Chuunin.

  She was now a Chuunin and yet... the achievement didn't mean much to her. The Naras had offered to do a small joint celebration for her and Shikamaru but she hadn't accepted. Her heart just wasn't in it, something that they had all understood.

  From where she was sitting on the roof of the Firesword Clan compound, Ami could see much of the rebuilding that had taken place in Konoha. The Chuunin Exams turned attack had caused mass destruction to the village. But in other ways, it had helped strengthen relations between the people. With the Hyuuga and Uchiha Clans being two of those.

  Normally the silver eyed kunoichi would be down there helping wherever she could. However Genma and Hayate had ordered her to take a break. Hence the reason she was now sitting on the rooftop, arms wrapped around her knees. Sounds of someone approaching could be heard but Ami didn't look away from the village. Letting them speak first.

Ami had never known a time when she wasn't fully aware of her surroundings. Her father's drinking habits, unsettling feelings and the occasional nightmare caused by Tatsuya's memories, often had her sleeping with one eye open. Whether she was being followed by ANBU and Root or simple bandits, little went past her unnoticed.

Silvery black eyes glanced sideways at him briefly, having not missed the sudden sign of tension.

"...It'll be easier to mourn my Clan without memories being everywhere."

Grimness slipped into her blank tone as she spoke. Then something in the distance caught the young woman's attention and her right hand slipped down to rest on the handle of a now visible sword. Silvery black eyes sharpened as she called on the dragon's heightened senses to identify the chakra sources.

"I know. I have been avoiding his grasp ever since I was 9 years old and the lone survivor of a C-Rank that went wrong. You should get out of here; there's a ROOT team three miles out and approaching fast." That last part was a warning, for she didn't want Kakashi getting caught off guard.

She was correct. Kakashi had been sent out numerous times to observe her while he was under ANBU orders. Every time he had fixated his sharingan on her, she had immediately shifted her attention in his direction--something that had always been of interest in itself.

The mention of Danzo brought Kakashi back to the present and he felt a ripple of tension crawl its way up his spine.

"Sounds like you're much better off then."

And it sounded like Danzo was down another object of interest, though, what were the chances he wasn't contemplating removing her out of caution? He tended to destroy things he couldn't control, after all.

"There's a lot of time for Danzo to intercept you between here and the Land of Wind." Kakashi cautioned her.

  Peaceful wasn't usually a word associated with a demon but the dragon had always been different. It took a lot to get him riled as he had no interest in hurting anyone, especially his host. But no one was completely immune from losing their temper and neither dragon or jinchūriki wanted to destroy the Sand village.

  Although not as close to the redhead as she was to Temari and Kankuro, Ami could still see each sign easily. A flicker of pain shot across her features as burns started forming on her arms, the result of her fight for control. But she would prefer to get burned, instead of the other more catastrophic result.

"Beyond the walls. I will not put your people at risk, not matter what the cost is to myself."

"Please tell me that I am imagining someone stalking my little brother." Izuna requested of the young Kunoichi as he dropped a bento wrapped with a dark purple cloth in her lap. He stretched his arms above his head then before stepping in front of her, hand resting on his sword as he gave a playful grin. "If not then I propose that after training we go visit that section of the woods. I hear the overgrowth there is just awful and you can always use more work on your Katon control."

  The silver haired Firesword heiress didn't startle at hearing the sudden request. "I could say that; but I'd much prefer Shisui-san to be alive. He's being stalked." She looked up from the book she was reading and blinked, looking vaguely surprised at the unexpected bento. Aside from Shisui, Itachi and Sasuke were the only other two members of the Uchiha Clan she interacted with. So it was rather odd having Izuna track her down, near the Forest of Death.

  "Hello to you too, Izuna-san and thank-you for the bento. My Katon control is fine on it's own, however I need practice in using it with my Genso Kesshō."

  No one, not even the Hokage himself, had quite known what to do with the young medic. Putting her in a new team was certainly the more sensible idea in the long run. But both Nara Shikaku and Inuzuka Tsume vehemently vetoed putting her into another team so soon after the fatal C-tank turned A-rank. The two Clan Heads had got used to the quiet heiress, for she often brought her little brother to the play dates set up between the Clans.

  It had been Shikaku who first brought up the option of Shisui and Itachi’s team. As a medic, Ami would be invaluable to both Shinobi, like she would have been on any team. But he also knew that with time, the two Uchihas would pull her out from the detached mask she had hidden behind. Still, there was information about Ami that had been kept from her information file. He had left a note for Shisui, telling him that she was a jinchūriki but not providing anything else.

  After some reassurance from the Hokage, Ami avoided most of the high traffic routes and headed to her apartment. She had visited the civilian market place earlier, having needed to get some new casual clothing and equipment to refill her tailoring kit. But her plans to visit the shops catering for ninjas had been disrupted by the meeting. Not that she minded. It simply meant that she would have to go after meeting up with the other two members of her new team.

