---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Edward had all-but-hobbled in the door, shrugging off his heavy overcoat with a tired sigh that he didn’t realise Henry could hear, hanging his coat up on his hook, before realising Henry’s big green woollen coat was already hanging next to it.
Henry came to lean on the doorway, arms folded, as he watched Edward straighten his spine, plaster on a smile, before turning away from the coat hooks in preparation for facing his partner.
The surprise and almost… panic? that went flashing across Edward’s face when he realised Henry was already right there and watching him was, well, Henry might go as far to say concerning.
But it was gone as soon as it came.
“Oh!” Edward smiled, walking over as perfectly normally as he could manage, “I didn’t realise you were already home today, Hen. I thought you had a late train.”
Henry was watching his face closely. That was how he could see the pain in Edward’s eyes he was doing his best to hide.
“Mm,” he agreed, straightening up and opening his arms, letting Edward walk right into them for a hug. “No, I finish early on Thursdays because I have to pull the Flying Kipper in the morning, remember?”
“Right. Of course,” Edward conceded, burying his face in Henry’s sweater. Henry’s lips tugged upwards at how Edward’s words were muffled in the warm wool.
But then he felt the man in his arms tense, and Edward’s head snapped up.
“And you stayed up waiting for me?” he asked, the realisation written anxiously across his face. “You didn’t have to do that.”
Henry shook his head fondly, before leaning down to kiss Edward’s hair.
“I wanted to,” he shrugged.
Edward was shaking his head too, but he still grabbed Henry by the collar to give him a proper kiss before he could escape.
As Edward pulled back and started to disentangle himself from Henry’s arms, Henry slipped an arm around his partner’s waist and took some of Edward’s weight off his partner’s poor, aching feet.
“Hen,” Edward deadpanned, hand tugging at Henry’s to try and convince him to let go. “I’m fine.”
“You’re clearly in pain,” Henry shook his head. “Is your ankle playing up?”
“My…? Dear, that crash was months ago.”
“Edward, you know better than most that it can linger. Weak ankles are no fun. And especially when the air pressure changes,” Henry fixed him with a look. “It’s going to rain overnight, I can feel it in my back as well.”
“Fine,” Edward huffed, leaning his head against Henry’s side and finally letting Henry help him into the other room. “I was on my feet all day. Thomas and James had another argument this morning - and a big one at that - and they’re both refusing to talk to each other for the moment, which made today… just…”
“Bloody awful?” Henry offered.
“…Challenging, was what I was going to say,” Edward finished with a snort, groaning slightly as Henry helped ease him down into an armchair. “God… Hen, don’t tell anyone, but I think I’m getting old.”
“You? Old?” Henry joked, drifting away to the kitchen to finish making the cup of tea he’d been preparing for Edward, for when he got home. “Never.”
--- --- ---
Edward leant back, his eyes already drifting closed, but he perked up as Henry came back with a cup of tea in one hand and some dinner in the other.
They chatted for a while about their day, and as Henry got more and more into the story he was telling of a particularly beautiful bird he saw in the forest earlier that day, he caught himself as he realised Edward was watching him, chin in hand, with such an adoring little smile that it made him blush on the spot.
As the words got stuck in his mouth, Edward blinked. “Oh, don’t stop!” he sat up, reaching out and taking Henry’s hand. “I was enjoying your story.”
Henry had to be about as red as his own beloved scarf by now. Which, of course, only made Edward laugh at him.
“You’re a sap,” he chuckled, flicking some of Henry’s long hair back over his shoulder.
“You’re horrible,” Henry shot back with no fire as he covered his face with his remaining hand. “I stay up just for you, and you bully me.”
“I’m not bullying you,” Edward smirked, shifting out of his seat so he could lean in close, guiding Henry’s face back to his. “I’m flirting with you. Is it working?”
Henry laughed at that, noses brushing. “Absolutely,” he snorted, before accepting the kiss Edward gave him with pleasure.
It was obvious, however, that Edward was – by this point – barely awake, and Henry had to agree that it was definitely time for bed. He got to his feet slowly, before offering Edward a hand up. When Edward took it, but didn’t rise straight away, trying to hide how his brow was furrowing with the effort it was going to take, Henry smiled a little smile that was almost a touch sad, before bending down to scoop Edward up in his arms.
It was easy. Edward was smaller than him and Henry was very strong. But it ripped a squeak out of his partner, who clutched at his jumper as Henry rose to his full height and started ferrying him towards the bedroom.
“I can walk!” he protested, a flush rising on his face.
“I know,” Henry said amicably. “And I can carry you.”
“I’m not that weak,” Edward grumbled, a little too genuinely to not actually be upset, but folding his arms as he resigned himself to his fate anyway.
Nonetheless, his words stung a little, so close to the heart of the real problem but yet so far, and Henry took a moment to pause as he shouldered the bedroom door open to lean his forehead against Edward’s.
“I’m not saying you are,” he murmured. “I know how strong you are, Ed. But I also know you never let people help you. Please, let me help you? That’s all I’m trying to do.”
Edward melted a little at that, and managed to kiss Henry’s nose in silent thanks before Henry withdrew, chasing a giggle out of his partner.
“Well, aren’t you conscientious,” he teased, and Henry rolled his eyes playfully as he set Edward down on the bed.
“I do so try, just for you, Eddie-boy,” he shot back, but the joking-sharpness of his words was contradicted by how his calloused fingers brushed Edward’s hair back off his face tenderly. “Now, I have to be up in six hours. Let’s get ready for bed, hm?”
--- --- ---
Now both in pyjamas and curled up together in bed, Henry closed his eyes and let his breathing slow, trying to let his thoughts quieten enough for sleep to take him – because heavens knows he needed it.
Then, Edward shifted a little, and in the mostly-darkness, Henry cracked open his eyes to see Edward’s silhouette propped up on one elbow, looking down at him. He didn’t say anything for a moment – and then he just sighed, quiet and oddly forlorn.
“Ed?” Henry murmured. His name just wandered so easily off Henry’s tongue – he loved how it felt so familiar, and right.
“You didn’t have to wait up for me,” Edward whispered, and there was his hand cupping Henry’s face.
“Don’t worry about it,” Henry replied, eyes drifting closed again despite himself.
“I’m keeping you up.”
“I don’t mind.”
“I love you, Hen.”
“Love you, too,” Henry smiled, and he slowly shifted so he could pull Edward back into his arms, before settling back, curling around Edward in that way his partner always loved. “But we’re sleeping now.”
“Mm… good idea,” Edward agreed, and Henry smiled as he felt Edward bury in close.
It wasn’t until Edward’s breathing had evened out, and for his partner’s gentle snores to fill the air between them before Henry was finally able to close his eyes and drift off to sleep himself.

Writing fully canon-compliant ttte fanfic is SO humbling. Like that's the true test of a writer. Bc half of your characters cannot nod and they do not have arms for hugging or waving or gesturing. You've gotta really lean into facial expressions and word choices and you've gotta figure out what noises mean what. This is why I love the slightly exaggerated movements in later seasons.
