aurora had urgently asked her ex to meet her at the local coffee shop they'd frequented before their breakup. her heart was racing as the blonde thought long and hard about how she was going to phrase this. they hadn't been together for a few years now, but she had forgotten to tell her grandmother and the rest of her extended family they'd broken up. grandma bootsie always liked her ex, even better than she did aurora, probably. her grandma wasn't getting any better in health and the big family reunion was coming up. the last family reunion, rory had been with her ex and they'd attended with her. she had thought they'd be together forever at that time, but clearly she was wrong.

as they walked into the cafe, aurora stood and awkwardly waved them over, heart pounding so loud that she couldn't hear the ambient music anymore. ❝ uh, hey. sorry to spring this on you, but... well, you remember grandma bootsie, right ? ❞ she couldn't believe she was actually doing this. maybe it would have been easier to pretend she caught the flu or something. ❝ okay, so funny story, but well, grandma bootsie and other members of the family think we're still together ! when i was talking to my aunt, apparently grandma had gotten it in her head that we're engaged now too, they all think that now... i don't have the heart to tell any of them we aren't together anymore. will you pretend to be my fiance at the family reunion this weekend ? i'll pay for everything -- the gas to get there, food, all of it. ❞ she hadn't been this nervous since she was forced to meet her father's new wife.

rory winced as jacqueline called her aurora, it felt foreign coming from the other woman and quite honestly made her stomach churn. being called by her real name by her was just another reminder that they weren't together anymore. ❝ i -- well, when you put it like that... ❞ she trailed off, clearing her throat. ❝ it's just one weekend. free food, fun vibes. please ? i'll never ask for anything again. we can even stage a breakup if that'll make you more inclined to come. ❞ seeing her ex again brought back these feelings that she'd worked so hard to get rid of. she was trying to move on. maybe a part of her would never move on. their breakup had hit her pretty hard and yet she could never bring herself to hate jacqueline or forget her. she didn't have much going for her since the breakup, so it was easy to dwell. the dance studio was doing okay, but they were on a short off-season break within the competition season, so all she did was teach technique at the moment.

blues scanned over jacqueline's beautiful features, hoping to find a sign that she was at least considering saying yes. aurora wasn't trying to fully beg, so if her ex said no again, she'd just make some kind of excuse to not go. she would just continue to let grandma bootsie think that they were together and just waiting to get married, wanting a long engagement. then eventually, if rory did find somebody else, she'd just tell her family that her and jacqueline didn't work out and then a few months later introduce her new partner. that would work, right ? lies leading to more lies.

jacqueline had thought of a thousand reasons why she had been summoned to that café. maybe her ex was in a life-or-death situation? or, worse… needed money? she should have guessed that jacqueline was still the same financially irresponsible person as before. the anxiety made her arrive early and wait by the entrance. as soon as her eyes met aurora's, her heart raced, and her stomach twisted. it was just because of the apprehension, right? nothing to do with seeing aurora again, nothing at all!

and who could ever forget grandma bootsie?, she thought when the other started speaking. maybe she hadn’t expressed it well at the time, but she had been so grateful to be part of those family reunions. it was something she had never experienced with her own family before. "are you for real, aurora?" she rarely called the blonde by her name during the relationship, usually using more fitting nicknames like: rorie, little rory, rora, princess, and the list goes on. but they weren't together anymore, and the emphasis on the way she said her name made that very clear. "do you think i'm that broke to agree to something like that?" she was indeed. "so, i should just put my dignity aside and pretend, just because you forgot to tell your family we ended things? is that what you're saying?"
