reminds me of the Satanic Panic and people freaking out that playing metal albums backwards would trick your kids into worshipping Satan. And yet the same pearl-clutchers love this name.)
A Little More Weird
Nicodemus. If Nicolas is too secular for you, here’s an alternative. Nico would be a cute nn.
Nimrod. Before Bugs Bunny convinced us all “nimrod” meant “idiot,” it was a reference to a super great hunter. Look out, Orion, Archer, and Hunter. Nimrod could be the next big thing.
Nemuel. It’s not a well-known biblical name, but it’s not implausible, either. I could see this working.
Nahum. It’s weird, yeah. But it’s not Spurgeon.
Nazareth. Apparently this isn’t an unheard of name choice in some parts of the world, used for boys and girls alike. I could see Zara or Zari as a nn.
Noa. If they don’t use Noah for a boy, I can see them using it for a girl.
Noadiah. Not sure if it’s pronounced NO-uh-DIE-uh or no-AH-dee-uh. (Now that I’m saying it in my southern drawl, it sounds almost exactly like “no idea.”) The latter pronunciation is different enough from Noah/Noa that they could theoretically use both.
Nekoda. Same vibes as the trendy Dakota, but ~biblical~.
Naamah. She’s the 4th woman named in the Bible, the sister of Tubal-Cain, IIRC. In some traditions, Naamah is considered a worship leader... but that might be too heretical for the IFB.
Secular Names Because We Ran Out of Biblical Ones
Nolan. I believe Jill Rodrigues used this name for one of her lost pregnancies. It could be a way for Nurie to honor her mother.
Nixon. He was a Republican, so maybe they like him?
Nestor. A good classical Greek name.
Natalie. It could be an honor name for Nathan without being too same-y.
Nova. It’s pretty and trendy, but it’s so far out from “Nehemiah” that I’m not sure they’ll go for it.
Nerys. I saw this on a list of awful baby names recently and I love it. YES I am a Deep Space 9 nerd, and it’s not the worst name you could pick from the show. (Though Kira would be a far, far better choice.)
Nymeria. I love this name, and I think Nurie is sheltered enough from the world that it being from A Song of Ice and Fire wouldn’t mean anything to her.
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING, NURIE
Naphtali. Though this one is originally a man’s name, I could see it working for a girl.
Nebuchadnezzar. NN Chad. (OK I know that you usually pronounce the “ch” more like “k,” but... the name Chad is literally sitting right there.)
Nephilim. NN Phil, in honor of Nurie’s brother. Also a great conversation starter--angels had babies with human women??? Genesis is NUTS, man.
Nisan.
Nun.
Nod.
Nymphas.
Narcissus.
The letter N doesn’t look like a real letter anymore.

#yeah okay i might be picking on big name fan over here#but wasn't adult ema designed first?#she was added to bonus case in original trilogy port to NDS#she was putvthere specifically to connect the trilogy with aa4#in japan trilogy rerelease and aa4 happened the same year#in fact aa4 released in april while the trilogy DS port was released in august#so called butch Ema was designed two whole years later#you can't really assasinate the character on their debut
Okay i was actually having a similar conversation with someone in the replies but talking in the replies sucks so this is a great excuse to add this to the body of the text.
First, point of contention: i didn't call her butch. I called her dykey. very important distinction. i would not call any of these designs butch. but she does look like a dyke
Second, clarification: i don't actually think it's character assassination i really like everything that's done with ema in aa4 i was just using that as a hyperbolic way to shit on her ugly shoes, which i would find to be a pretty incomprehensible design choice even in isolation. don't take it too seriously as an opinion im just being nitpicky
Anyway, I wasn't 100% sure about this when I was replying to that person in the notes earlier so I went and double checked some stuff and can definitely say aa4 ema's design/concept came after RFTA ema's! For starters it's not true that RFTA was design to tie the trilogy into aa4, it was pretty specifically to give more context to what's going on with edgeworth in AA2:
he fifth episode, “Rise from the Ashes”, was added 4 years later when the game was brought to the Nintendo DS. When creating episode 5, Mr. Takumi wanted to make sure it linked up story-wise with why Edgeworth disappeared in AA2, so he approached it from the angle of “what would be the most damaging to Edgeworth’s psyche?” x
AA4 did come out in Japan in April of 2007, but the DS port of AA1 actually came out in september of 2005. I think you're getting a little bit confused since AA3 released for DS august 2007, but there wasn't a 'trilogy rerelease' for the DS the same way there is for PC/modern consoles; each game was released separately, as a stand-alone cartridge.
Kazuya nuri specifically mentions having to re-visit ema's design for aa4:
Interviewer: Akane (Ema) also changed a lot, but she did become a police detective. Nuri: In Yomigaeru Gyakuten, Akane was in a similar role like Minuki in this game, so if we had her appear like that again, their roles would overlap. So I also had to change her design like that. x
Not only that, he specifies in a different interview that ema's was the very first design he worked on for the franchise!
Nuri: And then there is Hōzuki Akane (Ema Skye), from Yomigaeru, Gyakuten Saiban 4 and Gyakuten Kenji (Ace Attorney Investigations). She was the first design I made when I came to work on this series, so I’m fond of her too. x
So it's pretty clear cut!
when people talk about character assassination in ace attorney 4 they always talk about phoenix but no one ever talks about ema's shoes. she would not fucking wear those. you're gonna tell me the ribbon-tied kitten heels are really something miss Dyke Boots in the middle there would pick to wear after a few years? don't make me laugh. ignoring the fact that it's ugly as fuck with the capris, aesthetics aside, it's just the single most immersion breaking design choice in the entire game. there's not a world where ema skye is wearing heels to the job she hates every single day. fake news.

a starter from Nuri for @sovrumana because TWO can play at the enabler game
Dark. It was dark.. getting darker? It couldn’t tell. It seemed to have lost the humans and their guns, and those bullets specially made to put something like It down but.. It had failed in part of It’s own mission, as was evident by the dripping bullet wounds on It’s torso and leg. The weapon panted quietly, moving deeper into the forest. Turning into It’s weaponized form would have been smarter, more preferable in this context, but with these wounds? With these bullets stopping It from healing? The turn would kill It. So it panted quietly as the world got darker and darker, eventually collapsing against one of the thousands of trees around it. Both hands clasped over the large, bleeding wound on Its torso, looking down for a moment, seeing all the red, seeing the way its bare frame shivered and.. ah... Tired... It was so tired from running for so long. And the world was getting....darker still, senses hazing, blurring slowly as the rain fell around It... Its eyes were heavier now too.. Perhaps it could--
Snap!
And all at once, it’s dulled blue eyes focused at the sound of a snapping twig, weak frame tensing. It.. couldn’t move quickly, but it would have to, if They’d come for It, to take It back to the facility. It wouldn’t let them take It back alive. It bared It’s teeth in the direction of the snap, a low, animalistic growl ripping from Its shivering frame, even as everything starter to... tilt, just a little.

starter com @fairypadrinho.
onde: praia de seatopia.
“Nuri!”
