Guys, i know. I just got back. But so here's the thing: my lease is up the end of this month, as some of you are aware. So I am actually in the process of buying a house! Unfortunately, work is also a nightmare at the moment, I am Stressed from needing to find a new place and get a mortgage (this is Scary Adulting and I Do Not Like), and my mom is recovering from shoulder surgery, so I jsut have a LOT going on, and will be here VERY sporadically until I can get everything situated. many horrors occurred with me and my bestie @/z0mbieb0yx3 at galaxycon columbus from december 2-4 2022. the first thing to go wrong was me throwing up in his car at like 9am and looking back i consider it an omen

to answer your questions specifically:

did people buy your stuff?

no they didn't. i sold a grand total of $50 worth of stock. on saturday, which is supposed to be peak operating hours, i sold a grand total of 5 items and that just kinda made my resolve shatter. i remember crying about it on the drive back home, as well as panicking during day 3 about what my father would think of me after such a catastrophic and horrendous failure since he is both Business Man (man who knows everything about business) and expects perfection from me. my mom on the other hand was very understanding and kind when i turned up at our house at 11pm with bloodshot eyes and dried tears on my face so uh shoutout my momma yo

were they weird as shit?

most people were very nice fortunately! never once did i feel unsafe at the con. there was one guy who came up to our table that kinda skeeved me out but that's the most of it really. a lot of Autism (affectionate) was on display at da con which is always appreciated and i got to link up with some artists that i'm cool with now ^^

we were WOEFULLY unprepared. we didn't have enough variety in stock to make our booth look full AND we had no display equipment (stands, tablecloth, bins, etc.). our shit (respectfully) looked budget as fuck we were not big ballers

this was not helped by the layout of the exhibition hall being absolute doodoo garbage. you had to go WAY out of your way to even find the artist alley which was in the far back left corner of the room, you couldn't even see it from the entrance because of the 10 foot high Premium Vendor booths. there was NO signage directing you towards the alley or even saying you arrived at it so w/o a map you just had to stumble into it. right behind the alley was the bafflingly small food court (a subway, jet's pizza and chick-fil-a stand lined up next to each other) which didn't bring in any traffic from what i could gather

our booth was right next to this very nice couple who would check in with us occasionally and we learned thru them that everybody in the alley was getting no fucking sales! gee i wonder if the poor layout had anything to do with it. it's not a small convention by any means, which made the fumbles all the more shocking. they told us to not beat ourselves up over low sales which was really nice to hear and genuinely reassuring :] day 3 was basically everybody trading stock with each other since they knew it was absolutely and unequivocally joever

some of the horrors were my fault though. that weekend was the first time i drank a monster energy and i (a dumbass) thought it would be so awesome and so cool to drink it on an empty stomach. immediately i felt the repercussions and thought i was having my Jokar Moment until wingding suggested i eat some fucking pizza and suddenly i was like yeah this is fine i'm good now. who woulda thunk it. i did it again the next day and the same thing happened because i never learn. i also tried edibles for the first time on this Very Professional Business Trip and i instantly got scared. oops

hi! i haven't been on here in a hot minute! lots has happened since i actually posted instead of reblogged so if anyone is interested in a bit of a ramble stick around, otherwise, here's a cool pic i took in no man's sky yesterday 🙌 getting back into my star wars rot so playing this and republic commando is gonna be my personality for the foreseeable future

anyway! if you're still here, awesome thanks i'm literally just gonna ramble a bit!! lots has happened in the past year for me and honestly, i'm so tired. graduated university with a 2:1 theatre degree (finished last june but grad was last october) and had to say goodbye to all my uni friends which sucked. i live in buckfuck nowhere so i don't often get to see people because trains are super expensive :((( i got really stuck job searching for months, there's not a lot going on in my area and i don't have a car (or a full licence) so it makes thinks more difficult when most jobs are out of your walking/public transport range and/or not something you're trained in.

eventually i got a job at my local cake shop as front of house staff, which was great while it lasted, but they owe us 2 months of wages and made most of front of house redundant,,,, and then they went into liquidation, so they owe me a lot of money which i have no clue if i'll ever see. it's honestly super draining mentally!! i had so many plans and budgets going and it all went straight down the drain so i'm back to step 1 again :////

currently i'm prepping for another london trip this sunday (i'm an associate artist for my friends theatre company which is cool!) to do photography for our queer cabaret evening. that at least is a stable gig as i'm the official photographer, but it doesn't pay well (doesn't come close to covering my train tickets), which is to be expected of small time theatre, but it's still frustrating when it's all you've really got and it happens every couple of months.

