Music Industry Stunts and why they happen

Stunts are a big part of the music industry, you may not know it, but they are.  The purpose of stunts is to push a certain narrative to the general public. Now this could mean many different things, PR relationship; coverups; or to peak the publics interest. Why? You may ask, why would the artist do this, why wouldn’t they just be truthful? Well, many don’t have a choice, the music industry is a place that I wish no one would have to be in, it is a cruel and awful place to be if you don’t know how to get around it, or if you don’t have the correct connections. In the past (and still now), many big brand music industries, such as Sony Music and Warner Music have controlled artists immensely.

George Michael

As a legend in the music industry, George Michael is a well-known name in the average household. From his time in the hit duo “Wham!”, Michael’s music was distributed through CBS, but in 1987 Sony took over and that’s when things went downhill. Michael reveled in the popularity of his hit album “Faith” in 1987, and so did Sony, because he was earning them money.

But that ended quickly with the news of his next album “Listen Without Prejudice” in 1990, Sony refused to promote the album and appear in the music videos for it. Michael in turn, disputed his contract with Sony, but he could not do close to anything, because Sony possessed the power of approval over everything that he put out. Meaning, George Michael could not release music without it going through the board of Sony, and if he did, he could get sued and fired.

During this whole time, George came clean, saying that the board of Sony, used many different homophobic slurs against him, and wouldn’t let him release any music that seemed to allude to the fact that he was gay.

George Michael brought Sony to court in 1993, claiming that between 1987-1992, he had made worldwide profits of £7.35 million ($9.8 million) compared to Sony making £52.45 million ($70 million). Ultimately, the case lasted till June 1994, and Michael had lost, the judge claiming that it was fair. Michael retaliated saying how Sony is “Professional Slavery”.

Suzanne Kessler, Entertainment attorney at Bone McAllester Norton and former in-house attorney at A&M Records and Universal Music Group stated, “There are two sides to this tale,” she said. “The music business is a relationship business, and he was uneasy with what was happening. A label often wants an artist to continue to trade on their established brand with the public. But after “Faith” Michael was trying for a new direction, to be taken more seriously as an artist instead of just as a pop star sex symbol.”

This brings me to my next point,

 Closeting in the Industry

(Now I could go on for day about closeting in the music industry, but I will only give you the basis and then I will link another post that goes further in depth.)

Closeting is not a rare thing in the music industry, it in fact happens more than you might think. Many different artists have come forward, saying how their management said they should remain closeted to the general public, in order to maintain the brand that has been established. A popular example of this would be Sam Smith, they were offered multiple times by their management to have a beard. More closeting in the industry comes from Colton Haynes, who has been open about how his management closeted him because he “could not be gay and work in the industry”.

 The Types of Stunts and Stunt Songs

“Pap Pics”

Stunts are common, we all should know that. From the amount of staged paparazzi pictures and videos that get posted to twitter on the daily it is not surprising that stunts happen. One of the main reasons stunts happen is for publicity, I can tell you now, living in LA for as long as I did, the paparazzi aren’t at every corner just waiting for a celebrity to walk past. They are called to meet at a place where the celebrity is going to be, in order to get pictures. This call is made by the artists management normally, and many times it is done against the artists will.

“Relation-shit”

These types of stunts are the relationship stunts, normally it is two popular celebrities dating to gain publicity for a movie or song that they are doing. A popular reference to this would be Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato, Joe was approached by a head of Disney, who asked him to date, at the time, co-star Demi Lovato. This stunt was to push the new Disney movie that both were starring in, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. Now at the time Demi was unaware that Joe was approached to do this, so when Joe and hid dad approached her about it… wow that must have hurt.

Another example of a relation-shit would be Shawmilla. Now before you attack me for this, let’s look at all the facts. Everything that relationship has done has been staged, let’s look at the timeline.

Senorita is a total stunt song to “prove” to the public that they are together.

Now this type of stunt gets its name from the queen of stunt songs herself, Ms. Taylor Swift. The notorious song Style, supposedly about “Ex” Harry Styles, is probably one of the most stunty stunt songs I have ever heard. Like come on! “James Dean Daydream look in your eyes” if you didn’t know, here is a short recap on the icon himself James Dean.

Taylor has time and time again written amazing songs, I would be lying if I did not call her one of the greatest lyricists on the 21st century, the woman can write extremely well. So why would she put a nod to James Dean, a famous actor, who was a closeted, RAGING bisexual in a song so clearly about Harry Styles? She knows what she is doing.

Talking more about the “Haylor” stunt, can we please end that? It was a 3-month PR stunt that happened 5 years ago, please just get over it, they never really dated. And to the hardcore Haylor fans, there is no chemistry between them.

A popular example of this would be, Machine Gun Kelley and Eminem, with their songs called “Rap Devil” and “Killshot”. Their “beef” was totally staged to boost views on both sides, its even more prominent because they have the same record label, INTERSCOPE.

