I’ve always enjoyed this opening because it’s a masterclass on reversing expectations (a hallmark of the book itself) and establishing voice. “No possibility”—this is phrased as an unfortunate thing (lack of possibility usually is, and Jane’s own lack of possibility is a constant theme). Yet in the next paragraph, the defiant "I" shows up our expectations. “I was glad” “I never liked long walks.” We learn about Jane through her opinions and her physicality, two of her distinguishing features that, though considered socially unacceptable, are what make her heroic.

Bobby grabbed at a bubble that barely evaded his grasp, leaning away from Roier not in struggle this time but determination to catch the shiny new things drifting past his face. Jaiden grinned and unscrewed the wand again, leaning in to blow more bubbles towards him.

"What was that all about?"

"What do you mean?" Jaiden glanced out and tipped her head at Roier's question.

"You know, all that." He gestured vaguely in the direction that Cucurucho had left in with one of his free arms. "Since when does Cucurucho give people gifts? I want gifts. What did you do to be his favourite?" 

Roier's tone was light but there was a sharper undertone to his words. Jaiden shrugged and turned away, screwing the lid back onto the bubbles and slipping them into her pocket too.
