you take a short break from hunching over the desk in your room to examine your handiwork on repairing your [ Mother’s Earrings ].             for the past few days now, your retainers have been bringing you little shards and pieces that they’ve found from when they were last destroyed by Lady Gyokumen. despite the fact that the jewelry itself was destroyed before the stone pillar and talismans that Your Mother is sealed within, the bits and pieces seem to have migrated and have been found around various parts of the castle for some inconceivable reason.
after the events of A Previous Time, you’d reasoned to simply ignore the absence of the jewelry itself, and reason with yourself that a physical reminder of Your Mother wasn’t necessary in order to ensure that you remained focused on the true goal of your task in assisting in Gymaoh’s Revival.              at least… that’s how you’d felt at the start…              you’d forgotten that you found a trivial comfort in their weight on your head. you’d gotten accustomed to waking up after each sleep cycle, and lifting sluggish fingers to grasp them loosely, ensuring they hadn’t popped off while you tossed and turned about. it was a relaxing habit to remove them and polish them, while speaking candidly with the members of your company about some such thing. it was necessary to keep them cleansed and warded, refreshed, to ensure their usefulness as a protective artifact.
you’d forgotten these little details.                         you’d forgotten you’d been doing this since you were a child.
taking that moment of pause, you allow a thin secretive smile to grace your lips. you’re almost done fixing them! with the dents and splintering of the metal as it is now, they’ll never be quite as vibrantly hued as they were before. they’ll be far more fragile, and it’s entirely possible that they won’t be very effective as wards or magic infused artifacts ever again.             still, seeing them almost complete and whole once more fills you with a soothing sense of peace and calm, as the most recent piece you placed left you with another [ Pleasant Memory ] to dwell on for some time.
as futile as it had seemed in the beginning, allowing your retainers to collect the pieces at their leisure has been far more fulfilling than you expected it to be. you’re so close to fixing them, maybe it wasn’t as futile as you thought after all.
