#otto might not be devoted to hobert per se but he is devoted to the family and if the lord is the embodiment of the family it fits #and making your name through violence like daemon with the gold cloaks and his war in the stepstones to the point of becoming the king there #aemond with his knightly training and his love for the deadly art but no love for the pageantry of it and spurning gallantry#and otto in marrying off his child daughter to the king he is of age with in the name of self-promotion and the family name
i think there might be something to be said about how arguably the three men who started the dance are all second sons. doomed to live in your older brother’s shadow forever so you devote yourself to him and make your own name through violence

#op tagged otto daemon and aemond but i would also add larys tyland and (in the show) vaemond - all arguably involved in starting the war #luke also may count - not as a dance starter obvs - but as aemond's maimer and the first victim it's interesting he is also a second son #i mean. lbr. grrm *loves* the second son trope in main asoiaf itself #(tyrion; ned; jon *and* bran as second sons to robb; sandor; quentyn also counts as his sister inherits; see also arya's exemplifier quote: #“It wasn't fair. Sansa had everything. Sansa was two years older; maybe by the time Arya had been born there had been nothing left.” #not to mention the whole mercenary organization named the second sons embodying making their own name through violence) #but in f&b/hotd/the dance grrm just goes *wild* with it #oh see also alyn as a second son who helped *end* the war (and larys and tyland too!) but hotd's got a while to go before it gets there