  Unlike some others she could think of, the detached soon to be teenager didn't care for flashy jutsus. She preferred sticking to the shadows or observing unnoticed, making her useful for information gathering. Neither Shisui or Itachi had told her where to meet them, so most would have had to search Konoha. That wasn’t the case here. With a bit of guidance from Tatsuya, her partner, she quickly zoned in on her teammates' chakras.

  “Had to find you first, Shisui-san.” She answered quietly, blank silver eyes hiding the wariness and uncertainty she felt at being put on a new team. Itachi, she knew slightly as she sometimes kept an eye on Sasuke for him. Shisui on the other hand was more of a unknown to her. Mostly because she tended to keep to herself a lot since returning from Suna, not really interacting outside of those she knew.

  Ami tilted her head slightly, studying him and adapting to the way that one side of her vision darkened. Although she couldn’t see the colour that her left eye had turned, the younger kunoichi knew that it was pitch black with no iris. It usually happened when the dragon was taking more of an interest than normal. Not that she was surprised as Tatsuya could easily tell if someone was trustworthy or not.

  “Yes I am. Although.. I don’t know how much help I’ll be to you and Itachi-san.” She admitted softly, before side eyeing him with mostly hidden curiosity. “That sounds like a plan.”

V: Childhood & Genin | Raised in Suna Not trusting the man that her husband was turning into, Jo gained permission (with help from Nara Shikaku) to register her newborn daughter as a resident of the Hidden Sand Village. This meant that Ami is raised by her maternal grandfather to have a more normalised childhood. She grows up with the Sand Siblings and makes a habit of drifting in Gaara's direction, seemingly unconcerned that he could easily kill her.

Gap between Naruto & Shippuden

V: Wandering Medic Despite becoming the only other Chunnin alongside Shikamaru, the Elders of Konoha gave the now lone Firesword two choices: Either join one of the big Clans or hand in her forehead protector and live as a civilian. But with her family now dead and all the Clans being firmly in her corner, Ami swaps her Konoha headband for one with Firesword written in Kanji on it. She leaves the village not as a missing-nin but as a wandering medic with family ties that link her only to Sunagakure.

A faint smile formed at the familiar scent of blood and sand that filled the air. Ami had disappeared after her grandfather's funeral and few had seen her since, not even the Sand Siblings. So it wasn't a surprise when the redhead suddenly appeared behind her. She turned to face him, her weariness more visible now than it had been in public. "Gaara-san. I- thank-you."

"I was heading this way when he shot past, so it wasn't a problem." Ami let Naruto down after a moment and caught the keys he tossed at her. " Oi kit, don't forget you have Taijutsu practice with me tonight."

"I won't, Ami nee-chan!" The blond beamed at her and darted in for a hug, before disappearing into the classroom.

"Yeah--- Thanks for returning him." He fixed the squirming blond an unimpressed look before gesturing towards the classroom door.

"He made a break for it when a couple of my other students distracted me. I was just about to come collect him."

Stopping on the border between the lands of Fire and Wind wasn't an action that the silver haired teen tended to do. But then, she wasn't really used to having anyone else accompanying her on her missions either. She had been sent on a joint two man mission, with the other shinobi coming from Suna.

Although Tsunade wouldn't say who it was exactly, the older medic did mention that she was specifically requested. Ami was used to dealing with both villages and was liked by most of the shinobi, despite her own hidden jinchūriki status. She had never treated any of the Sand nin differently after the attack, which most of them appreciated.

A hint of chakra coming from the direction of Suna had her scanning the horizon for any signs of her mission partner. With the sunlight beginning to fade as the day passed into late afternoon, there ws nothing she could do but wait- and read the mission scroll again.

Each evening, they had the same conversation before the younger of the two headed up to the rooftops. A routine born from countless hours of late nights, little sleep and love. From chakra fluctuations to the restlessness of the dragon she held. It was one of the few constants in her life , much like her grandfather and all of the Sand Siblings were.

Ami slipped out onto the roof of the Tsuya family house and went to her usual place when she wanted to be alone. From here, she could easily see over most of Suna despite night settling in fast. But very few would actually be able to find her, unless they knew where to look. Not that anyone but the bravest would go looking for her of course.

She pulled out a blanket and a book out from a hidey hole on the roof, before setting the blanket out. Normally it was Gaara who avoided her on the full moon because of Shukaku. Although in the past week, it had been her avoiding everyone for reasons only known to her grandfather and the Kazekage.

All because of a single letter, which had managed to completely upend her entire world in just a few sentences. The young redhead was the only one she hadn't managed to avoid completely, due to him knowing most of her hiding places. Except for this one. At least for now anyway.

A soft sigh broke the silent air, before she let the book pull her to another place. Unaware that it would soon be broken and her peace destroyed.

  The Third Hokage simply didn't know what to do with the silver haired kunoichi. And she knew it. Sending her back to the Academy was pointless; but putting her on a new Genin team so soon after the fatal mission to Suna wouldn't go down well. No matter what the Firesword Clan Head said. So in the meantime, she was allowed to train alone while they tried to figure something out.

