I still can't quite nail down a vibe for my rook during the game itself (something something inconsistent game writing) but as soon as I got the tidbit that LoF!rook was a galley slave before joining the lords my brain exploded into a complicated network of supposition and coincidence, which includes:

rook was a tevinter slave

rook ended up with the lords of fortune under isabela's leadership

fenris was hunting slaves post-DA2

fenris is friends with isabela

isabela fobbed rook off on varric pre-veilguard

isabela brings up merrill in front of rook

which obviously must lead me to the conclusion that fenris (and hawke) rescued rook from slavery some time after DA2 and rook knows* the whole kirkwall gang

*she's definitely met merrill and varric pre-veilguard; I don't think she's ever met aveline in person but she's heard so many stories that it's almost like meeting aveline

aiman visits isabela at some point post-inquisition when the weisshaupt stuff is cleared up and discovers that the stringy little bean of an elf that spent a year or two tagging along after her and fenris has.... well not exactly sprung up because she's still a stringy little bean of an elf ("fenris's influence," says isabela, and fenris doesn't bother arguing) but she's a mage now ("your influence," says isabela, even though aiman hasn't seen the kid in a couple years and she definitely wasn't slinging lightning last time) and a treasure hunter ("my influence," isabela says, proud) and all grown up! still a kid, definitely, but a grown-up kid!

except the kid is a little awkward around them for reasons that aiman can't quite figure out, which kind of puts a damper on seeing her again. then someone mentions "that hawke kid" in passing and aiman is affronted (she's not that immature and she's certainly not that young) until she realizes they're talking about mari

so later when they're both up late or in the same corner of some revel or whatever, aiman sidles up to mari and is like, "so hawke, hm?" and mari is like. ah. um. well. you see. I've always wanted a surname and I've never had one so I thought I might... borrow yours? if that's okay? I mean I can stop if you want it's just that you've been really important to me and I feel like when I met you I started a new life? but let me know if I'm overstepping?

and aiman "family trauma" hawke is like. oh yeah. yeah sure okay I mean if you want to? like you don't have to. haha. whatever you want! while on the inside she's like. oh no. I've adopted a child. how do I break this to fenris?

so she very tentatively brings it up to fenris like "hey what do you think that means? are we ready for this responsibility? do you think she actually wants to be connected to us? are you okay with this?"

to which fenris is like. yeah. I suggested it.
