aang and sokka weren't in the wrong to worry about katara possibly spiraling into a self-destructive path in the southern raiders and they were sincerely trying to help her, but oh my god if I said "I'm going to find the man who took my mother from me" (ie after years I'm finally able to face the heaviest source of my grief) and the very first words out of someone's mouth in response were "ummmmm.... and what exactly do you think this will accomplish đ€šđŹđ„"???? she should've been meaner idc
#actually Sokka got a pretty wild line from Katara in response but Aang?? oh she had more grace than I would have#(also because I know how the girls like to tousle this isn't really an aang slander post or whatever this is MOSTLY a joke)#(but also not a joke cause out of everything you could've said why on earth would you LEAD with that???)#(katara's a saint for not throwing hands)#won't hard tag this because sincerely the atla fandom is more insane than pjo at times#but anyways where's that one post that's like /I stand with my canceled wife/#atla

out of focus
title: out of focus
word count: 3955
summary:Â
The actions of a Fire Nation admiral during a meeting causes some problems for Sokka. The words of that admiral causes some problems for Zuko. They try to take care of each other.Â
âWhat did the admiral mean,â Sokka blurts out without really thinking about it, âwhen he talked about insubordination?âÂ
Zuko freezes, the rag half-out of the bowl and his other hand still bracing Sokkaâs (not quite holding it⊠far too gentle to be holding it). âWhatâuh. I, uh.â Zuko stops. Takes a breath. Tries again. He still doesnât look up at Sokka. âWhen I was younger, I spoke out at a meeting.â
Warnings: burns (description of), violence, threats of violence, discussion of canonical child abuse, characters curse but no curse words are written, character is non-permanently injured, yelling/arguing, trauma
A/N: me? writing a zukka AtLA fic and posting it an hour short of midnight? Apparently, itâs more likely that youâd think.Â

Zuko has the patience of a saint, Sokka thinks to himself.
Itâs an unusual thought, he realizes. A year ago, if youâd told Sokka that heâd come to think of the Banished Prince as âpatientâ, heâd probably have thrown his boomerang at you. A year ago, Zuko was one of the most short-tempered people he knew. A year ago, Zuko was the face of the enemy.
A lot changes in a year.
Sokka barely stifles a frustrated sigh. The attempt does not seem to go unnoticed by Zuko, who glances at him quickly before the corner of his mouth twitches with something like amusement. The meeting had been going on for hours, and Sokka canât help but feel that very little progress on the treaty had been made. It wasnât for lack of trying, Sokka knows, but war leaves messy problems in its wake. He knows that both the literal and metaphorical shrapnel left behind by a century of conflict canât be swept away in a night or a week or a month.
It doesnât make these meetings any easier to sit through.
âI want immediate release of all prisoners of war,â an Earth Kingdom ambassador demands.
âI second that,â Sokka hears his father--sitting across the table from him--add, a bit more calmly but no less firm. âI have men in those prisons that havenât seen their family in a decade.â
âOf course,â Zuko replies at the same time a Fire Nation soldier snaps, âabsolutely not.â
Zuko levels a hard look at him. âAdmiral, people who were arrested as prisoners of war have no need to remain so after the war has ended.â He looks to Hakoda, then to the Earth Kingdom ambassador. âIâll draft that mandate tonight and will ensure itâs circulation as soon as possible.â
âThis is an outrage!â The slam of a fist against the table makes Sokkaâs hand fly to the boomerang strapped to his hip instinctively. The admiral is on his feet.
âAdmiral,â Zuko says, his voice steely as he rises from his own chair. The Fire Nation soldier cuts him off.
âWhere is the justice for the Fire Nation families whose sons and daughters were slaughtered by those criminals?â
âAdmiral--â
âI remember a time when you cared about Fire Nation soldiers! And itâs hard to believe youâve forgotten, seeing as you ought to be reminded every time you look in the mirror--â
âEnough!â Zuko snaps. âYou will watch your tongue or you will be escorted out. You approach insubordination.â
âYou are a child,â the admiral sneers. âThough one that ought to know a thing or two about insubordination, given your fatherâs attempts to brand you with a permanent reminder of its consequences--â
âWarriors!â
âThen again, he always was twice the leader you will never be. Long live the Phoenix King!â
Sokka sees the warning signsâthe slight shift of weight, the clench of the manâs fistsâand leaps to his feet. âZuko--!â
âSokka!â
Thereâs a blinding light and scorching heat. Sokka feels something slam onto his shoulder and he dives instinctively for cover as the familiar roar of a fireball explodes in front of him. The flames are bright and lick around him, and Sokka throws a hand up to protect his face. He blinks the spots from his vision as he yanks his boomerang out of his belt.
Zuko is standing beside him, his stance ready and his hand outstretched, having evidently dispelled the fireball that had been launched at him. Sokka leaps back up to his feet and hurls the boomerang in his hands towards the Admiral, hitting his hand right as he moves to launch another attack and forcing it to go wide. A burst of flames slam against the wall to the left.
The room is in chaos.
Sokka barely hears the shouts of alarm and curses over the roar of dying flames. He sees his father, already on his feet, diving underneath a bolt of red fire. Across the room, the Earth Kingdom ambassador jerks their hand. Thereâs a rumble in the ground before it rises and anchors around the Admiralâs feet, holding him in place.
Sokka sees the admiralâs gaze meet his own and narrow. The Fire Nation soldier bares his teeth in a snarl, his fist shooting out. Before Sokka can blink, Zuko steps in front of him, dispelling the flames just as the door ricochets open. Two Kyoshi Warriors flood in and in a series of quick strikes, the admiral drops. Awake, but limp.