He Had an R.V., a Camera and a Plan to Document America. Was That Enough? Andrew Callaghan, 23, built a following with his YouTube series “All Gas No Brakes.” This month, he announced that he’d left the show. Here’s what happened.

Since 2019, Andrew Callaghan, 23, has been crisscrossing the country in a beat-up R.V. with his two best friends, documenting the absurd, outrageous and infuriating aspects of American life.

“All Gas No Brakes,” his popular YouTube show, features dispatches from the road and conversations with Bigfoot hunters, protesters, porn stars, Proud Boys and lots of partyers, from Bourbon Street to Burning Man.

Through his reporting, Mr. Callaghan — 6-foot-3, with a mess of curly hair and a uniform of oversized taupe suits — has earned a following of 1.7 million on YouTube and thousands of paid supporters on Patreon.

But recently, fans have been wondering if his show is over. He hasn’t posted on YouTube since mid-November. The show’s social media accounts have been inactive for months. His podcast last released an episode on Jan. 15. “What is happening to All Gas No Brakes?” one fan commented below the show’s last Instagram post, in January.

On Tuesday, March 9, fans were met with a cryptic message posted to the “All Gas No Brakes” Instagram account. “Sorry for the lack of content … the team is still working on a secret project that we can announce soon,” the statement read. “In the meantime we’re officially taking the show international and we’re looking for correspondents from around the world.” Soon after, Mr. Callaghan issued a statement on his personal Instagram account.“I am no longer associated with All Gas No Brakes,” the statement read. “I no longer receive any of the Patreon crowdfunding, YouTube monetization, or any other income. My team, Nic and Evan, who lived in the R.V. and created the original material with me, are also no longer involved. We have no control over any AGNB pages or future of the show.”“I signed an employment contract without reading it,” Mr. Callaghan added. “Lesson learned.” Hitting the Road  Mr. Callaghan started “All Gas No Brakes” in the fall of 2019. He’d graduated that year from Loyola University New Orleans, where he’d been accepted on a full scholarship.

As a teenager in downtown Seattle, he’d covered the Occupy movement, Juggalos, the online black market known as Silk Road and Seattle’s rap scene for his student newspaper.

“He’s always surrounded himself with odd people and been really able to talk to very odd people and allow them to feel seen and comfortable in ways some of the oddest among us don’t always feel,” said Owen Borges, 24, a filmmaker and friend of Mr. Callaghan’s who briefly worked on “All Gas No Brakes.

”During his senior year of college, Mr. Callaghan filmed a series called “Quarter Confessions,” featuring interviews with inebriated people on Bourbon Street. The series earned him coverage in Loyola’s student newspaper.

“Wherever he went, a moderate crowd would follow, some for a chance in front of the camera, others just to watch the spectacle unfold,” a reporter for The Loyola Maroon wrote in 2019.

When he graduated, Mr. Callaghan knew he wanted to take his interviews on the road. The summer after his freshman year, he’d hitchhiked across America for 70 days, meeting all kinds of people. But to do that full time, he’d need money: for transportation, to hire a video team, and basic living costs.

Mr. Callaghan connected with Doing Things Media, a company founded in 2017 that had built a network of popular meme accounts, in the hopes of brokering a partnership.

The founders, Derek Lucas and Reid Hailey, monetized the accounts by producing branded content, selling merchandise and licensing videos. At the time, Doing Things was interested in making more original content. Mr. Hailey said he had seen Mr. Callaghan’s videos from New Orleans and felt that his work could be a fit for the brand.

“I was like, ‘Yo, if you guys buy me this R.V., I’ll make a sick show out of it and it’ll be a cultural exploration of America,’” Mr. Callaghan told Vice in a video from January. “That’s how it started: I convinced a company to buy me an R.V.” (He declined to comment for this article.)

In addition to the R.V., Doing Things offered Mr. Callaghan a salary of $45,000, plus additional money for equipment and production costs, and later, profit-sharing, according to people involved in the agreement. They hired two of Mr. Callaghan’s childhood best friends, Nic Mosher and Evan Gilbert-Katz, to help make the show. All Mr. Callaghan had to do was sign a contract. It was a no-brainer.

The group set off in the fall of 2019. Mr. Callaghan, always dressed in his signature suit, interviewed people at Burning Man, the Area 51 raid, a Flat Earth conference and a festival for furries (people who dress up as anthropomorphic animal characters for fun); the tone of the show was often humorous. As Mr. Callaghan’s audience grew, he started to get recognized at events.

Doing Things pushed the crew for higher output but continued to grant Mr. Callaghan creative control.

Political News or ‘Party Content’?

In late May, the crew traveled to Minneapolis to cover the protests after the killing of George Floyd. Mr. Callaghan felt that many news outlets, in focusing on looting and fires, hadn’t captured the anguish of the protesters.

“It wasn’t so much of me being like, ‘Let me get political because I want to get more of a liberal audience,’” Mr. Callaghan told Vice. “It was like, ‘Media is not covering this. The media is not talking to the people causing destruction in Minneapolis and figuring out why.’”