on a brighter note, my mum and i are going to london next weekend to see spirited away in the theatre!! super excited for that as it's my favourite ghibli movie (and my first! had it on dvd since I was 5) and we're making a weekend out of it. we'll get in on friday, check into our hotel and peruse a museum or two, then saturday we have the performance followed by a reservation in a sushi restaurant (bougie for us, but mum insisted we have a treat since we never go out), and then back home on sunday :)

so yeah it's been really stressful this past year, and i feel very stuck both mentally and physically. i still live with my mum, which is fine because i love her, but i really would love my own place so i can actually fully relax and be independent. my room is also tiny and we ended up having to get me a high sleeper so my desk could fit, and the novelty wore off quick because i'm a tall almost 23 year old having to cram myself up into this bed made for 6 year olds, and i hit my head regularly on the ceiling 😭 all in all i feel drained and stuck, and the hopes i had of moving to brighton to live by myself or with friends has basically flown into the sunset. now we might be talking about moving elsewhere entirely, but i won't go into that as nothing is certain and i'm tired of false hope and promises.

This is another story and it's very interesting it has to do with her castle and a lot of people did not figure it out and her son did and he looked and there's a parking garage in the right and an old building on the left and he says it's not really yours and she said I ruled it and it's part of mine and he says that's true and she got a little happier and said most of them were built by Giants who might not be here so she got a little happier and said although they might be here somewhere else and he said oh yeah and it's very true thanks so it's been doing like that this afternoon and that's what they do in the weekends and they I'm doing a little bit more this weekend probably but I kind of scatterbrains and they have a lot of work to do and they don't seem to want to do it and they don't really understand the world that much it's held together by people who care and they seem to have a place to go to though and projects to do and a lot of them are leaving to do that but very good idea there's a lot of work to do today and we have to catch up the stuff but this is extremely important and saying that the Capitol building might be the max is interesting and Howard said no then you said you better check and stuff like that so something's make sense and our son said it they want to move the house out and put it where it was and rule over USA where they we're ruling from in other words they were not necessarily ruling from the DC and for Virginia it was from those houses then again those houses could be in the capital both of them and it might be a message from Dave and Carol saying that's where they're running it from more than that or both we think it's both and that is Hera and Zeus the last paragraph and it's accurate

Living in Park Slope, Brooklyn

We lived in Park Slope for ~18 months and really enjoyed the neighborhood for its peaceful, quiet vibes. Unlike other places we've lived in NYC, the streets are typically uncrowded and quiet with rarely any shouting outside our home and minimal honking from cars, and people generally seem less rushed. The close proximity to Prospect Park - designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, like Central Park - was definitely a perk, as was having relatively easy access to Manhattan via the subway. We also liked how large, affordable, and relatively not crowded our gym was.

On the flip side, the commute time to Manhattan was long (45 mins at best to midtown, but best to budget an hour for delays), and with longer subway wait times on weekends, we often stayed in the neighborhood vs. venturing into "the city." Most of the housing stock is very old brownstones (ours is from the 1890s), which comes with maintenance issues, lack of elevators, and some level of decrepitude (this was a HUGE problem in the duplex we rented, which had constant maintenance issues and vermin and a very checked-out landlady). And the vegetarian food options are rather depressing -- the neighborhood is overflowing with pasta/pizza joints (yay carbs, but no veg protein), sugary dessert shops, a seemingly disproportionate amount of non-A grade restaurants (per the NYC food safety rating system), and generally mediocre tasting food.

Our time in the neighborhood was split across a 1-bedroom sublet (4th floor walkup for ~3 months) and a 2-bedroom duplex brownstone (garden & parlor levels for ~15 months). Both were based in "South Slope", the even quieter subsection of the neighborhood that is slightly deeper into Brooklyn than "North Slope" (which is more central and closer to express train lines to Manhattan such as the Q and 2/3).