Sokka thinks idly that heâs grateful that Ty Lee taught them how to block chi.
âYour father should have killed you that day!â the admiral shouts as heâs dragged through the doors. âHe showed mercy on your pathetic, worthlessââ the door slamming shut cuts him off.
The silence that follows makes Sokkaâs ears ring. He can still feel stale adrenaline coursing through him, his heartbeat pounding in his chest. For a moment, nobody moves. Zuko awkwardly clears his throat.
âApologies for the, uh, disruption. It shouldnât happen again.â
âIt wasnât your fault, Firelord Zuko,â Hakoda assures him, but thereâs something odd in his fatherâs expression when he looks at Zuko that Sokka doesnât understand.
Zuko says something in response, but Sokka doesnât catch it. As the adrenaline bleeds out of him, his muscles relaxing, Sokka realizes that his fists are still clenched. Sokka forces them to relax, and hisses as it sends a jolt of hot pain through his left hand. When he looks down, he realizes that the skin on the top of part of his hand near his knuckles is a blistering, angry red.
Sokkaâs hiss doesnât go unnoticed. Zuko looks at him over his shoulder, his brows drawn together in confusion before his eyes fall to Sokkaâs hand. Then, they go wide.
Zuko turns back around suddenly to address the room, his back straighter. âWe will adjourn the meeting for the afternoon. We will reconvene tomorrow.â
âFirelord Zukoââ an ambassador from the Northern Water Tribe protests, but Hakoda interrupts him.
âI think we could all use a breather, Kovrik. Coming back tomorrow with a clear head is a good decision.â
âYes⊠yes, I suppose thatâs fair.â
Sokka is finding it increasingly difficult to follow the conversation. His hand hurts, and itâs taking every last drop of his willpower and pride to grit his teeth and swallow back the whimper that wants to push up his throat. Itâs not until Zukoâs face is taking up his entire field of vision that Sokka realizes everyone but the two of them and his father have left the room.
âLet me see,â Zuko says quietly, then curses under his breath when he looks at Sokkaâs hand. âWhereâs Katara when you need her.â
âDo you have anything that can help?â Hakoda asks from behind Zuko.
âYes, sir,â Zuko replies, his brows still furrowed in concentration. âThough itâs not quite as immediate as waterbending healers. But it should help with the pain, and prevent infection. Follow me.â
Sokka feels Zuko take his elbow and guide him out the door of the meeting room and down the hall. Heâs distantly aware that Zuko is moving quicklyânot quite a jog, but only barely shy of itâthrough a network of corridors. His hand feels like it might still be on fire, and Sokka looks down at it again just to be sure thatâs not actually the case. He tells himself that heâs endured injuries more painful than this. The broken leg was worse, he thinks, though it does little to actually help with the burning sensation in his hand.
Heâs vaguely aware that Zuko says something quickly to two guards that are flanking a set of doors before he rushes in. Sokka looks up and realizes itâs Zukoâs chambers. Heâd only been in here a couple of times before, largely while Zuko was still recovering from Azulaâs lightning strike in the weeks following the end of the war.
âWait here,â Zuko tells him before disappearing through another door on the far side of the room.
âYou had good reflexes in there,â Sokka hears his fatherâs low, soothing voice speak up. Heâd had almost forgotten he was there. Hakoda moves the chair that had been beside the bed closer to Sokka in a clear direction to sit down.
âLots of practice,â Sokka replies as he sits. He hisses a little again as his hand flares and grits out a swear behind clenched teeth.
âEasy,â Hakoda says softly. He places a bracing, comforting hand between Sokkaâs shoulder blades. Itâs grounding, and heâs grateful.
âWish Katara was here,â Sokka tells him, echoing Zukoâs comment from earlier.
âI know. Unfortunately, I donât think sheâs coming to Caldera for a while. Sheâs still in Ba Sing Se with Aang.â
âYeah, yeah, I know. Her magic water comes in handy though.â Sokka gives his father a tight smile. âGet it? Hand-y?â
Hakoda snorts just as the door opens again. Zuko has his arms full of a large bowl, his hands fisting a few vials and some bandages. Thereâs something pinched about Zukoâs expression, and the way he doesnât meet Sokkaâs eyes as he kneels in front of him feels odd. The bowl is full of water, Sokka realizes, as he sets it on the ground and begins to empty the vials into it.
âCan I see your hand?â Zuko asks, and the questionâfor some reasonâcatches him off guard.
Sokka blinks. âYeah. Sure.â He grimaces as he places his hand in Zukoâs, but the excessive gentleness surprises him so much that Sokka almost forgets that his hand hurts.
Zuko was many things, but Sokka canât remember a timeâeven after he started to get along with the Fire Princeâthat he would have described Zuko as gentle. But his grip on Sokkaâs hand is careful. Almost excessively so. Â
Zuko hums in the back of his throat as he inspects the burns. âI donât think itâll have permanent damage,â he says quietly. âBut I still need to treat it so it doesnât get infected. It⊠might hurt, a little. But then it should feel better.â
âNo permanent damage. Thatâs good,â Sokka says. He swallows, and nods. âOkay.â
For a long moment, the only sounds that fills the room is the quiet splash of water in the bowl as Zuko submerges the cloth rag again and wrings it out. Sokka lets his gaze float around the room.
Zuko has left it mostly bare. Thereâs a portrait of Iroh and a woman that Sokka remembers being the Fire LadyâZukoâs motherâhanging on the wall near the headboard of the bed. On the dresser beside it is a drawing that Sokka did of the group of them months ago. He sees a pile of papers on the desk across the room. He thinks one of them has Aangâs signature at the bottom, but itâs too far away for him to know for sure.