His followers relied on him to make sense of the events. “The Minneapolis video set the show to a completely different level,” said Nate Kahn, 24, a podcast producer and videographer in Los Angeles who worked on “All Gas No Brakes.” “It basically went from funny one-minute Instagram clickbait to an actual boots-on-the-ground news source.”

According to people who worked on the show, Mr. Hailey asked Mr. Callaghan to focus on “party content” rather than news. “Reid from Doing Things was constantly pressuring us to make the show less political,” said Mr. Kahn.

Still, “All Gas No Brakes” continued to cover current events: anti-lockdown protests, a Proud Boys rally and the protests against police brutality in Portland.

Mr. Callaghan, in partnership with Doing Things, also entered into a development deal with Abso Lutely Productions, helmed by the comedians Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, to turn the show into a longform project.

When shooting for that project began in October, Mr. Callaghan was still expected to produce content for Instagram and YouTube on the side, according to several people who worked on the show. Doing Things continued urging Mr. Callaghan to stick to humor, rather than news and politics.

“Andrew wanted to prioritize the things he cared about and was inspired by — the conditions of the pandemic, the end of the election cycle — rather than just crank out content for the purpose of being monetized by Doing Things Media,” said Lance Bangs, 48, a filmmaker and director in Portland, Ore., who worked on “All Gas No Brakes.”

Mr. Callaghan and his two best friends were parking the R.V. in Walmart lots and showering only when they could. “They were truly a three-person team making everything,” said Mr. Bangs.

Doing Things had started a Patreon for the show. Mr. Callaghan received 20 percent of the profits from the show and another 20 percent was split among other members of the show; Doing Things received the remaining 60 percent. (The company confirmed the figures.)

“It was a 360 deal where Doing Things owned everything Andrew did,” Mr. Kahn said. “They offered him a ‘promotion,’” he explained, but it included a six-month extension of his contract. Mr. Callaghan had also signed over the rights to the brand’s intellectual property and the name “All Gas No Brakes” to Doing Things.

‘This Is Not the End’

By the end of 2020, the relationship between “All Gas No Brakes” and Doing Things was strained. The crew wanted to produce independent journalism; and didn’t feel they could do that under the umbrella of Doing Things.

“We are always thinking about how to turn our social presence into a product,” Mr. Hailey told The Hustle in November of last year. “Can we make a game? Can we make a beverage?”

Mr. Callaghan’s image became commodified as merchandise. “I remember being in my house and seeing my best friend’s face on air fresheners, Hawaiian shirts and I.P.A. beer cans,” said Mr. Kahn. There were also action figures. Mr. Kahn said the pressure to produce content and the loss of control over the brand began to take a toll on his friend. “He was incredibly stressed,” Mr. Kahn said.

In mid-December, Mr. Callaghan asked for a larger portion of the Patreon earnings and to get out of his contract, which was set to expire in February 2022. A few days after the request, Doing Things locked Mr. Callaghan, Mr. Gilbert-Katz and Mr. Mosher out of the “All Gas No Brakes” social media profiles, citing a security issue.

“Andrew said this was a punishment for us not creating enough content for them and he wished he never signed the deal,” Mr. Kahn said.

In February, Doing Things sent a letter to Mr. Callaghan saying his job would be terminated if he didn’t produce two pieces of Patreon content by March 1. The company fired Mr. Gilbert-Katz and Mr. Mosher, and tried to get Mr. Callaghan to hand the show over to a new host. He refused, and on March 4, he was fired too.

“We’re really bummed it didn’t work out with Andrew,” Mr. Hailey, the C.E.O. of Doing Things, said in a statement. “He was the heart and soul of the show. It was a special moment in time and we’re excited we got to be a part of it. We wish him the absolute best and we’ll be watching along with everyone else for where he goes next.”

Mr. Callaghan is still working on the longform project with Abso Lutely and Doing Things. And he’s assured his fans there’s more to come.

“This is not the end,” he wrote on Instagram Stories last week. “It’s a new beginning to a truly independent and bright future for all of us. Stay tuned. Love y’all.”

The Next Big Adventure: Herrings Move to China

Let’s be honest, college is an adventure. A mass of young adults thrown together without parental supervision is bound to be. Thankfully the adventure doesn’t end after graduation. Adventures after college just take a different form, an adventure in “real life”. Which is a perfect way to describe Jared and Sovi Herring’s life after DSU. A life that is taking them across the world to China.

A few years ago, while the Herrings were thinking about moving out of North Dakota, they researched teaching abroad programs. Ultimately, they decided to stay, but little did they know that a few years later the opportunity to teach in a different country would circle back around. In July, Sovi was contacted again about teaching abroad and given a few different options: China, Pakistan, South Korea, and Japan. The benefits of teaching in China were what won Sovi over in the end. Sending her and Jared off to Shenzhen, a city right outside of Hong Kong.