Our Favorite (Vegetarian) Food

While the healthy vegetarian options were not plentiful and a lot of the restaurants are aggressively mediocre compared to Manhattan fare, there were still some places we really enjoyed eating in the neighborhood. These were some of our favorite sit-down spots in/near South Slope, with the caveat that none of them had great veg protein so we only at there as exceptions to our regular routine:

Lore - One of the most upscale places in the neighborhood, and known for its Indian fusion and other "culturally diverse" dishes. For us, this was the best Indian food in the neighborhood (not that there was much competition) and generally really delicious. A reservation is typically needed for dinner, but walk-ins seem possible for brunch/lunch. Closed Mondays.

Pasta Louise - While I generally avoid pasta places for dinner given the heavy carb/low vegetarian protein ratio and tendency towards mediocrity, Pasta Louise's food is actually delicious. We loved the farro salad and many of the vegetarian pastas. The vibe is also very friendly and wholesome, and there are often families with kids. Wait times are generally long if you don't have a reservation.

Haenyo - Korean food. There's only one vegetarian entree - the tofu bibimbap - but it's excellent! Good to make a reservation here, though we were able to walk in on a weekend for dinner once (with a ~20 min wait).

Crosta - More Italian food. While there's no vegetarian protein to be found here, I enjoyed everything I tried, especially the vegetarian lasagna and also the salad and pizzas.

Krupa Grocery - Also in Windsor Terrace, the fake (vegetarian) chicken dish and gnocchi are pretty tasty here. This restaurant doesn't hold a candle to our favorites in Manhattan, but for days that we didn't want to leave the neighborhood, it was a good option for us. We really liked the cute backyard full of picnic tables and string lights.

Bonus: We didn't often venture into North Slope, but we did really enjoyed eating at Fausto there. Not a lot of vegetarian protein but the food was delicious.

We sometimes found better vegetarian protein options at the fast casual places in the neighborhood, including our favorites:

Two Boots - This is the best vegan pizza we know. We love the V for Vegan slice. It's not high in protein, but a delicious treat. Park Slope lifers probably hate it because it's a chain, but hey, it's good! For another pizza place, Norm's Pizza was also pretty good (though not vegan) - I liked their signature vodka sauce pizza.

Taim - Also a chain, and a great spot for make-your-own Mediterranean bowls. Better than Cava, in my opinion (not that there's a Cava in the neighborhood). The falafel comes with some protein and you can also add boiled eggs for some more.

Just Salad - Another chain. Because sadly Park Slope doesn't have many healthy vegetarian options that aren't chains. The salads here are actually quite delicious and you can add tofu to any of them, so this is obviously a winner for us.

Electric Beets - Small business with a bunch of all-vegetarian (vegan?) takeaway foods such as burritos with tofu, vegetarian lasagna, noodles, etc. The food was generally pretty good and we really liked that they had vegetarian protein in several dishes. The owner is also very friendly.

Hanco's - Vietnamese food. The tofu banh me is pretty good, as are the glass noodles with tofu. Think they also do have a few locations in NYC, though I don't really think of it as a chain.

Syko - Syrian/Korean fusion in neighboring Windsor Terrace. Featured in The New Yorker while we lived in the area. We liked the Fatboy, a massive scallion pancake sandwich that left us both with a food hangover after sharing one between us. Unfortunately, we didn't see this on the menu recently.

Sandwich Girl Cafe - We liked the breakfast burrito. Not the best breakfast burrito we've ever had, but definitely the best we've had in Park Slope.

Candidly, there were lots of places we tried in the neighborhood that were very disappointing in terms of the food taste. These included places that people love to love, like Miriam (Mediterranean food) and Masalawala (very spicy Indian food), and places that we'd never heard of but popped in to try. There were some places that were decent but not great, especially relative to their high prices, like Couleur Cafe. And there were places where the menus looked so unappealing for vegetarians that we never bothered to try them. So once we discovered the places we liked, we largely stuck to them.

Cafes, Bakeries, Dessert

Park Slope has tons and tons of cafes, bakeries, and dessert shops. It makes for a more European vibe. Some of my favorites were Culture (for frozen yogurt in the summertime, and yes it's a chain), Variety Coffee Roasters (good chai latte, has quite a lot of seating although often full, and you guessed it...a chain), Muse Cafe (mediocre food/drink tbh, but plenty of seating and always seemed to have seats available), and Techne Cafe (delicious croissants and drinks). The area is also known for Winner, a bakery that releases specific types of breads/baked goods at certain hours throughout the day (and attracts long lines for them). Given I'm not big on carbs this wasn't a favorite for me, and their challah was pretty mediocre, but people love to love Winner. There are many, many more cafes and bakeries in the neighborhood and I'm sure lots of them have tasty treats.