Bright, painful heat searing his hand slams his attention back to Zuko in front of him and Sokka yelps, yanking his hand away. Zuko grimaces, retracing his own hand.
âIâm sorry,â he says, sounding more earnest than Sokka expects. âThis part is painful, but itâll stop hurting in a minute.â
Sokka fights to pull his breathing back under his control. In through his nose, out through his mouth. âRight,â he manages, his voice tight. âRight, sorry.â
âDonât be. I know it hurts.â
Something about that lineâand about the fact that Zuko still hasnât met his eyes since returning from the other roomâdrags Sokkaâs thoughts back to the conversation in the treaty meeting. There were several things that the admiral had said to Zuko that Sokka didnât quite understand. He could only remember pieces of things said, but they repeat in Sokkaâs head like disjointed pieces of a puzzle that he canât quite make fit together.
seeing as you ought to be reminded every time you look in the mirror⊠insubordination⊠your fatherâs attempts to brand you⊠consequencesâŠ
Sokkaâs gaze falls back to Zuko, dutifully bowed in front of him. There had long been pieces about Zuko that Sokka had found puzzling. Things about him that didnât quite fit together. Sokka considers himself a person pretty good at figuring out how things worked together, and that extended (with less success) to figuring out how parts of people make up the sum of their whole.
Zuko, though⊠Zuko had always been something of a mystery. But as the words of the admiral ricochet in his mind, thereâs a picture beginning to come together that is still just a little too hazy, a little too out of focus, to fill in the spaces that Sokka felt were missing.
âWhat did the admiral mean,â Sokka blurts out without really thinking about it, âwhen he talked about insubordination?â
Sokkaâs brow furrows as Zuko presses the rag to the back of his hand again. Sokka realizes that his hand has stopped hurting, but heâs too preoccupied with what Zuko said to pay it much mind. âAfter the stuff at Ba Sing Se? When you went home?â
âNo, I, uh.â Zuko clears his throat. âBefore that. Before⊠yeah. Earlier.â
Your fatherâs attempts to brand youâŠ
âWhat happened?â Sokka asks. The way Zukoâs shoulders seem to tense doesnât escape his attention, and thereâs a part of him that wonders if perhaps he shouldnât have asked. But it also feels like a question that once asked, is too late to take back.
Zuko pats Sokkaâs hand dry with another towel and begins to gingerly wrap a bandage around it. He keeps his gold gaze steady on the work. Sokka keeps his gaze steady on Zuko.
âMy uncle allowed me to attend a war meeting where they were talking about some battle strategies to use against an Earth Kingdom battalion. There was a general that wanted our newest fleet to serve as a distraction while we mounted an attack from the rear,â Zuko begins. Thereâs something off about his voice, though. Something detached and careful. He keeps wrapping the bandage. Around and around and around.
Sokka frowns. âThatâs not fair,â he says. âYour newest recruits? Theyâd be slaughtered by an experienced battalion like that.â
Zuko sighs, his lips pressing into a thin line. âExactly,â he says in a low voice. âAnd thatâs what I told them. I wasnât thinking. I just⊠yelled at him.â Sokka opens his mouth to disagreeâit sounds like Zuko was thinking, unlike anybody else at that meetingâbut Zuko cuts him off as he secures the end of the bandage to Sokkaâs palm. âMy father didnât⊠take it well. I was challenged to an Agni Kai, and I thought I would be facing the general in it, so I accepted.â
Zuko gathers the bowl and empty vials as he stands, crossing the room to set them on the edge of his desk. Sokka stands up slowly as Zuko does so. The pieces that had been out of focus for so long are starting to come together, and Sokka feels his stomach rolling with a leaden weight against what he can sense is coming.
âNoâŠâ
âIt wasnât the general,â Zuko continues, his voice so quiet that Sokka is sure he would have missed it if it hadnât been dead silence around them. âIt was my father.â
âYou faced your father in an Agni Kai?â
âNot exactly. IâŠâ Zuko stares down into the bowl of water beside him, his gaze distant. âI couldnât fight my own father. Instead, I begged him for forgiveness. I was met with a fistful of flames.â
Zuko gestures vaguely at his face, and Sokkaâs blood turns to ice.
âHeâŠâ Sokkaâs throat closes, cutting off the rest of that sentence. All this time being chased by Zukoâall this time being friends with himâand heâd always assumed that the scar was the result of a training accident, or a fight with a firebender he lost. Sokka thinks bitterly and viciously that the second assumption wasnât far off but his own fatherâ
âI was banished after that,â Zuko says, and his voice is hollow and empty and wrong. And he finally, finally, meets Sokkaâs gaze. âI was told to bring the Avatar back and all would be forgiven, or to not come back at all. That was before you and your sister woke Aang up from the iceberg.â
Sokka stands very, very still. He glances down and realizes his hands are trembling. He curls the non-bandaged one into a fist to get the shaking to stop. âHow old were you?â he asks, and he doesnât know whyâof everything he could sayâthatâs the question that tumbles past his lips, but he feels like it matters.
âThirteen.â
âThirââ Sokka cuts himself off, scrubbing a hand across his mouth and swallowing hard. âThirteen. Tui and La, when I was thirteenââ
Sokka breaks off again, his throat closing, his gaze falling to his father. When Sokka was thirteen, his father had left to go fight in the war and told Sokka he couldnât come along. Heâd protected Sokka, and though Sokka had found his way into fighting in the war regardless a few years later, he knows his father had only been trying to keep him safe. The idea of his own father striking himâlet alone with a fist full of flames to his faceâwas incomprehensible.
