Arthur Morgan x Reader: Silver Lighter
Ask: you’re literally the sweetest! so yesterday when i got really sad i smoked and the song “attention” by joji came on and i got this idea that a modern day reader get somehow you know transported to their world and she builds a really strong relationship with arthur like they really trust each other but she knows she can’t stay with them forever so one time when she’s having a cigarette together she asks him “would you hate me if i said goodbye” like in the song and she gives him her silver lighter as a goodbye gift? she explains how it works and stuff and arthur is just mesmerized by it? probably sounds kinda dumb but i thought if you wrote it, it would probably be just perfect
Warning: Cursing, angst.
Pairing: Arthur Morgan x Reader
A/N: This is definitely one of the most unique asks I’ve gotten besides one other in my inbox now. It was kind of hard to write, I feel like most of it was just filler for the ending. I hope I explained how the reader got there good enough, I’m not good at sci-fi and I didn’t want to confuse anyone too much so I left it pretty vague. The science man Arthur talks about is Marko Dragic, in case you didn’t pick it up. I know he probably couldn’t do anything as advanced as time travel but HEY we gotta have options here. The ‘someone I love’ that gave you the lighter can be one of your family members or friends. And if you have no friends just make one up. Cheers!
One day you were sipping tea while watching television. The next day you were somehow in the middle of nowhere sleeping on dirt. You had no idea what happened or where you were. The first thing that came to mind was kidnapping, maybe you were kidnapped and drugged? Or maybe you had gotten super drunk and didn’t remember what happened that night.
Either way, you had nothing to help you. No cellphone, no map. The only thing around you that meant civilization was a dirt road. You had walked that for a few hours but once the sun went down you figured you should get sleep while you could.
“You shouldn’t be out here.”
Your heart lurched and you jumped to your feet, hopeful someone had sent out a search party and this was your hero.
When you got a good look at the man you began to think otherwise. He was on a fucking horse, dressed like a cowboy. He even had guns. Lots of them. You took a step back and glanced around to determine your best chance at escape if things got sour.
“You alright?” He asked in that extreme accent and quirked a brow. He was looking at you as if you were the crazy one.
“Where am I?” You asked, noticing he had been staring at your clothes as if they were absurd. You were wearing a pair of jean shorts with a sweater and some boots, what was the issue?
The man looked even more confused than before. “Few miles away from Blackwater. What you doin’ out here anyway?”
“Blackwater? Is that near (Your hometown)?”
“I don’t know where that is, ma’am.”
“Great. Could you just take me to the nearest town? I need to get home.”
“Course.” He offered you his hand and you climbed awkwardly up his horse. “You mind if I smoke?” He asked as you settled behind him.
“No, of course not. I need one myself.” You laughed and took the lit cigarette he had handed you. You’d never seen that brand before. It looked vintage.
The ride to town was fine, it was when you got there that things started to fall apart. The whole wild wild west theme was starting to freak you out. When you got into the actual stores was when you passed out.
***
Arthur had been kind enough to take you back to camp and get you somewhere safe to sleep for the night. Dutch made it clear that he didn’t like strangers but Arthur couldn’t care less. You slept straight through the night and almost the whole next day.
Now, I’m gonna cut this short, because honestly, it’s quite embarrassing. It took you a whole two days to figure out you weren’t in 2019 anymore. You had somehow found yourself in the 1800s, taken in by a gang of outlaws. And it took you another week to actually come to terms with it. A few members of the gang thought you were crazy. Not because of your situation, you kept that to yourself. If you told anyone that you were from the future you’d definitely be kicked out of camp. They thought you were crazy because you didn’t know jack shit about some of their items. Some of the guns were complicated as hell. You made occasional references to things that hadn’t happened yet. You’d say words that didn’t exist and make jokes that just weren’t funny.
Arthur, on the other hand, wow. That man was so sweet on you. He’d taken you out hunting, fishing, shopping and everything else you needed. He taught you how to shoot the more complicated guns, taught you how to use a bow and arrow, and how to skin animals properly. If it weren’t for Arthur you’d most certainly be dead.
You didn’t know why he was so kind to you. You weren’t anything special, not like Sadie. She seemed more like his type. Independent, strong-willed, Sadie knew her stuff. She didn’t constantly need help doing simple things. But you did. So what did he find so interesting in you?
The following months were tough. You continued falling deeper in love with Arthur, but you knew you eventually had to find a way back home. You had started asking around for any kind of schools or scholars.
“Well, I met this smart feller in Saint Denis. Was driving around robotic boats. Why?” Arthur asked as the two of you had your nightly smoke.
You ashed and took another drag. “Could you take me to see him? I just have some questions I need answering.”
Arthur nodded as he took a drag. “Yeah, course I can. When you wanna go?” You exhaled your smoke and shrugged. “Whenever. Could we go in the morning?” You doubted that man would be able to help you at all, but it didn’t hurt to try. You had friends and family you needed to get back to.
“Sure thing. What’re your questions? Nothing I can answer, I’m sure.” He joked and you playfully hit his shoulder.
