“Tee!” Stevie yells back over FaceTime.

“I got you a present” Trevor smiles

“Me?” She’s so excited and he nods “Ask your dad”

Stevie shouts at Jack to bring her, her gift. He brings it through — it is a giant box wrapped in a bow.

She begins ripping into it and finds a huge teddy bear along with a lot of chocolate.

“Candy!!”

Trevor definitely gets an earful from you and Jack about the excess of sugar.

“You gotta remember and share with Ozwold remember” Trevor finishes.

Stevie rolls her eyes “it’s Ozzy”

“Whatever you say Steven”

The cats I grew up with were adopted by my parents before I was born and had been at the shelter 6 months when my parents adopted them as they were white, Big was deaf and Little absolutly hated the shelter and was grumpy at everyon who looked at them.

When Big got ill (and stopped eating so we unfortunatly had to have him put to sleep) we all grieved but especially Little who went as far as patting white cats she saw on the TV.

So we adopted Ozzy (Oz, Mr Ozwold) and Socks to keep her company. The boys had been at the shelter again for six months as they were a pair of brothers and Socks had a heart murmur. Funnily we had seen a different pair of cats who had also been at the shelter six months (a mother and daughter pair of white cats of which one was deaf (deafness seems to be more common in white cats))

When Little died she was about 23 and we didn't get another cat as we still had both boys and three cats is hard work.

Socks got very ill last new years so we had him put to sleep. And again Ozz was obviously grieving. We adopted Mia to give him some company, not entirely successfully. Mia had only been at the shelter a couple of weeks but was extreamly unhappy there and very skittish when we first brought her home.

She the started to curl up under my duvet with me overnight and demand fuss and play.

This was meant to be a quick warm up, but it turned into a comic that I’ve wanted to draw for a while. This is something that is extremely important to me, and I appreciate it if you read it.

A while ago, I heard a story that broke my heart. A family went a cat shelter to adopt. The daughter fell in love with a 3-legged cat. The father straight up said “absolutely not”. Because he was missing a leg. That cat was that close to having a family that loved him, but the missing leg held him back. Why?!

Many people have the initial instinct of “nope” when they see an imperfect animal. I get it, but less-adoptable does NOT mean less loveable. 9 out of 10 people will choose a kitten over an adult cat. And those 10% that would get an adult cat often overlook “different” animals.

All I want people to do is be open to the idea of having a “different” pet in their lives. Choose the pet that you fall in love with, but at least give all of them a fair shot at winning your heart.

Don’t dismiss them, they deserve a loving home just as much as any other cat. They still purr, they still love a warm lap, they still play, they still love you. Trust me, next time you are in the market for a new kitty, just go over to that one cat that’s missing an eye and see what he’s all about!