Sovi graduated in spring of 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and a minor in Psychology. While in Shenzhen, Sovi will be teaching English as a foreign language. She has the option to teach kindergarteners or at a middle school but hasn’t completely made up her mind yet. “I’d rather have the middle school just because it’s more fun and they’re able to do a lot more in terms of the language. I’m pretty excited for either of them at this point,” Sovi said.

In kindergarten she would be teaching basic vocabulary. Whereas in middle school, the expected outcome is creative writing, business writing, and technical writing. Given those discussion laden lessons, some topics are off limits. “Some places in China (I don’t know if I’ll be teaching at such a school) they have government officials sitting in the classroom making sure you aren’t preaching western ideology,” Sovi said. Other times higher level students who are more skilled in English might sit in on a class to take notes.

While Sovi is teaching, Jared plans to finish his bachelor’s degree by taking online classes. He will hopefully graduate at the conclusion of the fall semester. He would also like to teach English classes, but while he finishes his degree, he will be looking for a part-time job. Right now, he’s thinking of finding what they call a “white monkey” or “rent a foreigner” job. These are jobs where Chinese companies hire Caucasian Westerners to represent them in public relations.

As excited as they are to move, they do have some reservations. Most of those reservations are about the actual moving process. They have to downsize their belongings to just the six suitcases they are permitted to take to China. Another reservation they have is about the safety of the food. Jared pointed out that China doesn’t have the same restrictions on food products as they do in the United States. Though Jared and Sovi have done some research to know how to stay away from such products.

When Sovi was officially hired in early July they began looking into what they were getting themselves into. They have now watched over a hundred videos just on China. They’ve learned about the Wet Markets (basically a very large Farmer’s Market) and to not drink the tap water. They have also learned that technology in China costs less than half of what it does in America.

The company Sovi is teaching through, SeaDragon International Education (SDE), offers many perks too. Along with Sovi being paid to teach, they are also set up with an apartment upon arrival and a majority of their expenses are paid for.  The expenses they are responsible for are internet, groceries, and clean water. SeaDragon is based out of Shenzhen and only places their employees within the city, making company events the perfect place to get to know the other teachers. There is even another teacher from North Dakota who has been placed in Shenzhen, but they won’t know who she is until they get there. SeaDragon also offers excursions across the country every two weeks which Sovi said is one of the things she is most excited for.

Overall, the Herrings have been ready to go since they got the news that Sovi was approved to teach. The only thing holding them back was the exorbitant amounts of paperwork they had to complete before they could leave. “I thought the whole point of a social security number was that all that stuff that we’re collecting right now was all in one place,” Jared said with a laugh.

They hope to arrive in China around the beginning of September. At which point they will be put up in a hotel until, with the help of their translator, they find an apartment. They have up to two weeks to choose a place and will only be shown western style apartments, which means it will have accommodations they are used to.

The Herrings are unsure if they’ll stay in China for a few years or continue on with their adventure after Sovi’s contract is up in July 2020. Sovi’s goal is to eventually visit over 50 countries. “I’ve always loved travelling. I always knew I wouldn’t stay in one place for too long, but this is the longest I’ve ever been anywhere, here in Dickinson. Which is something that DSU is partially responsible for,” Sovi said. On top of that, she said DSU and the organizations she has participated in while at college have also helped her through this process of moving by providing assistance with paperwork and references for the company.

The Blue Hawk family wishes nothing but the best for Jared and Sovi Herring as they take off on their next big adventure. We can’t wait to see where else life takes them.

Chapter 19: For the love of a daughter*

Harry tried to call Carol as soon as he got to Toronto’s airport. His call went straight to voicemail.He boarded the plane and tried to work a bit, but ended up not really doing much. He tried to sleep and couldn’t get comfortable enough to do so. He tried to watch a movie and wasn’t really paying attention to it. He spent hours trying to think about what to say to her. He had offended her. He had insulted her. He had thrown almost eight months of their friendship through the window. “I’m sorry” only wouldn’t save him from her wrath. But he had to have her forgiveness.

As soon as he landed in London, he called her again. Her line was busy.

He spent days trying to call her. Morning, afternoon and night. Harry would always be trying to reach her. Sometimes it went straight to voicemail, sometimes it rang non stop and sometimes her line was busy. He grew more and more anxious by the minute, with the sound of his line trying to connect with hers.

After the first week he even thought she had changed her number, and then asked Edward to call her. She answered him on the second ring and said she couldn’t talk to him now because she was about to start a meeting and that she’d call him later. She didn’t.

She was pretty much avoiding him. And it hurt. It fucking hurt.

Harry had never been ignored in his position. He was always the priority. And now his friend was giving him the colder shoulder. She was showing him that she truly didn’t think he was superior to her because of his title. She was showing him that her feelings were also a priority and that her world didn’t revolve around his. He was drinking more and getting more and more stressed everyday. He didn’t know how to deal with this situation. Edward stopped him when he booked a flight to appear at her house. It wasn’t the way to go. It’d only make things worse for them. But not having her to talk to him, not being able to say he was sorry was driving him crazy.

