hot take but if your "show don't tell" in your story is taken so far that literally nothing is spelled out and by rights the characters themselves shouldn't even be able to figure out what each other are talking about, you need to reconsider your commitment to that idea

#this post brought to you by the thousand questions I had after every chapter of a fic I was reading #at first I thought it was because my familiarity with canon has waned considerably #then I thought it was because it was a slight au #but no #it was because revelations were always purely internal #and even the famously emotionally incompetent character nevertheless understood exactly what the other was thinking #to say nothing of the short declaratory sentences said after these revelations #which in context could mean multiple things!!#the others in the room weren't privy to her thoughts!!!#they don't know what she means why are they acting like they do!!!#the number of times someone should have said “hey just to be clear you mean x right?”#and it never happened 😫#*I should note that the revelations were so internal that even the reader wasn't privy to them #that's the problem
