Do you have any headcanons about Akita’s parents, how Akira was back in his hometown and his feelings towards them after his arrest and being sent to Tokyo

this got…uh…long bc i actually do have an EXTENSIVE idea on his parents and his relationship with them, so under a cut!

i think i sort of have a different idea about akira’s parents than a lot of people seem to - i don’t see them as great parents, but i also don’t see them as abusive or neglectful. this comes from the fact that i stubbornly cling to the hc that akira led an exceptionally average and unremarkable life before the events of p5 - he had extraordinary potential, but he never experienced much hardship or was put in any sort of situation where he would need to draw on that. so his parents were average people for the most part, although i do feel that his mom very much wanted him to be a model student while his dad wanted him to choose the same career track as himself. he had a stay at home mom that pushed him to study hard and be a soft-spoken, polite child, so akira was given to plenty of study and quiet hobbies. his dad works as a carpenter (oK I KNOW but i live in a small town and draw on my own experiences, which is why i gave him this job. additionally, i’ve read a little about the shrinking countryside populations in japan, and a lot of that is due to job availability, so most of the jobs you see are service careers like this or part time work sjdfbdhv i just feel like this goes against what so many ppl hc his parents do for a living, so i just wanted to point out my own reasons why i have this idea SO ANYWAY) and he wants akira to learn from him to do the same. and essentially akira went along with their wishes, although he didn’t really take learning from his dad seriously (interestingly, proficiency takes the least amount of points to max out afaik) as he figured once he left for college, he could truly begin his own life. so akira never intended on following his parents’ wishes for him, but he didn’t actively fight them about it because he had an escape plan. as for their relationship, i don’t think of them as an openly affectionate family and all of them are very quiet, private people, but i think they do all care for each other and despite never showing it too much, it was all fine as they never really went through anything serious that requires a closely supportive family.

that is, of course, until akira’s arrest and they totally drop the ball on this one. i think initially his parents cannot BELIEVE that he did anything, not with how akira conducts himself and with how quiet they are as a family. honestly, they’re bewildered by the proceedings entirely and they genuinely do NOT know what to do for their son - they’ve never dealt with scandal or much difficulty, and i think they just allowed themselves to be led on to the easiest solution without doing a whole lot of fighting for him. they just want it to go away, essentially. so their choice is a complicated one, but also not awful - a lot people joke about how they sent akira to someone who might as well be a stranger HOWEVER…sojiro is a probation officer. this is kind skipped over in the en localization, as you only get that info if you watch the tv quiz show on 6/2, where morgana mentions that it’s amazing how sojiro works as a po for no pay. so he can be trusted, and at the very least his parents have a small connection to him through a friend of a friend (i hc they live REALLY far from tokyo, so it’s a small miracle they have that much). however, i also feel it VERY much affected akira how little they actually fought for him. they just told him to listen to the lawyer, to put his head down, to be good and polite and follow whatever instruction he’s given…and he watched as they did the same. his parents KNOW he’s not a criminal, he knows they know!!! and yet they did nothing. it broke his trust in them, to be told he would be sent to tokyo on probation and how they said it was the best thing for him, he could continue his education and at the end of the year, life would be back to normal. i think it caused the first real fights in their home, akira very much upset by how little they did for him while his parents told him over and over that this was best for him. there was a breakdown in the relationship then, because it made akira feel he was alone and feel that not even his own parents truly believed in his innocence. this completely hits home when he’s sent off on his own to go to tokyo (again, my akira is from aomori so that’s a LONG trip), and he harbors a lot of soured feelings toward them at the start of his year (and hurt ones too, but he tries to bury them). additionally, i think this really furthers his distrustful attitude of others in the game - if his own parents can betray him, then there’s no reason to trust in anyone else. 

i don’t believe contact was fully cut during the events of p5 (i just…don’t agree with “they never even called him during the game!!!” bc…getting calls from off-screen parents that have nothing to do with the plot would be exceedingly out of place and meaningless to the player. you can have that hc as technically no, they don’t, but it’s super take it or leave it to me just as any game mechanic/plot device thing in the game is, and i leave it tbh), but both sides are distant during the calls, especially as akira becomes increasingly busier in tokyo. akira thinks of the pts as his family now, people that get angry for him and actually want to fight for him, the same way he would for them, so he also hates the idea of going home at the end of the game. BUT i sort of covered that in a previous ask and this is SO LONG i need to shut up lol i just feel my ideas are extremely contradictory to what i’ve seen floating around about his parents, so i wanted to explain myself well. i also want to say i understand why people hc them as neglectful or even abusive given akira’s situation, so i don’t want to invalidate those feelings or hcs - this is just my own personal take on his situation due to how i think of his life. everything was safe and ordinary…until one day, it wasn’t.