Hakoda doesnât look back at Sokka. His gaze is trained on Zuko, and thereâs something in his eyes that Sokka doesnât quite understand. But heâs seen it before. It was the same look Hakoda wears when he hears other water tribe soldiers recount war stories. The late-night ones. The ones where their voices betray the weight on their shoulders and tremble with the generations of nightmares on their backs.
Sokka takes a sudden, faltering step forward, and Zuko instinctively tenses. Sokka freezes. âZukoâŠâ
Zuko shakes his head. He coughs a little, as if trying to clear his throat. âAnyway. Thatâsâthatâs what the admiral was talking about.â
âYouâŠâ Sokka tries again, his voice carrying just the barest hints of hysteria. âYou were his kid.â
âYeah, well.â Zukoâs gaze meets Sokkaâs again. âHe spent most of my life wishing I wasnât.â
âZuko,â Hakoda speaks up, his voice a low, soothing rumble to Sokkaâs trembling nerves. âI⊠hope you understand that you didnât deserve that.â
âI know, sir,â he replies, sounding steadier than Sokka feels. Sokka feels a little like the ground has shifted beneath his feet as he stares at his friend across the room. Zuko continues, frustratingly calm. âIt⊠I didnât at first. It took me a long time to understand that it was wrong of my father to do that. But I know now.â
âWhere is he?â Sokka demands, flushing with a sudden and intense fury.
Zuko blinks, looking taken aback by the vehemence charged through Sokkaâs voice like a steel rod. âWhereâs who?â
âOzai.â
âSokka, what are you gonna do? Fight him? He already lost.â
âAgainst Aang, not againstâdid Aang even know?â
Zukoâs brow furrows and he rubs the back of his neck. âUm. I guess I donât know. I never told him. I⊠never told any of you.â
âYeahâand whatâs that about, huh?â Sokka demands. âWhy didnât you tell us?â
âSokka,â Hakoda warns, but Sokkaâs words are already bubbling up throat and spilling past his lips, hot and bitter and angry.
âWhat, did you think we wouldnât care? That it wouldnât matter?â
âIt doesnât matter!â Zuko waves a hand towards the window that overlooks the courtyard. âMy father already lost to the Avatar, Sokka. The war is over. The fighting is over. Aang took his bending. And thatâI donât know about you, but thatâs the best, most justified end to his legacy I can think of.â
Sokka is still shaking. He canât explain why. He knows, logically, that Zuko is right. Heâs right. But Sokka can still feel his hands shaking, can still feel his heart hammering in his ribs with the urge to run something through with sword, can still feel the way his eyes sting with tears he wonât let fall. Sokka clenches his jaw and rips his gaze away from Zuko out towards the window, where he can see the sun setting on the horizon and painting the palace courtyard in an orange light.
âWherever he is, I hope he rots,â Sokka says finally, and yet it still doesnât feel like enough. âHe deserves worse.â
Sokka looks back at Zuko, whose gaze is a little wide. He looks⊠taken aback. Sokka cocks an eyebrow.
âDonât tell me you disagreeâ"
âNo,â Zuko replies, shaking his head. âI just⊠Nothing.â The corner of his mouth tugs upwards in the barest hint of a smile. Sokka doesnât understand why, just like he doesnât understand why it uncoils the tight knot of burning anger in his chest.
Sokka takes a deep breath. Wills himself to relax. It helps⊠a little. Thereâs a beat, and then Sokka hears his father take a step forward. âThank you for helping Sokkaâs hand, Firelord Zuko.â
Zuko blinks, and Sokka swears his cheeks take a faint pink tint as he rubs the back of his neck. âOh. Uh, of course, sir. And⊠just Zuko is fine.â
Sokka glances over and sees Hakoda smile, inclining his head. âUnderstood.â He looks to Sokka. âI should draft a letter to Bato tonight to update him on the treaty. Will you be okay without me?â
Sokka rolls his eyes teasingly. âYeah, dad. I think I can manage.â
Hakoda squeezes his shoulder, nods to Zuko again, and quietly slips out of the room. The silence afterward seems to stretch, and Sokka feels the lingering tension bleeding out of him as he looks at Zuko, who quietly shuffles through the papers on his desk. Sokka watches him for a beat, his gaze lingering a little on the scarred tissue across his face. Sokka swallows.
There are other questions Sokka thinks he could ask. Like whyâafter doing thatâZuko was still so bent on returning home to his father. But thereâs a part of Sokka that thinks he maybe understands.
Spirits know that he understood what it was like to crave the approval of your father.
âHey,â he says, and Zukoâs gaze snaps over to him. âI⊠thank you for telling me. I⊠know that wasnât easy, and⊠it means a lot that you trust me with that.â
âIt⊠it wasnât a question of trust, you know,â Zuko replies quietly, averting his gaze. âNot telling you, I mean. It was justââ
âI know,â Sokka says, and means it. âBut I also know what itâs like to have things you donât necessarily⊠want to relive. So it means a lot that you told me.â
The corner of Zukoâs mouth twitches again. He takes a deep, slow breath. âThank you for listening,â he says.
âI like to think Iâm a pretty good listener,â Sokka teases, shrugging.
âYou are,â Zuko says, with far more sincerity than Sokka felt was warranted for what heâd meant to be a joke. Sokka blinks at him, and Zuko clears his throat, ducking his head a little. âI was thinking of getting some tea. Thereâs a place just outside the palace. Itâs not as good as Uncleâs, but um. Did you want to come?â
âYeah,â Sokka replies with a small smile. âI could use a cup of tea.â Â

Consider the idea of Lin /Bumi badly timed proposals"? (just a humble linumi shipper loving your fanfics)
Note: Here's my belated response to this prompt. It ran away from me again until I struggled to close the story out. Hope you like it!
