the 19th century: our publishing houses have so much work to do! A whole 4,500 books were submitted for publishing this year :( the invention of mass production makes things so hard.
modern publishing houses: hooh, slow day today. we've only got 6000 books to decide on the yay or nay to go to publish. better still keep an eye on the 2700 self-published novels though
Every 21st century piece of writing advice: Make us CARE about the character from page 1! Make us empathize with them! Make them interesting and different but still relatable and likable!
Every piece of classic literature: Hi. It's me. The bland everyman whose only purpose is to tell you this story. I have no actual personality. Here's the story of the time I encountered the worst people I ever met in my life. But first, ten pages of description about the place in which I met them.
#not to mention all the 'modern writing advice' is taken from like. youtubers on tier with fucking lily orchard#none of it exists in actual creative writing classes. literally none of it.#the classic literature first bit is also literally the beginning of danganronpa right down to 10 'pages' of where makoto met the bastards#which was published in 2010#joker was about a guy progressively becoming Worse#a film from 2019#the thing was watching awful bastards fuck things up but still act as logically as they could under the circumstances#a film released in the late 20th century#and i recently spoke to an author who is a well known aussie crime author who graduated from my uni#and her novels are Look At These Bastards#almost like if you extend your knowledge of writing criticism beyond#'unmarried/divorced youtuber in their 30s whose entire frame of writing reference is children's media from their era or this one'#you quickly get writing advice that is actually useful and you get some disinfectant for the brain rot#shit like shit published in the 19th century is still going!#but additionally you have to take into account that there is far more accessibility to way more media!#we're literally drowning in Content and have to spend our time wisely now#ultimately: don't write to a fucking formula. just figure out why you're using certain writing conventions and what purpose they serve.
