"Has Margaret asked Davy Jones if he's a pirate or not? What did he say?"
Tumblr media
"Would you believe I had actually asked that very question to Captain Jones on the day we first met?"
Margaret grins recollecting that day, a day that brings her such joys and laughs, like the break of sun after a long dark storm.
Story time!
"And would you believe that I had asked him this while he was dangling upside down from a palm tree!" she snickers, very vividly recalling the sight "After aiding him out of the shipyard... you know, when I had found him in one of the barrels and had to distract the sailors in order for him to discreetly escape before the barrel lid was hammered shut and he was transported into the hold of a ship... the very angry Mr. Osbert - goodness what a sight! - when he caught sight of Davy again and the chase was afoot once more.
At that time I was not yet dragged into the whole mess, so simply spectated with piqued curiosity... and then continued on my merry way in the other direction. Coincidentally, that direction led to Davy and my paths crossing again as I came to a luscious greenery of palm trees for a moment of respite. It was quite peaceful... while it lasted.
It was then I heard someone whispering some noises - which nearly startled me - and searching around, there was no one in sight! ...until I heard my name called and looked up... and up there, hiding in the palm tree leaves was none other than Captain Jones himself!
How he had managed to get up there by himself with what appeared to be only some rope was utterly beyond me.
And if that sight wasn't enough of a surprise, imagine then seeing Captain Jones tumbling out of that palm tree like an acrobat, only to be caught by the leg by said rope tangled in the palm leaves and helplessly dangle there upside down!
... He was helpless in my presence.
And, until it was decided that I would be handed his claymore sword and cut the rope, we just stood there... ah, I did the standing, he did the dangling... and we talked.
It was an opportune moment to inquire some important questions. He did not appear to me as a pirate, only a very eccentric sailor who surely hadn't been to shore for at least a decade - I'd know, coming from a family of sailors, so it wasn't entirely out of the ordinary to me.
That said, seeing whatever had occurred between Davy and Mr. Osbert and the group of soldiers, I wanted to ensure I wasn't going to get myself tangled into anything... little did I know.
So it was in that conversation I quite plainly asked him, 'Are you a pirate?' and he answered me plainly that he was not a pirate.
And there you have it.
He continued on how he was formerly a merchant sailor, and now a traveler of sorts across the seven seas, et cetera, which validated the stories of his travels he was telling me earlier, so evidently he wasn't lying.
Of course, there was more to those words as I would inevitably discover that day...
This wasn't any Captain Jones, but Davy Jones himself."
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Indeed there was more to Jones than that. Who he is and his past is as far as the seas he rules itself. She may be in a little denial. She may be optimistically hopeful for his redemption arc. She may have to face her inescapable destiny of piracy entwining her life after all. Who knows?
"Perhaps I shall inquire him of it again. For you, grey-faced seagull."