One-shot Post-canon AU Lin x Bumi II
Also on AO3.Â
---
Outside of the military, Bumi was known to be the spontaneous one. The Avatarâs child who was the most likely to get into trouble. Or get into an adventure, as his grinning father would correct. He was the kid who took quickly to throwing fruit pies to the air acolytes. He was the teen who travelled to the next city because there was a Pro-bending competition happening there. As an adult, he was also the one who tried (and succeeded in) applying for the United Forces on a whim.
It was not often that Bumi would plan for anything linked to his personal life.
This was why, on the weeks leading up to that Night (with a capital N), he felt out of his depth. He did what he did best and tried to plan as he would regarding a military campaign.
This was why he thought he was assured of success.
What he did not count on was the extraneous factors, which was their extended family and social circle.
That â and the weather.
---
âBooms -Iâm sorry, itâs not going to work out.â Irohâs voice crackled over the telephone. âThat downpour wouldnât make anything stick long enough to be legible.â
Bumi sighed as he peered at the window of Tenzinâs study. The waves did crash unpleasantly against the edge of Air Temple Island as the rain fell. âWell, we can still move it tomorrow, right? You and the boys are still free?â
âOf course, provided that the weather is better. As for our availability - ,â Whatever Iroh said was lost as the line crackled again as it was wont to do when the weather was poor. Bumi clicked his tongue. Tenzin really needed to have some repairs made in this temple. â- So after that, we can definitely pick it up for you.â
âGreat!â Bumi could care less if they need to adjust the timing a bit â as long as it pushesthrough.
He did not need the details.
---
Or maybe, he should have probed for more details.
The retired commander saw that now as he watched visitors mill around Air Temple Island.
Various air acolytes and airbenders from the different temples now crowd the usually empty courtyard.
How was he to know that it was time for the anniversary of the return of the airbenders? He did not even know there was an identified datefor that.
Or maybe, he would have known had he listened to Tenzinâs lectures.
He scratched his chin, pensively, wondering if this might change anything when something cold and wet lashed at his behind.
âHello, Bumi.â His sister walked over, a water whip formed at her side, grinning as she usually did.
âMother said you shouldnât hit people.â
âMother said a lot of things that you didnât follow.â Kya crossed her arms mockingly. She nodded to the entrance of the residential building where their mother stood, surrounded by her youngest grandchildren.
He understood. They never could begrudge their mother anything, especially now with her waning health.
A sea of green passed in the periphery.
âI see Suyin and her brood are here.â Bumi contemplated briefly if it would have any impact to his plans.
Kya commented. âDid they really have to be always in green?â
âDid you always have to be in blue?â
âTouche.â Kya shrugged. âThough, I needed to be blue to occasionally camouflage in the South Pole if I needed to be stealthy.â
âFor what?â
From afar, they see Katara beckoning Kya forward from where she and Pema stood by the stoop of the house. âIâll go get settled now.â
Bumi excused himself, citing some reason to check on something, which, technically he needed to do.
âTenzin said nothing formal; nothing big. Just a small gathering.â The loud voice of the Avatar grumbled.
The clinking of metal was heard next before Bumi rounded the corner. âAnd yet, everyone is here.â
âChief Beifong!â
âAvatar.â Lin inclined her head in greeting, with blank politeness on her face.
Bumi knew better though â the slight tightening of her jaw and the grip she had on her belt: oh, Lin was irritated.
âWhatâs up?â Korra toyed with the sleeves of her formal wear, obviously uncomfortable.
âHow are your travels?â Bumi interjected, popping beside Lin before she manages any acerbic remark.
âWe are travelling in style! I think I could get used to it.â
âI think you already are.â Asami looked on with amusement.
âYouâre lucky,â Bumi pointed towards where Oogi and the younger bison were flying around. âDad had to travel on a sky bison.â
âMom said it wasnât pleasant.â Lin wrinkled her nose.
âThere! You! Are!â Bolin ran and huffed as he arrived before them, doubling over in the effort. âWing and Wei just found where the food was being prepared, we can sneak off to get some before theâ oh hello Chief Beifong!â
âI did not hear anything.â Lin looked skyward and waved her hand at them.
âBeifong!â Bumi quickly caught up with Lin, who strode off quickly when the teenagers started talking about food. âAre you on duty?â
âYes.â Lin sighed, putting her hand on her hips then stomping, doing a seismic perimeter check. âI know, but I have to.â
âIâll look for you later.â
âAlright. Weâre a bit stretched â Tenzin did not give us the correct numbers of attendees, as usual.â Her forehead crinkled as she concentrated on the perimeter check. âGood thing the Fire Lord sent General Iroh and some of his men to represent their nation.â
âOh, thatâs what he meant.â Bumi murmured to himself.
Lin glanced at him in askance.
âIroh.â Bumi did not want to expound further. Lin had a way of ferreting out the truth from him without seismic sense anyway.
Bumi accompanied her like a silent sentinel as Chief Beifong went about doing check to her team and on the island.
They have finally arrived at the main courtyard where the usually unflappable master airbender was fluttering about like a bright orange butterfly, holding several sheets of paper, which no doubt was the program for the day.
Lin groaned when Tenzin noticed them.
âLin!â
âI better go ahead.â With one final eye-rolling, Lin left Bumiâs side before he could even ask where she will be stationed at the end of the program.
âTrouble in paradise?â
Bumi jumped a bit, startled by Kya once again. âOf course not, my meddling gossipy sister.â
She offered him a drink, which he rightly declined. âWhatâs Tenzin up to?â
The man was now talking rapidly to the chief of police. They were far enough not to hear them but near enough to see what was going on.