He actually cried alone in his bedroom when he couldn’t access her social media profiles. He was watching her from distance ever since and saw that she was living her life like always. But now she had blocked him and he wouldn’t be able to know if she was alright or if she was earning prizes at school due to her essays. He wasn’t a part of her daily life anymore.

Harry tried to send her flowers, even though he didn’t know which one was her favorite, so he bought a different bouquet for everyday. And every time a flower bouquet arrived at her house or her office, she’d just throw it on the trash bin without even reading the card.

After two weeks, Harry tried to call at her work number. She answered the phone and only then he realized how much he had missed her voice. Her sweet voice. But as soon as she heard him talk, she simply said “Stop fucking calling me, Harry” and hung up on him. Harry was loosing his faith that he’d ever win her trust back of if he ever would have her forgiveness.

Maria’s was turning 61 by the end of March. She was happy with her love life, she was thinking about retiring but she was incredible heartbroken to see her daughter falling out with Harry and getting back with Rodrigo. Harry was such a great influence in her daughter’s life, a totally opposite of her current boyfriend.

Every since it happened, Carol was a different person. She wouldn’t hear her mom’s advice, she wouldn’t let her mom know where she was, she’d cry alone at night but she wouldn’t talk with her mom about it which was a first for Maria. It looked like she was going through the terrible teenage years again. Maria understood what Harry had done and how it affected Carol. She even got angry at him for a couple of days, but she knew why he’d jump into that conclusion. She understood why her daughter needed comfort and to be in known territory to be able to cope with it. Harry had broken her daughter’s heart and she knew it was a difficult thing for Carolina to get over with. But she didn’t understood why Carol had detached so much from her.

On the other hand she and Hailey were creating a very nice bonding. She’d always call and chat, Maria would always ask how was things at school, if she had eaten and about the crushes she might have. She always remembered her to eat healthy things and to bring an umbrella every time she was out. She sent to London things that were only sold in Brazil just because she knew Hailey liked it. Maria was being a mother figure that Hailey wasn’t used to have. Agnes was a wonderful person (she already had met Maria through a Skype call). She was polite and warm, she smiled and was patient with Hailey translating the conversation. But her career was her priority and she put it above anything and anyone. Hailey had been raised mostly by Flavio and the nannies and Agnes tried to compensate things by spoiling her and giving her anything she asked for but her undivied attention. Even when her mom was home, her work phone was always on. And if someone went into labour in the middle of a birthday party or a vacation trip, Agnes wouldn’t hesitate to get ready and go to the hospital. She loved her patients and her job. It was a joy for her to help women everyday to meet their babies. Hailey was getting to a rebelious phase because of that, now that her father spent most of his time in another country. But Agnes was thankful her ex-husband had found someone as loving as Maria because she was the one helping her daughter when she needed. She was a great role model to help her daughter and she had given Hailey’s most wanted wish: a sister. That’s why she wasn’t jealous of this bonding time between them. In years to come, Maria would literally teach Agnes how to be close to her daughter. She’d teach Agnes to be the mom she didn’t have and the mom Hailey needed her to be.

Flavio convinced Maria to have a birthday party. They scheduled it to the last day of the month and they cooked half of the food for the party themselves. Hailey couldn’t attend due to school and Carol was bringing her boyfriend even though Maria had said she didn’t want him there. They decorated the house, put up a good playlist and chilled lots of beers like a typical Brazilian party. Julia had learned to keep her mouth shut about Rodrigo being there, so she just chatted with Maria and some of Carol’s cousins.

She and Carol were drunkly dancing on the back patio when the doorbell rang. Carol looked around to see if someone was missing but her mom asked her to go see who it was. She got the keys and went to the gates singing the song that was playing. She opened it and her eyes went wide. It was her father. Holding a bottle and with that characteristc smell of alcohol on him.

“What are you doing here?” she whispered and went outside to try to make him leave.

“I’m going to the party.” he drunkely said and she saw that he couldn’t stand still anymore. “Is this how you treat your father?”

She gently pushed him out of the view and looked around to see if Rodrigo’s car was close enough for her to drive him out of there. The last thing she wanted was her father making a scene on her mom’s birthday party.

“Hey dad...” she said trying to not make him angry. “What about I take you home? The party is already over and mom’s sleeping.”

“It’s not. You’re lying” he said pushing her and trying to enter.

“I’m not lying dad. It’s over. I was about to turn off the radio. But you know Julia, she can’t stop dancing once she’s drunk.”

“You should really stop saying people are drunk. She is probably like me, has just one glass.” he said and took a large sip straight from the bottle.

No, her friend wasn’t like him. She wasn’t an alcoholic. She didn’t get home talking shit to her parents. She didn’t lose money on gambling. Her friend would never be like him.