“Stop with that. You’re not stupid, Arthur.” You scoffed and he just laughed. “You’re too hard on yourself sometimes. You’re not stupid, you’re not ugly, you won’t break a camera. I know they’re ‘just jokes’,” You used your fingers to do quotes. “But joking like that too much will manifest into something you don’t want it to.”
“I guess you’re right.” He sighed with a small smirk, ashing his cigarette.
“I am right. You’re the kindest, sweetest, most handsome man I’ve ever met.” You leaned against him and he planted a kiss on the top of your head.
Right then you felt your heart drop. If the man he talked of could help you get back home, you were going to have to leave Arthur. You doubted he’d want to come with you. His loyalty to his friends was much too strong.
Could you leave Arthur and live the rest of your life? You certainly couldn’t stay there, that wasn’t an option. You HAD to find a way to get back home, even if it took your entire life. You just hoped it wouldn’t hurt too much.
Deep down you knew it would.
You took a deep drag from your cigarette and flicked the butt into the campfire. “Arthur, would you hate me if I said goodbye?” You asked and felt him shift against you.
For a minute he didn’t answer. In his mind, he already knew what you meant. He wasn’t stupid. He knew you didn’t belong here, it was obvious. Maybe you were from another country, all he knew was this wasn’t where you were supposed to be.
“You gotta do what you gotta do, girl.” His voice was softer then, it was obvious he was saddened by the thought. It made you want to cry.
You sniffed and sat up straight, running a hand through your hair. “I just want you to know I love you, alright?” That was the first time you said it, but that didn’t phase Arthur one bit.
“I love you too, darlin’.” He said without any hesitation.
***
He could do it. His name was Marko and he said he could help you. Of course the two of you kept your true intentions a secret from Arthur, you made up a lie about geography and needing to travel somewhere very far away.
Marko only needed a few days to prepare everything and then you would be gone. In those few days, you spent every second with Arthur. You made love, got drunk, and slept under the stars in the open lavender fields. You’d never felt more alive than with him.
When the day finally came for you to leave you had one last smoke with Arthur.
“I’d invite you to come with me, but I know you can’t.” You said as you smoked. “You’ve got too much responsibility and loyalty to run off with me.”
Arthur nodded, knowing you were right. “Maybe I can come and visit you one day. Or you me.”
Tears welled up in your eyes when he said that. It wasn’t true. You’d never see him again. You shakily inhaled and looked away from him to hide your tears. “Maybe.”
You were quiet for a while. Once you were done with your cigarette you pulled out another, trying to delay your departure.
“You really gotta go?”
That broke you. You burst into tears and dropped your cigarette, your hands flying to cover your face. Arthur pulled you into a tight hug and you sobbed into his chest. From the way he was moving you guessed he was trying to hold in his tears.
“Yes, I have to, I’m sorry, Arthur, I didn’t expect this to happen.” You sobbed as he rubbed your back. “I didn’t expect any of this to happen, it wasn’t supposed to happen, I-”
“It’s alright, girl.” He muttered and kissed the top of your head. “Like I said. You gotta do what you gotta do.” It took you a while to stop crying. The whole time Arthur held you and kept kissing your head, telling you everything would be all right.
Before you finally left you slipped your lighter into his palm. It was the only thing you had brought with you besides your clothes, but they had been exchanged for more appropriate attire.
He looked down and furrowed his brows in confusion. “What’s this?”
“It’s a lighter. It lights cigarettes and stuff.” You sniffed and took it from his open palm to show him how it worked. “Watch.” You flipped open the top and drug your thumb along the ridge, sparking a flame. That blew Arthur away.
“What in the…?” He muttered and squinted, taking the lighter back from you. The flame went out and he did the same thing you did. It took him a few tries but when he finally managed to light it he was just as surprised as when you did it. “Where’d you get this?”
“Back home. Someone I love gave it to me.”
Arthur lit the lighter a few more times, completely mesmerized by it. “What’s zippo?”
You laughed at the way he pronounced it and wiped the tears off your face. “It’s just the brand. I’ve got to go now, Arthur.”
He slipped the lighter in his satchel and looked back to you. “Alright… be safe, ya’ hear? Don’t be gettin’ into no trouble.”
“I promise.” You smiled and held back the tears.
“You got that picture of us? And my drawings?” He had given you dozens of drawings in the months you’d known him, all of them of you or something related to you. And the pictures he took with his own camera. He had one and you had one. The two of you were kissing in the photo, standing in those lavender fields.
“Of course I do.” You gave the satchel on your hip a pat. “You think I’d forget those?” When he chuckled you felt your heart break even more. “Alright… I guess this is goodbye.”
Arthur nodded and you could tell he was trying his hardest not to cry. You thanked him for that, because if you saw him cry you’d never be able to leave. “Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe I’ll see you again.”
You pulled him into another hug. He felt so warm against you, his broad body was so comforting and familiar. He felt like your second home. When you parted from the hug you kissed him for the thousandth time that day.
“Goddamnit woman. Believe me when I say this. I’ll never love again.”
“Don’t make me cry again.” You sniffed and gave him another kiss on the cheek. “I can say the same. I will never love anyone the way I love you, Arthur. And I’ll keep loving you, till the day I die.”
Arthur kissed your lips again and you felt him shudder. “I love you, (Y/N).”
“I love you too, Arthur.”