Notably, it was hard to find a decent bagel in the area, although Bagel Pub (...a chain) was generally pretty good. Ironically, we like Brooklyn Bagel, which is located in NoHo (Manhattan), better than anything we tried in Park Slope.

Things to Do

This is the kind of neighborhood that is a great place to live in relative peace. It's less about attractions or things to do in the way that Manhattan, or even some other neighborhoods of Brooklyn, are. I nodded and said I was glad it was working for them. We’ll discuss the article on Monday, and I’ll teach my way forward through history from there. 

In APGOV we segued from state politics to town politics with some articles about recent issues in Belknap County (the Gunstock closure last summer) and Croydon (the school budget fight last year), and then I asked them to identify some of the issues in their towns. They talked about housing, STRs, and school tuition contracts (our sending towns might not all renew them), but admitted they hadn’t heard about much else. So I know what I’ll be doing next week.

We didn’t have track practice this afternoon- a rest day before our last invitational- but the other AP teachers and I did have a quick meeting with The Head of School Counseling. She wanted to thank us, and let us know communication was going home to students’ parents about the fact that the year’s not over (some of our seniors have been dismissing themselves) even though the tests are done. We joked about how we’d hoped for bonus checks, wished each other a good weekend, and headed out.

Post 5: Nice & Monaco

This week we made the spontaneous decision to buy a 40 Euro flight to Nice, France. This was my first flight on a low budget airline, and I was nervous because I have heard horror stories about how strict their carry on bag policy is and how they make you pay a ridiculous amount of money to place it overhead. We flew with Easy Jet, and they were so kind and helpful and did not even check out bags at all! It was also my first time staying in a hostel, and it was a great experience! We stayed at Hostel Ozz, had our own private room with two quadrouple bunk beds, it was walking distance from everything, and it was only 19 Euros a night! Our stomachs began to growl and we decided to find a crepe place nearby - something that Nice is known for.  Me and Mary Ashton split a sweet banana toffee crepe and savory goat cheese, prosciutto, and honey crepe. It was delicious!

We then started to explore with the sole goal of getting to the top of Colline de Chateau - but with no directions. Every turn we took had colorful little houses and cafes. We eventually made it the top with an aerial view of Nice, it was breathtaking.

We then walked along the beach and ran into some of our friends from Barcelona!

For dinner, we made reservations at a Mediterranean Tapas retaurant called Bocca Nissa. The atmosphere was incredible and not to mention some of the best tapas ive had (even beats barcelona!). We ordered hummus, eggplant caviar, roasted cauliflower, focaccia bread, avocado tosada, and truffle ravioli. 

The following day, we took a 4 Euro scenic train ride to the rich country of Monaco! Here we lived out out Selena Gomez Monte Carlo moment, stared at the yachts in the port and pretended which one we were going to buy. We walked by the Monte Carlo Casino but decided not go inside because it was so expensive. 

We waltzed over to the beach where there was a line of extravagant luxury shops and the customers decked out in Louis Vuitton and Dior. We had reservations at (no lie) my favorite restaurant I have ever been to. Everything was perfect here; outside table, right on the beach, overlooking the water, perfect temperature, incredible pasta and pizza, superb drinks, and the ambiance was everything I could of asked for. It was called Giacomos and it was surprisingly pretty cheap for Monaco, we ordered a prosciutto pizza, truffle pasta, duck rigatoni, truffle burrata, focaccia bread, and the best aperol sprtiz ever! Our waiter was especially nice and told us stories of his hometown Bari, Italy and we have made a pack to try and visit it!

With our stomachs full we walked back to the train station and passed by the Monte Carlo race track. We then took the train back to Nice gathered up our stuff in preparation back to our home base of Barcelona. We had the whole Sunday to to some Barcelona exploring; me and Anne went to Fleadonia, a market that only happens on the first Sunday of every month. It was insanely busy with numerous unique stands and shops with a variety of items from leather jackets to vintage cameras. I bargained in Spanish for the first time ever and obtained an old gold watch for only 10 Euros! And Anne got an oversized black leather jacket for 15!

We finished the night by going to the Palo Market Festival, which was similar to Fleadonia except with all different kinds of foods. We ordered loaded Nachos, empanadas, and Suaderos. They were so authentic and delicious. The night was complete with a live band playing beautiful songs and music. This was an amazing weekend!!