“Carol… what’s taking you so long?” her mom appeared. “Who is it?”

“It’s me.” Marcel showed up and Maria’s face went blank. Her hands started shaking and Carol could see the tears forming in ther eyes.

“What are you doing here?” she said in clenched teeth.

“I came to the party of my wife. Now you both get the fuck out of the way.” he said trying to enter and Maria stood in front of the gate.

“You’re not welcome in this house, Marcel. Get your drunk ass out of here now.” Maria defied him and even in his drunk state he was surprised. She rarely did that.

“I’m going to the fucking party and you’re not stopping me, you whore.”

“Dad, please...” Carol gently touched his arm when people at the party noticed the scandal her father was making and some neighbors were leaving their houses to watch the scene.

“THIS IS MY HOUSE AND I’M FUCKING ENTERING IT. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE YOU PIECE OF SHIT?” he was yelling right in her mom’s face and Carol was loosing her temper with it. No one yelled at her mom. Not anymore. She saw when Flavio made way between the guests and arrived at Maria’s side to try to make Marcel leave.

“Who is he?” he broke his bottle on the gate and was holding it in front of his body directed at Flavio.

“No one. Just a friend of Carol’s.” Maria said gently asking her boyfriend to let her handle the situation. When Marcel saw Maria touching Flavio he directed the shattered and pointy part of the bottle at her.

“YOU’RE CHEATING ON ME? YOU SLUT!” he was so drunk he didn’t even remember they were divorced almost a year and a half now.

Carol was still trying to make her father leave and she saw when his body contracted. He was going to hurt her mom. So she got in the middle of them and defied him. Marcel wanted to reach Maria and Carol wasn’t really listening to her mom’s pleas for her to get out of the way, to her aunt and grandmother crying. She wasn’t listening Rodrigo and Julia asking her to let go. She was in front of a man way taller and stronger than her and that man was trying to hurt her mom.

“YOU ARE ALSO A LITTLE PIECE OF SHIT. DAMNED BE THE DAY I DECIDED TO HAVE A CHILD. YOU’RE BECOMING A FUCKING WHORE JUST LIKE YOUR MOTHER.” he yelled right in Carol’s face and she could smell the alcohol and even got a few drops from the spit he threw at her.

It all happened so fast and no one really saw it. Marcel turned his back to Carol and everyone thought he was leaving. He just threw the rest of the bottle on the street and darted to where they all were standing.

“I’M GOING TO KILL YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS MARIA.”

Carol was still in front of her mom when he said that. He ran up to them and pushed his dauther of the way. Carol fell hard on the floor and hit her hip and rib on the ground. She cried out in pain and he took his attention from his ex-wife to his daughter. He looked at her and Carol could see all the disgust and hate in her father’s eyes. And that hurt more than the kick he gave her before Flavio and Rodrigo grabbed him. That’s when they heard a police car arriving. Julia had ran back to the house to call them. He was escorted to the nearest station and Maria would press charges as soon as she made sure her daughter was alright.

Carol was in so much pain she couldn’t even breathe right. Julia was by her side in a blink, she kneeled on the ground and supported her friend’s head. She was putting on a strong face but she only wanted to cry and hug her friend and say it’d be alright. Maria was crying beside her daughter and started screaming desperately when Carol closed her eyes. But she did that just because the street lights were blinding her and because she needed to not focus on the piercing pain she was feeling. Physically and emotionally.

She only stayed overnight at the hospital. She thankfully hadn’t broken bones or serious injuries.  She had just a sprained arm, a bruised rib and bruises on her left side. Her hips, waist and thighs. She had a giant purple bruise where he had kicked her and she was trying to be positive about it all. Her mom was by her side the whole time and Carol wished she wasn’t. She wanted to cry, but not in front of her mom. She wanted to be alone. She was feeling rejected and lonely. She was ashamed and embarrassed. She needed comfort but she wouldn’t ask her mom for it, because like Maria had said before, it all was hurting way more to her than to her daughter.

She got to go home at the end of the next afternoon. She was walking slowly and with help and she was still in pain. Flavio, Maria and Julia helped her all the way. The girls had given Carol a bath and he had cooked her favorite dish. They fussed over her non stop. They gave her lots of pillows to make her comfortable and no one dared to talk about what had happened or to let her alone.

Carol actually had to pretend she was asleep for them to leave her bedroom, because she couldn’t find it in her heart to send them away. When she was sure she was alone, she grabbed her phone and called the only person she wanted by her side now. It’d be around 11pm in London, but she was sure he was awake.

Harry answered after the first ring.

“CAROL. OH THANK GOD IT’S YOU.” Harry said.

“Yeah, it’s me...” she said with a weak voice filled with painkillers. Harry’s heart filled with joy for hearing her voice after all this time. But at the same time it was broken for listening to it being so weak and without it’s constant sweetness. He fidgeted on the line he was standing on.

“How are you?” he asked concerned.

