here's a chunk from august, 1992:
The wind has adopted a bite, laced a chill into its gusts, but Eddie sheds his coat, tossing it in a familiarly thoughtless heap on the ground. He rolls up his sleeves, one at a time, imprecise, absent. There’s flock of bats where Steve’s work once was. One of many pieces of ink that now adorn Eddie’s skin. All in black. A lot cleaner and a thousand times better, admittedly, than Steve’s amateur doodle. “I still play, though,” Eddie says, yanking him back to the present. “Write a bit here and there too. There’s this, uh, little dive bar in town. Not a huge metal scene, but I grace ‘em with a taste of my unbridled talent every once in a while.” Steve scoffs, but it comes out smothered in the same fondness that stains his smile; he wipes it off on his shoulder.  “Jesus, good to know your ego’s still intact.” The last remnants of the sun are long gone now, but Eddie’s eyes shimmer with a light all their own. “Not just intact, baby. Inflated. Beyond belief.” Baby. The name dumps a heap of sugar into his blood, stirs a jolt into his heart. His chest pulls tight, the same way it had the first time Eddie let that little word drop from his lips, tucked away under the stars, barely a breath and almost lost in the breeze. He still remembers the smell of the ocean that night; it hung so heavy in the air, stuck in every corner of his lungs, the scent of the unknown, discovery, and the deepest shade of blue before black.