âHeâs quite excitable.â The retired military man shrugged. âThank the spirits for Pema, that woman is a saint.â
âYou mean, thank the spirits for Lin,â Kya nodded towards the pair as she took a sip of her drink. âPema was just about ready to rip her hair off these past days. She was looking quite frazzled earlier and after a drink or two, bam! Out tumbled everything - Tenzin was anxious and has been driving her nuts with all the prep for todayâs celebration.â She raised a glass to the earthbender and airbender on the main event area. âBut look over there â just a few words from our dear Chief of Police and the man calms down.â
Bumi could not help but tense up as he observed Lin and Tenzin on the platform.
As Lin continued to converse with his younger brother, Tenzin began to slowly deflate. A smile started to form on the earlier stressed airbenderâs face and the corner of Linâs lips upturned, a ghost of a smile.
âI swear â those two, I wonder how it would have turned out for them had they known this was going to happen anywayâŠâ Kya trails off, as though suddenly realizing who she was talking to. âI mean â hey, theyâre both in happy relationships and itâs perfect and -.â
Bumi swallowed drily, drowning out his sisterâs voice.
He had thought about that occasionally, really. There was nothing to go on and Lin had been upfront about, well, everything so he knew where her heart is.
But, looking at the pair now, at the anniversary of the return of the airbenders, supposedly the pinnacle of all their argumentsâŠ
âBooms â donât do anything stupid.â
Now that snapped him from his maudlin thoughts. âWhy is it that everyone thinks Iâm gonna do something stupid when I keep quiet? Itâs a bit offensive, you know.â
âBumi, I didnât mean -.â
No matter, Bumi was adamant that his Plan pushes through.
---
âPOP! POP! BOOOM! BOOOM POP! Whiiiizzz! BOOM!â
Everyone on Air Temple Island (and even those at the edge of Republic City) looked up to see fireworks littering the night sky.
âBEIFONG⊠WILLâŠYOU⊠ohmy sweet - is that a ring??? .. ME.â Suyin squealed as she read what the fireworks were spelling out.
There was a cacophony from the courtyard of Air Temple Island as everyone sought to find which Beifong was being proposed to.
From their perches around the island, Iroh and the UF men whooped in success of their mission tonight â deploying the firework proposal.
âOH-MY-BOLIIIIN!â
All eyes were on Opal who was clutching at a wide-eyed earthbender.
âWhat?!â
Various voices added to the din, shouting different things.
âBolin did you really?!â Mako pointed up to the sky.
âWhat â no I did not. Iâm not marrying â I mean,â Bolin swiftly turned to Opal. âI would like to marry you.â Then he shouted at Su and Baatar Seniorâs direction. âBut not now. One day but not now â I mean, I need to talk to Su and Baat â oh shit Suâs gonna kill me.â
Attention turned to Baatar and Suyin.
âUm no,â Baatar shrugged casually, an arm around his wife. âItâs not our anniversary anytime soon.â
Suyin was still being antsy. âWing! Wei! Did any of you -?â She saw her twins wave up their arms in surrender, wildly shaking their heads as they each held a plate of food. âIf thatâs not youâŠâ
âKuvira and Junior â.â Wei.
âThat is unlikely.â Wing.
âHuan?â Both Wing and Wei asked, everyoneâs heads swiveled to the artistic Beifong.
âExcuse me.â Huan looked very offended, as though it was an insult that someone would be proposing to him in public.
Bumiâs face fell as the Beifongs present began arguing as to who the firework proposal was for and the actual Beifong who the proposal was meant for was nowhere to be seen.
Just then a soft squeal and a sniffle came from Kyaâs side.
Pema was holding to her arm. âNo-no-no â itâs for Lin, donât you see? Thatâs why â Tenzin is leaving me.â Every other word was punctuated with a sniffle. âThatâs why theyâve been talking over plans and thatâs why â I saw them talk to Jinora the other day. Oh-airbenders-Tenzin is -leaaving me.â
âAhem, I have an announcement!â
Now, everyone turned to stare back at the platform where Tenzin stood. Behind him, stood two more people - Lin Beifong stood in his shadows, arms crossed, a guard observing the proceedings, while Jinora stood to the side with a nervous smile, hands at her back.
âOoohhhh!â Pema let out a wail.
âShh, Pema!â
Bumi froze. There have been still some lingering insecurities that were in relation to his brother that would take a long time to tamp down. With the manâs whimpering wife at the side and his own significant other beside said man, it did not take much to wear Bumi down to his insecurities.
âThis has been a long time coming and before anything else,â Tenzin paused at this to throw a significant look at his back. âI would like to say that this is no split second decision, weâve talked about it and well â.â
No way he was going to let Tenzin take over his plan tonight.
âI will be stepping down soon with Jinora as my successor.â
âLinBeifong, will you marry me?â
Two voices rang into the night, clearly silencing any other words that might have been going on.
Bumi did not care for or did not mind what the reactions of the people around them were. He only had eyes for the earthbender who was gaping at him then looking back at the sky then back at him.
He worried the longer it took for Lin to react.
From his side, Pema sagged in relief against her sister-in-law while Jinora and Tenzin stood at the platform, greeting well-wishers.
Lin, meanwhile, was yet to do anything other than stand still.
âOH â we forgot the most eligible Beifong of today!â Bolin stated the obvious, pointing to the sky and back at Chief Beifong on the stage.
âWhat are you doing, go get her.â Kya nudged him from the back.
Bumi ran to the stage, almost tripping on his formal robes. âLin â Iâm so sorry â I didnât think it would be this public â I -.â Lin hated public displays. âI ainât doing this to pressure, I -.â
Lin gripped his arm to stop him from speaking.
The crowd went silent as Suyin could be heard shushing everyone (âQuiet! We need to hear what her answer is!â).