“I’ve had better days.” she simply answered.

“You and me both...” he said.

“My father…” Carol started and her voice cracked. That was the first time she was allowing herself think about it. And she was going to talk about. All the tears she was keeping to herself since yesterday were coming now. She could feel she was on the edge of breaking down. She didn’t want to repeat the history. She didn’t want to say out loud how humiliated she had been. But she needed to tell him.

“I know.” he said.

“You know?” she was relieved and surprised. “How?”

“Julia. I called you last night and she answered. She told me what happened and she was so fucking mad about it. You were at the hospital.”

“Oh my God. She didn’t tell me that.” Carol smiled through her tears. “I don’t know if I love or hate her for it.”

“Carol… I’m sorry.” Harry said and thanked the official that was helping him. He looked around to see if Bill had kept up with him. “I want to apologize about everything. I was a fucking prick to you. I was unfair and told things I’ll regret forever. I wasn’t thinking straight, I was taken by surprise and I am sorry. So terribly sorry. I just want things to get back to normal between us. I wanna call you and talk about non important things. I want us. I want us to be friends again. Can you forgive me?”

Carol listened to Harry and heard him pouring his heart out to her. She had sworn to herself she wouldn’t ever forgive him, but due to recent events, she only wanted the safety and comfort he provided.

“I don’t really know what to say about your father. I just wish I was there to protect you and kick his sorry ass. I hope he rots in jail.” he said and he only listened to her crying on the other side and he couldn’t wait to get near her.

“I… I forgive you, Harry. But you have to forgive me too.” She said crying and sttutering.

“You don’t have anything to be asking forgiveness for.” he said and for the first time in weeks he could breath freely.

“I love you, Henry.” his heart melted when he heard his given name. “You’re my best friend.”

“Your best male friend.” he corrected her “Julia would kill us both if she heard what you just said.”

She laughed and then groaned in pain.

“It hurts to laugh.” she said.

“Promise I’m not making you laugh anymore. Don’t worry. The pain will stop at some time.”

“But the damage won’t.” she said.

“I think it’s true. But come on, get some rest. You have to sleep to help your body heal.” he noticed her voice was getting filled with sleep. The painkillers were probably kicking in. She hung up and tried to be comfortable in her bed before finally being able to rest.

Is Justin Bieber’s Mom Shading Him Over His Engagement? Betches

Young love. It’s so beautiful, so powerful, so all-consuming, and so damn stupid. And you know who is the stupidest of all the stupids out there? Justin Bieber. That’s right, I said it. As everyone in the world now knows, Justin Bieber got engaged to the daughter of the scariest-looking Baldwin brother last month, in some sort of strange plot to prove to Selena Gomez he doesn’t still sniff a lock of her hair before bed every night. I assume.

Since the engagement, family members of both Justin and Hailey have expressed excitement and joy for this blessed train wreck of an event. But guess who doesn’t seem too excited about this mild natural disaster? Justin’s mom, Pattie Mallette. And you know why? Because his mama don’t like you, Hailey, and she likes everyone. That, or Pattie has at least one iota of common sense in her brain and can see that this is going to end about as well as the Red Wedding.

I’m sure you’re asking yourself how I, someone laying in their bed in the tri-state area, could possibly know that Pattie is just not that into this rushed engagement, and the answer to that is simple: Twitter.  According to this article in Cosmopolitan, there are a few pieces of evidence. But, as much as I want to believe this conspiracy theory, the evidence is about as strong as my will to live on a Monday morning.  Let’s take a look at these straws for which fans are desperately grasping.

First, we have Pattie’s Twitter bio. According to all the Beliebers out there getting their panties in a twist about this, Pattie’s bio used to say, “yes Justin Bieber is my son.” That was recently removed and now her bio only reads #LoveWins #LOVEARMY. Okay, so yes, it is a little suspicious that she removed that line from her bio, but maybe she figured after 9 years on Twitter, we already knew she was his mom? And considering Justin Bieber’s abs are aggressively staring at me from a pinned tweet at the top of her feed, could she really be THAT mad at him? I wouldn’t even feel comfortable staring at my son’s naked torso when I’m proud of his decisions, let alone when he is making a mockery of the sanctity of marriage.

Pattie also recently tweeted “Love is unconditional.” And I know Twitter is not, like, a binding contract, but it would be a little petty if she was mad at Justin for getting engaged to a model that his erect penis is telling him he loves. Certainly not unconditional.

The next piece of evidence that every Cosmo girl should know is that Pattie liked the following tweet from The Bachelor’s OG virgin Sean Lowe:

Look guys, I read into everything. I have spent hours poring over Taylor Swift lyrics to see if there’s anything to the rumors that she and Karlie Kloss were in love. And even I think this might be a stretch. The title of the Cosmo article says this is a tweet “shading rushed engagements.” BUT IS IT? This is clearly a tweet shading the garbage crop of Bachelorette contestants this season. And even though Pattie liked it, is it that far off to assume that she is also just bitter that Wills got cut unjustly?

