Does anyone know of any coat styles that come close to Mr. What's-His-Face's coat accounting for all its weird details?
Tumblr media
These are the details I'm sure the coat has:
VERY broad notch lapels & collar. (This is probably the least optional design feature—his collar is large enough to hide his face and that's important to the story.)
cutaway coat (the way the bottom of the coat curves from his waist down around his hips to the tails)
green plaid fabric. It looks like some kind of check, like a gingham or buffalo check, but it could be a more complicated plaid that's just being drawn like a check for simplicity
turnback cuff
single vent in the tail
Here's some details that might be there, but might just be drawn that way to simplify for a cartoon style even though it doesn't "really" look like that:
appears to only be fastened by one button
probably single-breasted (cartoony styles usually take the trouble to illustrate buttons on double-breasted coats)
it might have a solid-colored lining, but maybe they just didn't draw the plaid on the inside to make the design clearer.
no visible belt or half belt, no visible pockets, no visible epaulets
there's a line drawn down his back that might just indicate his spine but might be a single pleat. no other visible pleats.
(On top of the above, he has spats, a derby hat, gloves, and a carpet bag, which all implies late 19th-century fashion. I personally headcanon him as immortal, so he may well have lived in Gravity Falls since it was founded and has been running around in the same coat for over a century.)
Now here's my problem.
That huge huge collar? I'm only finding collars like that on outerwear designed for serious weather. Stuff like peacoats, trench coats, ulster coats, greatcoats.

Meanwhile, I'm only finding that cutaway tail style on morning coats and a few tuxedos.
Tumblr media
the top half of him is dressed like a soldier in the trenches bracing for a winter storm and the bottom half of him is dressed like a millionaire meeting with some gentlemen to buy an oil well.
Does anybody happen to know of any coat styles that account for this mishmash he's wearing?
Disclaimer: I acknowledge that his coat was probably designed by an artist whose priority was "make something that looks visually appealing" with no interest in whether such a garment exists in real life. My question isn't "is this real or not," it's "what real thing comes closest to it."