Bumiâs heart sank as Lin pulled away from him.
This is it. The Rejection.
He could only look to the ground, unwilling to face family, friends and even his former colleagues in the UF.
Suddenly there was a rumble on the ground as Lin extended a leg in front of her and she raised her arms slowly with a grunt.
âYES â BUMI â I â WILL â dear Agni â Liiiin is marrying Bumi!â Suâs shrill voice read out the words etched on the courtyard.
Tenzin groaned, mumbling about the destruction of his courtyard.
âShut it, airhead. That courtyard has seen worse when you broke up with -.â
Nope, he did not want to hear about their break-up and so Bumi took Lin in his arms and planted a nice long kiss to seal the deal.
He pulled back and was met with a large grin on Linâs face.
It might not have worked as he expected or planned it to be but at least, he could honestly say that it was -
Mission accomplished.

Sorry for your wait, anon! I hope you like what I wrote for you <3
Fake It Till You Make It
Sokka x Reader - FakeDating!Trope
Needless to say, Y/N was slightly shocked by Sokkaâs proposition.
By the age of sixteen, they had been crucial pai sho tiles in the gambit against the once Fire Lord Ozai. Returning home was odd for many reasons, but notably the reminders that they were still children really, or at least in the eyes of their families. It was Zuko who had suggested a gang trip â a joint life changing field trip â after the nations settled down from Ozaiâs defeat.
The first to return home was Y/N. Her mother lived in Fire Fountain City. It was only a short journey away from the capital, and Hakoda had already travelled to see his children at the palace. Sure, she had joked about pushing off her motherâs insistent affection, but she definitely cried a little bit when she got to hug her mum, and even more when her brothers piled on too. Ever the monarchist, Zuko was welcomed into the house with open arms and plenty of celebration. Toph especially got on with her family, rough-housing with Y/Nâs brothers like it was nothing.
Since Toph didnât want to see her parents as of yet, the only family member left to visit was Sokka and Kataraâs Gran Gran since Sukiâs family were doing work in the Fire Nation anyway. It took some convincing for Toph to put on snow boots â âIâll risk frostbite if it means seeing, Katara!â â but soon they were travelling all the way to the South Pole. It was on their stop at Kyoshi Island that Sokka had approached Y/N.
âI need you to pretend to be my girlfriend.â
Y/N barked out an incredulous laugh. âTui and La, what?â
âExactly what I said,â Sokka nodded, face solemn. âKatara wrote to Gran Gran a couple of times and mentioned Yue and Suki, but you know how that ended.â
âOne turned into the moon and the other is a raging Sapphic in a relationship with Ty Lee.â
âExactly!â He looked distressed, throwing his hands in the air. âAnd Gran Gran sent a letter back saying how excited she was to meet my girlfriend!â
Frowning in confusion, Y/N looked at him. âYou could just tell her what happened.â
âBut, Y/N, she was so excited!â He simpered the way a child would, and Y/N couldnât help but laugh. âObviously, weâre just friends, but would you do this?â
Ouch. Sure, they were âjust friendsâ, but it hurt anyway. Maybe it was the terseness with how he said it, or the fact that since the war had ended all Y/N could think about is how pretty Sokka looked when he could finally relax. Whatever it was, it stung in her chest, panging with the intensity of heartburn. Heartburn seemed a fitting enough description regardless of its denotation.
So that was how she ended up fake dating Sokka, all for the sake of his ego and his gran granâs happiness. As they travelled over the ocean on Appaâs back, he was as physically far from her as he could possibly be. Ouch, again. For a fake boyfriend, he was doing a crappy job at it. Staring daggers at the back of his head, Y/N sulked quite contently next to Zuko, who seemed to be comfortable with her mood â something about being friends with far grumpier girls. That had made her laugh.
Her laugh had made Sokka stare.
The sharpness to her gaze melted almost immediately when she saw the concern etched on his face. Instead, she beamed at him. Sokka grinned back, turning away to continue his conversation with Suki.
Y/N could feel Zukoâs gaze on her. âI swear to the spirits, Zuko, if you say thatâs rough, buddy, Iâll chi block you.â
The crown prince was kind enough to stifle his laughter, though it seemed contagious. Her frown shifted into a small smile and she took to staring over the edge of Appaâs saddle at the canvas of blue beneath them. There was something tranquil about the polar water, the great water beasts breaching the waves only to dive back down into the impossible depths. Being from the Fire Nation, Y/N had never experienced such wonder in a single image â nor such freezing weather. Pulling furs over herself, she readied herself for what would happen on the ice.
Gran Gran looked to be the loveliest but scariest woman she would ever meet. The woman stood as the leader of the tribe; a gaggle of children stood behind her in uncertainty. However, as soon as Sokka hopped off Appaâs back, they were screaming and charging past her to tackle him to the ground. Her heart warmed as they hugged him and cried, shouting at him for leaving them without a warrior in the village.
âWhat are you seal pups on about?â He snorted, trying to avoid being winded by tiny elbows. âI trained you better than this.â
âThatâs enough of that.â
At the womanâs words, the children picked themselves up, leaving Sokka in the snow. He didnât last long though as he and Katara took their turn in charging. Embracing their grandmother with the tightest hug Y/N had ever seen, she left them to their moment, opting to instead help Toph down from their trusty steed.
âI hate this,â Toph muttered, holding both Zuko and Y/Nâs arms in her own death grip.
âI know,â Y/N said softly, âBut youâll be able to take those boots off once we get inside one of the igloos.â
âAnd this must be Y/N.â
With wide eyes, she pried herself from Toph, trusting Zuko to make sure she didnât cause any avalanches. Stepping to Sokkaâs side, Y/N tried not to startle as he wrapped his arm around her hip. âSokka, let me meet your grandmother before you steal me away!â
She felt smug satisfaction at how he flushed.