So, as I mentioned, weak evidence at best. I do actually hope Pattie is pissed at Justin for this incredibly rash decision, but I doubt she’s leaving us all breadcrumbs on social media. We should keep our eyes on this, though, because you never know when flimsy evidence can become a possibly literal smoking gun. And if there’s anything more fun than the rushed engagement of two twentysomething millionaires, it’s a blood feud.

1. Selena Gomez is done with Justin Bieber. The 27-year-old pop star released “Lose You to Love Me” early Wednesday — along with a black-and-white music video shot entirely on an iPhone — and the song appears to be a Dear John letter to her ex-boyfriend, who has since married Hailey Baldwin.

“You promised the world and I fell for it / I put you first and you adored it / Set fires to my forest / And you let it burn / Sang off-key in my chorus / ‘Cause it wasn’t yours,” Gomez sings, seemingly referring to their 2013 demo “Can’t Steal Our Love.”

The pop star’s latest single explores how she had to let 25-year-old Bieber go in order to find self-confidence and self-love, as she sings in the chorus, “We’d always go into it blindly / I needed to lose you to find me / This dancing was killing me softly / I needed to hate you to love me, yeah.”

The “Wolves” singer also appears to reference how quickly Bieber moved on with Baldwin after he and Gomez ended their relationship in March 2018. (Bieber was engaged to Baldwin by July 2018.)

“In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / In the thick of healing, yeah,” she sings.

Bieber hasn’t publicly addressed the song, though Baldwin took a screenshot of Summer Walker’s song “I’ll Kill You” and posted it to her Instagram story shortly after Gomez released the track.

Baldwin later denied the song had anything to do with Gomez, commenting, “Please stop with this nonsense. There is no ‘response.’ This is complete BS.”

2. Cardi B has joined the cast of Universal’s “Fast & Furious 9” in an undisclosed role. It’s the rapper’s first movie part since her role as the stripper Diamond in STX’s drama “Hustlers.”

Vin Diesel disclosed the casting Tuesday in a post on his Instagram account with a video that showed him and Cardi B on the UK set of the movie. “I’m tired, but I can’t wait,” she told Diesel’s followers. “I ain’t gonna front, I think this is going to be the best one.”

The news came a day after the announcement that Ozuna, one of Latin music’s fastest-rising stars, had joined the cast and was also in talks to join the film’s soundtrack. Justin Lin, who directed “Fast & Furious 6,” returns to direct the ninth installment with franchise mainstay Diesel starring as Dominic Toretto. 5. A former child TV star accused of launching a campaign to destroy a venture fund owned by billionaire Peter Thiel deleted nearly 2,000 texts from her company phone, court documents claim.

Crystal McKellar, who played Becky Slater on The Wonder Years in the 1980s and early 90s, become a Harvard-trained lawyer after her TV days were over.Graduating from Harvard Law School in 2003, she went on to become in house counsel for a Texas venture capital firm. McKellar, whose sister Danica played Winnie Cooper in the hit show, allegedly tried to undermine Thiel's Mithril Capital Management by writing a number of inflammatory, anonymous handwritten letters to its investors.

She is being sued as part of a breach of contract lawsuit in Delaware, claiming more than $1 million in damages.

It has now emerged the 43-year-old also deleted a total of 1,941 text messages in the eight months before she handed in her work phone, according to court papers.

Between February when McKellar left the firm and the phone being returned to the firm in September, a tranche of messages were erased and contained only 32 undeleted texts, court papers claim.

The suit states: 'Shockingly, Ms McKellar deleted nearly all of the text messages sent to or from her Mithril Capital Management cellular telephone, despite knowing that Mithril Capital Management was investigating her material breach of her agreements', the New York Post reports.  

The venture fund's follow-up suit in Delaware court accuses McKellar of the 'unauthorized removal, destruction, and attempted destruction of Mithril records and property'.

McKellar's letters accused Mithril co-founder Ajay Royan of 'lying to investors and the public about how much he is charging us in management fees'.

She previously told Fox News the allegations of wrongdoing were 'unequivocally false'.

McKellar added: 'I left Mithril earlier this year when it became clear to me that Mithril's leadership was lying to its investors and that the promises it had made were not going to be kept.'

The former actress worked as the only general counsel of Mithril until February of this year and left the firm with a $225,000-a-year consulting job, according to a suit filed this week in Texas state court.

After leaving, she is accused of immediately beginning 'a concerted whisper campaign to undermine Mithril, in which she would make false, anonymous complaints to Mithril's limited partners'.

The suit alleges McKellar attempted to 'solicit Mithril's limited partners almost immediately' claiming that her former firm was being investigated by US regulators.

McKellar is also alleged to have mailed letters 'written to sow discord between Mithril and its business partners'.

Mithril stated how the firm was charging appropriate fees which McKellar herself had signed off on, according to the suit.