  Her late Genin team; Rinji Nura, Rai Satoshi and Hari Hideki, their Sensei. No one had expected to lose them on a seemingly simple C-Rank mission. She had tried to warn them that something was wrong but her warnings and concerns had been ignored. The two boys had never wanted a third teammate, let alone one who was both younger and had graduated earlier than her year group. The result being that most of her team were taken fatally off guard when the bandits attacked.

  Ami knew that Hiruzen tended to send a Jounin, an new ANBU member or the occasional Chuunin to check up on her. Partly to make sure she was alright and partly to test how good their tracking and stealth skills were. Very few shinobi had managed to get close enough without her knowing, despite being within the Forest of Death when she trained. Although still officially a 'Genin, the hidden Jinchuuriki was beyond that level now.

  Neither the Hokage nor those who had gone through the 'test' said a word though. Leaving it as a surprise, for Ami tended to hide her strength instinctively. Her lips quirked into a rarely seen half smile when she sensed the approaching seemingly hidden shinobi. "Might want to work on hiding your chakra. It's like a beacon to those with enhanced senses." She called out quietly, not even looking up to see who it was.

  Anyone else, even Naruto and she would have spoken against them retrieving her. Yet the slight nod at his words meant that she was trusting him enough to not disagree. "Any medic will need to be able to deal with burns." A hand shot to her forehead as she spoke, before she suddenly vanished in a whirl of silver fire.

  Her control shattered just moments after reappearing deep in the desert, far outside the safety of Suna's walls. Few could calm a dragon's unleashed fury until it cooled; nor fully contain the rapidly surging levels of demonic chakra. Not even Ami could but she kept it away from the village and anything living, ignoring the price she would pay later. Between fighting to keep her demon's fury at bay and the pain in doing so, the hours ticked by completely unnoticed.

  The growling in her mind was getting louder but she ignored it as best she could right then. Focusing her attention on Gaara made it a little bit easier to keep what little control she had. But that piece of respite wasn’t going to last long.

  Ami looked blank for a moment, caught by surprise at the questions. She was used to dealing with any resulting injuries on her own, often not returning until fully healed. "My control is barely there. Focusing on you is helping but I need to get away from here’. Ringing in my ears, headache and my skin’s burning. Yes I will.”

“But… Gaara? If you don’t hear from me in a day, don’t send anyone after me. It’s not worth the risk.” ’I’m not worth the risk.’ She didn’t say that out loud.

He held Ami’s gaze for her own sake. Her eyes were an empty and eerie black, bottomless pits of ink. It would not be long now. When her focus waned, when the edges of her control frayed and unraveled, he knew she would have the sense to flee beyond the village wall.

“You’ll be monitored at all times, of course. If contact is lost and twenty-four hours elapses, I will search for you myself.” From anyone else and in any other tone this declaration might have rang with a passionate heroism. From Gaara it came in the detached, calculating voice of a former commander of war. “At that point, I will be the only one capable of retrieving you with both of us intact.”

Her main verses are set in canon, although I haven't seen or read anything about Boruto. Nor do I intend to at the moment. But that doesn't mean I won't RP with muses from that verse. I can cross that bridge when it comes up though.

If given the choice to live in either Konoha or Suna, Ami would choose Suna everytime.

Despite being a Leaf kunoichi as well as her friends and (pre Chuunin exams) Clan living in Konoha, she has always preferred the hotter and more sandy climate of the desert.

The Hidden Sand Village is where her maternal grandfather lives, so she is a known visitor there across the years from childhood upwards. But it was also the place that Tatsuya, the dragon residing inside of her, had once called home. Long before humans had ever tried to settle there.

"Want to see 'ji-san!"

Ami hid a small smile at the tired but still excited words, not that she was completely surprised. She was escorting the Konoha born little boy to the Hidden Sand as per his mother's death wish. So that he could grow up with his father's family, instead of in Konoha in the orphanage. "There it is. Your Oji-san said he'll be waiting for us in the Kazekage Tower."

The not quite five year old peered in the direction of the entrance to the village and pouted when he couldn't see it anymore. Although he kept having to clear his eyes, due to the sand whipping up around them. He clung to her hand, giving up on keeping his eyes open when the sudden sandstorm became too much.

It wasn't unknown for sandstorms to suddenly and rapidly form in the desert like this. Yet it was still an experience that could be incredibly dangerous for even the most seasoned traveller should they encounter one. She pulled her Hitai-ate off and wrapped it around his head, using the cloth to protect his eyes. A layer of chakra protected him from any debris that could hurt him, before she picked the boy up and took off running.

This wasn't the first time that the silver haired kunoichi had been caught in a sudden sandstorm but never had she been escorting someone at the same time. As she headed in the general direction of the village, Ami sent out chakra pulses to make sure she didn't get lost. It also served another purpose: letting the Sand shinobi know that someone was caught in the storm.