âLet me look at you, dear,â The matriarch ordered, though not unkindly. Presenting herself in the woman, she brushed off the scrutinous stare with a smile. âYouâre very beautiful.â
âThank you, erm- â
âPlease,â She beamed, and all Y/N could see was the saccharine threat that Katara often fronted, âCall me Gran Gran.â
As the woman turned away, she swatted Sokkaâs arm, meeting his gaze with a scowl. Stalking past him through the snow â which was harder than she had assumed â Y/N was followed by a curious flock of children tugging on her sleeves. Patient as a saint, she laughed with them, answering all of their burning questions.
Why is your hair like that? Why are your clothes red? Is that the same scary man who attacked our village? But he doesnât look scary. Why is Sokka smiling at you?
Whipping her head around, Y/N met Sokkaâs eyes. He was grinning like a dope, chin rested on his palm as Katara talked Gran Granâs ear off. Somehow, he hadnât realised that she had caught him staring, but the children soon fixed that; a snowball to the face promptly brought him out of his stupor. Had he hit his head on the way down from Appa? Whatever it was, it made her heart hurt and she had promised Toph a warm igloo anyway.
The sun was beginning to set behind the glaciated mountains on the horizon, illuminating the village in the evening light, dappling the ice with sunspots. She had never seen something so beautiful before, but as the sun disappeared, so did the warmth; the igloo more than made up for it.
As she sat with Zuko, Suki, and Toph â Sokka and Katara obviously busy whilst Aang promised the children some airbending games â Y/N grumbled to herself. Not only was she playing fake girlfriend, but fake girlfriend who was hated by the family. Well, it probably wasnât hate. She wouldnât blame Gran Gran for being protective over one of her two grandchildren. In fact, thinking of how her brothers reacted to Sokka, maybe she had it good.
Laid flat on her back, she listened to the gossip of the Fire Nation, of how Ty Lee was doing, and how Toph was seeing some weird stuff under the ice. Whatever it was, it couldnât spike her interest enough to join in the conversation.
âY/N?âShe barely turned her head to see an anxious looking Sokka in the doorway.Â
âYes?â
He looked around the room at all the faces and fidgeted. âAbout earlier- â
âListen, I donât care, okay, Sokka?â She said, trying her hardest to not seem entirely mean, nor upset; Toph scoffed, muttering something that sounded like liar.
âJust,â He sighed, âCan we talk outside?â
Pulling furs back over herself, she looked pleadingly at her friends to rescue her, but to no avail. Trudging after Sokka, she was growing more and more vexed as they moved further from the village and into the cold. The moon began to rise in the sky, glossing the ice with an ethereal glow, which was perhaps the only nice part about being out in the bitter cold.
âWhat, Sokka?â Y/N finally huffed, putting her foot down. âAm I not being a convincing enough girlfriend for you?â
âItâs not that Y/N,â Sokka started, waving his hands in a panicked motion as if warning off a polar dog.
âThen what?â She interrupted, not having any of it. âDid you want me to hold your hand? Maybe give you a cuddle?â
He flinched at the venom in her tone. âNo, Y/N, if youâd just- â
âJust what?â Y/N snapped. âWhat you asked of me what really inconsiderate,Â
Sokka, but I did it anyway because I'm your friend â just your friend.â
âSpirits, Y/N,â He sighed, realisation passing behind his eyes.
âBut itâs fine! Iâm a great actress, Sokka, because I wouldnât be acting. See? I can hold your hand, hug you, even kiss you if you needed it, but it hurts me.â
Looking down at the ice, Sokka kicked some snow under his boot, looking very ashamed of himself for a second. It pierced through her anger in a way that was unfair. Instead of dealing a final blow, all she could think to do was grab his hand and comfort him. Yes, she still felt she was in the right, but Y/N didnât want one of her closest friends to suffer at her hand, retribution or no.
âGran Gran shouted at me, yâknow,â Sokka said, a small smile quirking at his lips as his eyes fell on his hand in hers.
Y/N frowned. âWhy?â
âFor thinking she was a âdumb old ladyâ apparently,â He chuckled, meeting her eyes. âIt seemed Aang had let slip that we werenât actually dating, so she told me off for that.â
âYou deserved that,â She grin, bumping his shoulder.
âAnd then she called me dumb, which I didnât appreciate.â
His smile said otherwise, so Y/N pushed. âWhat did you do now?â
âTry to fake something I actually wanted.â
Shocked, Y/N dropped his hand, and for a moment his heart fell heavy in his chest. This was the perfect chance to be with her, he thought, now that the war was over and she knew her family was safe. Now they had autonomy, surely they could focus on each other.
âY/N, Iâm so- â
His apology was cut off by an insistent pair of lips, begging him to be quiet and just enjoy their moment. Deepening the kiss, she looped her arms around the back of his neck, the scruff of his unshaven hair brushing against her arms. His heart was soaring, hers no longer burning but glowing. She pulled back and reaching up to his face, Y/N felt the warmth of his cheek in the bitter cold, radiating warmer than the sun. Whatever light had been taken by the night was captured in them.
âGran Gran likes you by the way,â Sokka said quietly, leaning his forehead against hers. âSays you wrangle those kids better than I do.â
âPraise Agni,â Y/N gasped, letting out a bated breath she hadnât realised was stuck. âShe does the same scary face Katara does.â
Sokka chucked, rubbing his nose against hers. âDonât you worry, Y/N. Me and Dad are just as scared by it.â
With a giggle, she rested her head in the crook of his neck, basking in their embrace for as long as she could.
