Now that Sha Po Lang is home, I checked out the upcoming releases by Seven Seas. Some new series are. Not my personal cup of tea.

I'm not usually for a modern setting, but if I like priest's writing I may get into Zhen Hun. I will also likely be interested in Meng Xi Shi's Wushuang. I might get sad thinking I'm running out of (new) series for the new year, but thank goodness a lot of the series I'm into are far from done publishing just yet.

Ecstatic to have received Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Volume 5 Special Edition in the mail (just seconds ago). The artists have created masterpieces! It is a stunning edition, I love all the extras: the five postcards, the two posters, the stickers, the Wangxian bookmark and the notebook! I'll probably finish m.d.zs. today and I'm debating if I should start with Yu//wu first and hope to finish it in time before Sh.a P/o La..ng comes home because I want to read that one the moment it arrives. I'm saying I'm debating but I made up my mind as I write this; I'll try anyway.

Look I'm still learning toddler Mandarin (classes starting again soon!) so when I went "What's the character's title/novel called again" I ended up translating it in my head and somehow got it right.

When did that happen? It genuinely felt like overnight (after months of feeling like I made no progress at all). I start recognising characters in tweets and short (short!) basic sentences and I could cry!

(Oh! She said "Do you know?", I'm a genius!)

When "ah I'm not sure, it's a long phrase" becomes "give me a second - ah - it's this?", that's such an amazing feeling.

I'm watching mdzs donghua second season with my sister and she saw adult nie huaisang in the op and first thing she said was "he looks like a betrayer" AND IM DEAD. this is like playing poker i gotta shut my mouth SO MUCH

I'll address it, actually. T/g//cf and its interpersonal dynamics are so scary to me on a personal level, it'll be a long while before I attempt to read a novel about gods or genuine immortals ever again.

And I'm not just talking about just the mere concept of wandering about long enough that in the meantime the earth herself has reshaped, kingdoms haven't just fallen but are forgotten entirely, and no one speaks your native language anymore. Time passing you by and in solitude even in the presence of others to such an extreme extent, I feel nauseous just thinking about it.

But, no, that alone wouldn't bother me too much if there was some companionship to be found in the misery of it all.

I hurt from the helplessness (keeping it name-drop-free because I don't want this in the tags,) because you have Officials who are caught up in the middle of centuries-old conflicts that started long before they were even born, and now they're just collateral damage without being able to do anything about it.

Worse, I feel like no one in the main cast (aside from the pairing, which is almost the sole opportunity for genuine (hurt/)comfort) even approaches sentiments of "like" towards one another. There's no gentle comradery or support anywhere? There's too much said, done, circumstances outside their control, or things left unsaid with years and years of festering like the darkest of scorches.

With generational gaps and an unwillingness to relate to one another, there isn't a team-up strong enough to be entirely genuine and/or long-lasting. And with how relationships are revealed throughout, I can't bring myself to enjoy a dynamic between characters because I know there's (going to be) so much lingering resentment.

I know a part, if not all, is the core of the story and an integral part of just why hua//lian is such an unlikely and extraordinary manifestation of love.

I'm not saying all of this in criticism of the novel or author (whom I love dearly, mwah.) In fact: the story is very brilliantly effective.

It simply hits a nerve within me that feels too fragile to expose to the elements as it were lol.

Maybe one day I'll finish the series, because it's genuinely good, but it might never be more than bittersweet for me.

I never use abbreviations of names myself because I have trouble reading them and it always takes me a while to figure out who it's supposed to refer to, but the funniest mistake I made to date is "Mo Ran -> mr" because, I don't know, I first thought it was some character only referred to as a mysterious man or something, which was so intriguing to me, but then I realised it had something to do with Mo Ran and my brain thought "right, there are multiple versions of Mo Ran, like the 0.5 and 1.0, and I haven't finished the story so they're probably referring to a time that Mo Ran pretended to be an unsuspecting traveller" but a second later the realisation hits me like a sledgehammer.

今天是大天！Scared and excited. I'm relatively confident in reading at a toddler's level and comprehensive listening, but my pronunciation and tone recognition is so, so bad. That's what class is for, I know, and yet my every '请问，老师？' causes my buttcheeks to clench. Let's have fun!

I am experiencing this sheepish shame because Mo Ran asked what a word meant and Chu Wanning looks at him like he's a dumb fuck and the chapter is called 'this venerable one is illiterate, deal with it,'

and I also didn't know what that word meant.
