Hawkins’ home island of Augur sits near the bottom of the North Blue, fairly close to the Calm Belt. The land itself is mostly a desert but there are a few oasises where villages thrive and the main city sits at the bottom of a mountain, which provides fresh water from the rivers that run down it as well as underground springs. Horses are highly valued, usually more than people, and their main exports are sandstone, gems that are washed down the mountain, and medicinal herbs.
It’s an extremely traditional place, to the point of being repressive. It has a strict caste system, with forehead or facial tattoos being an easy way to tell one’s position upon coming of age. Most importantly, they have very firm beliefs regarding the roles of men and women and shows of emotions. Men were meant to be both strong and shrewd regardless of whether they were a merchant or a warrior. Women were taught to be beautiful but thoughtless – even higher-caste women were seldom educated beyond the basics. Both sexes were taught to never show their true emotions visibly. Men were brought up to be stoic while women hid true feelings behind vapid smiles. Even pain and sorrow were seen as disgraceful to express, with men shunned if they cry out in pain and women shamed if they cry. It makes people emotional powder kegs, just waiting to explode.
#akagamiko#Sleight of Hand (Asks)#Divination (Headcanons)#Sands of Fate (Augur)#(Oda tells me this man is Egyptian so you'd better believe I'm taking the opportunity to make him from a desert country)#(but Augur is definitely based off of a mix of various countries and cultures)#(also this ask could not have been timed more perfectly because I've been thinking a lot about where Hawkins would have come from)#(and the culture certainly explains a thing or two about why his is the way he is)
